Tried flashing an I9000 rom over a previous I9000 rom and now the phone doesn't boot up all the way. It gets past the AT&T World phone and Samsung splash screens but then goes to a blank screen in which the capacitive buttons are responsive and the phone will vibrate once, accompanied by 2 faster vibrations.
I've tried all the different button holds to get into download mode but none of them seem to work. ADB doesn't work either so Odin3 isn't an option atm.
Is my only option to buy a dongle to force download mode?
yes, you need to buy/make a jig. once you get your phone into download mode, you need to flash the stock rom with the button fixes, as you should have done before flashing anything else.
Read the sticky and try the other method before getting a jig... might work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
If all else fails you can make a cheap jig with 3 resistors and no soldering for under $1 from radio shack... search the captivate forum for 3 resistor jig
you said the 3 button doesn't work, but did you try pulling the battery, SIM and micro SD out, then plug into computer, then hold volume UP and Down and THEN insert the battery while connected to PC and pressing both volume buttons, should go to download in a second. at least mines did when none of the 3 button combination worked

Yah, forgot about the whole flashing back to stock thing since I hadn't used the thing for a couple weeks now. I'd only been using an Incredible for different roms. I think I'll just make a jig later.

Is there any reason this wouldn't work? I tried it on my captivate and can't get it in download mode.
EDIT: Is it possible at all to boot into cwm and flash a nandroid backup?

Yes because you have no 3button combo. Your only bet would be to use a jig to get into download mode. And no I would not even try to do a nandroid backup because those can cause the same issue unless you are running the same Kernel as the backup.
Ok, have made the jig and am now in download mode. One problem though, even though I have the drivers installed for Windows X64, it is being read as an unknown device. So still no luck with Odin.
Any ideas?

Try win 32 driver
Or google samsung captivate
Go to web page for device
Near bottom is a link to download manual, click, should be a link for software, click, download drivers from there.
You may have top direct your computer to the drivers, when you get the unknown device click direct computer to where the drivers are

That's what I did and still nothing. I'll just keep trying it and let you know if I vet it working.
I had the same issue and still no luck. In download mode and even pointing it to drivers doesnt work. Like its not recognizing it as a android device even though its in download mode
I have videos for ODIN...Check my sig...
Ok, after about 1000 tries and getting ready to lose hope, I got it to work by holding it a different way. I think it was just a USB cord problem in the end. Thanks everyone for your help. Unfortunately, my other phone, Samsung Focus, took an unfortunate fall preceeding this fix making this win feel kind of insignificant.
So I flashed the initial kernel file using ODIN3 to my captivate running Continuum __ and I'm getting stuck at the Galaxy S CyanogenMod screen. I was wondering if there is any way to fix this other than purchasing the resistors and making a jig...
Did you try flashing back to stock?

Continuum is a Froyo ROM, right? Were you trying to pair a gingerbread kernel with a Froyo ROM?

First off, what you described isnt even close to a brick.
You need to tell us a couple things. Can you get into download mode? have you tried to flash back to stock?
well the problem is that i cant get into download mode or boot into recovery
Anyway to "adb reboot download"?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
nope cause i cant get the usb debugging to work since it wont boot at all
Been there once...what I did was...removed the battery ..and out my phone in Download mode...flashed back to Stock 2.1 and did everything again
You said you cant put it in DL mode? were your 3 button combo working when U flashed initial kernel?
Its definitely not bricked, try putting it into DL mode and flash to stock..
1. remove the usb cable, battery, sdcard, SIM.
2. wait 10 seconds, then insert the USB cable.
3. press and hold the 3 button combo while you insert the battery
4. continue to hold until phone's screen goes black twice and release power button.
5. timing is critical, it may not work the first time. Keep going until you see the COM port is connected properly.
well when i was flashing initial kernel i just did adb download and the flashed it and when i follow your steps it just puts me back to boot screen and i stay there

so did you read the instructions where it says to not use commands like "adb reboot download" or "adb reboot recovery"? and to make sure you had a working three button recovery before you attempted installation of the ROM?

now you're boned until you get a jig. which is why it's very important to read the FAQ/instructions.
k thanks for all the help
build a jig yourself or buy one online. it will get you into the download mode:

After looking for quite a few hours on google and xda the only solution thats shows up is to use a jtag and quite frankly that scares the pants off me
here is what happened
-i upgraded the device to froyo then did the super one click root in order to root
-after that i installed the modified recovery to turn off the signature check
-after doing that i flashed clockwork mod renamed update.zip through recovery
-after that i flashed the ICS beta but i could not get the main zip to work through recovery the only other zip i had on my sd card was the kernel so i flashed that and it worked, in clockworkmod 5.0 it wiped everything on the phone so i reloaded the 2 zips i flashed the rom there and it rebooted. (this is out of order from the thread so i know this is what causes the next problem.
now when ICS boots up i get an encryption unsuccessful screen saying i need a factory reset, only option given is reboot now. can't bypass the screen, can't access via adb (driver install fails on windows too), cant get into download mode, and can't get into recovery.
how screwed am i
device is
Samsung captivate
-build number 1009
You need Gingerbread bootloaders.
And since you cant get into download mode... You probably need a USB Jig.
Good news is that you see something at startup. I doubt you are totally screwed then.
Second the jig as an option. It has quite the track record on this forum as making the captivate almost un-brickable.
What have you tried as far as getting your phone into download mode? There are sometimes multiple ways (Vol-up + Vol-down while plugging in USB without battery, sim, or microsd installed is how I always seem to get it working). Here is a list:
http://samsungcaptivate.wikia.com/wiki/Putting_the_Phone_into_Download_Mode
To my knowledge, none of that information is dated... but there are those here that know far more about it than I ever will.
none of those methods worked, it just stinks if it would have been any other rom i would have been fine i think but since i can't do anything in user space and everything i do takes me to the ICS android screen i cant do anything.
also for the record i am a noob to samsung devices but i have been doing this stuff to HTC devices for years

Im assuming not and thats what caused the brick. Either that or CWM5 doesnt like froyo BL's. Either way.

Did you try this method to get into download mode?
1. Turn off phone, remove sim, battery, sd
2. hold both volume buttons, keep holding for remainder of instructions
3. insert usb
4. insert battery
This has instantly granted download mode on every captivate i've ever tried.

The team hacksung project might be compatible, but the straight port says in the op that you need to flash kf1 first, which included bootloaders.
You aren't hard bricked and your device is recoverable.
If you are still on the froyo bootloaders, try unplugging the usb cable, removing the battery, sim and sd cards, hold vol up+vol down (don't hold power), and plug the usb cable back in. It should take you to download mode.
If your phone responds to adb while it's booting, you can just issue a quick 'adb reboot download' or 'adb reboot recovery' to get it to boot into either without the button combos.
If either of those don't work, you can try forcing it with a usb jig (just a 301k resistance over pins 4 and 5 of the microusb port). Build a jig, take the battery out, plug the jig in, make sure not to touch the jig while it's in or you'll change the resistance and won't work, put the battery back in and it should kick your phone into download mode. Once you're there, simply remove the jig and plug the usb cable back in.
Sometimes the download mode graphic won't show up even if you are actually in download mode. If the phone looks like it hung, try connecting it to Odin anyway and see if it recognizes it.
Edit: forgot to mention, try using adb from linux (virtual machine or livecd will work too). You shouldn't have to mess with drivers and it's worth a shot.

Were you able to get this working again? If so, how? My Captivate with Build 11 of ICS that had been running perfectly for a week got the message you saw regarding encryption.
I couldn't reset, I tried one click back to stock, and now I just get messages saying can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1.
Unbricking Cappy
Are you able to go to CWM using the three button combo? Try pulling out the battery, reinsert, Hold vol-up + vol-down
and hit power button. Let me know whether CWM menu is appearing or not
All I have to say is wow, not one of those things are true
UCKF1 was the first GB leak for the Captivate, not official Froyo wtf :S
you also don't just connect and power on?!

Hey,
Could you tell us more about how it was resolved?
I'm having the same issue here.
I did the Odin one click to bring my phone back to full stock after having issues. i then downloaded ROM manager from the market, since i am running 2.1 eclair i just flashed it via the app. now to upgrade to a new rom, i need to enter download mode. I thought you could always hold in the power buttons and plug in the usb cable, but that isnt working. this CWM version doesnt have a rebbot recovery option in advanced either. really need download mode, any experts got a tip or two..
You may want to check out the "Captivate Connection Issues" thread. That should get you to download or recovery mode.
Also, it's probably best to let go of Rom Manager - it's not very useful on the Captivate.
now i am at
phone--/!\--PC
and my computer isnt recognizing the phone, as well as Odin is not either...
I'd say to keep trying, and try Heimdall if you haven't already. The phone--/!\--pc screen should work as a download mode.

So, I was trying to update from a 4.1 rom to a 4.2 one. After a bit of fumbling and a few status 7's, I managed to get stuck with a broken operating system and a status 0 on every rom I tried to install. So I decided to flash to stock with Heimdall using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238093. Now, when I tried rebooting my phone, I'm faced with a password prompt. As soon as it gets past the AT&T World phone splash screen. Regardless of what key combo I press.
So, any suggestions? I'm open to anything short of hitting it real hard with a hammer.

I get the feeling that the methods you are using to attempt to get into download mode simply aren't working. Depending on your device, what boot loaders you're running, and how annoying your device feels like being that day the methods vary. The most foolproof way is to buy or make a jig which will put you into download mode every time. But the most recent way I've done is do a battery pull. Providing you don't have power button issues that causes the phone to turn on on its own replace the battery. Then plug your USB cable into your computer and while holding down both volume buttons insert the USB cable into your phone. That should boot you immediately into download mode.

Yeah. That prompt confused the hell out of me. Thanks for the help! I'm still having a bit of trouble, though. I can't seem to find any files still hosted with CWM on it, and the JB roms won't flash straight through the stock recovery console. I tried a kernel too, but verification keeps failing on them. I'm assuming its the stock recovery that's causing trouble, but I can't find any files still hosted to fix that with.
