Sounds like a warranty replacement, usually they make you keep the battery and back of the phone. I don't know what the law says about refurb equipment, I thought they had to put a sticker on the lable near the IMIE but I can't confirm that.

Apparently someone was messing with my phone yesterday while it was charging and messed up the usb connector on the bottom. (My kids) My question is if I buy a TILT outright, can I swap the bad one with the good one and return it?
I know in australia that you have to provide ID when returning products for any reason, it safe guards against exactly what you are trying to achieve.
You don't have insurance that could cover the replacement?
The IMEI & Serial numbers are all over the sale. Receipt, Box, Device, Sale, etc...
I guess I will put it on my homeowners policy. I figured the IMEI and serials would be the catch but thought I would ask. Thanks for the help.

I need to have my Tilt serviced under AT&T warranty and I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the Device Support Center?
I am debating whether I should use the mail exchange or take the phone to the Device Support Center.
I understand that you only get a refurbished replacement using the mail exchange.
My question is, if you get your phone exchanged at the Device Support Center, do you get a new unit or a refurbished unit? The AT&T website says that they will "swap" the phone, but no mention of whether i's a new or refurbed unit.

i did the mail exchanged and i got a refurbished one it took a week tho but you couldnt tell its refurbished been using it for a couple of months now and it just like brand new
Pretty much all places will give you a refurb after 30 days. Should they give you a new one if your used one is broken?
Traditionally the DSC only carries refurbs in stock. The best way to get a NEW model would be to call the warranty dept over the phone and request a new model. However, it is not a garauntee that they will reissue you a new phone unless they no longer have any seed stock equipment in stock.
But, AT&T fully tests the refurbished models before placing them in stock and should a refurb go bad, then you are welcome to call the warranty dept again stating that the refurb has gone bad and to replace it with a new one so that the problem doesnt continue to happen or get worse.
Lastly, keep in mind that regardless of when you get a phone from the DSC or the Warranty Dept, the ORIGINAL warranty still applies. So they only warranty the phone for 1 year from the original phone purchase date or 90 days if the phone is outside of the 1 year after replacement.
Hope this helps.
Glenn
Oh I think we have an at&t employee or ex employee trolling around the forum.

I don't mind getting a refurb unit, but I don't want to end up with one of those earlier models with the usb/battery problem.
I was trying to see if anyone has had any experience with getting the phone exchanged at the "Device Support Center." Since ATT exchanges the device on site, I guess I could at least make sure the phone functions and that there're no visible defects.

I got my AT&T Tilt exchanged twice at the DSC in San Diego, California. They only carry refurbs but you really couldn't tell (well, I could for the first refurb I got...).
I'm not sure what 'usb/battery problem' you're referring to as my original Tilt that I got back in October 2007 didn't have that problem. Anyway, the two refurbs that I got were already loaded with the 'latest' ROM update released from HTC+AT&T.
Hope it helps.
Just a bit of info.
My dad's star trek's usb port died on him. AT&T sent him a wizard to replace it.

i do say things like that a lot. besides one of my stores is 2 blocks from the local DSC so it gets said more there than anywhere else.
ok for people who have actually been to a DSC...what is their protocol? do they carefully inspect the devices warranty voiding spots (black void sticker over back housing screw and white water damage pad) and do they inspect for physical damage closely?

Last week my touch screen stopped working. My att warranty has expired but I still have a htc manufactures warranty. I have two problems with the rma service. One is they said if it had ever been opened by anyone but an HTC representative it viods the warranty. I warrantied my phone to att in July and they gave me a refurbished phone. Could this phone have been opened by Att which would void my warranty? Second problem, did anyone else rma their phone for a touch screen problem and it was covered by htc's warranty. They said if its not a manufacture problem then it would cost me to fix it and if I didn't want to fix it, it would still be 35 dollars. Does anyone know if this problem is considered a manufactures problem?
Hey... I used to work in an RMA deptartment.. and your phone is probally flagged/marked that it ia a referb... and HTC does not warrant referbs unless they are bought directly from them... I don;t mean to be a downer, but want to save you the $35 fee when they tell you that it is not under warranty... would would ned you orignal phone for that (Plus they probally want a copy of the opriginal receipt which will show a IMEI # diffrent that what you have now)... So either way man.. sorrt
So you used to work in the HTC RMA department? Because I've working in other companies and delt with RMA's and they would take care of as if it had the normal warranty. So unless you actually have worked for HTC I wouldn't share that info as if it were HTC's company policy.
If the screen just failed then that would be considered manufacture error in most cases, what they are talking about is smashed screens or things that you would have done to break it. (like take it apart).
I would think that at&t and HTC has some arrangement worked out so that the refurb isn't a problem. IF anything just openly ask the HTC rep if that is a problem.
I have delt with HTC as the company I worked RMA for resold their products so I DO know I am talking about.. maybe you should be the one who shouldnt share info...
And with ANY company I have EVER delt with, REFURBS do NOT carry the same warranty as retail new... How would it benifit either company if HTC has a "Special deal" with AT&T? Then HTC would have to fix out of warranty products for free (cost them money) and AT&T would loost the same of a new phone that you would have to buy if it is broken... Also, as stated before, the refurb will have a diffrent IMEI # than the one he originally bought... HTC WILL want a copy of the original invoice, and AT&T print the IMEI # right on it... HTC will then see it is diffrent and deam it OOW (out of warranty)...
in several cases the refurb is considered the repair (fix) for the broken device there for retaining the original phones warranty. Also, why wouldn't at&t have a special deal, at&t has a modified and rebranded htc phone that happens to also carry an htc warranty. (the htc warranty is longer then the at&t one)
you can have 2 types of refurb devices, one that you purchase as a refurb or a replacement for a device that can't be repaired. (like so many people are getting) Wouldn't that be a rip off to purchase a brand new device with a 12 month warranty, then it breaks and you're sent a refurb as the repair and now you have a 90 day warranty instead of the 12 month you should have?
Yeah I don't think you know what you're talking about, as for sharing info I am not saying anything is for sure and you are. So I think my advice is a bit better then yours.
When I read HTC my serial number they told me it was still under warranty. Since this is the s/n of the refurbished phone, wouldn't that mean its under warranty? I also made clear to them that it is not my original phone but a refurbished one received in July. What I am concerned about is if ATT opens the device and voids my warranty since there are some markings in the device that tell its been opened. Since this is not a htc representative it would void my warranty? I'm not sure how refurbished phones from ATT are dealt with.

at&t is either an authorized repair center for that phone or they use one (maybe they even have HTC send them the refurbs) . I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just make sure that they know about it being a warranty replacement refurb from at&t by having them add it to their notes. You can call back a little later and confirm they are in the notes if need be.
Hello, my first post here and i'll be honest, i haven't done much research or searched this forum (fresh problem, not enough time), but believe that my problem might be unique so please bear with me.
The phone in question is in lithuania - is locked to T-mobile, the seller will try to unlock it, i almost bought the phone but couldn't figure out course of action to unlock it since i'm neither Tmobile customer, neither have receipt for this phone, furthermore i found corrosive like damage under the back cover of phone.
What worries me is lack of PN SN barcode sticker in picture 01 (i wasn't comfortable to post numbers i found there, so i blured them out), "molten" plastic damage seen in all 3 pictures, copper something sticking in picture 02 below camera (i believe it may be bluetooth or other antenna) and overall opinion about extent of damage found here. Otherwise the phone looks fine on the outside, touchscreen works, no dead pixels, minimal bruises on case.
Origin of phone is from USA, guy bought both of them there (one for his wife but she didn't like this "brick"), his own phone also sports deformed plastic inside, but seems to work so i'm at loss here, what may be the cause of this deformation, is it normal or what..? Dealer seems like honest guy who may actually be duped himself...
How much did you pay for that? Were these issues made clear pre-sale? Did you get it off eBay?
That is not normal at all. As well, with no serial # and the semi-stripped screws I would bet the phone is either a) refurbed or b) stolen/made of stolen phones. I don't know of many refurbished phone sellers that remove serial #'s and FCC labels that are reqiured by law to be on the device.
to pjcforpres>>
i almost bought it, the seller was honest enough to return money, will try to unlock then we may meet again and try to check is phone working at all.
Considering new like appearance of outside he was surprised himself (i won't judge him, returned money afterall, almost got duped myself).
I haven't bought it from ebay, because couldn't find anything on ebay that would be of reasonable price and send to lithuania (we are known of failure, i won't deny) - was tracking few days ago developer phone on co.uk, but friend with excelent feedback couldn't even attempt to bet because lithuania is a no no
The phone came with american like charger - it is possible that it was stolen in USA and sent here or sold to the poor guy back there. As i mentioned above, his own phone sports damage though he uses his phone just fine. About missing SN stickers.. well ... what can i say?
Phone price goes 540 lithuanian money with going course (3.4528 Eur, 2.3758 $) approx 156 Eur or 227$. Issue about unlocking was told beforehand, i haven't predicted that it could pose a problem.
As long as you got your money back. You might want to try calling a seller/emailing an eBay seller and seeing if they would sell to you on the basis they don't ship until the payment fully clears, I would bet most retailers and some eBay sellers would be willing to work out/accept something along those lines.
If you ask me it looks like somebody tried to glue the back cover on...
To me it looks like it got run over by a truck...
Hi. So I recently bought a used Note 3 on craigslist. The phone works perfect. I inserted my Sim and have been using the phone with no problems. I decided to stick with my G3 and tried to sell the Note online. Come to find out there is something weird about the IMEI number. The number on the status screen comes up as blacklisted. There is a different IMEI number under the battery that comes up as valid.
As I said the phone works fine, but I dont know what is going on. The seller is obviously not being very helpful with my questions.
I have read about people illegally changing the IMEI numbers on phones. Is this what happened?
Why is the number under the battery the valid one? I assumed that if someone messed with the software the number on the status screen would be valid and the one under the battery would be blacklisted. The sticker under the battery looks legit.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
They could have changed it, but what I think is more likely is that they changed out the screen at some point and left the wrong sticker on it. On most newer Samsung phones the IMEI sticker is on the screen assembly, so when you install a new screen you have to swap the stickers too. I'm a phone tech and I always swap the stickers whenever I put a new screen on a device just to avoid this kind of confusion.
I personally would aggressively pursue a refund cause you could end up with an expensive paperweight even though it works fine at the moment. Involve the police if the seller decides to get salty about it, cause it's technically fraud.
Thank you for the response. Why would swapping out the screen change the IMEI? Which IMEI is the phone currently using?
The seller is no help.
Open the dialer screen and press *#06#
Don't press send. It will give a notification of what imei the phone is using.
I did this. The blacklisted one comes up.
I don't doubt what you're saying is true. But who says it's blacklisted? If it's an internet source I'd call the carrier. The carrier can tell you why it's blacklisted, and depending on the case it can un-blacklist it.
I also don't understand how a blacklisted device is working.
Unfortunately if it is blacklisted, you've been scammed. Contact the police. The more info you have, the more they can help you. If you have the sellers phone number, address, and description of them you might have a chance. Otherwise all you can do is sell it as a blacklisted device.
You are as confused as I am. Hence my post. Lol
I used Swappa to verify.
The number on the Status screen is definitely different than the one under the battery.

Ignore the IMEI under the battery it's just a sticker I think what @kabuk1 is saying is that it could be different because of a careless error during a repair. The IMEI that shows up on the device is the IMEI of the phone and the one you should care about. If that is the one that swappa says is blacklisted then you should take @440bro and @kabuk1 s advice and investigate further with the carrier or just contact the police.
Sucks if you got scammed, but if you bought it through swappa they're really helpful with whatever you need. I bought a phone from a seller who turned nonresponsive immediately after the paypal payment cleared and they guys at swappa were really helpful getting my money back...slightly different situation but there is hope!
Thanks everyone for the feedback.
Just weird the phone works perfect.

It could be blacklisted on a different carrier than the one you're using. Usually what happens is that if a phone is blacklisted by T-Mobile, you won't be able to use it on their network but if the phone is unlocked you could still use it on other GSM networks.
The phone is AT&T model and I am using it on AT&T
