You can try forcing your phone to 3G. On your phone dialer, type in *#*#4636#*#* select phone settings, then scroll down and set preferred network type to WCDMA only...
Make a note of the setting before you change it, so that you can switch it back, if you need to...

Who is your carrier?
Do don't have the AT&T version by any chance, do you?

What are the last 4 digits of the serial number?
9100 or 9110?

Sorry but what number? Where is that number?

My serial number is 9100

That's the T-mobile version.
Compare the frequency range of your phone with the operating frequencies of your carrier...
Though, I'm not really sure it masters for GSM (I think the range is the same for both phone versions - 850/900/1800/1900)

I think that is not the problem couse when I select 3g this put it next to the signal but just for e few minutes, then the signal fall down. I need to use 2g for the signal not fall down.

Ok. So you have the T-mobile / International version of the phone (the only other version is the AT&T version). The version you have supports the following frequencies for 3G : 900MHz, 1700MHz and 2100MHz.
What Carrier do you have (who is your phone service through?) Doing a quick search shows that CLARO (Compañia Dominicana de Telefonos, S.A.) is using 850MHz for their 3G. Not sure who you have. (http://92.52.91.22/maps/network.php...ners_info.php&hidcmappath=gsma/do/21989/comb/).
Also do this:
Type *#*#4636#*#* on your phone.
Select 'phone information'.
Scroll down to where it says 'set preferred network type'
What does it say?

My currier is orange Dominicana and their frequencies are 900hz. If i select 3g this put it next to signal but then the internet fall down, when the correct is that if in 3g does not work kept on 2g. But not is so, when the signal fall down is necesary put it in 2g if I whant to continue using the Internet.

WCDMA preferred ?

When I do #*#*info*#*# I see my phone is set to WCDMA preferred. Is this the best choice ?, I live in an area where my phone spends a lot of time with only gprs coverage and data transfer in gprs mode seems to be very flaky, works sometimes but often nothing comes through ?

Preferred is the best choice if your area doesn't have strong 3g/4g signal. Where I live I have strong 3g/4g signal so I set my phone to WCDMA only.
Only downside is when you hit a dead area with a weak signal you lose all connection because the phone is set to work on 3g/4g only. Can't make a call or surf the web.
If you don't want your phone switching to gprs set your phone to WCDMA only.

Thanks.
What about GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) I seem to recall from my HTC Hero days that people were recommending to set to that, but can't remember the reason (might have been a battery reason)

I never tested it out but supposedly preferred option favors 3g/4g and the auto option favors edge. Auto option saves battery because its looking for a weaker signal. There is a link below that talks about the option on the Nexus One in more detail.

[Q] Milestone never receives EDGE?

Im on t-mobile and for some reason i never ever get edge, even if on 2G only. Only ever receive GPRS which is so slow... Help would be great thanks.
Anybody?

Are you running stock? If you arent, make sure you have the correct baseband set through recovery. (AOR forsure has this option)

In my own country, some Telco GSM network are using GPRS instead of EDGE for their 2G mode and WCDMA/UMTS for their 3G mode.
The telco that I am specifically using in my country offers EDGE for their 2G mode and HSDPA as their 3G mode.

[Q] connected to edge instead of hsdpa, how can i prevent that?

hello
i've been googling this for a couple of hours now and i cant seem to find how to solve my problem
i was with my gf today, she has a S3. we are both connected to the same network operator. my signal was E , hers was H .. i went to system settings->about phone->status on both phones and compared signal strength and it was about the same.
my brother's iphone 4s almost always have much faster internet when i'm connected to edge (that means he's not on edge) - he's also connected to the same network operator.
its driving me crazy , why won't my cappy stay connected to hsdpa when its possible? how can i change that ? (WCDMA is preferred, baseband selection is automatic)
i'm using I9000XXJVT modem. was using slim bean rom 4.2.2 build 2.5 (now i'm on build 3) . unofficial semaphore kernel.
about my network operator technology from wikipedia (its a virtual operator):
"Its network is an HSPA+[citation needed] network in the 2100Mhz band, with roaming also available on Cellcom's 1800Mhz GSM[6] and 850Mhz/2100Mhz HSPA+ network."
any help would be appreciated.

type *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer and then go to phone info, scroll down a little bit and you'll see it .. there is no UMTS there ..
i forgot to mention that I DO GET CONNECTED to hsdpa when there is good signal , but when there is low signal it switches automatically to edge , and i always thought thats normal and its ok , but today i got really surprised , 2 iphones + 1 sgs3 , that were on the same network operator were having much faster internet than i had. i had 2 E bars , the s3 had 2 H bars. and as i said before the s3 had just about the same signal strength (dBm and asu)
thanks for the reply though
Sounds like the iphone 4s and sgs 3 are probably connecting to the 4g network.

as far as i know there is no 4g in my country yet + the s3 is the international version so it doesnt support 4g anyway (im pretty sure its the same with the iphone)
Change your preferred network to GSM auto (PRL)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Open dialer *#*#2263#*#*
Then try desired band

Let us know what the results are for you after you change the preferred type to what i suggested in my previous post.

my network provider supports hsdpa on 850 and 2100mhz and edge on 1800mhz, i still want the 1800mhz where there is no 850/2100mhz signal , but i want it to be 3rd priority (where 850 and 2100 are the first 2 priorities)
theoretically WCDMA preferred should do what i want , but its not. thats whats driving nuts..
thanks for the replies
oh man.. i said it myself , my network provider supports 850mhz .. i'm using i9000 modem , which doesn't support 850mhz hsdpa .. this could be it .. is there any way to check on which band i'm connected right now ?
EDIT: the answer is *#*#0011#*#* .. i'll check this out later when the scenario happens again, and i'll post results (i'm home now and i have full hsdpa signal here, so i cant investigate any further atm)

[Q] Avoiding HSPAP (H+)

Well, in the city I live the 3G+ signal is very poor, while my 3G (HSDPA) runs flawlessly (1mbps stable connection, what is pretty rare to find here in Brazil).
The problem comes when my cellphone keeps connecting to 3G+ towers and I just couldn't find how to keep HSDPA only.
Looking for some help, 'cause I know some samsung devices got a hidden dial number to set only hspa hsupa hsdpa hspa+ etc and razr i doesn't.
Thanks in advance
Hello Henrique. Only for curiousity. Which operator are you using in Brasil? I am in Brasil too and o'm using Tim bit i never reach 1mb.

I'm using TIM at the moment. My plan is what they call as "TIM Beta Teste" and I'm able to reach 1.2Mbps sometimes w/o data limits neither speed limits.
here it goes some speedtest
btw, i think i've managed to get into this menu by dialing to #073887*. the only problem is that it asks me for a "SIM network unlock PIN", and i've been trying many things since then and i can't get it to work.

I9305 doesn't connect to 4G [SOLVED]

Suggest you take the phone to your network and let them check your network settings .
jje
well..
you operator may support it but that doesn't mean you are in an area that has 4G.
make sure you have a 4G enabled sim. if your sim is pre- 2011 get a new one.
some providers dont inlcude 4G in there plans and require an added payment to enable it. speak with your provider to see.
another thing you could do is go on your providers page and make sure your within range of the 4G network. keep in mind that the range of 4G is limited and some towns don't have it all togther.
try this:
settings-> more settings -> mobile networks -> network mode and make sure its set to Auto Mode.
make sure you have all the APN settings required.
they are automatic for the most part but can fail.
to re install them delete all the APN settings and search for networks.
some ROMs do not support the 4G modem and cause issues so be careful when flashing.
if the worse comes to worse and you are tech savvy take a look at this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010116
but be careful and good luck
