New captivate will not flash 2.1 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got a newer captivate just recently through warranty due to it no longer charging. Well this one came factory with 2.2. I know 2.2 had 3e recovery and I've done the fix to flash unsigned files and was able to get into cwm but it failed everyone I tried to flash a rom. I've tried to flash standard 2.1 and rogers 2.1 via odin3 one click and odin 1.81 via the pit and tar files. Neither way will get my phone working on 2.1. So I have to resort back to the stock 2.2 or rogers 2.2. What am I doing wrong? I just want my custom roms back!!! Please find it in your hearts to help even though I've pissed off a few people with my 3e recovery question.

Try using the 3e recovery fix in Trusselo's sig - just unzip and use the .bat file with your phone plugged (in debugging).
It should let you flash a custom ROM after that. No need to go back to stock.
As for Odin, your phone could be a recent build and you need a specefic odin for 1010 and up.
EDIT: What was the error when you were trying to flash a ROM through cwm?

I unzipped the modified recovery file to the /bin folder via root explorer. Haven't read anything about a .bat file though.
Here is the error I received in cwm after selecting the rom zip:
E:cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1)
(device or resource buys)
E:can't mount SDCARD:ROM.zip
Installation aborted

Well it's not really needed but the .bat file will run a command that will place the recovery for you through your computer.
Not needed since you moved it yourself using root explorer (make sure you're in mount r/w).
Did you try it after placing the new recovery and rebooting your phone?

what are you trying to flash?
how are you flashing it? with the fixed 3e recovery? or with cwm?
did you rename it properly 'update.zip' for 3e?

I was trying to flash continuum 4. I tried flashing it through cwm in recovery mode. Named the cwm file update.zip rebooted into 3e recovery mode (with the modded recovery file) selected "reinstall packages" then tried to select the continuum rom and thats where I got the error message.

when you select reinstall package, it searches for a file named update.zip on the root of your sd and flashes it so there's nothing more that you have to do.
Now did you fix your problem? I can't tell by the way you wrote that lol
Did you name the file update.zip? or did you name it update?
If you named it update.zip.. it reads it as update.zip.zip as it is a zip file. So all you have to do is to name is "update" with the ".zip" being the type of file.

So youre saying that I can flash roms without going into cwm ? I get into cwm by naming it "update" so I can open it up by selecting "reinstall packages" in the recovery menu. I cant have cwm renamed as "update" and the rom I want to flash as "update" right?

If you moved the 3e recovery fix in /system/bin, you will get into cwm recovery after reinstall package (I believe you have to to it twice as the phone only reboots the 1st time).
Now most of the new ROM have a kernel with built in cwm recovery in their full flash. Which is why you can rename the file to update and reinstall package.
But if you're on 2.2 - you do need the 3e recovery fix so you can get past the signature verification.
Also, you can only have 1 file named update(.zip) in the root of your sd and you want it to be the full ROM file.

If it takes you to cwm.. You can just "install zip from sd card" - What the file is called won't change anything.
And believe me, once you're on a custom ROM, you won't want to go back.

I understand what you're saying about flashing the rom from cwm but as I said before it gives me an error message as soon as I select the rom from my sd card. Could the rom file be corrupt or does that error message seem more phone related?
And I meant it as I wanted to go back to my old captivate and 2.1 bc I had no problems flashing roms on it. I've already flashed cognition and serendipity on my old phone with little problems. This new captivate is being a pain in my ass.

Well I'd say to try a different ROM. I duno which one you're trying to install but make sure of 2 things:
1. It's Froyo based.
2. It's a full flash ROM (not only a update)

[Q] Flash custom rom without custom recovery? possible?

Hi!
I've succesfully rootet my SGS. testet wtih terminal, and i got the # sign.
Also, I have suoer users installed, and granted access to ROM manager, e.g.
Now, I would like to flash darky's custom ROM. And usually, i would boot into custom recovery menu and wipe, and apply zip from sd. (this was on my HTC).
Well, this is causing me some problems. I would rather not use Odin, as it seem a bit unsafe but I installed ROM manager, and flashed Clockwork Mod recovery. Now, when I reboot into custom recovery I get the stock android recovery, though ROM manager, says my current version of clowckwork mod is installed, and all went succesfull.
Now, my question is. Can i rename the zip file update.zip and flash with the stock android recovery anyway?
When you flash clockwork i think it just puts a .zip file on the sd card so youbshould try flashing the custom recovery through stock recovery. If not then ODIN is the way to go which can be perfectly safe if done properly.
*You have to select reinstall packages i think.

I never get into clockwork mod, so I guess I dont get the option to reinstall packages... The only option I have beside wiping and reboot is to apply update.zip from sdcard in android recovery. But I don't think there is any update.zip on my sdcard. not last i checked at least. Guess Ill have to go with Odin then :/
Usually the option to reinstall packages is on stock recovery. I might be wrong but odin is easy to do if you get the right firmware for your phone. Sorry i ciuldnt help more.

Thanks again. I get wiser by the hour
I think im on android recovery (3e) as I recall, perhaps they removed it
I was wandering. I found the clockworkmod.zip /recovery_update.zip on the sd-card. if I move this to root of sdcard and rename to update.zip, can I then flash it via android recovery with the "apply update.zip from sdcard" function, or is this not for the purpose?
That might work, you may aswell try butif not try looking at the url i posted and see if it helps. If not then im sorry for wasting your time :S

thanks, but i think Im caught in between... i cant choose reinstall packages, and I need to get back to stock kernel...
got download mode to work now, and think I know what to do from here. thanks for the link and response
Finally - reverted back to stock android recovery 2e and flash clockworkmod recovery.... but - a new problem... when in clockworkmod, i need to choose zip from sd card, when i go into this, and choose external sd, it says no files
what to do? the files are there, when I put in the sd card in the PC the files are there...
Not entirely sure but i think you're meant to put the .zip on the internal sd. If not then maybe the sd card is not fat32 format. This is only speculation :S

Do you have 3 button recovery?
If you do, dont bother installing, ROM Manager, you wont need it. Just copy the ROM and CWM's update.zip to your phone, 3 button into recovery select reinstall packages, you'll then "go back", reinstall packages again, then you reboot into recovery, and install your ROM
Where can i get that

Okay. So, you were running Paragon, you flashed Phoenix, and you want to go back to Paragon.
Hopefully you made a backup of your ROM before you flashed Phoenix. You then used Odin to flash to stock, rooted, and installed ROM manager.
If you flashed back to UCJF6 (Android 2.1) you won't be able to restore a backup based on Froyo 2.2.1, which is what Paragon is based on. That's why you're getting an error. You're going to need to do a fresh flash of Paragon. Place the base Paragon ROM on your SD card.
Use ROM Manager to flash the base Paragon ROM. Now, on the base Paragon ROM, use ROM Manager to restore your backup.
I'm hoping you did everything one should do prior to returning to stock with Odin, as in creating your backup, disabling your lagfix, etc, before using Odin to get back to stock. Also, take into account that you need to have the same kernel installed on the newly flashed ROM and the ROM you're attempting to reinstall. So, if you had a custom kernel installed when you made your backup of Paragon, make sure to flash that kernel on your newly installed base Paragon before you try to restore.
Good luck.
The sad thing is that i cant use rom manager i rooted my but it doesnt let me use clockword recovery

I too am having a similar problem, I'm on stock and trying to get ROM manager to work but it won't let me flash ClockworkMod Recovery or even an older version. As stated already I get the error message "An error occurred while downloading your recovery." However, it seems that if I select my phone as an i9000 Galaxy S, ClockworkMod will download, but it won't work.
And for the record, using the 3-button recovery I only get the options of:
reboot phone
reinstall packages (which says the update.zip is a bad file and won't open)
delete all user data
delete cache data
I should add that this is the first time I've seen this situation and usually I'm able to "install .zip from sd card" but in this case I can't.

My apologies. I should have read your original post a little closer.
You can try installing clockwork recovery manually via this method:
Take the attached zip file and rename it update.zip. Connect your phone via USB to your computer. You'll notice there's already an update.zip file on your phone. That's the update.zip which was used to give you root permission. Take the newly named update.zip file (clockworkmod) and replace the update.zip (root) on your phone's sd card.
Now, disconnect your phone from your computer, and power down your phone. Press the volume up AND volume down button at the same time, then hold down power. Keep holding all three buttons down. The ATT screen should pop up once, but keep holding down the buttons. The ATT screen will pop up again, and now, you can let go. This should get you to the stock recovery screen. Use your volume down button to scroll down "reinstall packages". Use the power button to select the option. This will install clockworkmod on your phone. Now, it'll come back to the same stock recovery screen. Tick down once again to "reinstall packages" until clockworkmod pops up.
I'm not sure if ROM manager will work with this version of clockworkmod, as I stopped using ROM manager a while ago. I just reboot into recovery manually and navigate clockworkmod with phone's physical buttons. I guess you can give it a go.
If this doesn't work, something might have happened with with the odin flash, or a lagfix wasn't disabled prior to going back to stock, or Dalvik cache wasn't wiped, or your cache partition wasn't wiped, etc, and you might be out of luck.
When I want to flash a ROM, I always make a backup, copy the backup onto my computer, backup my apps with Titanium Backup, copy that backup onto my computer, disable any lagfixes, flash to stock using ODIN, master clear, root, install clockworkmod, copy the new ROM zip file to my SD card, do a factory reset in clockworkmod, wipe cache partition in clockworkmod, and wipe Dalvik cache in clockworkmod, then install my new ROM.
I've never had any problems using those steps. Good luck.

you may need to do this 2-3 times before automatically going into CWM (you will notice the difference)

you dont have CWM at all. either try ROM manager again. or flash CF-Root / kernel thru Odin, that will give you 2e / CWM recovery which will allow you to flash the ROM.
You CANNOT flash ROMS with 3e (stock) android recovery

you can only install CWM via this method if your recovery is version 2e (or something like that)
if you want to be sure check your rom version and find a hacked kernel (speedmod or voodoo) with CWM and install it using the PDA box in odin nothing else (no pit, no modem etc) and make sure repartition is unchecked. I found this worked when others methods failed.
Yes its 2e

[Q] Problem trying to flash a custom rom onto a galaxy s on orange uk - recovery mode

I've downloaded ROM manager and clicked on 'flash clockwork recovery'. this placed a 'update.zip' onto my phone. I downloaded a custom ROM and placed this zip in the same place. in ROM manager i choose install from sd card, locate the custom rom and select it. i reboot into clockwork recovery mode and i get the 'android system recovery mode' The options at the top are in blue. i believe this is wrong?
I'm led to believe i should click on 'apply sdcard:update.zip' but when i do i get
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Install aborted
I'm using a samsung galaxy s with the standard orange rom.
Any ideas?
U need to root your device first... flash a kernel like speedmod and it'll rot ur device after this u can install ur custom rom. remember while flashing via odin repartition should be unchecked
You would root and then just need to flash update.zip, dont place rom anywhere near it. I would delete your current update.zip and go through process (minus rom) again.
Alternatively and easier, is what ^^ he said.

Dont i need to put the downloaded mod on my sdcard to install it? :/
Rom manager puts the update.zip file there but when i try to run it it fails :/
Yep place the rom into sdcard/
Sometimes in stock recovery, you may have to choose flash update.zip twice to install cwm
However
Mate, if you can use odin, just flash a pre rooted kernel with cwm installed. Should take about 5 mins to download and flash. Chainfire would probably be my recommendation.
Make sure you read kernel flashing instructions before you start.

i would suggest you apply the 3 button combo fix though before proceeding. If you can get into dl mode, its nigh impossible to brick, if not, then its all too easy.....

Ok, I have ROM Manager premium installed, rooted, etc. I'm running 2.2 version UVKB5 on my T Mobile Samsung Vibrant.
I've selected the option to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery for the "Samsung Vibrant" and it won't boot to CWR. If I select reintall packages, it fails every time.
Help!
did you install both the free and premium version of rom manager?

Make sure the "update.zip" file is on your Int SD card... power off your phone.
While holding down the Vol up+down, press and hold all 3 buttons till the "Samsung/Vibrant splash screen pops up.
You should boot into stock recovery, use vol up and down to move up and down and choose "reinstall update" with power... it should reboot and bring you right back to where you were... repeat choose "reinstall update" with power... now you should boot into CWM recoery.
I think the problem is that you have the new recovery (3e I think) that requires signed update.zip files. I'd recommend using Odin3 to flash another kernel which will come with CWM. If you don't want to do that, there is a guide somewhere on xda to allow 3e recovery to flash unsigned update.zip files.

Exactly clockwork will not install with 3e recovery. Either flash a new kernel or do the 3e mod recovery. Odin will take 1 min to complete its process of flashing a kernel, you should definitely do this. Or just go back to stock and start your flashing journey from there.

Yup, I installed ROM Manager, then bought the premium key. I've got all functionality available to me.
Only problem is that when it flashes the recovery, nothing happens. If I reboot to recovery, it says the update.zip has an invalid signature. It seems nothing works. Am I supposed to flash back to droid 2.1 to get this thing working? It seems like it should be easier than this....

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions on kernels to use and a link for more info on what specifically a kernel is/does? Last thing I want to do is brick this puppy

If your running CyanogenMod, there no way around Odin'ing to get back to stock. CyanogenMod (CM7) changes the partitioning to MTD from Stock RFS/Ext4. Only way to get that back is to Odin back to stock.
