[Q] Yet another bricked phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I tried to upgrade to 2.3 tonight via Kies, and something went wrong.
First, I did a factory reset on the phone before trying to upgrade. Then, during the upgrade, the screen on the phone turned shiny blue a couple of minutes into the process. I left it like that for 30 minutes, but nothing happened.
I then disconnected it, expecting trouble either way.
I can access download mode, but not recovery mode. I started download mode, and tried the kies "emergency recovery". That seemd to work for two minutes, before my screen again turned blue.
So I decided to try something else. Just to see if I could revive my phone, I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
Same problem - My screen turns blue and nothing happens.
I'm kind of hoping some of you guys/girls have a bright idea or two
I could use some help.
Thanks - Ivar

solution is simple : 1. go in download mode (and afterwards plug in the usb)
2. download odin 1.3
3. download XXJPU from samfirmware + 512.pit
4.Start odin 1.3
5.check the repartion box
6.select the PIT file
7.select pda (pda low) file
8.select phone (modem file)
9.select csc (csc file)
click start and pray

Stuck in the infamous connect phone to PC screen - Please help

HI,
I'm a complete newbie with the Android (power user in WM).
Using SGS i9000 with origin German ROM I9000XXJF3.
I was trying my first ROM reflash, but something seems to be very wrong.
This is what I did:
1. I rooted the device successfully using that guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728754
2. Downloaded and install from the market busybox
3. Then I followed the guide here: http://samsung-firmware.webs.com/Flash guide english.pdf .
Important, I was trying to install the ROM: I9000JPJG8 BUT with PIT 513
4. ODIN announced (on blue background ): reset, and the device returned into recovery mode (same I used for rooting the device).
5. I was trying to repeat the process, this time with PIT 512 with the same ROM.
6. It seems to successful. I saw the glowing Galaxy S, for sometime, then the device turned itself off.
Now all I get is the connect to PC (phone, orange exclamation mark & PC logos) logo.
I was trying to pull the battery out, restarted the PC, and was trying to reconnect to ODIN, but ODIN does not recognize the device.
I was trying to select in ODIN only "auto reboot", press start, but again nothing happened.
Very frustrating for a start.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Amir.
Shalom amir,
go back to download mode and reflash with odin (512 pit). Should do the trick.
I've experienced the same thing before. I thought I bricked the phone but that wasn't the case.
Try to reflash your SGS on another computer. This PC that you used won't be able to find your SGS anymore until you successfully flashed it.

Hi Mike,
After numerous times, I've managed to return to downloading mode
I've achieved that by inserting the battery, while pressing vol down+power+home.
Now was able to reflash, and everything is good.

I did that too, but the problem was how to return to downloading mode..
Almost had a heart attack...
Thanks anyway guys!
I have been stuck on that screen more than I like but have found this to work the best.
1 - power down the device and remove battery / usb connection
2 - connect usb
3 - hold the volume up key while moving to step 4
4 - insert battery
I end up in the download screen everytime and then must start the Ordin3 flash quickly otherwise it just hangs on the download. I appears if I start the download within 15 seconds, works like a charm.

You are SUCH A LIFE SAVER!!! I tried every other thing on xda and youtube but the above steps are the only one that worked on my vibrant. The trick is to start ODIN ASAP after step 4 and start the flash (after selecting PIT and PDA file) or it won't work if you take your time
This happemed to me too nuty phone was going ibto download mode so I just reflashed it with 2.3.4

[Q] Phone wont start -Samsung Galaxy S I9000

Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S I 9000. I tried to flash the ROM, accidentlly switched off my phone. The phone would only go into Recovery mode so i erased everything on my Card and Reset my phone through Recovery. Since it still didnt start, i tried dowloading the I9000XXJP2.7z file and loading a fresh copy of phone software. Phone goes into downloading mode, however after loading all the files on Odin and pressing start, the message "Analysing files" comes up and nothing happens beyond that. It shows COM8. I'm absolutely new to this and dont know what to do. Can somebody please help.
So what is your current condition? can you go to Download Mode? I recommend use Odin.. I've bricked my SGS almost 10times while learning how to flash but managed to flash all desired Roms successfully (eventually )
I can go to the download mode however i dont know what am i not doing right as after selecting all the files (Pit, PDA, Phone, Modem, CSC) and being on com 8 and clicking on Start, all Odin does is say "Analysing files". Doesnt go beyond that and there is no activity (Blue bar) on the phone either. I'm not sure if the files i'm using are right or not or if im missing anything else here.

[Q] How to go back to standard firmware?

Hi,
was very interested in rooting my phone (Samsung Galaxy S) and putting a custom rom on it. I managed to put on Darky's latest rom last night. However it was giving me problems with the Android market (it crashed when it came to the installation part). Therefore, I want to get rid of all the modifications I made to my phone and go back to the settings how the phone was shipped to me.
How can I do that?
I already downloaded the original firmware (2.2.1) using this forum. It is a .tar file and I tried to flash it with Odin. Seemed to work at the beginning but there were still some elements, like apps, of the old Rom left. So I did the process again.
Now my phone starts up but after the boot screen I only have a black screen with the typical crash vibration patterns all the time. After flashing it again I get into the recovery mode showing errors.
Can somebody please tell me how to go back to my original firmware, without a custom rom, root access etc.?
I'm afraid that I will brick my phone now.
thank you
(I searched this forum but couldnt find anything related to my question)
Try a different firmware. Had the same issue when flashing a 2.1fw on an already 2.2 custom rom. Try a US 2.2 jpy. You can get any galaxy s firmware from (www samfirmware com).

thank you for the quick reply.
I am not 100% exactly sure if my procedure is right. Here is what I do:
1. Put your phone to download mode (hold down: volume down, home key, power)
2. Do not plug in your phone yet.
3. Start Odin3
4. Tick "Re-Partition", and also check that "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" have been ticked.
5. Click "PIT" button and select s1_odin_20100512.pit file.
6. Now, plug in the phone and wait until Odin finds it.
7. Click "Start" button... <Firmware update start...> <Get PIT for mapping...> appear. The phone will turn off and the screen indicates "Reset". Wait until Odin indicates "Pass".
8. Plug out your phone, remove the battery, put it back in and put phone to download mode again.
9. Click "Reset" button in Odin and untick "Re-Partition" box.
10. Do not select PIT file again. Just leave it empty.
11. I select here the downloaded firmware (2.2.1) in PDA. Everything else is blank (PHONE and CSC)
12. Phone installs and Odin shows pass
Now, the phone does not boot but goes into system recovery 3e showing an error message E: Cant mount /dev/block/st110
E: copy_dbdata_media:Cant mount DBDATA
After I select "reboot system now" the phone boots but gets stuck right after the Samsung logo disappears. then I only see a black screen and the vibration.
What am I doing wrong here?
thank you I really appreciate it!!
Follow instructions Block 2 method Odin and use the firmware you want .

PIT file
i selected the hyperlink you provided. I am following option 1. i have checked the 'PDA' box, browsed and set the directory for the (XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.tar) file. I am confused with step 6 as you have asked to select a 'pit' file, where can i get this file?
thankyou
just to add..
when i said i had done a hard reset, i used the button combination (volume down + power + home screen button) this did nothing, it did not give me access to another mode, it just stayed on the same logo screen
i followed your link and executed all stages
i followed your link and executed all stages. i found out what the PIT file was, browsed for and added it to the directory. It did not work successfully. i now have the explanation mark sign followed by a message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again" problem is kies has no details of my phone and cant connect to my phone.
please help
thankyou
Pit file is attached in "zip" file in the same thread, download firmware from here
http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-N7000&r=1#regiona (i think you are in EU somewhere if not change "region" to download your latest Firmware...)
Now follow this
- Run (open) Samsung N7000 Galaxy Note Downloader (Odin3 v 1.85) .
- Check these options: Re-Partition, Auto Reboot, and F. Reset Time.
- Now you have to select Pit file and Firmware files too like this (click & browse):
PIT: Q1_20110914_16GB.pit
PDA: CODE_N7000xxxxx_CL627135_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.m d5
PHONE: MODEM_N7000xxxxx_REV_05_CL1067428.tar.md5
CSC: GT-N7000-MULTI-CSC-Oxxxxx.tar.md5
- Put phone into Download Mode: power off the phone, at the same time press (Volume Down + Home + Power) buttons
- Connect USB cable to phone and make sure the program detect it (Comm 2-Yellow box).
- Click Start button and wait till the program finishes the process.
- After the phone restarted disconnect USB cable.
- If stuck in Boot animation (samsung logo) Take out the Battery, leave it for 5 minutes, and re-insert battery, Press (Volume Up+Menu+Power button) simultaneously to enter Recovery mode, once in recovery Mode, do a factory reset and repeat above process

i understand how to retreive the 'PIT' file, and the '.tar' file. However, where do i retreive the 'CSC' and 'Phone' files from.
please help
thankyou
i retreived the PIT file from odin:
u1_02_20110310_emmc_EXT4.pit
Does this file look correct for a PIT file?
If possible can you provide links to the other files i need and pit file, if the one ive displayed about is incorrect. ive noticed in the flash guide for my phone, n7000, it talks about a jig box, which i am not using and have no knowledge of.
thankyou for your kind help
Dear If you have one file other than Pit, then click PDA and browse to this .tar file, click start it will work, if you have 3 files see guide as there in my earlier posts
pit file is attached

N7000XXKKA_N7000CPWKK3_N7000XXKK5_HOME.tar.md5 (uk firmware)
Q1_20110914_16GB.pit
i am now back to the samsung logo screen. However this time you can hear the phone functioning in the background. i can press the volume up/volume down whilst the sound of the phone gets loud or quiet. i can hear messages comming through. i just cant see nothing but the samsung logo flashing.
you said at the end of your link, that if this should happen i should reset phone from recovery and restart the process, how do i do this? how do i enter recovery mode to reset the phone
thankyou for your help, please continue i think we are nearly there
i am grateful

I hope r u putting right files in Odin for pda, csc and modem
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
the only files im using in odin are:
1) PDA: N7000XXKKA_N7000CPWKK3_N7000XXKK5_HOME.tar.md5
2) PIT: Q1_20110914_16GB.pit
these are the only TWO files i have. You said if i have one file other than the PIT file, which would be the PDA file i have stated above then i can click start in odin once the files had been browsed for. what am i doing wrong?
in OPTION 1 of the following link u posted to me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1386356
it only mentions the PDA and PIT files. It does not mention CSC or PHONE or MODEM files. IF i do need any of them files where exactly can i get them from i been reading through earlier posts of yours yet still cant find them.
Thankyou
ive noticed this file from Dr.Ketan
"Yes itmay be single file after extraction, inthis case select just PDA
DONT SELECT RESET PARTITION"
if i have just a PDA file and a PIT file then im not suppose to select re-partition. in your post in option one of your link you said to select this.

[Q] Stuck in a boot loop - now just stuck

Hi has uploaded ICS 3333, and it worked for a few weeks then today when it in airplane mode I took it out my pocket and it was in a bootloop mode.
Samsung --> Semaphore
So decided that I would retry installing ICS starting with 2.3.6 using ODIN but it crapped out, and now it's only allowing me to go into download mode. It said failed, retried a few times but I did not record the exact error (aaah)
As it is allowing me to get to download mode thought that would be ok, but when I connect it to the PC, it is not recognised at all now. So ODIN does not seem to work..
Im sure you are going to say just install a specific driver or something, but I don't what it would be. The PC recognised the mobile earlier, but just not now.
Update: Now the Phone is fully dead, and does not appear to be charging at all. So maybe dead because the battery is flat.
I've updated ROm's a few time's and always had the recovery mode to recover things and even have the USB item which should allow to move into download.
Any idea's folks.
thanks in advance... Bill
I was following this initially
1st Install this - this flashes Andoid 2.3.6 first
I downloaded I900XXJVU_I9000OXAJVU_OXA.rar
Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC. Then Switch it Off. Wait 5-6 seconds for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
Now, put the Galaxy S in “Download Mode” — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power until a screen saying ‘Download Mode’ comes up.
Open Odin (from step 5) — Odin3 v1.7.exe.
Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box in the bottom left. If you don’t get “Added! !” message, than probably there is a problem with drivers. Make sure you’ve drivers installed (links given above under heading ‘Pre-Installation thoughts’).
Now, in Odin, select these files at respective tabs (for visual help, see the screenshot at step 11 below):
a) Click the PDA Tab, and select CODE_I9000XXJVU_CL851880_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5 (from step 3.1)
b) Click the Phone Tab, and select MODEM_I9000XXJVU_REV_00_CL1092175.tar.md5 (from step 3.3)
c) Click the CSC Tab, and select GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVU.tar.md5 (from step 3.2)
d) Click the PIT Tab, and select s1_odin_20100512.pit (from step 2)
Make sure the ‘Re-Partition’checkbox in ODIN is selected. Also, Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes should be selected too. Leave everything else on Odin untouched.
Double check everything said in step 10 and 11 above. Your Odin’s screen, after selecting all the files and ticking and not-ticking the checkboxes, should look like this:
Screen capture can be found at weblink
Now, hit the START button to begin the flashing process. When it finishes, your phone will automatically reboot, upon which you can unplug the cable. Plus, you’ll get a PASS (with green background) message in the left-most box at the very top of the Odin. ***I got a fail here***
read that kies is different from usb drives. Not 100% sure that would be the issue as could connect previously with ODIN, which I think means the drivers are ok.
Next question that I have, if the battery has gone flat, and it does not appear to be charging either with USB or wall mounted, where do I go from here...
Im not a total newbie, and have been on DarkyRom for most of the versions, just this boot loop has got me big style... Can anyone give me a few idea's of what to try...
You might try a direct battery charger for which you won't need your battery to be in phone and one charged you can try the usual things as flashing through odin.
Try to install another driver..since i use ics for my sgs..pc wont recognise my phone..i install s2 or nexus driver ( mtb driver ) and it works perfectly as before..
If you have flashed ICS then you will need to install the GNexus drivers that are contained here
Try and get your hands on a external charger as erpurohit has suggested or borrow a friends battery
Flashing back to stock or Darky's 10.2 should get your phone going again
Thanks folks for responses (did the button as well).
Did not need extra charger / battery. Sat it on charger all night with no change... So tonight when I came in tried one more time to put into download mode and it worked..
Tried connecting it to ODIN and it worked fully so installed Gingerbread stock and away the baby went.
Not sure root cause, but was not drivers.
Won't be installing ICS until it becomes more stable and does not put phones into boot mode without a simple way out.. (never say never though)
Cheers Anyway..
