WCDMA preferred ? - HTC Incredible S

When I do #*#*info*#*# I see my phone is set to WCDMA preferred. Is this the best choice ?, I live in an area where my phone spends a lot of time with only gprs coverage and data transfer in gprs mode seems to be very flaky, works sometimes but often nothing comes through ?
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA Premium App

Preferred is the best choice if your area doesn't have strong 3g/4g signal. Where I live I have strong 3g/4g signal so I set my phone to WCDMA only.
Only downside is when you hit a dead area with a weak signal you lose all connection because the phone is set to work on 3g/4g only. Can't make a call or surf the web.
If you don't want your phone switching to gprs set your phone to WCDMA only.

Thanks.
What about GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) I seem to recall from my HTC Hero days that people were recommending to set to that, but can't remember the reason (might have been a battery reason)

I never tested it out but supposedly preferred option favors 3g/4g and the auto option favors edge. Auto option saves battery because its looking for a weaker signal. There is a link below that talks about the option on the Nexus One in more detail.

you could try entering ##3282# , please wait while initiating...click edit mode, enter your msl. you can call sprint for your msl or run logcat and find the six digit number in there.
click on evdo, then click preferred mode. you should see automatic, hdr only, digital only, cdma only. try using digital only, it should run evdo only. also try hdr only as it should also only run in digital.
I tried entering that number and it says.the number or code u enterd is incorrect

That will only work if you're running a SenseUI (sucks, I know) ROM that has QPST on it. Flash a rom such as Nfinite's NFX or something like that. Then those ##xxxx# codes will work.
I believe you can still access basically the same menu on an aosp rom, don't remember the *#*#XXXX#*#* code though
You could check the market for an app called "network" or something similar. It may open it up

I can confirm, you need to use NFX 2.1 rom, as the FroyoSense is a GSM rom that is ported over to CDMA hero, and GSM roms dont use EPST as CDMA phones do...
So if I did the data thing would it still work if I switched back to this Rom
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Well this seems to be working I switched back to nfx hero and there's a root app for cdma phones called msl reader I went to the settings selected evdo set it to hdr then I went to the top forgot what its called then hit enable then I pressed comit chAnges and it rebooted now its staying on evdo but will it still be saved in the settings if I switch back to a gsm Rom

thats great. glad i could help you out. be aware that while running evdo/digital only you wont be able to receive or place calls. calls use 1x and if im not mistaken, sms also needs 1x. thats how it was back in the day, anyway. so if you use the device strictly as a modem then you dont have to worry about switching back when youre finished with your data'ing.

You can try forcing your phone to 3G. On your phone dialer, type in *#*#4636#*#* select phone settings, then scroll down and set preferred network type to WCDMA only...
Make a note of the setting before you change it, so that you can switch it back, if you need to...

That's the T-mobile version.
Compare the frequency range of your phone with the operating frequencies of your carrier...
Though, I'm not really sure it masters for GSM (I think the range is the same for both phone versions - 850/900/1800/1900)
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I think that is not the problem couse when I select 3g this put it next to the signal but just for e few minutes, then the signal fall down. I need to use 2g for the signal not fall down.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Ok. So you have the T-mobile / International version of the phone (the only other version is the AT&T version). The version you have supports the following frequencies for 3G : 900MHz, 1700MHz and 2100MHz.
What Carrier do you have (who is your phone service through?) Doing a quick search shows that CLARO (CompaƱia Dominicana de Telefonos, S.A.) is using 850MHz for their 3G. Not sure who you have. (http://92.52.91.22/maps/network.php...ners_info.php&hidcmappath=gsma/do/21989/comb/).
Also do this:
Type *#*#4636#*#* on your phone.
Select 'phone information'.
Scroll down to where it says 'set preferred network type'
What does it say?
My currier is orange Dominicana and their frequencies are 900hz. If i select 3g this put it next to signal but then the internet fall down, when the correct is that if in 3g does not work kept on 2g. But not is so, when the signal fall down is necesary put it in 2g if I whant to continue using the Internet.

It does not retain the Selected APN. It automatically reverts back to LTE.
Hmm it should retain till it looses signal at least that how I saw my device behave.
The other option I can think of is use build.prop editor app and turn off from there. May be I should try to write my app for this .

App would be awsome.. I was using 4636 code on my aria and had no issues. For some reason , vivid does not retain it.
I have been looking for a rom that has the option open to select the preferred network type. I need to select gsm sometimes while troubleshooting the network and my modded aria would let me select the network type. It was loaded with cyanogen and I am wondering if I will have to wait til the cyanogen mod for the vivid is released to get control of this function. Having the ability to lock the phone into a select technology is very helpful when testing a cell site.

but on stock ics vivid rom
Im using an app from play store called LTE OnOff and it serves the purpose.
I hat the option by default, but found it is also available in the app 4g test. Even allows to restrict to only lte.

I understand if set to LTE only that it "holds onto LTE better" I suppose, but is it usable? Once the LTE gets to around -120dbs on the One it is unusable I read. Sometimes at my work it will be on LTE but the minute I start using and significant data it drops to 3G.

WiFi and LTE at the same time?

Does anyone have a issue while being on WiFi and the LTE is still being didplayed? My device does this is there a way to eliminate the LTE while being on WiFi?

This phone prefers LTE, I have a very week and unstable LTE at my house so it's constantly cutting in and out. When I'm at home or work I set the phone to CDMA only. Look under mobile data settings. My battery lasts WAY longer and don't have a problem with getting calls. There is zero benefit to being on LTE when you are using wifi. Since LTE at the moment is data only. Only annoying part is switching it back and forth. I wish there was a widget for it or could set tasker to do it automatically.

Yea
LTE is built in to the SoC so when activated, it doesn't turn off. Unlike previous phones who had an external LTE radio, the battery usage is minimal. So overall you are saving battery. and true if you have weak or no LTE signal turning it off will help.

SoC = System on a Chip so LTE, CPU, GPU, CDMA, 3G etc... Are all on 1 chip the Snapdragon 801. Older phones had separate components and used more power but the components could be turned off when not needed. When you are switching to CDMA only you are not just turning off LTE you are changing the core settings on the chip.

I most definitely agree. I have an Airave at home and I have to manually switch to CDMA only while at home for the phone to connect to it. I have a very weak LTE signal so the phone automatically tries to connect to it. Very frustrating. Called airave supprt who said they are aware of the problem and are trying to work on a solution, but for now just manually switch to CDMA only when I get home.
