[Q] tap to move cursor failure - LG Optimus 2x

Hi
I've finally had my phone back from the workshop after a malfunctioning speaker.
So, I flashed Modaco's ROM from his online kitchen, and I deselected a few options, which I though I didn't need.
Now, my problem is, I can't tap on the sides to move the cursor anymore.
Which program is this function within? Is it the LG Home, LG keyboard, LG message app or something completely different.
I tried using another keyboard on stock ROM, this was no problem, so I guess the keyboard is not the reason, but what should I avoid removing in the next cooking of a ROM, if I want this function to work?
thanks in advance

oops double post as I got an error message first time - please ignore this

This feature works on my phone with MCR FR12 whilst composing an SMS or email in GMail
Goto Menu > Settings > Gesture and make sure you have "Text input field" ticked as this enables that option

I flashed the ROM again, including stock LG Home, messaging app and keyboard... works now, but still dunno which of these disables the tap function

Well it works on mine with stock rom, but lg home deactivated so we might rule that out

Yeah, I froze my LG Home when I was on stock as well. But when compiling the ROM in the Modaco kitchen, I deselected LG Home, so there was no trace of LG at all.
I also use a different messaging app as well, but could the feature be within the messaging app og keyboard, even though they aren't used. As long they are installed, the feature is there?
Considering baking a new ROM without the LG Home again, but with the messaging app and keyboard perhaps...
Haven't had the time to bake with some options, and flash, and then try another bake, and so on, yet... but will be the case someday, if someone doesn't beat me to it

the feature is in the LG keyboard.

Set Phonebook as default

Hi,
I am trying to set the Phonebook app as my default contacts manager but of course it does not offer that option.
Anyone know whether it is even possible yet or if there is another app that can replace the stock contact manager.
Im really just looking for an easier way of scrolling through my contacts
For example iContact burt edition for windows mobile
i wish i could just find phonebook, its no longer in the market. im assuming it was removed so they could start charging for it.

it's not listed with the featured apps on mine and checking with others on the #android chan, they dont have it either.
Thats odd, I am looking at it right now maybe its because I already have it installed on my phone or because google has damned me for the time being and hasnt allowed me to see paid apps!
the featured apps right now are
Wertago, wikitude, personal safety, imap, klondike, blackjack, brain genius, pro football live, ebay, picsay, shopsavy, telegraph, bluebrush, bonsai blast, myspace.
pm me the apk of it if you would!
I would love to have the phonebook apk back, if anyone could pm me as well.
Here's phonebook app.
Here you go, just rename it back to .apk and install.

dude, you FREAKIN rock !
thank you!
So it cant actually be set as default? maybe in future updates
I think it can not be set as default at this moment. I have searched for this answer a lot, but found nothing.
jus delete your orginal phonebook, back it up first, thats what i did
Where do you find the downloaded apk from the market?
I can't compare to Phonebook, because it's been so long since I've used that app. Acontacts (totally free) is the most full featured contact app on the market IMO, and allows you to set as default when you press the call button. Good call log which can be set default and very responsive dev, as well.
Another one I've recently tried is Easy Dial Pro (ya I know Pro usually means $, but it's free, also). I heard about it in a thread here. Not quite used to it yet, but it seems really good when I played around with it. The call log may be better than aContacts. Again, you can set Easy Dial and Easy Call Log as defaults.
Hope this helped.
When you press the call button it will come up with "Launch using Dialler/Phonebook" tick the "Always use this program for this function" tickbox and select Phonebook.
If that doesn't come up then you have the dialler set as default go into applications > manage applications and then click on dialler, press the clear defaults button.

Anytime you install a new application that can be set as default, you are always prompted for which option you would like until you default it in the checkbox. Last time I tried to clear stock dialer default (user error), there was no option (donut drc63) so I had to un/reinstall my dialer app to get the list back.

Can't enable alternate keyboards

Hi,
I've been trying to get an alternate keyboard working on my stock Gtab, but can't. I know that I can't enable it via settings, so I copied the APk to /system/app and rebooted, but still no luck.
I tried a bunch of different ones, and all don't work.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim
Got Ultra keyboard working on stock, kind of
Hi,
No one has responded, but I've been focussing on trying to get Ultra working.
Some things I tried:
- Install from market - No setting to enable it, long press doesn't cause input selection
- I found some comments that problem was because of stock TNT Settings.apk and SettingProvider.apk, so I found some Android apks, and replaced them. - I then got the enable in Settings, but still no input selection when long press on a text box
- I then moved the /data/app/com.binarybulge...apk file to /system/app, and rebooted - Then, in Settings, the enable was gone ...
- I accidentally pressed on Ultra in Myapps on the new market, and a screen with 3 buttons appeared, including a question mark/help button. I clicked on that, which brought up a help doc, and in there, there was a link to open the input selection! I clicked that, got the selection, and selected Ultra. After that, long press still doesn't bring up input selection, but Ultra pops up when I click on any text box,
So, at this point I can use Ultra, but only Ultra (no input selection on long press).
I'm about ready to go back to the TNT Settins apks, but if anyone has any idea why I can't get the log press to invoke input selection, PLEEASE, let me know. Maybe there's some other Android apk that's needed?
Jim
I would like to use the gingerbread or swiftkey keyboards but am having the same issue disabling the TnT keyboard so I can select an alternate.

People have probably not responded since already asked by others several times. Also, I think people are becoming shell shocked and a tad weary of what Viewsonic is actually doing with the device.

Hi,
Understandable ...
But, I've been continuing to work on it, and I think I'm close to a workable solution, at least for me.
If you look at my last post above, you'll note that I can use alternate keyboards now, but the long press thing on a text box doesn't work. I don't quite understand why yet, because that behavior seems like it's suppose to be embedded in Android, since maybe 1.6 or so.
Anyway, so I'm trying to write a small Android app that will cause the input method selection menu to pop up. I just got that working, but I've hacked a few things like the Settings/SettingsProvider apks earlier, so I want to go back and re-do things to see what works vs. doesn't work.
Once I get all that done, and it hopefully works, I'll post info and my app/apk.
Jim
P.S. Reminder: This messiness is apparently only with TNT/TNT lite, as the other NON-TNT firmware works "normally" (enable in Settings then long press in text box).
I am sure you already tried this but I will say it just in case
Did you tried going to "settings" - "language & keyboard" - find the keyboard your using and enable it by the checkbox on the right?
then you go to any text input box like the market search box and long press to get the "input method" option.

That doesn't work like that in stock TNT .
After install, you can't enable it in stock Settings. Also, even when I switched to vanilla Android Settings, which allowed enabling, long press on text box doesn't bring up input method selection.
Jim
Anyone come up with a solution? I still cannot use an alternate keyboard within TnTLite 3.0.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004
Long press isnt working with TnTlite 3.0. Look at the last item in the changelog.
1. Root it
2. Load Vegan ROM (comes with Android 2.3 keyboard)
3. After loading an alternate Keyboard (I like SwiftKey) & enabling in settings, select input method as you normally do in Android.
Hi,
I think that my small app is working, at least on my Gtab, but I'd like to get a couple of people to test it, and then if it's ok, I'll post it as an attachment.
It'll come as an apk, that you just install. When you click on the app, it causes the input selection menu to pop up.
If anyone is interested, pls pm me.

Thanks! I just sent you a pm w/the link. Please let me know how it works for you? I'm still new to Android and Android development, so "be gentle" . If this works OK for you all, I'll post the link in this thread.
Jim
Here is what I did.
installed the app you sent
installed free ultra keyboard
reboot the gtab
went to settings just to confirm that alternate keyboard entry does exist but can't be selected
Long pressing any text box brings pop-up with two entries 1. Edit text 2. Input method. Selecting input method just shows tnt keyboard entry and not the alternate ultra keyboard
So I would say it is not working out for me...or I am missing something...let me know if you want me to try something else
Oh...I just realized that your app might only work on stock UI and not on tnt. 2.0...is that the case?
Kibana,
I think there are a couple of things/problems that we're dealing with here, including some stuff that I don't understand 100%, but let me try...
My understanding is that the problems with keyboards is only with TNT or any TNT derivatives. Since you're on TNT lite, I'd expect your system to behave similar to mine, with respect to this.
First of all, not being able to enable (in your case) Ultra keyboard, in Settings. Actually, if your system works like mine, you can check the radiobutton, but it doesn't "stick". From searching, my understanding is that is because thy TNT Settings or SettingsProvider apks are missing something that is not missing from the standard Android Settings.
I know this for sure, because I found another Settings/SettingsProvider apk set, that does make the keyboard setting stick.
I don't know if that matters now on my system, because even after I switched back to the original apks, I can install new keyboards, even tho I can't check the button in Settings.
Second, I had seen info that when you install a keyboard, they got put into /data/app, but needed to be in /system/AOL, instead.
In my case, I did that (copied the keyboard apk from /data/app to /system/app), BUT, I am not 100% sure that is needed. The reason I say that is I can install (for example) the ultra apk now, and without moving files, if I click on InputPicker, I will get the popup that let's me choose a keyboard, including ultra.
Third, I think that I forgot to say: AFTER you install InputPicker.apk, you need to click on the InputPicker icon and this will force the input selection menu to popup.
In other words, anytime you want to select a keyboard, click on the icon. Once you select a keyboard, your choice should stick until you force a selection again.
So, did you click on the InputPicker apparently icon after the installation was done?
Sorry for the long post, but even for something so trivial, there's a lot of moving parts to this !
Jim
kibana,
I did another set of tests. This is with the original TNT Settings apk.
I installed two more keyboards from market (slideit and swiftkey).
As you have, they appear in Settings, but I can't enable them.
When I ran InputPicker, only the 2 original keyboards appeared, even after reboot.
Ok, then I copied the apks (com.dasur.slideit... and com.touchtype...) from /data/app to /system/app, and then rebooted.
Then I ran InputPicker, and VOILA, i GOT ALL KEYBOARDS.
So, to summarize, in your case, I think you need to copy the com.binarybulge... apk from /data/app to /system/app. Make sure the permissions are ok, rw-r--r--, then reboot.
If I'm understanding your post, you already get the popup when you long press in a text box, so you shouldn't need my InputPicker app.
I wrote the app because on my Gtab, running stock TNT, I don't get the popup when I long press.

Help! Widgetlocker and sms popup

So I've been spending the better part of an hour trying to convince widgetlocker to block sms popup but can't seem to figure out the proper system name. I have tried "SMS Popup", "android-smspopup", and "com.smspopup.*" any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sent from my I897 running something I decided to flash today.
Go to data/app and try to find it.
Sent from a phone controlling a computer controlling a different phone
why not just uninstall SMS popup or tell SMS popup not to try and unlock screen?
It doesn't unlock the screen. It pops up in front of widget locker instead of waiting for me to unlock it like it does by default. I tried the whole trying to figure it out through installed apps thing too. Even tried finding it before the names changed in running apps list. Not happening.

I'm also trying to figure this out... I love the customization for individual contacts that SMS Popup offers, and I'm not ready to lose that.... so if anyone can figure it out... haha.

I have never once said it unlocks the screen. And it never unlocks the phone on any setting. It does turn the screen on by default but I turned that off long ago. the problem is when I turn the screen on sms popup sits on top of the lockscreen with widgetlocker. Widgetlocker has an option but you need the actually system name such as "com.handcent.nextsms" to handcent. I just need that one little line of text to fix this. Just don't know what it is for sms popup.

All you had to do to get that line was navigate to /data/app with root explorer and find SMS popup.
net.everythingandroid.smspopup-1.apk
Its a liveable issue. It doesn't wake the screen at least but I know there has to be a way to figure it out. Its probably not even that hard but I don't know enough about programming or how android works to do so. I've been on vacation since the issue started and getting on a plane home now. Hopefully ill be able to figure it out with a better workspace blah.
Edit: either you posted that while I was typing or im blind. I actually tried that my device just showed smspopup.apk I thank you very much sir.

[Q] Keyboard disappeared

Hi, my first post although I've been reading these forums for a couple of years.
reason: The keyboard on my Optimus 4X HD just disappeared a few days ago, and I can only type with "Google voice typing". It doesn't even show up when I tap a text field and I can't switch to it.
In "Settings > Language & input" I can't switch to other input method and the settings are grayed out.
I would prefer not to reset the entire phone and lose everything stored in it if possible.
Is there some way to just repair the android installation or the LG keyboard app? I'm thinking there could just be some files missing or gone corrupt, but all suggestions are welcome.
It's one thing to reset android but all the apps that need reconfiguring and backing up/restoring all my files is not very tempting right now.
You can reset only the keyboard. Wipe cache in app settings. If that doesn't help, wipe data too.

Keyboard

Is there supposed to be a keyboard with this update? I see the apps in the watch there is no keyboard tho and it says none loaded after the version .
Thanks
Try Google keep for example, you have a micro or keyboard
You may need to select it in the settings.
The default one is a bit small to be that useful, I'm using Touchone Keyboard as a replacement and it's a lot easier.

Can try opening from Google play on computer or watch, for some reason opening on mobile says it's incompatible
I installed that KB but I can't seem to get it to work. I enabled it, what am I missing here??

took me a bit to work it out first time as well.
After it's installed, on the watch go to:
- Settings
- Personalisation
- Input methods
If it's not already showing at this point click on 'manage keyboards'
- Select TouchOne
You can disable the other keyboard if you want, should work now when you get a msg.
Tip, to send the msg when your on the keyboard hit the green tick symbol at the top, I didn't notice this the first time and was wondering why I couldn't send any messages.
Not sure if this is a bug with AW2.0 or the keyboard but sometimes when I go into the WA messages there is no reply function, generally i just let it close and then open it again in a few minutes.
Keyboard take a bit of getting use to but still much easier than the default one
Hope that helps.

I've done all that & it still doesn't work.
I get a text with message + & no KB shows at all when I try to reply.
