Step by step required for installing rom on Rogers Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
I apologize if this has been asked before, but the Rogers threads I have looked at haven't really had the same issue I seem to be having, and it is hard to sift through 800 pages of a ROM thread to try to find the same problem, so once again I apologize
I have a Rogers Captivate, running a factory 2.2 Froyo, I was looking at Rom's that would be compatible, since there seems to be small issues between Rogers and AT&T programs, and I don't want any headaches.
So I was looking at Firefly has an option, I think I am following the steps correctly, but when I am in the recovery mode on the phone, attempting to hit the reinstall option only results in the phone saying "cannot verify signature, aborting" to that nature.
I have tried multiple times, can't seem to figure it out.
Notes:
-The phone is on 2.2 Froyo
-Yes it is rooted, with superuser available in the menu
-I have backed up with Titanium, all that jazz, cannot seem to install new ROM in recovery mode, I don't see the "green" text people are talking about, ROM manager is installed and I have flashed the latest recovery for Samsung Galaxy S Captivate.
Would greatly appreciate a step by step for someone with a Rogers 2.2 Captivate
THANKS!

[Q] Is cyanogenmod 6 rc2 radio upgrade important to flash

Hi all.
I had recently flashed cm6 rc2 without the radio via rom manager comming straight from froyo. While using the ROM today, I noticed a lot of processes crashed all at once including acore.
When I rebooted, I was stuck in a boot loop. I wiped stuff and did a nandroid restore to get back to my stock froyo, just fine.
Was it the radio that caused it (edit: seems like rom manager may have snuck it in). Since I flashed cm6 from ROM manager, I thought it would prompt me if I needed the radio. What went wrong?
The radio on the first post of the CM6 RC2 thread is the required radio and must be flashed separately if you are not already using that radio. If you are on stock froyo you most likely are.
Radio Firmware: 4.0.6.00.12_7 (FROYO RADIO, REQUIRED!)
Check this by going to: Settings - About Phone - Baseband version
If you are not on the correct radio you can flash by downloading the zip on the first page of the CM thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722798
If you update again try wiping and a reboot into the mod before your nand restore. Some common issues/fixes are in the link below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7418214&postcount=2055
Good luck to you.
Please read the instructions next time instead of posting a new topic.
Edit: Actually, after reading your other post, I'd say, stop what you're doing, reflash to stock, and please don't do anything more. I can see you'll be a headache for all the other users in the future as you refuse to read first then ask questions. Everything you need to know is in the first post of the CM6 RC2 thread and the wiki that is linked within that post. If you can't handle that much, please do us all a favor and don't flash custom roms.
I'm waiting for the "My phone iz bricked now" thread to arise...In the right forum next time I hope!
It's lame topics like this that get budding roms pushed to the back of the list.
chesh is right though, you need to learn by reading first. The search button is your friend.

Mind you. I read those instructions 1 million times. I chose not to flash it because a website said you only need it if you are comming from froyo. I had also seen a video of someone running cm6 without the radio. So I thought I was fine

So are you saying that the 4.0.6.00.12_7 is the radio needed to use cm6 or does it mean I need to flash the radio

4.0.6.00.12_7 is the Froyo radio that is required for using CM6 or Froyo roms. Froyo will work with the earlier radio, but you'll have issues with camera, video camera, MMS, SMS, and a whole slew of other things. There is another radio floating about that's from the Korean version of the Nexus Ones, and has a higher version then the initial Froyo radio, but at this time, doesn't seem to change anything. So, the way you check which radio you already have (as most Froyo roms don't come with the radio, you're required to flash it on your own) is to go into Settings -> About Phone and check what version of the radio you have listed in there. If it is anything other then the above version, then flash the above version.
Follow this guide to the "T" and you won't have any issues. And, BTW: this guide is linked in Cyanogen's original post in the CM6 RC2 thread. (Please visit the CyanogenMod Wiki for step-by-step installation walkthroughs and tons of other useful information.) http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_Nexus_One
Strangely enough, i have that radio even though i didn't flash it. is it possible it came from rom manager when i installed cm6 or could it have been there when i got froyo

turns out i have the radio, even though i didnt flash it (unless its not the baseband you mean) i think rom manager snuck it in- could this be possible
if you flashed froyo previously then the radio got updated with that full ROM.
one more thing, for some reason the clockwork recovery keeps dissapearing. it changes to an exclamation mark in a white triangle with a mini green android. it just dosent like me!
Once again, see my previous post where I linked you to the Cyanogen Wiki with complete, step-by-step instructions of how to install all of this manually. I would suggest the manual route, as it seems you need the practice with the commands.

what im saying is that every recovery image i use disappears after i have been in the recovery image more than once Even Amon ra's recovery!
Which means you haven't done some part of the process right. I remember hearing about this once before. Just start from the very beginning of those instructions (including unlocking bootloader). Not going to harm anything if it's already been done.

Are you sure. I searched slot and I didn't find anything about recovery images reseting. I am in need of help.
One thing about the rooting process, all I did was unlock the bootloader and install su permissions. It's hard to find detailed and I mean detailed instructions on rooting a nexus one and installing a recovery image.
do a wipe
i did everything again except unlock the bootloader again because i am not sure of the result of that if you have already done it. do you think a factory restore would do the trick in setting or do i need to http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/Opera...-Nexus-One-to-shipping-Rom/m-p/292051#U292051
Did you do all the steps in the Cyanogen wiki that I linked you, exactly as they were? Because, if you did, you wouldn't still be having a problem. See, this is what I'm saying, you keep on posting, but you don't want to follow any instructions. Why don't you follow that t-mobile guide, and give up on installing custom roms.
And, are you saying this isn't detailed enough?? http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_Nexus_One

I mean, I found all of those in the last 45 seconds. Come on man. You obviously just can't follow instructions. What you need is the 5yr old from down the block that keeps beating your a$$ at MW2 to do it for you.
why dont you post a video showing exactly what happens. show it booting into recovery, then trying again and recovery disappearing.
Would just let everyone know I fixed it. I've been reading alot and now allmost fully understand the rooting and flashing side of android. Sorry for this noobish post. Will never happen again

I fixed it differently from how you said I should do it even though I tried to do what you said.
Also. I OWN at WW2... you have no idea. Being cocky doesn't fix anything.
Also I know how it feels when there is a new generation of android hackers joining the community. I was with the iphone hacking community from the start. I miss the days when hacking was harder. Don't start saying I can't follow instructions on the rooting process because it was a nandroid restore that stuffed everything up. I rerooted twice just to make sure.
I hate being taken as a noob. Everyone starts somewhere.

Rooting and installing new rom. Non-noob inside.

Okay, I've done my fair share of searching numerous forums. So, please don't flame for some noobish questions.
I owned a G1 before and had no problem re-flashing a new rom image every other day. Maybe it's the price tag on my N1 that has had me hesitating with rooting it.
Ok, here is my 'problem' I just got the new OTA update FRG83. I would like to know exactly how I would go about rooting and installing a new ROM on my N1.
Also, what ROM is the best out there for the N1, I used cyanogen on my G1 forever so I really trust his ROMS.
Basically I'm just really afraid of messing my phone up, although I'm sure it's just as easy as it was on my G1.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Right... I've read that.
Just making sure I'm following the correct steps.
First: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792016
Second: Does bootloader have to be unlocked?
Third: Recovery Image
Fourth: Wipe/flash new rom
Anything I'm missing?
No need to unlock - the whole point is rooting w/o unlocking.
Flash the recovery using flash_image method.
Nothing else missing.

As for a ROM to use, I use Enomther's official Nexus. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614427 I have tried several different ROM's and this one is hands down the best. I have not used CM6 since RC1, so I cannot speak for how that is now. But Enomther's was way better than CM6 RC1 IMO.
I'm with stickerbob with being rooted and loved enomther's. Now I've moved to MIUI, and I don't believe I'll be looking back anytime soon. Love MIUI, once I flashed the English translation pack 3 that is =D it rocks IMO. If you wanna look into it after root...

FireFly Q&A

Hey Guys I put together a Q&A thread for this rom to prevent tons of new threads about rom Spicific questions from new users.. Please feel free to post any questions here.
As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.
Great idea Zel, I am here to help.
I will try to answer the questions the best I can and then have a list of FAQ in this post so people can easily access them.
FAQ
How to flash FireFly? (Method one)
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
How to flash FireFly? (Method two) - the one I usually do
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!

ok..lemme do the honors....quick ques...am flashing firefly 2.2(downloading it now)....i flashed back to stock JF6...do i need to flash to some base ROM for firefly 2.2 to work??
I'm asking cause i was on darky8.1, then flashed directly to 9.3b1 which resulted in incorrect orientation(i9000), then i read the instructions which expected me to flash to base(resurrection), then flash a captivate fix and then flash to 9.3b1...!!!!
You should be able to flash directly as long as you flash FF 2.2 full not the update package.

Nope, you can download the FF 2.2 from the site. LINK
Pick any one of the mirrors. This will get you FF2.2 with the clock in the status bar.
If you want to remove the clock, you can flash the no clock package.

I flash to FireFly 2.2 and its looks awesome + I've been looking for a ROM that had the fix for when I connect the AUX cable to the car radio I can talk to anyone on the phone and hear them on the car speakers... This ROM has that fix finally, I love it... no more Blutooth head sets. But I have a big issue and is that when I make my 3rd or 4th reboot my phone freeze on the "F" boot logo. It does that vibrating action once and then twice like when there's an error. I have flashed my phone before so many times and had no issues and I have been using all FireFly ROM's ever since It came to life. This 2.2 ROM I have flashed like 4 times and I keep having the same problem and I don't want to flash any other ROM only but this one. What can be the reason for this problem? Please Help!

Not sure! but the only one I can think of would be "Launcher Pro", but I have always used it, and this problem has never happened. When you install it, you need to reboot again in order for Launcher to take effect. I do need to point out that before this flash I when to stock with Odin. I never have the need to do this cause I use too flash directly from "Rom Manager" but lately I was noticing that when I flash using ROM Manager It wasn't taking me to the green menu, it was taking me to what I think it was the stock menu with blue, yellow and a red letters where red was an error message,so that's why I decided to go to stock and then I did all the steps needed in order to flash a New ROM using the thread from the development section then I flash FF 2.2 and ever since when I boot like for the third or fourth time it freezes. I hope for a solution... I'm only digging FireFly right now cause lets face it...
Thanks a lot for your attention...
Several Questions
I've been using Firefly since it came out and upgraded to 2.2 last week. I do have a couple questions after having used 2.2 for awhile.
1. Why were the dark apps removed (gmail & market)? It seems like Firefly has a darker theme and using the modified apps as default makes sense. Maybe a CWM zip containing all the dark apps would be an option or links to the forum pages? I was able to find dark versions of Gmail, Voice, Gtalk, and the Market by searching, but I think it would make more sense from a theming sense for these to be included by default.
2. What's the best way to remove the Samsung Apps? I flashed the zip and messed around with it a bit, but realized I don't need it. You can't uninstall it like normal apps so I was thinking about removing it with TiBu, but I don't want to mess something up. Suggestions?
3. I searched around the forums, but I haven't been able to find a simple answer to this: does this rom support call recording? Is this a kernel issue or simply a rom feature that Firefly hasn't implemented? If this is something simple to do without losing theming, I have no problem with that, if not consider this a feature request.
4. Not sure if this is a Firefly issue or an ESPN issue, but since flashing 2.2 my ScoreCenter app keeps reverting to the user Tron98001. I don't know who this is or how it got on my phone, but it keeps changing all my settings. Everytime I delete the app and wipe the data, it defaults to that same user when I install it again. If I change the user and settings, within about a day it reverts back. Again, I'm thinking this is an ESPN issue, but I was just wondering if anybody was having the same issue since I didn't have a problem until upgrading to 2.2.
You can always try different modems, to see which one works best for you.

1. There were too many bugs involved with the dark apps. I decided that it is best to include stock and let users decide based on their preference.
2. I will have to create a CWM zip that takes care of this. It is not as simple as uninstalling.
3. This ROM does not have call recording. It is considered illegal in many states, to record calls without consent of the other part. I just want to stay away from the mess. Users can install that option on their own.
4. That definitely looks like an app issue.
I believe my ROM is more toward the neutral side and I dont wont to force themed apps (that are buggy) or features that can get them in trouble.
I am just being honest.
Let me know if there are more questions.
As FF is rogers based, can it support usb audio out through the car dock? I downloaded the rogers car dock app and no joy. Changed the kernel to FB2, which should have the fix, and still no joy.
Thanks for the amazing rom though!

Not sure! but the only one I can think of would be "Launcher Pro", but I have always used it, and this problem has never happened.

I did run into this problem when I flashed Fire Fly 2.2. The only way around it was to uninstall Launcher Pro and then install it again. I am not sure what caused the problem but this did solve it for me. The one downside of this is that all the screen setups that I had got removed. But that is minor to me since I move things around all the time any way.

That fix is still in the works in Xcal's kernel. We will have to wait till it is implemented all around.
Thanks for your quick response. I'll wait for the CWM zip to remove the Samsung Apps. I understand the legallity of call recording and it is something I just wanted to try out, anyways I have a follow up question then: if I apply the phone.apk and libs I found (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938860) would I lose the theming of the dialer that comes with Firefly by default? Do you know of any reason why this wouldn't work?

[Q] Help adding ClockworkMod on my Galaxy Tab

Hi All,
Before I start I want to say this is probably a very noob question, and I've tried searching the forums with little success (I don't fully undertand a lot of the information). Now, my question/issue.
I've rooted my device using SuperOneClick (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812367) and had no issues. Using ROM Manager I can't seem to get ClockworkMod installed. I select the "flash clockworkmod recovery" option then select "galaxy tab att" (I'm in Canada with Rogers but I assume it will work as there both GSM). It pops up that it successfully downloaded but then never installs. Is there a better way to do this? Any help would be appreciated.
You obviously haven't even bothered to check or search the development section. If you had you would already know how to do it.

Thanks for the friendly response. I actually did search the developer forms and didn't understand anything that I found. Which is why I asked here in the general form, I assumed it would be a way to get a better answer more suited for a less experienced user like myself.

OH AND ALSO, you would know to post in the Q&A section NOT IN THE GENERAL section.
Just flash the overcome 1.6 kernel (and the rom together) see dev section.
Or try stock Gingerbread rom from chainfire and flash his jq1 kernel after that

Considering I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make clockworkmod to work, and the articles in the dev section don't make a lot of sense to me I'm doubting that will make anything easier. I was told this was "the forum" to go to for help with Anrdoid work, I guess I should have been told that is only true if you already know how to do everything. Is there a better form for beginners?
Everybody once was a beginner. If you read the overcome manual, you'll know everything for flashing your tab. If you don't understand what the manual is about, then perhaps you shouldn't even consider flashing it.
Why do you want clockworkmod so badly?
The clockworkmod is intergrated in the kernels i just mentioned.

I will track down and read that manual, thanks. Regarding why I want cwm it is (as I understand it) the easiest way to install or change your existing rom. My end product is I want Gingerbread on this device, and I thought this would be the best way to install that rom.

Yes but you are expected to first "read" and then "learn". If you cant follow guides as simple as the ones here then you really shouldn't be attempting to flash anything to your device yet. At least not until you have read various topics.

Go here and download and read the attached guide.

Another bricked phone after oden. 1011. Help!!

I thought I knew what I was doing...
I've read and read and read. Thought I had all my ducks in a row. Thought I had everything figured out. But now I have a bricked phone.
I bought my Captivate refurbished from AT&T about 3 months ago. The mfg date is listed as 1011. It came with Froyo. By the third day I had it rooted and Cognition installed. Loved it. But lately it was starting to freeze up, lag, etc. so I decided to install Serendipity.
I followed the directions in the famous How-To thread here.
Odin reported success, but now my phone is stuck in bootloop. None of the tricks for getting it back into download mode worked.
I went to Radio Shack and bought some resisters and made a jig. Now, I can successfully get back to download mode now, so I'm still holding out hope!
I tried Odin again, but got the same result.
My warranty is up in 3 days. Called warranty place today and they won't do anything unless the phone can get to a recovery screen (probably their way of knowing when people have been doing what I've been doing!). Which it won't. I can put it in download mode with the jig. Otherwise, I just get the boot loop.
I have been stressing over this for the last 15 hours. I can't sleep. I've read countless forum posts. Now I find that Odin with Froyo and phones dated from 1008 and above is tricky. How did I miss that before? I've read so much, seen so many threads with people saying "do this" followed by "no don't do that" followed by "that's always worked for me" but it's not working for ME. At this point I'm confused and scared and just hope somebody can point me to instructions for getting a usable phone again.
EDIT: I see I misspelled "Odin" in the title of the thread... tried to edit it but I can't. Sorry.
That guide has not been updated for 2.3 roms. you should follow the instructions that were written by the rom maker, for the rom your trying to flash
This looks relevant http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
- For unbricking
AdamOutler, is working on a unbrick method. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206216
Or mobiletechvideos they have an unbricking service for 50$
(side-note if you have read and read like you said you should have had come a cross some of this.)
Which Cognition were u on ? And which Odin did u use ?
And since u can still get into Download mode u can relax a little, cause that's a good thing.
Lol relax If the phone shows any signs of life, that means it can be fix (usually). Now if the phone after odin doesn't want to turn on THEN your bricked. Since your phone is a newer build and they have been known to not always like jf6 Odin I suggest you try this KB1 odin. Best of luck

Know that now! lol The instructions for Serendipity indicated I didn't have to go back to stock. But I just wasn't sure. So I figured I'd go ahead back to stock just to "be safe." That worked out well!

Which Cognition? Uhm... I don't recall. Whatever was the newest version when I installed it nearly 3 months ago.
I used the Odin One-Click. The filename is I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0. When I run it, the title bar says Odin3Execution_v1.0.

Thanks! I'm reading through the threads y'all linked to and I'm sure I'll be back with questions. This whole Odin thing, for one, has me confused. There's at least a dozen different versions available from samfirmware.com, there are different versions of the one-click (like the Designgears 2.2 one? Should I try that one?), then different "full" versions with different instructions ("only use the pda button," "use this pit file", "don't use a pit file", etc...) I'm trying my best to make sense of it all. I was in full-blown panic mode yesterday and trying to read through a dozen different threads at once. Maybe today I can slow down a bit, take a breath, and get this figured out.
The one click I linked should get you to stock. Atleast so you have a funtional phone. There is only one true odin with different versions (1.1 1.82 etc) one clicks r simplified odin that will only flash something specific like 2.1 jf6 or 2.3.3 kf1 to name a few. Samfirmware.com uses the actual odin as it supplies packages for it.

Ok, another sucky thing is I'm on satellite internet and already dangerously close to being FAP'd. I've got to run into town this evening and will try to find some free wifi so I can download those things. Until then... it's just reading threads.
One quick question... that's a one-click you linked to? Posts 33 and 34 say to use regular Odin, not one-click. They provide a link to download regular Odin. Is the I897UCKB1-homeBinary.tar file part of the package I download from the link in the first page? The one-clicks I've downloaded have just been an .exe file.

Because I'm a derp and didn't read it well. Regardless its the package files for stock KB1 use regular ODIN for it. Stick it in PDA. It doesn't have bootloaders so the possibilities of hard bricking are very low xD. My mistake for saying it was 1 click sorry xD
Ok, thanks. I'll post an update tonight after I get back home.
SUCCESS!!!
I now have a fully functional phone running what appears to be stock 2.2 firmware!!
THANK YOU!!!!
However... I can't seem to get into recovery mode. When I hold down all three buttons, it looks like I'm stuck in a boot loop again (ATT World Phone screen flashes). If I release the power button keeping the volume buttons held down, the phone just boots as normal. Is there a fix for this?
I still have all the folders for my old apps on the internal memory card. Can I delete these manually? I'd like it to be back to truly stock settings and start all over. Is that what the "Master Clear" in Odin is for? I didn't see that option in "regular" Odin.
I did get it rooted with Super-One-Click.
Ok, this is where I'm at.
Stock Foyo working phone.
Can't boot into recovery using volume & power buttons.
Rooted with Super One Click.
Installed Superuser.
Installed Rom Manager. At least now I can boot into Recovery Mode through the option in Rom Manager.
Flashed Clockworkmod using Rom Manager. Reported success, but Recovery Mode is still stock version 3e, not 2e. So, still can't install a new custom rom.
I'm a little nervous to try anything else at this point, but really want to be running Serendipity. Serendipity says DO NOT use Rom Manager to install it.
What to do from here? I'm researching, but any pointers would be helpful.
If I install Cognition again from Rom Manager (is that possible/safe at this point?), will that replace the Recovery Mode with 2e? Or is that not related at all?
not related at all.
you should really take the 30 seconds to search for that error you get when you try to reinstall packages from 3e recovery.....it would solve your problems.....
or do it the EASY way and just ODIN a freaking kernel on it that has built in CWM.
flash your rom of choice from CWM

You are in 3e recovery because you are running froyo. Flash to the stock 2.1 eclair and that will get you back to 2e. There are other ways but thats the most basic I feel.

I'm trying... but 1) satellite internet is frustratingly slow - not much better than dial-up at times; and 2) each path of research I take leads to several forks with several different people giving several different solutions to problems, some people saying it worked, some people saying it didn't, which leads to several more alternative solutions, some of which don't work, etc... It gets confusing after a while, but I'm trying my best to read through all the threads I wander through and to make sense of it all. Yeah, I'm a stupid newbie....

Op look at the bottom of the first post of the odin one click thread by design gears there are 2 stock firmware packages the first one is an eclair build use the full version of odin (not one click) flash that and you're good.
Or search for the work around of 3e recovery, look in the sticky roll up at the to of the general section...it'll say "e: signature verification error"

Yes, I tend to rely to heavily on the search feature and overlook sticky threads. Thanks for the reminder.
The "Fixing 3e" methods listed in this thread don't seem to be working for me. First method (the script) gives me an error. Tried with Win 7 64bit, and 32bit (two different computers). Yes, phone drivers were installed. Second method (manual copying of the file) doesn't work. When using Terminal Emulator to execute the command I get the message "Operation not permitted." When using ES File Explorer with Mount file System as writable checked in the settings, I get no errors or complaints... but nothing has changed when I boot into recovery.
Still working on it. Thanks for the pointers.
why dont you try one of the ODIN KERNELS that will add CWM for you? why are you wasting your time running in circles for nothing?
put phone in download mode
open ODIN, add the kernel into the PDA slot
connect phone
flash kernel
now you have CWM and can flash any 2.2 rom you want

After softbricking (is that the right term?) my phone with Odin, it makes me a little nervous. (Of course, I also recovered my phone with Odin, so maybe I shouldn't be nervous...).
This running around in circles...? We'll call it "education"!
