Its a great program and all. I however dont flash roms. All I do is just update my kernel, I use one of existz's kernels. Anyway, I use Quickboot to boot into recovery to flash new kernels, and it seems to work fine. Recovery is Recovery, right? I've read a few things about SGS Kernel flasher, but have also read it can cause some issues.
The only reason I could ever see for ROM manager would be if you lost your copy of CWM.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
rom manager is only good for getting CWM onto your stock rom
So I should keep it? Just wondering. Trying to get rid of unused crap on my phone.
The only problem I've had with Kernel Flasher is getting in a hurry and forgetting to disable my lagfix (guar anteed bootloop).
I see. Ive never disabled it with CWM through ROM Manager. Am I supposed too?
i dunno what/where he was coming from talking about kernel flasher.
we were talking about rom manager...
if your kernel has CWM built in you do not need Rom Manager and the update.zip file.
CWM is BUILT IN to the kernel.
so if you dont need it get rid of it.
Oh. Ok...ya I dont rename anything to update.zip anymore. Let me read and see if that kernel has CWM
you dont normally rename anything. in rom manager the first button is download CWM. it downloads update.zip to your root SDcard directory and it uses that to "re-install package" from 2e 3e recovery. if you never see 2e/3e recovery anymore your kernel is probably CWM. what kernel are you using?
I use existz Captivate Kernel #8 lol. I don't think it has another name.

Op said he didn't like kernel flasher. Thought I would throw that out since he said all he wanted to do was flash a new kernel.
I have it. I never use it.

I have already the CWM via speedmod kernel. But I wanna know what happens if I install it also with the Rom Manager.
1. Which version I get via the Rom Manager? (I saw somewhere 1.4 is that right? but CM7 likes version 3)
2. How it actually works? When I read older threads my understanding was that Rom Manager actually doesn't overwrite the 3e recovery but just loads it on top of it. (uninstalling Rom Manager you get the old 3e somehow) In a later thread is just mentioned that it installs it.
3. Why isnt the kernel CWM recovery recognized in Rom Manager?
4. Will I be able to flash/upgrade roms via kies normally since I am still on stock, installing the recovery through Rom Manager.
5. In koushes thread is written "Flash back to stock kernel" if I flashed some other recovery I didnt, I used the kernel (speedmod) should I still flash back to a stock kernel WHY?
(pls dont post me links to the old CWM thread, I didnt understand it as you can see from my question )
Basically asking what will happen if I install CWM with the Rom Manager , having the speedmod kernel installed. (2 recoveries? which one will boot? etc etc)
sorry for questions that were probably answered in many threads.
I currently have ClockworkMod 2.5 and am trying to upgrade to 3 to install CM&. I currently have Doc's ROM, if that makes any difference.
ROM Manager doesn't give me any options to update to v3.
The CM7 wiki has steps to update for non-rooted users, but I don't think I need to do that.
I am looking for a CWM download to install via Odin. Is this the simplest method?
I've searched this forum as well as the web, and I can't find anything related to the Vibrant.
Any tips would be appreciated...
Do you know that Vibrant has its special sub-forum?
Edit: Yours is Bell's Vibrant. Never mind then. Just flash speedmod kernel.
That's it... Flash a kernel that it has cwm... Isn't depending of the rom.

Have you tried using ROM Manager and selecting Flash Clockwork Recovery?
For me it asked me what phone I was using (select Galaxy S MTD if you want to use CM7) and then asked what version of CMW I wanted. Just choose CWM3.x there and you should be fine. It will tell you that your current phone isn't supported, blah blah, but ignore it.
I'm sure he's going to install CM7, not already installed. Just use speedmod kernel. There's no need for CWM 3. If you got CM7 installed, it's automatically CWM 3.

Actually it is not completely automatic, you still need to flash a CWM3 recovery from inside ROM Manager, otherwise you can't see CM7 Nightlies from ROM Manager.
Thanks all.
I was able to get CM7 on my Bell Galaxy S.
I did try the ROM Manager but I couldn't get it to update CWM. It would try to install from Android recovery 3e, not CWM.
After many loops of stock 2.3.3, Doc's ROM 2.2.1, CM7 Nightly 15, and other steps, I was able to manually flash the nightly 18 using CWM.
For some reason, the update method for stock mentioned on the CM7 Galaxy S didn't work for me. Even after flashing speedmod kernel, I still came up with CWM 2.5.
Also, even with CWM 2.5, I was able to flash nightly build 18. Hope this helps someone else trying to update CWM.
I used SuperOneClick to root my phone, and now I'm looking through the Captivate Guide to see what else I can do with an unrooted phone. I started with Rom Manager.
So I clicked "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery," and it was fine. I select my phone (Galaxy S - Captivate, not the Captivate MTD). I pressed "Backup Current ROM," but when I press "Okay," it restarts my phone to the blue menu. So I press "reset phone now," and I try to start from the beginning again. According to the guide, it says to restart it until it works. It's rebooting each time instead with no change. When I go to manage and restore backups, nothing is listed.
When I load up Rom Manager, under "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery," it just says
"Current recovery: Clockwork mod 2.5.1.2
Latest Recovery: Clockwork mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I'm using stock 2.2 Froyo and GO Launcher with Cartoon Theme (if that matters).
I've already tried TRusselo's method regarding the 3e issue with stock 2.2 phones: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
Do I need SGS Kernel Flasher? If so, what kernel do I need?
/EDIT: Check my post 5 for my latest issue.
Why not just flash a KB1 kernel with cwm in it? I know Desing Gears cog 4.x.x kernels works, and probably eXistZ's kb1 kernel as well. They have cwm cooked in the + few other things like Voodoo, etc.
Also I believe your supposed to click install package as well. I could be wrong since its been a long while since I've used that method.

I'm much too amateur with phones to do that.
The only reason I decided to finally root my phone was because my warranty is up, and because I found TheUnlocker's youtube account + Captivate guide. I figured with step-by-step instructions, there's no way I could screw up. Boy, was I wrong.

I plan to use Cyanogenmod 7 eventually. The reason I haven't flashed a ROM is because I'm not 100% sure how yet. That's why I'm taking lots of small steps.
A lot of these ROMs also mention Odin, which I didn't use. I used SuperOneClick.
I went online and tried to flash my phone according to this guy's steps:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KvCxdYZ0nk
Okay, so even though I followed all of his steps, I get to the part where I'm supposed to find the MIUI file in my SD card, and it doesn't exist... even though I transferred it over. How come my phone doesn't recognize it? Phone is barely functional at the moment after I flashed it back to 2.1, and I'm encountering a lot of lag/bugs. If I plug in my phone to my computer without Debugging on, it fails to download drivers.
Does anyone know the best fix out of this situation?
I've successfully rooted my phone thanks to SuperOneClick, but am not able to figure out how to flash the recovery so that I can use ROM Manager.
I have a stock KB1 image, on an I897 Captivate from AT&T. I'm trying to get the recovery image (currently 3e) set so that I can bypass the signature check, which is what I keep running into.
I installed ROM Manager (the free one, at least until pay day) and tried to use that to flash CWM recovery. Every time I boot into recovery, I run into the confounded signature check.
I have a Superuser app installed from the Market, version 3.0.6(40) and su binary ver 2.3.1-ef.
I'm not typically a dunce, since I've been able to install and run a Linux server at home more than once. But this has got me stumped.
Please let me know what additional information I might need to provide to target guidance.
Read this. Please look at stickies and/or use the search function.
On a personal note, don't waste time on Rom Manager. Its trash for SGS line.
I hadn't seen that list previously. I spent 4 hours last night and three hours today reading stickies and stumbling through search results. That guide for fixing recovery might just be the answer I was looking for.
Is there a different "ROM manager" app that you recommend, or just bare-backing it (which I'm not afraid to do, either)?
Don't bother with it. IMO if you like stock froyo, I recommend just flashing Cognition 4.x.x. Based on KB2 stock looking, but tweaked for speed. CWM is easiest achieved by flashing a kernel with it baked in it.
to skip the recovery crap and rooting and everything else....
take phone out of box. (done)
download and run odin3 flashing util 1.8x Odin3v1.85.zip
boot phone into download mode
flash ginberbread bootloaders http://www.multiupload.com/QQ3LFSRBMD
reboot into download mode
flash custom kernel with CWM built-in pick one in dev section. ANY NOT miui/cm7 kernel in dev section.
reboot into recovery (cwm now!!)
mounts / usb/ copy rom to phone (if not on sdcard already can be done any time before)
cwm flash rom.
** cwm2 kernel for eclair/froyo roms & cwm3/4/5 kernel for gingerbread up
If you goal is to flash a new rom then TRusselo is right. Easier to just flash a kernel with CWM.
Rooted via super 1click and was unable to get clockwork recovery to load said it flashed but would only boot default recovery, soft bricked it 3 times then straight busted it getting the forced upload key press thing had to use USB jig to get download then used Odin to repair firmware some how 3g got switched off. Anyone got any ideas on how to switch back on my guess is key pad access but don't know the code amorphous smart apn from market but don't have the phone yet to try it my friend is gonna bring it this weekend just wanted to find out the best way to switch it back on before I get it back because grs gonna be there this time and I don't want to make him nervous or have him think I'm gonba mess up his phone

Stop flashing and read the stickies. If you tried using rom manager or update.zip it wont work unless you fix the 3e recovery issue. Its easier to flash a kernel with CWM baked in to it. For example if you are on froyo Cognition 4.x.x (search for it) kernel should work just fine.
I have a Samsung Captivate, and keep seeing people talk about CF-Root(I believe it's a program that roots so correct me if I'm wrong). I rooted my Samsung Captivate using Superoneclick. I want to flash Onecosmic's ICS rom for the Samsung Captivate, but people keep mentioning CF-Root. Do I have to unroot, and then re root using CF-Root? Or Since I now have CWM on Android 2.2(rooted stock) can I simply flash CM7, and then flash One Cosmic's Rc3.1 rom. Also can I flash CM7 from Android 2.2, or do I have to down date android back to eclair and then flash CM7. Thank everyone so much, and please help me move this to the correct area if it has already been made before. I searched on XDA and found nothing about "rooting different methods". Thanks again.
Rooted is rooted. If you have cwm then it doesn't matter what os you're on, in fact if you would have just flashed a custom kernel with Odin that has cwm compiled into it you wouldn't even need to root to flash a ROM.

Like Studacris said, root is root. You can also flash CM7 from Froyo. HOWEVER, if you don't already have CWM recovery (which is not the same as being rooted, and I suspect you don't actually have), you won't be able to flash CM7 from where you are now.
If you actually have CWM, you can just flash CM7 from 2.2. If you don't, follow the instructions here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
to get CM7 and go from there.
Studacris is right, flashing a kernel (any kernel) with CWM from Odin or Heimdall is the easiest way to go, and then use that kernel's CWM to flash from there. Because of Froyo's 3e recovery, rooting it doesn't gain you much in the way of flashing ROMs because the stock recovery isn't going to let you flash anything anyway, rooted or not.
I am rooted, and I actually do have CWM installed( 3 button combo works), but do I need to install CWM the way it says, or is using rom manager to do it ok?. I've rooted 3 inspires and have put the Revolution HD Rom on them. Just didn't want to mess up this Samsung. Thanks for the helpful comments.
ROM manager does more harm than good. Just get cwm and your golden. (by update.zip or kernel with it baked in. 3e recovery won't use update.zip)

This is what I was trying to explain. Just because you can get to the recovery console does not mean you have clockworkmod, unfortunately.
You have to install it the way the directions say to. You can try using ROM Manager, but it won't work on 2.2. You will get a signature verification error and it will stop. You can try it if you want, you won't mess anything up, it just won't work.
If you really think you already have it, reboot into recovery. If you have it, it will say "ClockworkMod Recovery Version x.x.xxx" across the top. If it does, just flash CM7 from there with the "Install Zip From SD" option. If it says "Samsung 3e Recovery" and doesn't have that option, you don't have CWM and you won't be able to flash anything from there, including a CWM installer.
As far as ROM Manager is concerned, I would recommend steering clear of it in general. It worked well in 2.1 but you can't use it to install CWM in anything since then and you tend to get odd behavior with it when using it to do anything else. Follow the ClockworkMod directions, I have used them several times with no issues.
Thanks apbthe3, you were 100% correct. I see that I have to flash a new kernel with CWM built in, thanks. I thought that it looked differennt than the CWM ON MY INSPIRE so I checked and it didn't load up CWM. Thanks again.
