[Q] unknown carrier - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a friend of mine recently bought me a galaxy tab over in afghanistan the issue that i'm have is I'm currently trying to do the clockworkmod and install a ROM to increase the performance of the tab, i have already rooted the tab but the problem im having is wiith trying to figure out what to select for the carrier, att, verizon, tmobile. I dont have a sim card inserted i am just using my wifi connection and on the back of the tab it does not specify any carrier, could someone please help me with this issue? Also what im eventually trying to install is the overcome ROM and i know i have to still install the ext4 kernel. Thanks for any help.

If your not going to make use of the carrier network, then you do not need to setup a carrier.
If your going to get a sim and insert it, then you will be using that network, and at that point you can check to see if the correct APN info was inserted from the sim.
So bottom line, if your do not have a sim, do not worry about it.

can I just select any carrier then when I go to do the clockworkmod? also thanks for your help.

Just chech and see what carrier supports the tab then select that carrier so if you ever do wanna get internet on it.
HTC EVO 003/ MISfit211 bad azz gb sense rom!

I know I have a sim card slot on the tab and that it's unlocked so can I tell by that or do I have to take it to verizon or AT&T and ask them? sorry for all the questions I just wanna Mod the tab asap.

What model is this tab (should be on the back) or better yet Dial on the pad *#1234#
Also Dial *#7465625# to check phone lock status (btw there is a spelling mistake by samsung there personlisaiob* instead of personlisation LOL)

If you have a SIM card slot, you have a GSM Tab, so you can definitely rule out Sprint, Verizon, and all the smaller CDMA carriers like US Cellular etc.
Assuming it is a US Tab, that leaves TMo or AT&T, but for most ROM flashing purposes, they can be considered identical (main difference is the supported radio bands).

gophone sim does not prompt sim unlock code

I have a weird issue, and was hoping that maybe someone could shed some light on what I am seeing.
I just got a used G1 on ebay, which I want to unlock. When I put an ATT GoPhone sim in and boot the phone, I am not prompted for a sim unlock code. It is not unlocked, I know the this as I do not connect to the ATT network at all and cannot modify any of the APN settings on the phone. I know that I need the prompt for sim unlock to actually unlock the phone. Fortunately, I just found an old international sim laying around and that one seems to trip the prompt for the sim unlock. My questions - why does the GoPhone sim not cause the phone to prompt me for an unlock code?
Thanks for your time.
Hmmm that is a good one. I used a normal att sim and it asked for the code, is it a older sim? Maybe one from the cingular days? To weird man.
the gophone sim is a new sim, just purchased and activated. I know the sim is okay, because I can use fine in another phone.
I have an unlock code on order. Hopefully, using my other sim to trigger the code request, I will be able to do the unlock. Hopefully, then, the gophone sim will work fine. I hope to post positive results back later.
thanks
Yea you can unlock it with any sim and switch to another and it will work. I know a few people on here use att gophone sims so you should be fine.
so I was able to sim-unlock the phone using a different sim.
I still have a real problem though - when I put the gophone sim in, I still find myself unable to connect. I even go to settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Network operators and try to manually select at&t. When I do, it says "registering on at&t" for a while and then says "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network". Again, I know this sim works - I have been using it in another phone.
What do you think I am doing wrong?
Thanks
It sounds like something is ****ed up with the sim, even though it works for the other phone. Do you have any friends with att sims? Something really sounds off here and if it isn't sim related then I don't know what it could be.
will try to find someone with an AT&T sim, but I don't know what the deal is. I even tried an international sim (that should roam on t-mobile here), but I could not get that to connect. I have tried putting in a tmboile sim and that seems to be the only thing I can to talk to a network
As a side note, no APNs show under settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Network>Access point names when I put non-tmobile sims in. When I add one, it still does not show up on the list.

There is a thread for ALL APN's in one of these dream forums. try that one, make sure you save the APN when you enter it to, dont just hit home or whatever.

[Q] How to use the phone in global mode (GSM)?

Ok, I feel like a n00b with this, but recently i bought a Droid Bionic on ebay, i got it now, but i want to use it for Telcel GSM, when i insert the sim card, i got the message that the sim card is from an unknown source, i never got that message before on another phone, i heard that the ICS update activates the global roaming on the Droid Bionic, but i don't know how to activate it, because of that message i cant use the phone on Telcel, if i change the GSM mode in *#*#4636#*#*, the phone FCs, but still no signal, what should i do to make it work in Mexico Telcel GSM? I need to make the same procedure like if i want it to work on US carriers or what? thank you.
Sure!
it works!, just follow the process and if you want you don't need to flash your phone with other rom. I got voice for Telcel, Movi and Iusa but not 3G data. I must say that i found something, i can't switch on 07 data call configuration on ##PROGRAM (##7764726) menu. If you need anything please tell me, maybe i can help you.

[Q] Wanting to use my Cappy with Straight Talk, help needed.

I'm trying to get set up with Straight talk and have two phones at my disposal(both wifi only currently). My current US Cellular HTC Hero S and my ATT Samsung Galaxy Captivate. I switched to the Hero S because my cappy has the SoD problem and no fixes worked for it, but I liked the cappy more because of all the support it saw here on XDA. My current problem is that the HTC Hero S(CDMA, but can also work on GSM) will only be accepted by Straight Talk for CDMA usage, US Cellular says I can't use GSM on it in the United States.
This has led to the decision to just use my cappy and deal with the SoDs until I can get around to buying a new galaxy. My questions are...
-What do I need to do to use it on Straight Talk? I read that I may need an unlock code from ATT to use Straight Talk's sim card, but Straight Talk sells both ATT and Tmobile cards and in a related XDA thread someone said If I go with the ATT sim card from Straight Talk I won't need that unlock code, it will just work. Is this correct?
-Will I need to edit my APN settings, and if so, how do I do that?
-I'll be starting off with stock software(one clicked back to stock), but I plan to go back to CM10.1 or whatever their newest version is after my sim card and prepaid card get here from ST. Will I have any problems with my Straight Talk service after rooting/romming?
Thanks!

1- I'm not so sure as I'm not american. That being said, unlocking is quite easy.
2- You might. Settings -> wireless & network -> Mobile network settings -> Access point names.
3- It doesn't change anything.
And you may need to try more than one APNs. It took a while for me to find one that works for my phone. If you still need help msg me.

[Q] Swapping ROMS on Straight Talk

I just got straight talk working on my ATT Note 3. (SMS, MMS, data, calls inbound and outbound working) But I heard that the SIM card is locked to that phone forever. And I heard that flashing a new ROM will make it where the card won't activate on the new ROM. Then i would have to spend the money and buy a new card Is this true? or is this with the IMEI only? also I can't seem to check my data usage on Straight Talk. When I text 611611 "usage" it force closes the phone. I'm thinking it could be the ROM so that's why I was discussing about how safe it is to swap ROMS on straight talk and if they can be re-activated after a ROM flash.

the regional unlock thread has the side affect of unlocking the sim as well"you wont need this except if you want to travel international ". And changing the rom has no affect on your already activated sim you just have to re-enter the apn settings into the new rom. And your sim chip is portable from one at&t phone to another as long as it will fit in the phones sim chip slot. So no you wont need a new sim card if you change roms. I really wouldn't advise you to change roms tho. If you don't know what you're doing you could brick your phone.

CDMA Workshop alternatives and can I get data on other carriers?

So, I've recently rooted and unlocked my device and I wanted to know if I can bring it to another carrier and still get data.? I'm using the LS991 Sprint version. I also wanted to know if there are any good CDMA Workshop alternatives; it's really expensive and I'm only gonna be using on a few devices.
Dfs
So you rooted (doesn't really matter with respect to carrier support) and you unlocked it (that's what matters with respect to carrier support) - so you put in a SIM card for the carrier you want, set the APN data (use Shortcut Master if needed, there's a version specifically modded for the LS991 directly available in my post HERE - might be a good idea to read that post as well since that's what I did myself.
Worse comes to worse if you have no luck because you unlocked your LS991, consider installing the global LS991 ROM (whether it's Lollipop ZV6 or Marshmallow ZV9 or ZVA - if you install ZVB you can never go back to anything prior so be aware of that) which will work much better for other carriers than using the unlock mod so many of us have done in the past.
Hindsight being what it is, if I knew about the global ROM when I got this G4 recently I wouldn't have mucked around with all the unlocking crap and the carrier partition at all for any reason because just installing the global ROM (or modifying build.prop to allow for global unlocked operation) is way more useful and less damaging to the phone. Modifying the build.prop isn't necessarily a cakewalk but, since someone else has already done it for others and posted the global ROM(s) for Lollipop and Marshmallow (as .img files you flash using the Send_Command.exe/dd method) it's really not a big thing anymore.
If you muck up flashing an .img file you can typically just use LGUP and a TOT file to get things working again so it's relatively safe overall, but if you muck up the unlock and trash the carrier partition content the phone will end up being pretty much useless unless you have that information safely backed up someplace (I'd say multiple backups in multiple locations, to be honest).
Anyway, if you truly want the phone to be capable of working on other carriers, my suggestion is go for the global ROM but that's just my own personal opinion on the matter. I'm using tabp0le's MellowMallow ZVB global ROM on my LS991 and T-Mobile LTE works just fine for me, for the record. It did take a little work - I wrote about how I got the full phone/data working in that post with Shortcut Master - but it does work.
Thanks for the help!
One last question, how did you get other carriers to let you activate the phone? Everytime I try they ask me imei then tell me my phone won't work on their network.
Well I've had service with T-Mobile in the past (not currently but will again soon), I have a bunch of T-Mobile microSIM cards because whenever they put the SIM card activation kits on sale for $.99 or sometimes even free (rare but it happens) I usually grab 3 at a time so I have 'em around for testing purposes. T-Mobile doesn't require me to provide any info to them, and even if I go to their website right now and input my IMEI number it'll say it's not recognized, etc but it's not relevant: it works, and that's what matters.
Most carriers don't actually require you to provide the IMEI for any reason as long as you can get one of their microSIM cards (or nanoSIM with adapter) and then get service without having to contact them. T-Mobile is somewhat unique in that process I suppose. With this SIM card I have (it's never been activated) I can go to their website and sign up for service right now and it'll be active in 10 minutes or less, sometimes when I've activated service (it's prepaid so I don't necessarily keep it month to month, sometimes I choose some other service for testing) it's done before I even sign out of their website, like 30 seconds or less and wham, the phone beeps telling me service is working.
So, the advice is: get a SIM card for the phone from the carrier you're interested in and go from there, not sure what else to suggest honestly.

You good sir are a god among men, phone and data are working like a charm. Now I can tell sprint to go **** themselves!
glad it worked for you. MY experiences with ls991, i am using it nvmode. zv6 rooted works for me with cdma data. but data doesnt work with zv9 or zva. global rom doesnt work unless, I edit build.prop target carrier to SPR . it is open to use it as global mode. I am using it in cdma nv mode.. not with any sim..

Ruim is basically used when it comes to cdma sim card.
"Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) is a card developed for cdmaOne/CDMA2000 ("CDMA") handsets that extends the GSM SIM card to CDMA phones and networks. To work in CDMA networks, the R-UIM contains an early version of the CSIM application."
Your is at&t 4g gsm card. [emoji4]
Check your build.prop and search for
ro.build.target_operator: OPEN
Most probably for global mode open works
For making it work on cdma nv, i have set it to SPR
You can tweak with it by changing to options, it will also change signal bar and 4g symbol like at&t
These will show a Standered international 4G data icon for 3G/HSPA+ and LTE for LTE.
ro.build.target_county: CA
ro.build.target_operator: TLS
These will show a standered international 3G data Icon for 3G/HSPA+ and 4G for LTE (Messes up settings menu pretty bad)
ro.build.target_county: SK
ro.build.target_operator: SKT
If you want the AT&T 4G and 4G LTE Icons.
ro.build.target_county: US
ro.build.target_operator: ATT

My fav cdma tools are qpst, cdma workshop, dfs, revskill and bit advance is qxdm All are freely available. I cant say which one is best hahah. Trust me for me, all of them worked at some instance when i was stuck. Revskill is great with htc finding spc. Though i used dfs mostly.
