So as it stands right now, Sprint is getting the Nexus S 4G, HTC Evo 3D, and the Kyocera Echo. I'll be due for an upgrade in September. My birthday is in July, so I'll have enough money for a new device(turning 17). Now my question, when I get the money, should I keep it, and upgrade to a new phone in september, or spend it on a tablet? If I get a new phone, I'll start rooting my epic and messing around with it. If I get a tablet, which would probably be a Nook Color, I'll be rooting it and putting cm7 or honeycomb on it. In your opinions, what should I do?

I was in this same boat, I had $200-250 to spend and really was gonna settle for an EVO since at the time there wasnt anything rumored or announced from Sprint.
After researching EVO, Epic, etc, I came to the conclusion that even if I did upgrade my phone, I would have to renew my contract, deal with battery life, and stuff like that. I ended up stumbling upon the nook and its hacks/developments, and decided that was a better bet. Since I am home 90 percent of the time, and when I am out I need my phone to be charged, I decided the nook was better for my needs.
In fact, since getting the nook, the only time I need my phone anymore is for tethering on the go, and the once in a while phone call I get from time to time. I will say that it does make it harder to play on my phone when I cant have my nook around, thats about the only drawback.

Ok, thanks. Yeah, I want to get into rooting, but not with a phone I need to know is fully functioning. I know that if I rooted my epic, I wouldn't have faith in it to do what I need it to do. I think I'm going to get a nook, than I can still help out members of the epic community the way i always have. Still would like others opinions though!

i think you should try and root your phone and get into the custom rom world before thinking about getting a nook. the nook has a lot of hacking and if your new to the whole thing its different than a regular android device, ie using a sd card with CMR in lieu of internal CMR. rooting your phone does not make it less reliable, JUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. But other than that a nook is a great buy, i have no need for 3g cause i just tether w/ my phone. And once honeycomb aosp is released it will be even better

I've been reading up on how to hackify the nook color, I already know how to root my phone, and I think I can handle messing with the nook better than I can with the epic. I've seen to many people mess up trying to follow the directions for the epic, and if I had to go back to stock and restart, i'd only have my contacts. I'd rather buy a device to specifically hack with than hack with a device I bought to comunicate with. More opinions, please!

There is no need to have CWM on a SD card.. CWM internal works just fine ( I use it almost daily with Cm7) .
As for phone rooting... certainly, unless yummy use an untested rom, it is no more unstable than stock..

This really isn't an easy question to answer.
The two serve decidedly different functions. It's sort of like asking if you should get a motorcycle or a pickup truck.
For me, the answer is easy. Go with the nook and get the best free phone that my carrier will give me for re-upping. Of course, I do not have the need to do anything with my phone beyond making/receiving calls.
There's really no right or wrong answer. If you're okay with gettting a much more basic phone, you'll ABSOLUTELY LOVE the nook, especially after putting CM7 and Opera on it. I don't want to gush, but the nook is, far and away, the best deal going for a tab.
I can't imagine you regretting getting the nook.
Best of luck, zanderman!

Actually, lol what I said was if I get a nook, I'm going to keep my epic, and root the nook. If I upgrade to a nexus s 4g, evo 3d, or kyocera echo, I'll then root the epic. Thanks though, I think I'm gonna end up with a nook, cause I like my epic's keyboard, which none of sprints new phone have(other than the shift)

That's excellent!!!
When will you be getting your nook? It'd be nice to hear your afterthoughts about a week or two after you get/hack your nook.
Cheers,

We're not big believers in big cell phone bills, so the Nook is much better than any multi-hundred dollar phone IMO
We run on a couple of Virgin Mobile Optimus V phones on their $25/mo 300 min & unl data/text plans. I can't imagine paying over $100 a month for a pair of cellphones. Not worth that much to me. No matter how shiny.
I run my phone stock and the Nook rooted. Good combo IMO especially since the Nook is almost unbrickable.

Yeah, I lolled the first time I saw the 3 times wipe thing too. The nook community is a world apart from the epic community. I'm not sure if it's because the device is more accessible or what.
That being said, the epic is about as hard to brick as the nook, you can theoretically always odin back to stock if things go bad.
Also the epic is pretty ballin' even still. Any phone hardware you get in the near future is gonna involve some sort of tradeoff from the epic. I'd go for the nook.
Although my rooted epic complements my nook a lot . Wifi tether ftw. And it will even more when i get around to setting up bluetooth gps tether, etc.
I have been I long time iPhone user and I wanted a taste of Android so I bought a nook so I could root and give it a try.
Right now I use an iPhone 4 and a rooted nook running cm7 but more I use my nook the more I have thought about getting the Moto Atrix
you have an epic.... no need to upgrade your phone unless you get the kyocera to try to kill two birds with one stone. Other than the kyocera option, I'de definitely get a tablet... imo a cheap phone with hotspot and a tablet makes life great.

That's what imma doin. I will own a nook. Lol in the epic section they were telling me to get the Evo View 4G tablet coming to sprint with Gingerbread + the new sense for tablets. Thing is, its fast already, I have no desire to theme it, I don't need a new rom/kernel, and I actually use most of the "bloatware" that's on it. I don't have a reason to root, and I'm not gonna root just for the sake of rooting. That's one reason I'm choosing a nook.

so i have the infamous samsung moment. you wanna know what really sucks about it? i listened to grooveshark for 10 minutes today. 10 minutes! the battery was at 75% when i started. when i was done, it was at 50%! yes, ive flashed to stock, yes ive tried other roms, yes ive done it all. disabled JIT, had the barest rom ever, and i still cant get a good battery life. so im pretty much set on switching to a new phone. but i need to know what the downfalls of the hero are. is battery life horendous? does it get really hot when you leave it in your pocket? how functional are the 2.2 roms? how much can i optimize it? give me all the info possible, especially stuff about signal strength and battery life. and rooting too, how easy is that? it seems a little unnecassarily complicated on the moment... thanks
Skip the hero and get an epic or evo....or wait a few more weeks and see what else there is. Sprint has already forgotten about the hero.

There's a few 1-click methods for rooting your Hero, so not complicated at all. Also, Hero battery life is pretty decent. Mine lasts all day and then some with moderate use. Other people get some ridiculous battery life out of their Heros with a combination of Decad3nce's kernels and Collin's battery tweak.
CM6 2.2 is more than fully functional I would say. The only problem I've ever had with it was the camera freezing and having to reboot my phone, but with the latest themed CM6 Roms (I.E. Redglass, Extremely Blue, etc), I've yet to have the same problem.
The only time my phone ever got hot was running Wireless Tether and pushing constant data through it for a few hours +.
One of the moderators on the Hero forums (impaler, I believe) has a link in his signature to a website that has about 6 or 7 radios that are compatible with the Hero and the signal strength that you'll receive amongst the radios will depend on your location, but flash these at your own risk as they have the possibility to turn your Hero into a shiny paperweight.
the hero is a nice device. the 4g devices arent worth the premium. data will never be worth what they charge even WITHOUT the ten dollar upcharge on the terribly bulky epic or the over sized evo. no sense getting a 'flagship' device because they change constantly. soon we'll have dual core procs on these phones and even then, consumers wont be happy.
get the hero, my stock rooted is faster/more responsive than my friends stock evo

wow thats a good chunk of info. im pretty much set on getting one now. one more thing, it has to do with overclocking. i *could* overclock my moment to 1.06 ghz, but if i can kill this with 40 minutes of music, thats not gonna happen anytime soon. i know that many hero roms, by default, overclock to 700something, quite a bit up from the measily 560ish that is stock. with either a replacement battery or one of those battery hacks you mentioned (or both ), would it balance out the power needed to run the processor faster? and make it run for 8-10 hours while im at school all day? thanks for all the good feedback guys. now i just need to find someone selling one thats not too scuffed up

Your friend must have jacked up his evo because my wife has one and it blows my OC'ed hero out of the water (CM6.1). You especially notice the speed in the browser and the games that I download on it without permission.
I agree the $10 extra a month is hard to swallow. Just remember that 2 years is a long time to commit to an older phone.
Hero is a nice device. It is small and does not feel like a brick in your pocket. The battery life is not bad. I have not tried any battery tweaks, but with some minor tweaks, I can get anywhere between 18-24 hours on a full charge. The only time I have felt the phone get hot is while wireless tethering.
I got it new earlier this year and as time progressed, I was getting annoyed with some of it's shortcomings, due to the software provided by Sprint. It felt slow, could not utilize the SD card for apps and such. The last straw was when "The Powers" said they won't be giving the Hero any more Android updates...
So, I rooted it and put CM6 (stable). Since then, I have been feeling like a child with a whole new toy. It works amazing, plus no extra 4G surcharge... .
oh something else i thought of. i think the hero has multitouch, please confirm. does it also have flash player? if it doesnt have either, thats ok. the moment has neither

What the battery tweak does is clock your CPU based on certain variables. You can set it's max and minimum limits whilest the phone is running on battery/USB power/AC power. Also, you can change it so it reduces the max CPU usage when the battery is below a certain percentage, as to suck the most time out of your battery.
I have my tweak settings maxed out at 729 mhz for any given variable and a min 176 mhz. My phone lasts all day and then some, for sure. I woke up with it at 75% (put it in airplane mode for the night because I was too lazy to find the charger) and currently it's at 55% after 8 1/2 hours of moderate use.
Results may vary, of course.
edit: I carry around an extra charged battery just in case. There's a Taiwanese vendor on eBay selling 2 spare batters + a wall charger (charges your external batteries without needing your phone with the option of USB charging as well) -- all for $12 or something. Definitely worth it and I think there's a post in the accessories forum with the link to it. Not sure if it died by now or not.
Good luck!
thanks for all this info guys! im cant wait to be able to get one of these things for myself!!! the hard part is the ebay bidding. i already lost 2 auctions that i was aiming for, trying for another one tonight, then done for the day. anywhere else that i might look to get an unlocked hero besides craigslist? i wont buy off there, no way.
EDIT: i finally won a hero off ebay!!! i got it for $110. i think thats a pretty good deal! but i was thinking about the rooting process, and i like the idea of a one click root, but i need a little more info. does the one click root install a recovery also? if it doesnt, is it possible that ROM Manager works with the Hero, and i can install clockwork recovery? i really appreciate all your info guys. thanks a bunch

The unrevoked method really works, yes.
Personally, I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 on my girlfriend's Hero, but I'm not sure about the Recovery, after trying a few different rooting methods, the Recovery just appeared after rebooting, so I'm not sure which one did it.
The method I used to root my Hero is long outdated and was used for Android 1.5 Heros, so no help there.
About the /data backup on your Palm, I highly doubt it. Not natively compatible for sure.

Just start fresh on the hero. Put unrevoked on your hero(if you have firmware 2.27.651.5..... if it ends in .6 or .7 you will have to find the .5 somewhere and downgrade first, it's simple)
After using unrevoked, download Rom Manager from the market and flash clockworkmod recovery. Nandroid backup and then you can start flashing different ROMs.... I love the Cyanogenmod 2.2 builds....have fun!!!!!

yep, i read about the OTA updates to block the rooting. but take a look at this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=753910). this implies that you can root the .6 OTA. is that a typo, or legit? the wiki link above also says that .6 is rootable. i know how to downgrade if necessary, though. as far as the unrevoked rooting, i was right then! unrevoked then rom manager will do the trick? awesome thats way easy. and i know that i change recoveries within rom manager... i think im set guys! thanks alot for all your help. ill be sitting on that wiki link for a while. im gonna read all i can before my hero comes im super duper excited!!! and i will have fun!!! i plan on flashing CM6 anyhow

I got a Captivate for my gf and she loves it, but the stock OS pissed her off due to lagging and bloatware.
We installed Cognition 2.3b8 which was very easy and now she really loves it as her daily driver. All you do is put an update.zip for Clockwork on the root of SD. Reboot into oem recovery, reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork, then wipe data and flash Cognition. Couldn't be easier.
Honestly, if you can find a Nexus One for AT&T (if you have AT&T the T-mobile version will be Edge only!! You need an AT&T Nexus One) I think that's your best bet, but with a little bit of modding and care the Captivate is a great phone. My gf LOVES the giant screen and beautiful display.
That said, the more I learn about it the more pissed off I am with Samsung. Different revisions, ODIN, Kies, Download Mode, etc. Rooting this thing is way more complicated than it needs to be. I'm running a MT4G and SOOOO glad I didn't buy the Vibrant. Shudder...
The only problem I've ever had with my cappy is the GPS, which, after reading the GPS fixes thread has been absolutely perfect.
To me this is the perfect phone. Fast, reliable, pretty. I don't even want anything faster anymore. If phones peaked in speed right now and started focusing strictly on battery life (I get about 1.5-2 days right now, I'd like to get 3-5), I'd be perfectly happy with that.
Craig's List? Buyer beware!
Here is where I am at:
This phone is probably not the best choice if you are planning on giving it to your wife without a custom ROM. If you plan on giving it to you wife with a ROM it is a good choice regardless of what ROM you choose however it is better if you use one that is as close to stock as possible: cognition, perception, or Andromeda (1.00).

I've got several great phones off CL. Do your due diligence as a buyer and you'll be just fine.
If you can get it for a decent price, then go for it.
Here's a simple pro & con list:
Pros
-Super AMOLED screen makes pictures and videos gorgeous
-1 GHz Processor that can be overclocked to 1.28GHz (stable) and undervolted to improve battery performance
-The xda devs are constantly providing the Captivate support that Samsung has failed to give us.
-Did i mention the Super AMOLED screen? Yes, yes I did.
-Swype makes texting a lot more fun to type on the phone once you get past the 1-minute learning curve
Cons
-Developed by Samsung and so the customer support for the phone is terrible
(see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913045)
-The stock AT&T Rom is filled with bloatware that takes up space and attempts to get you to spend more money on AT&T services.
-AT&T has disabled the ability to sideload apps (install apps from outside of the market) on the stock ROM, and so you won't be able to install third-party apps if/when you come across them.
-No official 2.2 froyo release from Samsung, despite promises from them as well as AT&T to have it released by the end of 2010 (this is when the store rep told me to expect the update when i bought my phone. derp).
-Some GPS Issues
Conclusion based on my personal opinion.
Overall, I love this phone and I'm glad I chose it over the iPhone 4 due to the ridiculous customization available. However, if not for the xda devs creating amazing custom ROMs, I would have probably returned it for the original Jesus phone.
My advice? Get the phone, pick out a launcher from the market (LauncherPro, ADW Launcher, or for the minimalist: Zeam) and grab handcent while you're at it. Then give her the phone and she should be happy with it.
More advice? Sure. Root the phone, flash Cog 3.02 onto it with the firebird 2/Glitterball kernel and JK4 modem.
Sorry if this post seems a bit jumbled and scattered. I'm currently doing about 4 different things at once and posting from my Computer Class at the local community college haha
Dont' buy it. GPS problems, shutdown issues, and, based on the general lack of reliability so far, probably more issues to come as the phone ages. If it weren't for the beautiful display and the custom ROMs here on xda I'd have little good to say about my phone. Since you don't plan on modifications the screen is really all you'd get. Does that screen outweigh the hardware problems I've noted?

SuperOneClick -- The program is called "SuperOneClick". That is literally all it takes to gain root on a SGS phone. So, personally, I think rooting is not nearly as complicated as it could be!

Let me rephrase that. Custom ROMs are more complicated than they need to be. I've used SOC on my MT3G, works well. It's ODIN, Kies and manually flashing modems and kernels that annoys me. I've flashed radios and roms on my mt3g and I'm comfortable with fastboot and adb so I'm not a total noob. HTC just seems simpler to me, but maybe that's because I'm used to it.
The only beef I have had with this phone is the GPS issue. otherwise it's a great phone. Beautiful screen, sleek design and fast with a good ROM such as Cognition.
I've decided I'm either going to get her a Nokia N900 or an iPhone (some variation). I can't put a phone in her hands with such a gamble on the GPS (There's no guarantee the fix works and no way to identify which Captivates will work and won't work). Especially since this phone is purchased used and won't have a warranty on it.
I wish her sister would make up her mind about AT&T. If she decided to stay with AT&T I could just buy her something new. If she decided to leave AT&T, I could buy her a new Android device with another carrier.

I can tell you from experience, **** AT&T! T-mobile has buy one get one free for MT4G right now, I have no clue why on earth you would want to stay with AT&T.
Seriously, I have been with T-mobile for 5 years and I'm in love with their service. Every time I call I get an AMERICAN rep on the phone in 5 mins tops.

This is a very fair and accurate assessment.
Absolutely get this phone if you're comfortable rooting the phone and installing custom ROMs, launchers, etc. The phone will run markedly better than stock and will be a dream to use.
If you're not technically inclined, and need rely on $am$ung and AT$T for your firmware updates, get a different android phone. Updates are either never coming or will be over half a year behind and quite possibly bugged and broken even if you do get them.

I feel like I should mention that I'm now using Exists Suckerpunch kernel and it's... Well... Amazing. OC/UV support with speedmod's battery battery tweaks is pretty much the best thing ever. And exists (pretty cool guy, eh made my favorite kernel ever and doesn't afraid of anything) updates so often I barely have time to find and complain about any bugs that happen to slip past.
This phone is quite captivating indeed.

Me too. That said out of the box the Captivate is a very frustrating phone to use. The GPS is spotty and You won't have full access to it's super fast Gee Bees unless you install a custom ROM.
I ended up getting her an iPhone. I know guys, I know.
To be honest, I didn't feel comfortable giving her a phone with spotty GPS as this will be her primary GPS unit.
Reading the custom rod and GPS thread gave me no assurance that doing the fix and rooting with a custom rom would fix the issue.
I have enough problems dealing with my MyTouch 4g that you may see me on a Bionic or iPhone with Verizon anyway.
But thanks for the advice. I may root and mod her sisters Captivate to score points because I heard she has had for warranty replacements lol.

I've been keeping my eyes open for an iPhone4 for my gf as well for the same reasons you mentioned. There's also an AT&T iteration of the Evo coming soon. That might be a good device for her.
Phateless said:
Shudder...

My Captivate has never been very good. It has a bad AT&T update server thing, it randomly presses the search button for no reason, its laggy and the internet doesn't always work, even if I have a good signal. I'm looking for another android phone, but not a Samsung. I want to be able to sell this
Captivate that is 2.2 and rooted w/ Evo Black Bar mod. It is in fairly good condition and I've had it for 3 months. And using the money I sold it for, for another phone. Right now i'm really looking into the HTC Inspire 4g, but should I wait awhile longer to see if a better phone comes out soon. I've always liked the HTC Sense UI, so I'd want it to be an HTC phone.
Thanks!

if you like htc wait! the inspire is great, no doubt but in 2011 there should be a dualcore phone coming out from htc. there should also be one coming out from samsung not that you are interested.
it's unfortunate that the search button presses itself but the internet thing sounds like either a rom/modem problem or an att problem. have you tried andromeda or the latest cognition based on the rogers release? there may be reasons not to go with samsung but if your reasons are isolated to one broken phone maybe you should exchange it and give it second chance. what ever your decision thanks for not starting a flame war with bitter complaints that have no relevance to anything like others have.
If it were me, I would look into getting it replaced with another one and seeing if that alleaviates some of the issues you are having. If not then I'd say Atrix or infuse..just my 2c
go with the motorola razr you'll never look back
Not only in the wrong section but I would swear I have seen a thread just like this one before lol j/k I will be moving this to Q and A when I hit my pc. My thoughts are with MWC coming up In less then a week it is far to early to say for sure. I personly would go with the HTC, known good hardware and decent updates. Moto known for locked bootloaders and ok updates. Samsung well we all know this story lol good gardware, updates, what are those? lol

First off, I hope that everyone enjoys their NC in the way that they want to use it...it's a great eReader. For those that are a little adventurous, even if not very tech savy, all you have to do is research the internet and posts from other users and you too, can have a customized NC.
I picked up my NC in Feb and have never been disappointed with what it is capable of doing. It's like the eBook/tablet version of the HTC HD2 (IMHO).
Since Feb, I have learned how to root and load new ROM's in the emmc, set up dual-boot, side load .apk files, and edit the build.prop, systemui, system and framework files. Now mind you, I have never done any of this before so it has been a great learning experience and the NC has been the best device to work with.
My NC started life like most NC's did....with 1.0. From there it has handled the following changes (some of them more then once before the dual boot setup came out):
-Monster Root pack
-Auto nooter
-Sideloaded stock 1.1
-Ultimate Droid
-Honeycomb 3.0v4 from DeeperBlue
-CM7 nightlies from 16-32
-Nookiecomb
-Dual Boot setup
-CM 7.0
-Stock 1.2
-Phiremod 6.1
-Phiremod 6.2
-New Boot screen animation
-Several Dalingrin OC Kernel's (currently running 4/24/11 set at 1300mhz and benching 1124mhz).
-Several different themes, widgets, buttons and icons that are Honeycomb style
-Many apps: Netflix, Angry Birds Rio, Air Attack HD, Pocket Legends, Nova, Cordy, etc...
.
I'm still using Phiremod 6.2 which has been very stable even with the 4/24/11 OC Kernel. I have stock 1.2 in the dual-boot partition but it is just for show...I never use it.
None of the above would have ever been without the developers and the users and fans of both Andriod and the NC. All I did was some research and followed instructions...some very basic and some kinda technical. During all of the tinkering, loading, unloading, unzipping and installing, it still worked great at being an e-reader even though I was turning into a tablet.
Okay, so it doesn't have a camera, 3g or 4g, and there is no video capture capability, but ya know what...my HD2 has the things it's missing (well not 4g but I could care less) and I can tether to it wirelessly.
Okay, so it doesn't have a 10" screen or a full keyboard but my Netbook has that and this I can stuff in the pocket of a jacket or backpack without it weighing me down so really...am I missing anything for the price? In my opinion...not really.
My NookCOLOR's evolution
I've tried every flavour of NC ROM out there (many several times). With the help of Titanium Backup PRO, I've only lost a de minimus amount of data in going from ROM-to-ROM.
Longest usages: CM7 and HCv3 - about 3-4 weeks each.
Current: CM7 beta 3.1 & .32 kernel (OC anyone? - LOL)
The key take away for me has been this: NC is an UNBREAKABLE Beast of a machine that has taken a beating from me, with all my restlessness to be on the bleeding edge. It has never given in or called 'no mas.' And it lives to tell the tale to all those ill-informed haters out there.
Whatever happens (or doesn't happen) on May 24th from B&N, I don't care. NC is my first true love.
Good thread m8!
Right now, my major concerns are the one failed power cable (replaced at the store) and wearing out the SD slot!

Yes it has one thing missing: more processing/GPU power.
If the NC had a Tegra 2 (or Tegra 3), I would be in heaven.
As it is now, that's the only thing limiting me playing some of those super-demanding 3D games (as well as general performance of the device).
Unfortunately, I'm looking at all these powerful devices coming out like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was given away at Google I/O and while it has amazing performance etc, I just don't want that big of a device. I *LOVE* the size of the Nook Color. I LOVE my B&N case that makes it look nondescript (people have confused it multiple times for a book haha -- I love that).
Nook Color-sized tablet with a Tegra 2 (or 3) for under $299-$399 and I am so there!
I agree 100% ! I was lucky enough to be able to get an Asus Transformer but find myself picking up my Nook everyday, I come in and read every post in the various rom threads, trying to learn, confident that I won't brick my Nook
I started with stock, then rooted stock, then Nookie Froyo, the CM7 with nightlies. Tonight I went with Phiremod 6.2. I'm totally delighted, this toy
has provided me with countless hours of learning opportunities.. now to go read up on netflix

Yup...it's a Beast alright. I'm happy with the CM7/Phiremod but would change to HC if they can get more of the apps to work. I saw a post from someone that is working an SDK version but it's not a daily driver yet.
Unless B&N came out with a dual-core HC version of the NC then I'm happy with what I have. I doubt the news next week will even be close to that!
Thanks for the kudo.

I agree....it would be great to have a Tegra 2 or 3 to speed it up.
The Galaxy, Xoom and the other 10" Tabs out there are just too big. I wouldn't trade the size of the NC for the increase performance...1100+mhz is pretty good for me. I know that T-mobile has an 8" G-tab that is running a dual-core setup with HC. That, if anything would be something to look at but I like the fact that the NC is not linked to my mobile account so they can't charge me more for using it! Freedom is a wonderful thing

Yup. All these manufacturers making 3G-only tablets without a Wi-Fi version are moronic.
Even the CEO of Nvidia realizes this: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/15/nvidia-ceo-disappointed-by-android-tablet-sales-blames-pricing/
At this point I would never consider a 3G tablet, unless I can use it via my already-existing T-Mobile data connection without having to pay more. As soon as all the manufacturers start being smart and offering Wi-Fi-Only tablets, Honeycomb sales will take off.

Hi to all,
1. Awhile ago (in a distant galaxy, far away...) I rooted my Hero and moved over to CM7(a couple of times before getting it right...) During the process then, I failed to safeguard the nandroid backup, and no longer have that to fall back on...
2. Recently, I signed on with Hulu, and now want to use the Hero for watching videos and discovered... no way. I have spent a few days looking into this googling and going where it took me, and have spent today spending my time here looking. After searching and coming away with the realization that it isn't going to happen, I spent some time reading the first eight pages on the forum here to get familiar with the why's and why not's... but still have this little bit of hope that I have missed something... and I stumbled across the Zero Hero mod.
So, before I replace CM7 with Zero Hero, I thought I would check with folks who know way more than me....
1. Not having the original nandroid backup on file to use" in case of emergency" should I just leave well enough alone or use a recent nandroid backup of the currently working system (I am really unfamiliar with backing up in general...) to fall back on? I see no reason to ever need a backup of the original system that came with the Hero but... just checking!
2. If I utilize Zero Hero and replace CM7, will I be able to install Adobe Flash 10.1... or 10.2.. and use it to use on the web in general and Hulu specifically?
3. Am I trading of anything of consequence or importance by replacing CM7 with Zero Hero? (I am of the understanding at this point that CM7 is just not going to work with Flash Player. I also see that I will probably have to use another browser like Dolphin rather than the "stock" on the phone now with Zero Hero which is okay as far as I see things now.)
I will thank everyone now and again later (!!) for any answers, thoughts or opinions on any of the 3 questions together or any single question that they can help with! If your answer is to go ahead and buy a new phone... then I will start shopping!
Thanks a ton for your time and help,

A nandroid is just a snapshot of how everything is at that moment. So you can make a nandroid now and will always be able to go back to it for whatever reason.
Going between cm and sense is just a matter of preference. They both have benefits. Its just a matter of preference. You can install zero and nandroid, then go back to cm or switch between them as you wish.
Flash will never truly work on the hero. The sense roms have flash "lite" but flash won't fully work.
I was addicted to my hero and couldn't think of switching to a new phone. I finally did about a month ago and it really is amazing how much farther new phones are from the hero. I'd sadly recommend upgrading if it's within your means, but there's a few that are always here to help with the hero.

QUOTE=ajrty33;33993047]A nandroid is just a snapshot of how everything is at that moment. So you can make a nandroid now and will always be able to go back to it for whatever reason.

Thanks for your help. After all the effort so far on this, admitting this is deflating... your reply really confirms the slow dawning of this creeping around my head. It is time to retire the Hero I guess after all. :crying: It has been a faithful sidekick all these years.
Off I am to find a new phone, but what to do with all this info. I have acquired??? Guess I'll try to share it when I can...
Can I ask if you would recommend the phone you now have? Unless something else has come out since or is on the horizon??
Really, thanks, I do feel like I gave the Hero all I could :highfive: Closure, it does kind of feel good!

I switched to Verizon from cspire for several reasons. It's awesome having 4G. I got the s3. I'm loving it. The nexus 4 is coming out soon. I looked around for awhile before i decided. It was difficult going to a 4.8" from a 3.2" but it's nice to have more real estate. Its just up to you. Play with them at the store and you'll eventually find one you like.
