Hello,
Those with root will need to take the following steps to get ad-hoc wifi tether mode working:
Obtain fw_bcm4329_ap.bin from an EVO dump (located in /etc/firmware)
Put in following location:/sdcard/android.tether/fw_bcm4329.bin
Enjoy! (hopefully)
After this install android-wifi-tether, latest from the dev site.
Can someone verify these steps work? I don't have an incred on me but the program should behave this way and load from sdcard.
Some people in the evo 4g forums have reported doing this:
adb shell
mkdir /sdcard/android.tether
cat /system/etc/firmware/fw_bcm4329_ap.bin > /sdcard/android.tether/fw_bcm4329.bin

Yes it works on the DI. I had no problems setting up and using the Wifi tethering.
pushed fw_bcm4329.bin to /sdcard/android.tether using adb
installed wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk, using adb.
Runs fine, laptop connected and accesses the net without any trouble.

Ya you have to have that file on the card from what I've heard.
I'm downloading it now.. will test in a min.
Find just the .bin file here.... already renamed

Great job! I am now tethering an ipad...
Awesome! Pretty much the only reason I NEED root.
Just so I understand this correct. I already have ROOT. Do i need to basically start over and get into ADB recovery, re-push the payload, re-root, and then upload the file from within the recovery?
edit- got it working. Nevermind
Thanks Seth - worked like a charm here. Man, I missed root.
Thanks it worked for me
I have the one click root on my computer. I was able to root stock 2.1 but not Froyo. I cant seem to get a normal Update.zip to reinstall to root it. Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you
Have you used adb before? Its easy. Just need to get the sdk dev kit. Then go here.

I sent smokestack a PM to see if he can help me out on how to do it. I just flashed the phone with Froyo following the directions here. I wasnt to sure about what I was doing but I did everything and it all eventually worked out well, with a couple scares lol. Im new to the rooting scene. I mean Im pretty savy when it comes to certain stuff and I was easy to install beta leaks and builds with BlackBerrys for 3 years. Im new to Android since the Captivate came out, so Im slowly trying to learn the tricks of the trade

The instructions seemed clear as day to me. Put the phone in debug mode, use adb to push the files, execute a shell script, use sqlite3 to allow side loading, change permissions on the files you pushed, and reboot.

I think what they are looking for is where to put the files that they download. I know in the rooting tread, it was missing. I also think some people do it differently, so it may help just to let them know how you find it easiest to navigate to them, etc.
Personally, I take the files that were downloaded and extract them all. Then make sure you have downloaded the android SDK program and put it on the root of your computers hard drive such as drive C:. Then add those files you downloaded to the "Tools" file within sdk.
To navigate to them with command prompt, it would look like: cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Then run the commands as listed in the tread.
Hope this helps.
Perhaps this is not the answer you are looking for, but if you are comfortable flashing roms, flash Cognition 2.2 (its already rooted).
Good luck

I'm running W7 and am having issues with adb. I'm a noob to android but I'm learning. Anyway, I tried your suggestion of adding the files to the tools directory but when I enter "su" the system returns "su: not found". Any help?
Moved to Q&A.
Firstly, pls notice this script is only for the phone which have got root.
Before below steps, pls make sure your usb mode is not as mass storage.you need choose none or first item when you plug your usb cable in.
Thx for all the XDA guys hard work and especially DG ,Shawnbuck,Fenny and anyone else that contribute a lot for XDA and us.
2011/7/4 Update for restoring script of stock Webtopmod 4.1.83
2011/5/4 updating:
Adding the restore script for restoring to stock version of V4.1.57 webtop files in order to update to 4.1.83.
After succeed updating and got root access, you can run webtopmod V8 again to get the webtop cracked.
pls notice in order to backup the stock webtop version ,you need answer "N" when prompt "Have your cracked ago with old mod files?" for your first run script after updating.
Then your stock webtop file will be backed up in /sdcard/webtopmodbackup(thx for terrypchan's uploading files)
Background:
I found some guys complained lose webtop mod after root for 4.1.57(now 4.1.83).
Actually, what we need is just to replace some files that we use for stock version.
But the original script will not work for 4.1.57.
In order to make some new guys crack webtopmod easily , i update the script to make it useful again.
I also add Chinese font support on webtop. Now you can visit Chinese webside at webtop. The Chinese will displayed correctly.(If some errors happend regarding font fix,it doesn't matter of your crack.Maybe it's because your system is English version)
I don't need your bears for it.Just press "thank" butten or leave a feedback, which is enough for me.
V8 will be stable version for you and could not be updated so far.
Steps:
1. download the file
2. extract and press install.bat as usual
3. run script in rooted Atrix before you do any action regarding deodex or theme changing
3. look at the screen and answer the question accordingly(If it's your first time to run the script in this system version---noticed i mean version not the phone, you need put "N" when prompting "Have your cracked ago with old mod files?" to backup your stock files
4. after reboot, you webtop back again.
[option]5. If you want to deodex or any theme changing, then do it.
[option]6. Run the script V8 again after you do deodex or theme changing, this time you don't need input "N" when prompting "Have your cracked ago with old mod files?"
Remark:
1. webtopmodbackup.zip is the script that return webtopmod files to stock 4.1.26 version for updating to 4.1.57
2. restorewebtopmodv4.157 is the script that return webtopmod files to stock 4.1.57 version for updating to 4.1.83
3.webtopmod1.1updatedV8 can be run under any rooted Atrix to active the webtop mod
4. You'd better to run V8 to get webtop before you do deodex or any theme modification like gingleblue which will replace your webtop files with deodex and V8 cannot backup your stock files automatically
Version Introduction:
1.V8 (instead of V7)is fixed for Bell version.--updated on 4/18--I missed one sentence in scripts of V7.Thanks for Becart's correction. All the users(at&t and bell version) can use this version for webtopmod
1.V6 is compatible with the updated 4.1.57 mod files done by Fenny. You can updated from your old mod files or use it to crack your webtopmod directly.
Updated History below:
4/23 Now adding script of going back stock mod files(4.1.26.Pls notice it's different from 4.1.57 files and cannot use for updating to 1.8.3).Any one can download WebtopModBackup.zip and run uninstall.bat to make the files go back to stock version. You need notice i didn't test it but you can try and if any error, let me know.
(Update V8):
Fix script for Bell version. Thanks Becart's correction.
(Update V6):
Now reinclude the Fenny's file and update a little script. It works with Fenny's updated 4.1.57 Mod files now.Thx for his job and updated. You can find details throughthis link .
(Update V5):
Sorry .Made a mistake,i didn't notice Fenny's file format,it cannot be used for this script directly.V5 went off line. Sorry for the inconvinience. You can find V6 above. It should be workable.
V5 Version is compatible with the updated 4.1.57 mod files done by Fenny. Thx for Fenny's quick updated for 4.1.57 mod files.
Thx for Fenny's mod files again.
Then follow above steps to update.
Pls notice you need answer if you have crack the mod files ago in order to keep you stock files in SDCARD otherwise it will be overwritten when you run the V5 script.
(Update V4):
Now it can be used for any version of atrix including Bell.
(Update V3):
Donot need input command by manually any more. But you need keep phone screen on and allow SU when the script run.
(update V2) :
Filename of webtopmod.sh changed from WebtopMod.sh to webtopmod.sh since many person ignor the capitalization.
pls notice the last command need use filename exact same as webtopmod.sh now.all the letter is lowercase
Backup:
You can find the link for root:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013931
The 3 crack files are from Fenny's thread. you can find it through below link.

hi guys, so as the title states, i'm new to the droid scene and i have a streak 7. i have been reading for a few days now and want to root my streak. i am unsure about how to do this, i have seen gingerbreak and superoneclick. based on the fact that i dont know crap, which would you guys recommend? i have some other issues that concern me. maybe some of those fixed would be a good start?
issues:
1. i cant seem to connect my streak to my pc, running windows vista
2. i have no idea what all these acronyms mean?
3. i dont know what ROM to use, hell i dont know what a good ROM is
4. i cant connect my streak and my iphone via wifi
maybe some one can pint me to a basic, newb users guide would be good also. if some one is willing to help me, i'd appreciate it! sorry if this is the wrong spot
hello and welcome
1) did you install the dell drivers?
2) which acronyms are you referring to?
3) rom flavor depends on your needs... streakdroid is awesome but has bluetooth issues...on the flip side......is is overclockable. Im using custom 2.2 ...I need bluetooth sadly and can't sacrifice it for an overclockable kernel.
4)you need to modify the wpa supplicant file in order to tether via adhoc ( device to device )
Steps on how are in the forum.im typing via my ds7 ....otherwise id look it up for you. Its easy to find though.
Hope that helps!!!

Thanks for your reply. Here is what I found:
1. The drivers I found won't work with vista but I was directed to another method I hope works
2. All the "apk, rom, wpa" stuff like that. I mean I figured out a rom is what you use as a front end of sorts
3. I don't need overclocking, don't need speed at all as it's just going in my truck as an audio source, gps, video player, Internet thing.
4. I'll use your post to search this method out. Might need some help. I'm assuming I need to have the devise rooted first?
On a rooting note, what's the best, easiest method for a newb such as myself? I am on 2.2.2 and it's a t-mobile streak 7.
Again thanks for your help.
With 2.2.2 use gingerbreak. Its one button and your rooted.

Thank you. Seems as I'll be home later tonight so I'll be able to try and at least root the streak tonight. I hope it goes well.
ok so i rooted my streak 7 tonight. wasnt so bad i used gingerbreak.
now i need to modify the supplicant file in order to tether my iphone to my streak via wifi. i found all the info and the files, but i dont know how to "flash the zip in recovery" i read through some 16 pages and still cant figure it out. can any one point me to a step by step on how to apply the patch? or just write it out step by step? i am getting the hang of this stuff but i dont know enough and dont want to mess up my streak and not be able to use it all via wifi.
thank you again guys, you are a big help to a newb
ok i think i figured out how to do it:
1: changed zip file name to update.zip
2. moved to sd card
3. opened up clockwork recovery
4. ran rom up date of said zip file
5. asked to make back up
6. rebooted in recovery mode
7. dont know if it worked??
8. still wont see my iphone using mywi for tethering

You don't need to do any of that....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970219
You are rooted. All you have to do is use any file explorer which allows writing to root and copy this file to /system/ bin (back up your old one by renaming it to wpa_supplicant.old first. Restart wifi by going into settings and uncheck / recheck the box. You can now tether
The file is a zip. Extract the wpa_supplicant file from it and copy......not the whole zip itself...just the extracted file

Wow and I thought about copying the files. But I kept reading about "running" a patch, so I thought I had to let the script do something. Thank you very much for your link! I will try it hopefully tonight when I get home from working.
ok i am trying what you posted pyraxiate, but i cant seems to rename the files? i have tried both es file explorer and android file explorer.
ok i dont think my root went through. i re-read that the gingerbreak has to be on the devise and i had it on the sd card. problem is i cant get the gingerbreak apk to the eternal memory of the devise. my computer is only 32 bit and the adb files wont work on 32 bit, only 64 bit. so it seems i am stuck until i find a computer with an OS other than vista! damn it, unless some one has solution guess i am stuck unrooted for now
Do yourself a favor and use the super1click via tether to a laptop. Its easy. Install the drivers they give. Also I bought root explorer. Well worth it!
Also you can use the xp32 bit driver. It worked for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939921
That's how I did mine
If you have the gingerbreak.apk on the SD card use a file manager and install it. Then open in in the app drawer and click root. The device will reboot if it worked. Might take a few minutes and look like it froze.

Thing is I emailed it to myself and it still saved it to the sd card part, even though I removed my sd card?? I did the gingerbreak and it did reboot, I also did the clockwork recovery. I still don't know if it worked? Seems as though I try and rename the wpa files and I'm not allowed, does this mean that it isn't rooted?

I know es file explorer wont work for root. You need a root file explorer. Also, it would be a good idea to download a rom ( either streakdroid or custom 2.2.2), put it on the internal storage, and try booting into cwr to flash it. You boot cwr by powering the streak off first. Hold volume up in and push / hold power. You will get a recovery boot menu. From there choose update from zip ( this is where cwr is) and cwr should boot. From there follow guides to wipe data / cache / delvik and then go to install a file from zip. Choose the rom zip ...sit back...and relax as it flashes to a fully rooted rom
Hope that helps!!
Is it possible to unroot after using the 1 Click Root? I'm coming from a rooted Droid Eris and I remember the first few people who rooted their Erises had lots of problems and I just wanna make sure we can go back and re-root if a better root process comes along later on...

Yes, but you'd have to do it manually at this point.
You'd delete busybox and su, uninstall superuser.apk, and there may be a symlink you need to undo, but I think the latest one-click cleans that up. I'd have to go back and check.
And any bloat you froze needs to be unfrozen, or bloat removed needs to be restored.
Okay, first version of this tool, be kind and let me know if there are any problems with it.
Also: NO GUARANTEES. If it does something that breaks your phone, I am not liable. Use at your own risk. Etc., etc.

UPDATE 9/1/2011: version 1.03
I'm trying the one touch unroot and keep getting an error about the /sdcard/d3unroot folder missing files.
I extracted all of the APKs from your link to my /sdcard/d3unroot directory, but for some reason one touch unroot will not work.
The root worked great
same error here...
Get that error as well
Same here.
Why does it even need that to un-root @ that point?
I'm getting the same error.
Is it really a one-click method?
I'm a dummy so I think I'm gonna wait for some clarity.
Thanks for doing this, man!
Fully re-written and should un-root and restore /system/app for both v5.5.959 and v5.6.890. Enjoy!

This program is for Windows only and can:
root your device (most Motorola Gingerbread devices)
unroot your device
restore your /system/app, even if you deleted files
And a bit more, such as un-freezing apps if you un-root just like Titanium Backup can.
So how do I do this. Is it the same as the one click root meaning unzip the file and put my phone into charging mode and let it do its thing
Sent from my DROID3 using XDA App

Pretty much -- this is an all-in-one. It'll tell you where to download files and where to put them when you begin.
I guess I'm just retarded I can't get this to work. I give up. Looks like I'm gonna have to get VZ to mail me a new D3

Why can't you? More than willing to help, but have to tell me what the problem is. And bear in mind that I put out a new version less than 2 hours ago that fixes a LOT (it's a full rewrite).
ok ive downloaded the file to my computer.
Keep getting the error for the Restore data not being in the right place. I've extracted the files to the right spot (I think)
is the restore folder supposed to be located in the Root Tools folder, and then all the apk's placed that Restore folder?

Basically, yes.
I'll use your desktop as an example, so if you have:
Desktop\New Folder\Pete's Motorola Root Tools.exe
Then you'll want to extract all the files for the /system/app fix to:
Desktop\New Folder\restore
So that you have:
Desktop\New Folder\restore\AccountAndSyncSettings.apk
Desktop\New Folder\restore\AccountAndSyncSettings.odex
Desktop\New Folder\restore\AdminFeedNotifier.apk
etc.
This assumes you are using my new version 1.03.

Ok thank you, I'll give this a shot again.
EDIT: I have it set up as:
Desktop/PetesMotorolaRootTools_v1.03/restore/(all the apk's)
And I'm still getting the:
ERROR: /restore/ backup doesn't exist or is incomplete! etc etc
