I just recieved a new captivate via a warranty issue. Welll this one came with froyo 2.2 already loaded. My last capitvate had serendipity 6.4 installed and had no problems with flashing that one. Since I go my new captivate I wanted to try flashing a new ROM of course. So I decided on continuum v4. Here is where my problem started I opened odin3 plugged the phone in while holding the volume buttons and sent it into download mode. then clicked start on odin and let it do its thing. it got where it said "removed" in the bottom part and "RESET" up in the green bar. after looking at my phone it was just a black screeen with the battery charging symbol loading. it would come up and then disappear and come back up. it kept doing this for a while. this is where i made the mistake....after waiting a while i unplugged the phone from the computer to see if it would even start or anything. Well of course it wont start at all. it gets stuck at the AT&T screen and wont go any further. I can't get it back into download mode and dont know what to do? is my phone a paperweight now? IF anyone can help, i would greatly appreciate it. Either via here or phone. I've got my sim card back in my backflip right now.
what do you guys think?
Use a jig... search on how to make it. Its decently simple and it costs 99 cents for resistors and a cut up usb cable

Can you get into recovery?
You could also buy a jig, but idk if im allowed to post the link so just pm me if you need it.
You could look up more than one way of getting into download mode. (there are several) Ill see if I can find them for you.

i try holding the volume buttons and plugging the phone in which worked to get into download mode just before i ****ed it up. it doesn't work anymore it just loads the battery gauge and flashes on and off....if i hold the volume buttons and hit the power button the at&t screeen just flashes on and off infinitely

Try this, I found it by googling
I've had success with this method to get into Download Mode:
1. Remove battery, SIM and microSD from phone (if you have one)
2. Wait at least 10 seconds with the phone in this state
3. Plug your phone into your computer (this step has always been optional for me)
4. Hold Volume Up/Down, don't let go!
5. While holding both volume keys, insert the battery

my question is what caused odin to fail on me? do i need a different version of odin to flash a captivate that came factory with froyo 2.2?

Lot of things could of happened, mainly because something might have happened to the wired connection between the pc and phone during the process. Im sorry I don't know the answer to the second question though. Maybe because the odin you were using was going back to stock "eclair" and not stock froyo?

Eclair, froyo, and now gingerbread same odin process.
Unless it's the one click version which I think only comes in eclair flavored.
Then the only other option I can think of for him is a jig.

Yes there are a few versions of odin but, either will work fine ... It's been reported that the one click will remove the 3 button fix in some phones with build numbers later than 1010, that info can be found under the battery btw, I've personally never had that problem, I flash and mod 3 captivates 1. Is a1010, 2. Are 1012's. All I've used is the one click version and they all still have 3 button combo.
There is an odin that flashes the 3 button combo while it flashes to stock, if you either never had it or have lost it ... Which I suggest you look for and use after you get jiggy with it so you'll have the combo for future use.
after making the jig with the resistors and everything, instead of going to download mode it just tries to turn the phone on and flashes the at&t screen on and off repeatedly....not sure what to try now
Scratch that. Was doing it barehanded and it would just try turning it on. I used some gloves and got it into download mode. Now I just need to plug it into my computer with odin alredy opened and once it recognizes and click start and let it do its thing right? And just don't unplug it right? What should I do if odin freezes up?

dont use ODIN one click. try AIO captivate toolbox 3.0. it uses heimdall which i have found to be much better for me
might have another problem now. i think the battery is dead on my phone. **** just doesn't want to work out for me. if i plug the phone in all i get is a battery icon that will flash on for a sec, then disappear. it will do this and only this forever. FML

Tried flashing an I9000 rom over a previous I9000 rom and now the phone doesn't boot up all the way. It gets past the AT&T World phone and Samsung splash screens but then goes to a blank screen in which the capacitive buttons are responsive and the phone will vibrate once, accompanied by 2 faster vibrations.
I've tried all the different button holds to get into download mode but none of them seem to work. ADB doesn't work either so Odin3 isn't an option atm.
Is my only option to buy a dongle to force download mode?
yes, you need to buy/make a jig. once you get your phone into download mode, you need to flash the stock rom with the button fixes, as you should have done before flashing anything else.
Read the sticky and try the other method before getting a jig... might work
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
If all else fails you can make a cheap jig with 3 resistors and no soldering for under $1 from radio shack... search the captivate forum for 3 resistor jig
you said the 3 button doesn't work, but did you try pulling the battery, SIM and micro SD out, then plug into computer, then hold volume UP and Down and THEN insert the battery while connected to PC and pressing both volume buttons, should go to download in a second. at least mines did when none of the 3 button combination worked

Yes because you have no 3button combo. Your only bet would be to use a jig to get into download mode. And no I would not even try to do a nandroid backup because those can cause the same issue unless you are running the same Kernel as the backup.
Ok, have made the jig and am now in download mode. One problem though, even though I have the drivers installed for Windows X64, it is being read as an unknown device. So still no luck with Odin.
Any ideas?

I have videos for ODIN...Check my sig...
Ok, after about 1000 tries and getting ready to lose hope, I got it to work by holding it a different way. I think it was just a USB cord problem in the end. Thanks everyone for your help. Unfortunately, my other phone, Samsung Focus, took an unfortunate fall preceeding this fix making this win feel kind of insignificant.
Ok, so I've recently gotten into the whole custom ROM and XDA stuff. It's quite good. I've gotten pretty smart with how to do things.
From trial and error, (nobody has outrightly said this) I need to flash back to stock, using ODIN, EVERY single time I want to change a ROM
Ok, so I flashed back to stock a few (4 or 5 times) and it worked fine, no problems
But now, while in download mode trying to flash back to stock ODIN locks up on me! So I have to unplug my phone...which bricks it, the "Phone-Computer" brick
I have to use a jig to get it back into download mode every time!
This has happened about 7 or 8 times without fail. It's at the point where ODIN crashed 2 out of 3 times, forcing me to use a homemade jig.
Any ideas?
I just got it into download mode on the first try using a jig (sooooooo unbelievably lucky, usually takes an hour or more) and it happened again
ODIN just gets to the DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET part and just stays there...I've left it sit for hours, hoping it will un-freeze. No luck
Its odin open before you plug in your phone?
Which odin are you using
What build us your phone
Us odin recognizing your device
CM7
Look behind your battery. To the left of one of the barcodes, there should be a build number, in the range 20XX. If it's 2010 or later, Odin 1-click won't work and you'll have to use a different version and manually specify the files to flash to your phone.
#1 you shouldnt need to flash stock inbetween roms now days, only if your phone isnt working right.
#2 i find there is a slight trick to download mode with NO JIG,
hold both vol
plug in usb
keep vol held for 2 seconds after screen comes on.
#3 for good odin flashing instructions follow the i896 stock rom instructions in my sig. but use your file unless you are rogers. instructions are all the same.
I make sure I open ODIN a few seconds before I plug my phone in. I am completely aware of that
My phone is build 1008. But my phone doesn't fit the normal problems other people have with 1008s. I used to be able to use 3-button combos and stuff.
I'm using Odin-3 one click
Odin does recognize my device. When I plug it in, the box turns yellow. And I can start the process of flashing to stock, but it cashes while the process is happening

A jig might work but more likely you'll need JTAG. Same thing happened to my phone a week ago and I ended up shipping it off to connexion2005. This is a high risk when changing bootloaders (2.3 -> 2.2/2.1).

Ok there's where the problem happened. That .tar only contains the sbl.bin (secondary bootloader) with no primary. So now you have a gingerbread primary and a froyo secondary resulting in a hard brick, you're only option now is jtag. One thing I found after bricking my phone a few times is you might want to try download mode again. Have Odin running with a full stock rom loaded. Try the battery trick again. Plug your phone into the usb cable, making sure the battery is removed. Hold both volume buttons and insert your battery. Wait a minute while holding the volume buttons. While holding the volume buttons, keep pulling the battery out and putting it back in. Even though nothing shows up on the phone screen, once Odin did pick up the phone on com and I was able to flash it.
worth a shot. I was ready to send my my phone in for jtag, but persisted and got lucky.
If you flashed Gingerbread bootloaders, then flashed 3 button fix, you hard bricked it. Only way to revive it is with jtag.
anybody know anyone has jtag service in Los Angeles?
The captivate is one if the most difficult phones to jtag, and flute that reason, The only place I know of that can jtag a captivate is
mobiletechvideos.com.

The three button fix is a zip file you flash from cwm that replaces one of your boot loaders, you didnt do this did you?try pulling your battery for a awhile have odin open on your pc,insert battery, hold both volume buttons, insert usb. Or try the one click unbrick

First make sure you have the right drivers in your PC. They will be/act different since your on gingerbread bootloaders now. Try the Nexus s drivers or download ask and start all over, it will download the drivers needed. You can also read somewhere in the forums about other drivers/apps that can get you the right drivers for your pc.
Also you can use a jig to get you in download mode.
YOU ARE NOT HARD Bricked at this point SINCE you do get to the att screen. IF you flash the 3 button fix now you will be permenently bricked and the phone will ONLY go e a black screen
IF you send your phone back to att is the state it is in now they MAY see that you flashed something and will charge you the full price of the new phone. You MAY get lucky if att or samsung don't check it but personally I wouldn't risk it. Buy a jig from mobiletech videos for the $8 and make sure you have the correct drivers on your PC. Then you will be able to fix it. Just keep trying, switching USB ports, try a NEW USB cable, keep trying.
I also didn't see it mentioned or missed it but did you turn phone off, plug the USB cord into the PC but now into the phone yet, hold down the volume + volume- buttons, THEN plug in USB cable to phone. And it should put you into download mode.

Its usually better that way.
So I recently made a thread how adb wasn't working and that evolved into not being able to get into download mode. Now after not being able to get into download mode for days, I'm still stuck on cm7 with no way of getting back to stock. 3-button recovery won't work, the only way to get into recovery is adb reboot recovery. No button and cable methods work to get phone into download mode as well as adb reboot download. I even recently tried http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lojU5bvGz3c which is a makeshift usb jig. I successfully made it but it would only turn the phone on. WTF. I'm afraid to buy a real usb jig from online because it most likely will cause the same thing. What is there to do? I'm completely lost. The phone works, the rom is okay I just cannot get back to stock and get rid of cm7. There are lots of issues I need to fix and cannot because of this. Any ideas?????
EDIT: Now I'm completely f'ed. I tried flashing cm7 instead of MIUI again to try once more if I would have better luck on just cm7, but during flash in cwm the phone turned off because the battery compartment was loose and now the phone boots up and goes into recovery shows some code then turns off again
(This post just in case anyone missed the reason in the edit)
Reason: EDIT: FIXED! Don't know what happened. Rearranged resistors and tried again and finally got it

I just went back to cm7/miui and it happened again. Nothing to get into download mode is working. What's wrong with cm7 on my phone?

What's your process to get CM7/Miui installed?
On a side note, ADB won't connect to your device unless you have the Nexus S drivers installed on you computer when CM7/Miui is installed
When I was last on cm7 adb reboot download doesn't work.
Drivers installed
Just sayin

yeah, i distinctly remember the first CM7 build threads that came up here saying that adb reboot download DOES NOT work, and you DO need working 3 buttons or a jig
not sure why that was removed from the threads
A jig should work
You might be coming into contact with the resistors (I can't watch that youtube video from work--firewalled--so I don't know what the setup looks like). Any contact with the them will make it not work. Try insulating them more with some heavy packing tape.
I cut up my mini-usb plug from my car charger (didn't need it), and peeled off all the plastic so I could easily touch the correct two pins with the jig when the hacked up mini-usb is plugged in. Works like a charm. Sometimes if you aren't touching them just right, or if one end of the pin is touching the wrong point the power will come on.
Try harder with the jig, I guarantee you it will work (and you shouldn't have to buy one--it's too easy to do yourself for less than $2 and about 5 minutes).
Good luck!
Just a thought. Are you installing GB boot loaders before flashing CM7/Miui? If so, the way to get into Recovery/Download mode changes. Recovery is vol+/power, Download is Vol-/power.
Just thought I'd toss that out there...just in case

Yeah, I know, but without all of the details. I figure it doesn't hurt to ask

Thanks a ton for the info on GB i've been beating my head trying to get my Mesmerize flashed to a rooted EH09. The vol down button was teh trick i needed.
No download Mode after I897 GB Bootloaders on CM7
Hi there, i've got a question. If i can't get into download mode using the 3 button combination nor the Vol- + Power nor the connect+press buttons+insert baterry trick , do i have chance to get into download mode using the YIG? Thank you
I've lost the 3combo after installing the GB bootloaders with CM7 but the Odin Connection was lost on the SBL, The phone is not even Powering on anymore
If your phone has no signs of life at all, then sadly you are hard bricked...
But it can be fixed through jtag or the unbrickable mod.
So is there hope?

So if i open the phone and do the unbrickable mod is there a chance to solve the problem? thank you in advance
Yes, according to those that have done jtag or the unbrickable mod, these methods are successful. To get better info though, I would recommend going to those specific threads.

I don't think you need jtag (but you can look into it). If your phone is able to at least power on, you should be able to use a Jig to get it into download mode. That is what I did with mine when all the options fail.
good luck.

If the phone doesn't show any signs of life (wich it wont if he failed on sbl) Jtag or Unbrickable Mod would be your 2 best bet. (Id use Unbrickable mode since it will protect you from future issues.)
Sorry haven't checked this thread in a while. My process for going to cm7/miui is flashing stock eclair through odin one click, then rooting and installing cwm. From there I just flash the latest nightly or whatever it is. Nothing I'm doing seems to be wrong
The problem is that I should be able to get into download mode without having to use a jig every single time. 3 button combo should work, but it doesn't when using cm7/miui for some reason
