I've found CNET's review states that the G2x supports up to 14.4Mbps HSPA+ (theoretical maximum) download speed. I've seen that on some other sites as well.
But I've also seen sites state that it supports up to 42Mbps theoretical maximum, which T-Mobile is currently rolling out in 3 cities (NYC, Orlando, Las Vegas), and more cities later in 2011.
Anyone know for certain? I was under the impression that the HTC G2 supports up to 14.4Mbps, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G supports up to 21Mbps, and now the G2x supports up to 42Mbps.
UNFORTUNATELY, the G2x only supports HSDPA 14.4/HSUPA 5.76. It seems kind of crappy that the best phone T-Mo has does not support the 21Mbps HSDPA that the Vibrant 4G does but that's life. It wouldn't cost them that much more to make the G2x a 21Mbps device like the Vibrant 4G but I have a feeling that they get a better deal from Samsung than from LG, just based on the line up of devices (Galaxy S aka Vibrant, Vibrant 4G, Galaxy S II). To me it isn't that much of a trade-off. T-Mobile doesn't have the backhaul in most places to support 21, let alone 42 but it is kind of frustrating that what is generally going to be considered T-Mo's flagship (what with dual-core and all) doesn't support at least 21Mbps.
At this time, the only device in the T-Mobile line up to support 21Mbps HSPA+ is the Vibrant 4G. I can tell you though, that after seeing 11.9Mbps HSPA+ on the myTouch4G, you really don't need it to be that much faster unless you're tethering and with the requirement of the new "4G" data plan that slow your speeds to currently unknown levels after 2GB of data transfer has been exceeded, you will blow through that 2GB quite quickly and be throttled to what I *assume* would be 384kbps downloads. Its a hunch and a total assumption. Who knows, they may do it by area and the backhaul they actually have to support that particular area.
Thanks for the unfortunate news. Yeah I agree it's a shame that their flagship device doesn't support at least 21Mbps. One less bragging point when my shiny new G2x arrives next week.

i dont mind sense we dont have 4g yet and by the time we get it (eau claire,wi) there will be a quad core out lol
and for the 21mbps i dont think a phone has hit 20mbps on 4g yet (i could be wrong)
just because it supports it doesnt mean the network can handle it...
i will be happy on Monday when i get my G2x if it even hits 3mbps download
well the G2X in the T-Mobile store i work in was getting 5 to Mbps down on every run of speed test i ran on it. which is better then my N1 so i am happy. Plus there is always wifi for those things needed to be downloaded now.
it is a slight letdown but im not too worried about it. My area just got 4g a couple weeks ago. I had no idea until I actually noticed a speed increase on my g1. At that time I tested it with speedtest.net app and was getting 2-3mbps down ~1mb up. To see my g1 getting those speeds I was very impressed! A nearly 2 and a half year old phone getting almost the same speed as my low tier cable lan line . As long as I'm getting 5-6mbps down in my area, I could care less . 5-6 looks like a great speed to go with a great phone. I'm just tired of my g1 being the bottleneck for my internet on my phone. It hangs on the browser and dls WAY to much :/

Hello,
I have been really interested in buying this phone for quite a while now. But with it being Triband and not supporting any 3G in the US (which I only really use for internet sharing), I am still wondering if I should spend the money and get this phone or another one. My main question is, even without 3G support, I should still be able to get Voice and EDGE coverage correct? I currently have a Cavalier (S630) which I can use for Internet Sharing only if need be. I still cant see why its not Quadband =( and oh yes, I am on AT&T.
Any help on this topic would be great. Thanks =)
Man why waste 600+ dollars for half a phone. you have waited this long just wait for the us version. Trust me. You have no idea how slow edge is. I used to live in 3G/HSPDA terriroty and now i dont. I havent used my kaiser for web surfing in a while becasue its painfully slow. Save the dough

I know how slow EDGE is, it sucks lol. The thing is I know how HTC likes to delay their phones all the time, and I really haven't seen a solid release for the US. I have seen Q2, but since they delay their phones so much you can never tell.
Edge won't work in part's of America either. The Diamond that is out currently is tri-band GSM and doesn't have the 850 mhz which is what at least part of America works on. It's possible, depending on where you live, that even the edge won't work for you.
You really need to wait for the American version to come out.

The specs on this site state that is has 850mhz band which is not correct. According to the detailed specs thread on the Diamond fourm it says the phone has a GSM band 1900. I went to www.gsmworld.com to look at the network for AT&T (1900mhz band only) and it covers the major cities and surrounding areas (almost exact same coverage map as 850mhz band) unless your in the friggin mountains.
Looks like the ink has been layed down. Verizon will install LTE in two markets this year with the FOA's being seattle and boston.
4g coming at yea verizon people. At&t wont have anything for another year (even starting). Testing for V. LTE should be done by the fall, and buildouts next winter/spring. Sounds like the equipment will provide for speedy buildout too.
Lucky Bastards! bah you can have your verizon. Ill stick with my dropped calls, bad handoff plauged At&t till they pry my Rapheal from my dead cold fingers.
I live in the seattle market, and have been a verizon customer for 10 years or so. I am excited to get world standard 4g rollout. Hopefully I can get a next gen device with evdo and LTE. wouldnt that be sweet. Maybe then Verizon will start lowering their plan costs so data won't be so f'in expensive.
Ive never even checked between the two main ones here (att/verizon) -
cost me an extra 30 for my data but its unlimited. Are you paying more then that?
Yea with atT saying 2012 till 4g, almost makes me wonder what my costs would be to switch up in the next year. Think ill see how the progress goes first.
Yeah, I pay more than that as I also pay for tethering. I know, I can get it free but it is more just to cover my ass if I get caught I would switch to ATT, but they just don't work in alaska outside of anchorage. ACS is a cdma provider up there, and Verizon even Has EVDO roaming agreements with them, so I am covered. I travel up there oftenso it is important to me.
Hopefully everyone will go LTE. Screw Sprint and its WiMax!

...and what device are you going to be able to test your 4G speeds on
You didn't hear of the super secret touch pro3 slated to come to verizon? it has a/b/g/n wifi, bluetooth 3.0, 500 hour battery life and a 1280X800 screen. Also has pnemonic input so you can think commands to it. Of course Verizon will cripple the RAM, cutting in half to only 2gb.
This is all speculation, theory and dreaming.
So ive had my nexus one on AT&T since march and I am very happy with the device. Then I got the text that they changed me to the 30 dollar plan. I dont have a contract anymore too and I can cancel any time I want. Im thinking of switching to T-mobile. I was gonna switch to sprint but changed my mind after I tryed the evo. 3g on sprint sucks and 4g is unreliable and non-existent in NYC yet. Ive heard many problems about the nexus one and the only problem I had on mine was a purple tint when its under 10% brightness. Does the t-mobile nexus one have problems? Is t-mobiles service good in NYC and in Brooklyn? Is hspa+ in NYC and in Brooklyn and how fast is it? I hope the t-mobile nexus one owners can help me out, especially the ones that are in NYC. I hope you guys can help me, Im starting to hate at&t and I love my nexus one
The nexus one was my first phone on t-mobile and I love it. T-mobile is great, their small enough to not be snobby carriers, yet large enough to have large coverage and service. I was an ATT'er before and I will never go back I love t-mobile, and their cheaper on average. As for NYC I cant really help you as Im a Vegas guy but cheers and good luck either way.
here is a thread that i just read, not sure how credible it is because I am not in NYC but this is a guy you may wanna have a chat with.
sorry cant find the thread anymore.
From what my cousin tells me, he is in Rockaway Township, NJ, He has very fast HSPA.
here is a bit of information that came up doing a search
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6454391
The Nexus does max out at 7.2mbps though so thats the absolute fastest you will get. Not to shabby IMHO
Re: nexus one, AT&T VS. T-MOBILE
You can't beat using T-Mobile, as their coverage and plans are greater than decent in the us . I've been with them for four years and wont be turning back any time soon. I don't do cdma and att has bad plans now. Im in Boston and go to BK and Manhattan, NYC often. I get great coverage there.
I was just in Manhattan with my T-mobile N1 and I found the coverage to be great. Didn't do any speed tests but got HSPA+ all the way. I'm sure ultimately ATT coverage is better but like the other poster said, T-Mobile is cheaper and their customer service is awesome. If you stick to the urban areas nationally you'll be pretty happy with T-mo service. If you're travelling in less populated areas you may find coverage lacking. That's what I've found anyway.
hspa+
how fast is hspa+ on the nexus one in Manhattan and in Brooklyn,NY? Im thinking about switching from my nexus on att and I wanna know how fast it is. In Brooklyn i get avg of 2 mbps and 2.9 mbps in manhattan. I have had peaks of 3.5 mbps. Also, does the tmobile nexus one have lots of problems, like 3g connectivity, cause on my att nexus, the only pproblem i had was a purple tint when under 10 percent brightness. Hope u guys can help me out

mets3214 do you know how to find forum topic discussions (aka threads) you've created already? if not we can help you out with that so you don't create 3 of basically the same topic. Also a good idea is to choose a title for your thread relevant to what you want to talk about. IE better title might be "HSDPA+ in NYC Area?", "Do these speed tests mean I have HSDPA+ in my area (NYC)?".
merged 'hspa+' to this thread to reduce duplication.
I am in Manhattan, I just did the speedtest with T-Mobile connection, average 3mb down and 1.2mb up. I live in Brooklyn with no drop call and the service is very reliable.
You are aware that if you go to T-Mobile with your AT&T Nexus you'll only get EDGE, right? They use different frequencies for 3G. You would need a different model of the Nexus to get 3G on T-Mobile.
I have been with Tmobile for almost two years and four years before that. I have tried Sprint and AT&T and have gone back to Tmobile two times. AT&T thier service is the worst, those commercials with the orange coverage maps - the orange on those maps show where thier service does not work. I live about 16 miles outside of Phoenix, AZ and with AT&T my service never worked at home. AT&T promised that they were going to put in a tower close to us that would allow us service but it was all lies. OK maybe not lies but it was taking to long. Tmobile works very well at my house can at times get a great connection and it appears thier Tech support that actually knows what they are doing. I am glad I have TMobile, service wise - Price wise it is comparable but still a little pricey for android phones with having to pay for the 30 dollar unlimited android web.
The Verge reports that Google has opted not to partner with any US carriers. Every Nexus 4 will be an unlocked device, and while that means no more pointless waiting for software updates (looking at you Verizon Galaxy Nexus), it also means no LTE radios.
The other small letdown is the phone's meager onboard storage options. The Nexus 4 starts at $299 with 8GB; $349 gets you 16GB

HSPA+ is fast enough.
Agreed.. but still $300 for an unlocked smartphone with those specs!!!!
You'd be stupid to pass up such a sweet deal! I'll gladly get over lte for that price
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
But this really concerns me the point of a quad-core when you don't have the storage to download more than 1-2 games that will utilize the specs? For example, most Gameloft and EA games that could use these specs are easily 1.8 gb or more. On an 8gb phone, unless you use cloud services, I'll cry within a few months for sure. I wish Google can ditch the idea of having only internal storage (Yeah !!! Like that's ever gonna happen but still) and come up with external storage like on the S3 and note 2 .. a 32gb MicroSD card for all my music, videos, camera pictures, files etc..
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
if I go with this I would use the USB OTG and stickmount app I use on my nexus 7. I've done pretty good using dropbox and a 16gb flash drive with my 8gb N7. Wondering if the photo sphere will be able to be ported to my Sprint SG3. And yeah 300 for a phone and no commitment is awesome.
Bummer. No LTE means a lost sale from me. Bandwidth is everything. Maps, directions, movie times, sports scores, traffic updates, email attachments... LTE.
Very strange decision by Google to abandon LTE.

T-mobile hasn't announced if there will be any differences from the Play Store version so no one knows at this point. But I would be surprised to see a different radio just for HSPA+42.

I suspect all that will be required is a different software radio, not hardware.

I suspect most people's experience with 3G is limited to crappy Sprint and VZW's 3G networks. In that case, it could be a deal breaker.....1-2mb/s down is pathetic. Now, T-Mobile users have no issue as their "4G" network is very fast. Not sure about ATT's, but I think it is similar to T-Mobile's now.
Sweet.. im almost gonna finish my job in india by the time I head back home i can depend on t mobile... and sell my unlocked s3 for public purpose and keep my note 2 for gaming, artist and business related purposes...... cuz im soooooooo gonna get the nexus 10... the screen ppi & battery.. this tablet screen hands down beats any ipads or any tablets on the market... Yeah you're probably right. CDMA 3g networks suck. The 3g gsm networks in the states are much better. As long as you have signal service of course.
I use a 3g tmobile and those speeds are enough. Not the higher speed 4g branded speeds either. The 7.2mbit HSDPA radio.
I agree that speed is good and all that. But I am really starting to get annoyed by people dropping LTE as nothing more than a buzzword.

Same here...I get like 5 down and 1.5-2 up on my 7.2 mbit radio so anything will be an upgrade. I suspect the Nexus 4 will top out around 10-12 down and the same 1.5-2 up on T-Mobile.

Bingo. The 3G service is deprecated and the apps are requesting more and more data. So when you initially said "none" you were completely wrong. For example, the WSDOT app I used now is updated, and slower than ever. It gets a GPS lock then just grinds forever trying to sync up the map and traffic advisory overlays. That's all data. Since I am paying for smartphone monthly usage, I am wasting money now by continuing with 3G. It makes zero sense to perpetuate paying for 3G service. It's not a buzzword when it's a significant upgrade in throughput, and it can be any other acronym and I'd use that just as much.
I still think google is off their rocker to "wait it out" as they put it. And the Maxx HD television advertisement says it can do voice and data at the same time, on Verizon... if true, that would be pretty huge for us Verizon folks and our terrible CDMA 3G access, going to LTE and simultaneous voice/data.
There is a difference between the gsm networks that the phone will actually run on and the CDMA /lte a Verizon or Sprint version would.
When people say I can't go without lte over att / T-Mobile networks for those tasks its rubbish to me.
Sure sprints and Verizon 3g is awful and I would never go back to them ( or have been on them in the first place) but we aren't comparing lte speeds to those. Its against the unlocked gsm networks.
Verizon network is great coverage wise. So is its lte speeds and coverage. Those are valid reasons to be with them and not switch.
But that I can't leave my lte speeds for a unlocked gsm phone because of the speed for the most basic smart phone tasks .is nonsense to me. That is what I am seeing more and more off. The omg I can't live without my lte /buzzword crap.
Didn't know where to put this thread, so hope I am in the right place.
I've been with Sprint almost 2 years (my contract ends in March)
Here is my experience:
My phone has been Epic 4G touch which never gave me good 4G speed regardless of rom/kernel/modem.
-The 4G coverage in my experience has been very bad, if i don't have a good connection I get around 1Megabit down and that's the case most of the time... (Brooklyn & Manhattan)
At it's best it has been around 3megabit down and 0.5 up on 4G.
The 3G is just plain horrible, around 100kilobit.
The voice service was okay but a lot of times calls would drop while driving.
One thing that I liked about Sprint was that I could roam to Verizon where coverage was poor.
I'm planning on ditching Sprint for T-Mobile, I am getting a great deal; since I have a family plan and it's going to be only extra $45 a month with unlimited 4G Voice & Text.
Sprint really sucks, I was suckered in my by "unlimited" 4G which was slow as hell.
-So basically unlimited slow 4G if you are lucky to get full signal.
I should note that I did not have true 4G phone, but WiMax. Don't know if the new LTE is any better, but from what I've read it's not.

More importantly, what phone will you be getting with T-Mobile? IMHO, service among carriers will vary greatly by location. There is no right or wrong provider, but if your experience has been bad, then do what you need to do. My primary concern would simply being able to get the phone I want with the carrier.
WiMax isn't neccesarily a negative - although there are minimum thresholds for LTE and all standards, your performance will depend on several factors including the aggregate use vs capacity of the networks in your area.

That's a good question, I was looking around and Nexus 4 seemed like the phone I want. Then I noticed the lack of SD Card and that is unfortunately a deal breaker.
I'll be going with a BYOD option as in the long run it is going to make more sense financially.
Maybe I could find someone on Craigslist to exchange the CDMA Touch for GSM SII.
The physical performance of the phone is pretty good, i don't think I really need anything top spec atm.
It even ran Linux pretty well with a VNC interface.
