kernel version is not equal to android version.
android 2.3 (gingerbread) from google is using 2.6.35 kernel version. but we can use 2.6.32 or 2.6.37 or other version.
so we can't say linux kernel 2.6.32 = android 2.2 (froyo)
ps: sorry, wrong quote

Thats right, we have Android 2.2/2.3 running 2.6.29, and there native kernels are .32 (Froyo) and .35 (Gingerbread)
Jack
If the kernel is ported correly does that mean gingerbread Tom's would be Easter to port and have less problems?
not realy
it just means that some functions would work better and nativaly
such as wifi tethering
can you guide me or make a tut on the how to port 2.6.35 kernel? i am willing to port that kernel or feature of it on huawei u8230 which have already an unofficial kernel 2.6.32...thank you.

It's new kernel for Jelly bean... Kernel 3.x... I didn't understand difference between 2.x and 3.x... Which kernel is better? Especially for battery life...
And this new kernel is only for Jelly Bean? Or could I install on CM9 stable???
Thanks...

In desktop environment, like Linux Ubuntu (Android is also a Linux), kernel 3 is being use long ago, but it's still in heavy development. The latest version is 3.5.
3.x is only rename 2. 6. 40, new stable kernel is relased in 60 - 80 days. .
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda app-developers app
No, Linux kernel 3.0 is not a rename of 2.6.40
I don't know where you get such info.
And yeah, android is using Linux kernel.

I was wondering if someone could port a stable version of MIUI GB with radio and HDMI based on the modded sharp rom and kernel 2.6.35.6 because everything works there. It would be a great help as it would work 100%
Thanks in advance
If you could also point out how to port the radio and HDMI drivers for GB, that would also help. Thanks.
MIUI 2.8.3
Kernel CK 0.4d
Android 4.0.4

Two things
1. There's already a .35 based port by nitindeck.
2. Nobody has successfully ported HDMI and FM drivers to any custom roms yet.

Actually - This isn't true. GB roms like this one :-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367974
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526848
which are based on stock and Sharp rc1 have everything working. But only GB. I actually want a similar ROM with miui settings, music, statusbar and launcher.
If i'm wrong, please don't get mad. Im a bit of a newbie
Thanks for the response

The ROMs you've quoted, like maclite macdragon, sharp mod fix 1, etc., don't quite fit in the definition of CUSTOM ROMs. They're just stock ones that have bloatware removed and are rooted. You can make those yourself by flashing an .nb0, installing CWM, taking a nandroid backup and edited through dsixda kitchen found in the forums.
The ones that are real custom ROMs like CM7 and MIUI don't have FM n HDMI working yet.
PS. for thanking a useful post I recommend the thanks button!
Peace

Takes slightly more than that
The reason they work is the binaries are compiled exactly for that phone and are not ported or recompiled sources from elsewhere/other hardware (incl. MIUI). Unfortunately none of the manufacturers has given us proper sources for ICS to follow step. The closest it gets is the Sharp ROM, which has the newer kernel, still is GB. Kind of hybrid. If I'd make a ROM today I'd probably base it on that, same as the chaps at droidsans are doing. For the simple reason everything works...

Im wondering why all the Android kernels are so old? For example: ive the newest Rom for the ace (thanks to wayland) but it just has a 2.6.y kernel. Even backtrack, blackbuntu or ue have old kernels (3.2.y-3.5.y) . So my question is : why does no one use the 3.7.y or 3.8 kernel ?
Sorry if this is a stupid question i dont know much about it
And sorry for bad english

Wine tastes better the longer you keep it. Many of the kernels are unique in their own sense as well as stable. That's why we still use them !

Our Ace has some hardware limitations and it is very difficult task to port 3.x kernel in our ace.
thanks so would it be possible to get kernel 3.8 rc2 to my backtrack?? cause wlan and eth drivers are not working for my lenovo ideapad y580 in the official kernel
Hi fellow mates!
I'm currently using Samsung Galaxy Mini GT-S5570.
Android Version: 2.3.4
Baseband Version: S5570DXKPD
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-perf-CL561540 [email protected] #1
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.DXKPD
Anyone have any idea on how to overclock for this particular device? Or do you have any links with regards to this question?
Would appreciate if anyone could help!
Many thanks!
To overclock, u would need to flash a kernel that supports overclocking.
Check out this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1443907
Look for the section on kernel.

Almost every custom ROM supports overclocking.
Be careful if you overlock your device your battery will die and you schould must buy a new one in a year

Hi
There is leaked version of JB 4.2.2 for C660X by Sir.DoomLord
But kernel version remains on 3.4
But Sony Mobile h confirmed 3.6 *nix kernel
Is this because of for example pre version of 4.2.2 or ...
Anyone know more??
Sent via my Google Nexus 7 | 32GB.WiFi
Out of curiosity, any reason wgy you are interested in this kernel version? There are no android-specific improvements in 3.5 or 3.6 that i know of, and the latest kernel is 3.9 so I wonder if you gave reasons other than android user latest numbers heat
