hi guys, so as the title states, i'm new to the droid scene and i have a streak 7. i have been reading for a few days now and want to root my streak. i am unsure about how to do this, i have seen gingerbreak and superoneclick. based on the fact that i dont know crap, which would you guys recommend? i have some other issues that concern me. maybe some of those fixed would be a good start?
issues:
1. i cant seem to connect my streak to my pc, running windows vista
2. i have no idea what all these acronyms mean?
3. i dont know what ROM to use, hell i dont know what a good ROM is
4. i cant connect my streak and my iphone via wifi
maybe some one can pint me to a basic, newb users guide would be good also. if some one is willing to help me, i'd appreciate it! sorry if this is the wrong spot
hello and welcome
1) did you install the dell drivers?
2) which acronyms are you referring to?
3) rom flavor depends on your needs... streakdroid is awesome but has bluetooth issues...on the flip side......is is overclockable. Im using custom 2.2 ...I need bluetooth sadly and can't sacrifice it for an overclockable kernel.
4)you need to modify the wpa supplicant file in order to tether via adhoc ( device to device )
Steps on how are in the forum.im typing via my ds7 ....otherwise id look it up for you. Its easy to find though.
Hope that helps!!!

Thanks for your reply. Here is what I found:
1. The drivers I found won't work with vista but I was directed to another method I hope works
2. All the "apk, rom, wpa" stuff like that. I mean I figured out a rom is what you use as a front end of sorts
3. I don't need overclocking, don't need speed at all as it's just going in my truck as an audio source, gps, video player, Internet thing.
4. I'll use your post to search this method out. Might need some help. I'm assuming I need to have the devise rooted first?
On a rooting note, what's the best, easiest method for a newb such as myself? I am on 2.2.2 and it's a t-mobile streak 7.
Again thanks for your help.
With 2.2.2 use gingerbreak. Its one button and your rooted.

Does it require connecting to a pc? Or can I download gingerbreak and install it on an sd card? Better yet do you know of a link to a tutorial or thread? I'm on my phone now and won't be around a computer till late Sunday.

Thank you, I shall try that and hopefully not brick my streak.
As far as installing a ROM, any other ideas, advice, links? I like to read as much as possible to be well informed before I do anything.

Thank you. Seems as I'll be home later tonight so I'll be able to try and at least root the streak tonight. I hope it goes well.
ok so i rooted my streak 7 tonight. wasnt so bad i used gingerbreak.
now i need to modify the supplicant file in order to tether my iphone to my streak via wifi. i found all the info and the files, but i dont know how to "flash the zip in recovery" i read through some 16 pages and still cant figure it out. can any one point me to a step by step on how to apply the patch? or just write it out step by step? i am getting the hang of this stuff but i dont know enough and dont want to mess up my streak and not be able to use it all via wifi.
thank you again guys, you are a big help to a newb
ok i think i figured out how to do it:
1: changed zip file name to update.zip
2. moved to sd card
3. opened up clockwork recovery
4. ran rom up date of said zip file
5. asked to make back up
6. rebooted in recovery mode
7. dont know if it worked??
8. still wont see my iphone using mywi for tethering
again any help would be great guys. thanks

You don't need to do any of that....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970219
You are rooted. All you have to do is use any file explorer which allows writing to root and copy this file to /system/ bin (back up your old one by renaming it to wpa_supplicant.old first. Restart wifi by going into settings and uncheck / recheck the box. You can now tether
The file is a zip. Extract the wpa_supplicant file from it and copy......not the whole zip itself...just the extracted file

Wow and I thought about copying the files. But I kept reading about "running" a patch, so I thought I had to let the script do something. Thank you very much for your link! I will try it hopefully tonight when I get home from working.
ok i am trying what you posted pyraxiate, but i cant seems to rename the files? i have tried both es file explorer and android file explorer.
ok i dont think my root went through. i re-read that the gingerbreak has to be on the devise and i had it on the sd card. problem is i cant get the gingerbreak apk to the eternal memory of the devise. my computer is only 32 bit and the adb files wont work on 32 bit, only 64 bit. so it seems i am stuck until i find a computer with an OS other than vista! damn it, unless some one has solution guess i am stuck unrooted for now
Do yourself a favor and use the super1click via tether to a laptop. Its easy. Install the drivers they give. Also I bought root explorer. Well worth it!
Also you can use the xp32 bit driver. It worked for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939921
That's how I did mine
If you have the gingerbreak.apk on the SD card use a file manager and install it. Then open in in the app drawer and click root. The device will reboot if it worked. Might take a few minutes and look like it froze.

Thing is I emailed it to myself and it still saved it to the sd card part, even though I removed my sd card?? I did the gingerbreak and it did reboot, I also did the clockwork recovery. I still don't know if it worked? Seems as though I try and rename the wpa files and I'm not allowed, does this mean that it isn't rooted?

I know es file explorer wont work for root. You need a root file explorer. Also, it would be a good idea to download a rom ( either streakdroid or custom 2.2.2), put it on the internal storage, and try booting into cwr to flash it. You boot cwr by powering the streak off first. Hold volume up in and push / hold power. You will get a recovery boot menu. From there choose update from zip ( this is where cwr is) and cwr should boot. From there follow guides to wipe data / cache / delvik and then go to install a file from zip. Choose the rom zip ...sit back...and relax as it flashes to a fully rooted rom
Hope that helps!!

okay im trying to root my phone i already downloaded the driver to sync to my cpu and the downloaded the rooting file change it to update and copied it to my phone. i downloaded the sdk file and extracted it to my c drive as c:/androidsdk. i did everting it ask me to opened up the command promt and entered cd first changedirectory space the entered c:/androidsdk/tools as it tells me to but says this the program cant find the path specified..can anyone tell me wat im doin wrong and y its not bein recognized thanks in advanced
Re-check your path. When I installed it looked like this:
c:\android-sdk_r06-windows\android-sdk-windows\tools
YMMV
PS ... note they are backslashes not forward slashed in the path
Q: still having a problem rooting my captivate
i switched it up to the backlash and it still saying no path detected...it wont enen let me root my phone saying file is not there i downloaded the root file extract it to my c drive n renamed it update i got windows 7 i then copied it to my phone...downloaded the android sdk file extracted it to my c drive.opened up the command and put in the codes and it tells me it cant find the path..am i downloading the file wrong extracting it to the wrong file??? plz help
I do it the lazy way, take the tools folder and copy it directly to C:
So it would be,
cd C:\tools
adb blah blah blah
That's an easier path to remember.

That works too ...
My point was it's clear the OP has the path wrong. Actually finding the tools folder in Windows Explorer is obviously the first step.
Also, anything he is trying to push via ADB has to be in the tools folder as well if memory serves.
Of course there is an easier way to root ...

Don't know what to tell you. Following the instructions in the post I linked to above is the easiest way I know of how to root, and has worked every time I've tried it.
If you can get into download mode, then maybe try re-flashing to stock with Odin One Click and see if that helps any. Or re-install your drivers.
So, you cant even copy and paste from your pc to phone via usb mass storage?
Use your phone, go to dev section, find unleash the beast or super rooter extreme, download either and place the update.zip on the root of your sd card using My Files or whatever. Reboot your phone into recovery and reinstall packages. There, youre rooted. Dont forget to delete the update.zip if you plan to use CWM.

You can use Sideload Wonder Machine or the Android SDK to sideload.
With the Android SDK, you just put whatever apk you want to load into the 'tools' folder and use the adb install filename.apk command.
Like i said, check the dev section for SRE or unleash the beast. One update.zip that does it all, root, bloatware removal, sideloading, etc.

What startngate said. Here in the captivate forum there is android developement, do a search for super rooter or unleash the beast. All the steps to run it are there. Works really well if you just want a stock rom with root and some other goodies. If you want custom roms i encourage you to read through the threads before doing anything.

I use this one to keep it simple.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
And I think it has the update.zip file in it... so if that application doesn't work.. you can just install the update.zip into your sdcard - reboot into recovery and install update.zip from there.
You don't need the SDK - just need to make sure your phone can be seen by your computer. I've used it on both an XP and Win7 64-bit machine at home and it works great.
To "side-load" applications - you can use the wonder machine... or place the *.apk file on your SDCard and use MyFiles or your favorite file explorer to browse to it and it should install just fine.
I'm testing my phone out with a stock ROM - and I'm rooted/sideload avail and even have a lagfix installed with all of my apps installed in under 15-20 minutes... it is a pretty simple process to root this thing nowdays
I have searched a lot, spent time trying to figure everything out.
I have Hero that I am trying to make BA for my little bro. I have the evo now. Rooted and tethering. Not much else I need to mess with on it. Fast enough for me. But my old hero is now rooted and has the app to tether. I can't figure out how the heck to over clock it. It is slow and I want to kick it up a couple notches for him.
I have searched and all the codes that you guys use at the top throw the searches off, or maybe I am searching for the wrong thing.
Any links to other threads would be great. That way when someone else searches just over clocking like I did it will come to this thread and then link to the useful threads.
Thanks in advanced.
I see you are rooted already, is the phone running a stock rom? If so think about installing [ROM] cyanogenMod 6.1 stable (<<<<search). Then you flash a [Kernel] [GPL] DecaFuct [2.6.29.6] (<<<<search) and install a app called OverClock Widget, it is easier to use than the other one you can use called SetCPU. Thats pretty much it, somebody may chime in that can put a few links up but I am on my phone right now so I cant.
DecaFuct Max 768Mhz Kernel
DecaFyct Max 698Mhz Kernel
Decad3nce's Kernel OP Thread
These are JayBob's CM6.2 ROM Downloads.
Okay, so I need to back up my phone? Can I use the app on the android market MyBackup by Rerwarre, LLC? Then I need to download the files you linked me to in this thread? And then what?
Okay. I am sure you are all tired of hearing from me. But I am going to flash a ROM that has a over clock on it. I have a question tho. When I download the files. It unzips them. By that I mean I can open the folder and explore all of the files. Does this make it impossible to load that ROM? Thanks for your quick responses in advanced.
You dont want the file unzipped. Leave it zipped and put it on the root of SD card, that means just on the SD card, not in another file. Then reboot into recovery by powering phone off, then hold down the power button and the home button at the same time, keep them down until recovery comes on. If a white page comes up instead of recovery that says clear storage, pull battery and try again. Once in recovery you should see a few options. Nandroid, select this by clicking track ball while highlighted, this will back up your current system. After that choose install zip from SD card, then select the rom you loaded on SD card. After is says done, choose reboot system now. Then find Gapps 12-18-2010, I think those are the latest ones. Put them on root of SD like you did the rom and reboot into recovery the same way, choose the install zip from SD and select the Gapp file. Then reboot system amd you will set phone up with google like you did when it was new. You can then install one of the kernels linked for you, I recommend the 768 one, download OverClock Widget from the market and set it to 748, if your phone reboots for no reason lower that to 729, 710, wherever it becomes stable for you.
Okay, I did nandroid, I cleared everything, and I loaded the zip'd file ( I was trying to say earlier it is my mac's default action to un zip the file when it downloads. So I re compressed it. This might be attributing to my later problems) ANd then I rebooted. And it looks and behaves exactly the same as before.
Any pointers or ideas why it did this?

Since you re compressed it, it may need to be resigned before flashing. I could be wrong though
What does resigned mean?
ANybody have any idea why my ROMS arent loading at all?
Not quite sure if this will work on mac, you may need to find a XP pc to do this from. Here is a link to a zip signer though, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=805766&highlight=zip+signer
Another thought...
Can you download the rom using the phone, then move file from download folder to root of SD card, using a file manager such as Astro or even better E Strongs File Explorer? I have read where some members have rooted, installed roms, kernels, theme, with no PC at all.
awesome idea on doing it from my phone. I didn't know it was a Mac problem. I can just run boot camp and boot up my mac with windows OS and try it on that. Thanks again.
Okay, i am trying to do it all from the phone. But the file is too large for the phones memory. And I can't figure out how to download righto the SD card. Any pointers here?

I just go to settings then cyanogenmod settings then application settings & it will let you choose
The factory ROM trying to get the first custom one loaded.
use the xda app and navigate to the thread that has the rom you want to install. from there click the link of the rom and it will go to SD card in a file called downloads. after completed plug phone into PC/mac and move that file/rom to root of SD card. Then reboot recovery and flash, done. There are literally 100+ threads on installing a rom, search, read, learn. What recovery do you have installed?
Okay downloading it to my Windows 7 bootcamp worked like a charm. I did the red dawn ROM. Isn't that one already over clocked?

Simple Thread to show how to root 1.5.7 & 1.8.3 using GingerBreak
Requirements: SD Card(real sd card not internal)
WARNING: THIS WILL DELETE YOUR INTERAL SD-CARD, BACKUP FIRST!!!
First if you don't have adb you need to get it. Easiest way is by downloading SuperOneClick. DO NOT run superoneclick, you only want adb from it.
Next download GingerBreak.apk made by Chainfire, it can be found here
Next launch from command prompt move to where adb is c:/path/to/adb/ and then run the following command
adb install /path/to/apk/GingerBreak.apk
It will install it, next on your phone in your app menu browse to and click on GingerBreak. Click root. Your phone will reboot and you will have root .
I have personally tested on a stock 1.5.7 and it works!
I have not personally tested on 1.83, but it has been confirmed by many. Same procedure applies
If you want side loading use Gladenable.
So to follow up.
Code:
1. Get ADB
2. adb install GingerBreak.apk
3. Run GingerBreak
4. Root
5. If needed run Gladenable to enable sideloading if needed.
6. Done!
All credit goes to the GingerBreak team & Chainfire, all did was apply there work.
Or you could do this, Thanks kennethpen .

Also, the OP doesn't mention needing an SD card installed but the other thread mentioned needing one. So do I need an sd card in?

Yes, you need an SD card (not the internal one). As best I've been able to tell so far, vold can only be exploited with an external SD card mounted.
Because of the risk of formatting the card, its recommended you either back yours up first, or use some old 2GB junker. You can get these in the impulse buy isle at your local grocery store.

Using root explorer goto /system/lib/libdme_main and add .bak to the end of it. You will keep bluetooth and no more update. Make sure you do NOT mess with anything else!

Revolt - LTE
I'm not sure if this is related, but I noticed that after I flashed Revolt 1.3, I never see the "LTE" symbol in my notification bar. I'm in an LTE area, so I know it's available--does that mean my phone isn't running LTE anymore or is the symbol just not showing up on this ROM? I apologize in advance if this is a ridiculously misguided question--I'm new here and learning as I go.
By the way, mtmichaelson--I said this before and I'll say it again--awesome ROM! Thanks again for your hard work.

So, right now it is a .so file. Do I just add .bak to it, or change it from .so to .bak?
(Just want to be extra sure.)
Also,I would like to root my phone. I found a way that someone rooted theirs with their 2.2.2. Do you think I should root first, then change the file so it doesn't update? Or does it matter?
by the way, Here is the root I found(sorry it's a bit long):
"How to root your OTA Updated Revo:
This method requires you to downgrade your phone back to the V4 stock version. As of now, there seems to be no root process for the V6 update. This method has worked for me and I am also on a custom ROM that has been said to have some, if not most of the V6 updates included without the bloatware.
Step One:
- Be sure to get the following files:
---- LG VZW_United_WHQL_v1.2.0.exe
---- LGAndroidDriver_Ver_1.0_All.exe
---- LGNPST_Store_Lab-1.zip
---- VS910.dll (required to use LGNPST_Store_Lab-1.zip)
---- VS910ZV4_04.S4_04.P58008.R5.user.tot
---- RevoToolkit-1.0.apk (This is untested by me but supposed to provide an easier method to install CWM mod vs the ADB method)
---- SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse (Includes the needed ADB program)
---- rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin (The exploit needed to root revo, not necessarily found with SuperOneCLick)
---- RevoltRom1.3.zip (This is optional, but recommended to speed up your revo and also to comply with the original topic of this thread. It 'seems' to stop the OTA from 'trying' the update since it includes updated features. NOTE that I said 'seems'... Other things I did may be the actual result I haven't seen the OTA try to install...
Ok, so to start, you will want to be sure that you have the drivers on your computer (I'm using windows 7 x64), so that is what this method has proven to work on by me.
Be sure to install:
- LG VZW_United_WHQL_v1.2.0.exe
- LGAndroidDriver_Ver_1.0_All.exe
Both may not be required, but I have both installed and things worked.
Then you will need to install:
- LGNPST_Store_Lab-1.zip
- VS910.dll (This is just copied into the folder LGNPST/Models. My install put the LGNPST program in C:\LG Electronics, not c:\Program Files (x68)... )
- You will run the LGNPST program, select the VS910.dll via Menu: File --> Select DLL.
- Then, in the bottom right of the LGNPST program, select BIN File (folder icon) to load the 'bin'.
--- This will require you to enter *.* in order to find the .tot file. Don't worry, this .tot file is what you need in the LGNPST Program.
- Once loaded and your phone is connected and recognized (Phone must be in 'Internet USB Mode'), hit the Start Button. This will begin the process of restoring your phone back to V4.
After that has completed, which takes a while, you will then need the SuperClick program to root.
- Copy, or verify, the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin file is located in the Exploits folder where you extraced SuperOneClick.
- Run SuperOneClick, Select the exploit pull down (which defaults to 'auto') and select the rageagainstthecage option.
- Press the Root button and let it do its thing.
--- If it fails, this is what I had to do.. Reboot your phone. While it is rebooting, have the SuperOneClick program ready and waiting for you to hit Root again. As soon as the LG Logo becomes animated, hit Root and let it try again (While it is rebooting). This seemed to get the read/write options to work, where failed. This possibly is part of the update that is sticking around to stop you from rooting. So, try a few times. If/when succeeded, move on to the next steps if you wish to have some of the update 'fixes' without the update and a faster custom ROM...
To install a ROM, you need to have CWM installed.
Two methods to doing so seem to exist:
- The method I used was at this link: [RELEASE][6-14-2011] CWM Ported to the Revolution 4G! - xda-developers
Follow that and you should have a backup original image and the new image to get CWM to work to install custom ROMs
- The OTHER method, which is UNTESTED by me, is to use a simple tool called RevoToolKit, which is and APK file that runs directly on your phone. If it works, which others seem to say it does, this would be the most simple form of installing CWM to your phone. Be aware that this app is small, but uses a downloader to install CWM, so you want to make sure you have a good internet connection or data connection...
After that, you will want to follow the directions for CWM (ClockWorkMod) at this link:
- [Rom][8-17-11]Revolt Rom 1.3 - xda-developers
After all that, you should have a rooted Revo AFTER you managed to do the update.
I included links to some instructions in order to shorten up this post and not 'copy' someone else's methods and be sure that you can give the credit to them. The only credit I deserve for this is a complete step-by-step, in one place procedure to get you back or to root your Revo if you did the update.
In time, I am sure that there will be a simpler way to root the OTA Update, but until then, this is working for me and hope that this helps clear up some issues for others that find it tough to get back to root after the OTA Update."
It then has the file links, but I cannot post them since I am a newb.
Thanks again!
I don't see a way for you to change the file from .so to .so.bak without having root as far a rooting you only have to downgrade if your phone its v6 if out is running v4 all you need to do is root it

Is there a way to do this without buying root explorer? I have bloat freezer so is there anything I can just freeze?
Thank You
*EDIT* just bought root explorer for $.99 through Amazon Appstore for those who still need it.
I'm on V4 and rooted back from V6 but it does not let me rename due to it being a read only file? sooo how do I add the bak? opened it with root explorer and it requested superuser privileges and I ok'ed it but when I go to /system/lib/libdme_main.so and try to rename it, it won't let me.

On the top right of root explorer is a "Mount R/W" button. Click that and it should let you make changes to the system.
Hope it helps

Thanks a bunch . That worked! I had pushed it at the system level. Didn't pay attention that I had to do it at the folder I'm in.

I have made a small utility that will install CWR on the LG thrill. Untested on the optimus 3D....
Thanks to designgears for outlining the original procedure in this tread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257588
WARNING:
Your warranty is now void.
I take no responsibility for bricked, dead, or unresponsive phones. If you are uncomfortable using this tool, then DON'T. Furthermore, I created this utility for my phone, and decided to share it with the community.
This utility was coded in c# in a windows 7 environment. I can only speak to this working on windows 7. If it works on XP, great; but I only tested it on my windows 7 system. Confirmed working in XP by: gentzleon
Before you begin:
Phone must be rooted!!! Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1251663
Must have an SD card in the phone.(This is used for the storage of the recovery backup)
Drivers MUST be installed! ( Direct Link: Here)
Instructions:
1). Plug phone into computer via USB cable.
2). Turn on USB Debugging mode
3). Launch 1click_CRW with admin privilages (right click->run as Administrator)
4). Enjoy
Notice
Because people have different computer speeds and the fact I wrote this in 10 minutes, there is a pause between each command. Just click 'ok' when the popup messages says waiting.....Its fool proof.
ALSO: I did not put any error checking in it because I did not feel the need. I created this for fun and decided to share it.
If you see an error from ADB like no devices found, make sure your drivers are installed and restart the computer.

Thanks. Sorry I didn't get to it as I said. That's why I love this place. If I drop something, someone else picks it up.

Sure no prob at all.
This installed cwr just fine but when i try to make a backup or install a new rom it says error cannot mount sd card does anyone know y this would happen
Freaking sweet. I was hoping to find something easier to do this with that having to go through the other method to flash GB Roms. That is what this is for right?
All those having problems installing, make sure all your permissions to /data are checked-(all 9) if not you will not be able to install recovery...
To set permissions you must;
Have root explorer or the free app ES file explorer.
---Navigate to /data and press and hold
---Select properties
---you will see at the bottome where it says permissions an option to change
--- Select change and make sure all are checked.,
---click out, reboot phone and it should all work..
There have been instances where the folder will change back permissions or not save the new permissions so just perform it again... Enjoy the 1 click CWM Now If this could be included in the script it will make it fool proof.....

I think I may change this app and create it in a windows form...I will have a button that follows the same procedure as it does now, and a second button to fix permissions..However, should I have it apply the permission change to the entire /data? Seems unsafe to me, but I'm paranoid.
Also, work has been long, and my wife and I are in the final process of buying a new house. So that is why I haven't been on much.
Figured it out thanks for this tool

I can confirm this works on the p920 (or at least a p925 flashed over to a P920). I've done it on two phones.
