Not even ODIN want's to play! - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've decided to try a new rom on my Samsung Captivate and in the upgrade process the USB became loose. I use a mac but I borrowed a friends Windows 7 laptop so I could use ODIN
It showed a phone--!--computer image
I learned how to fix it using Odin.
Downloaded ODIN3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
1. Pull the battery, sim card, and external SD card.
2. Start ODIN3. (with admin privs and without)
3. Insert your battery, then press and hold the volume buttons.
4. Connect the phone to your PC.
I've tried both start & master clear here is what I get.
Start:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
Master Clear:
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> Master Clear Started....
This is as far as they get, I've tried it several time... Help?

Yes. I've tried 4 different ones, all recognizing my phone.

master clear
the phone must be booted normally with usb debugging on.
for one click
try again.

It black unless I pop everything out, plug a usb in, press volume +&- while pressing power, insert battery, release power, which then enters download mode.

this is the time where i would recommend AIO captivate toolbox....specifically version 3.0

EDIT: I googled his site baywolf.weebly.com (which he shut down) but my friends at google cached his site, i found a multiupload link to it.
NOT Recommended Beta Versions (Heimdall Based):
You need .NET 4 and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable installed. Download .NET | Visual C++ 32bit & 64bit.
Captivate 3.0b:
http://www.multiupload.com/FKMYKEXC6O
How do I use it now that I have it?

After hours of struggle and fighting with my Captivate it saw things my way... and decided that it would like to be used again and after about 200 ODIN attempts it finally worked but with toolbox 2.5 (3.0 kept giving me errors) Its back on stock and I'm very happy. Thanks for the toolbox idea! Worked great!

[Q] Help! Woke up this morning and phone won't turn on!

I woke up this morning and my phone won't turn on! I hold down power and see the Samsung splash screen... then the display goes off and nothing happens. I can't launch into recovery mode... I can launch into Download Mode, but can't do anything from there... (no response to any buttons)
I tried pulling out the battery and SIM - to no avail...
I am running a rooted Bell phone with the lag fix.
Please give me suggestions! What do I need to do to recover this using my PC and adb?
Time to recharge your SGS?
Before i give you the bad news
try Flashing the phone with Odin, see if you can complete a successful flash
However you'll most likely see an Odin error concerning mounting the drive, your Internal SD drive is most likely dead, and it'll need to be replaced by Samsung/Bell service center.
there are many known cases like this related to the lag fix

if you hold the power button, does it turn on at all?
how far does it go into the boot process?
does it get stuck after the pretty Galaxy S swirling logo?

I don't get the swirling logo... I just get the static splash page "Samsung Galaxy S" - it stays for about a second, then the screen goes black.
I'm trying to figure out what to do once I'm in download mode... I have Samsung Kies (which won't detect it...) and Odin (which won't detect it)

that doesn't sounds right
try installing Odin on another machine
seems like the PC you are trying to use has the USB port locked up.
i've had that happen on mine before
if you turn off the PC, remove the power cord
power it on, then put the power cord
and power it on again
that should reset it
Ok, Odin seems to recognize the phone (it installed all the drivers when it was in Download Mode) - I clicked "start" and got the following:
<ID:0/008> Added!!
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:8)..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/008> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/008> Removed!!
then the phone went back into the flashing battery symbol... I need to grab the official Bell Samsung Galaxy S .pit file I guess.
Samsung Kies just sat there trying to connect when the phone was in Download Mode...
Okay, so I've downloaded the 0803.pit file... I just need to know which firmware to flash it with under PHONE, PDA, CSC, and DUMP...
Would really appreciate the help!
JH2 firmware for all 3 and flash with correct pit file and click partition (but will wipe all data).

Also, 0803.pit works for JH2 right?

I'm just going to try to find JG9 and upgrade via Samsung Kies... that's if I can find JG9 - these are so hard to find!
Hi Mate,
I just had the same problem - could not reboot from normal recovery, could not reboot from clockworkmod recovery. I had to launch nandroid recovery.
On my unit, it seems that the problem was caused by a conflict between setcpu profiles and the alter minfree settings from ryanza's oclf.
If you have clockworkmod installed and have backed up your rom, you should be able to use nandroid recovery.
I have now changed setcpu not to run on boot, and have not used alter minfree - prob seems to be sorted.
Hope this helps (you or somebody else).
Regards, Paul.

Saw that.. but there's no I-Series... I can't see any firmwares for Samsung Galaxy S there - am I blind?
EDIT: Found it - thanks.
This JH2 on his site is the "updated" version of JH2 that fixes the 3-button recovery as per the Facebook page right?

The phone still shows Download mode.
Do I need Odin v1.3 or is Odin v1.0 sufficient? Using PIT0512
EDIT: Pulled out battery... tried again... now see blue status bar moving along the bottom... fingers crossed that this works!
It completed... and same thing is happening. Can't start it up...

Trying to flash back to stock

I'm trying to flash back to stock but can't get it to work.
I've tried using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 to flash back but it sticks at sbl.bin and then the screen on my phone turns off.
I tried using Odin with the JH2 firmware but it just sits at modem.bin
I've flashed to JF6 before and it always worked but now i can't seem to get it to work. I have perception installed right now, not sure what version.
Any help would really be appreciated.

Get into download mode by holding volume +/- and plugging in your USB cable.. DO NOT press power!
Once in download mode (you'll see a yellow triangle and the android guy shoveling) start up Odin and it should flash.
Goodluck!

does it normally take a long time to process that file? When i used to do it, it would flash really quickly.
No that flashes almost immediately. Pull battery, leave out for ten minutes or so, try again.

Now it stopped at <ID:0/003> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
then the screen went blank
I had that happen to me as well. I ended up rebooting my computer and phone a few times and it ended up flashing.
Like mcord11758 said above, sbl.bin should flash almost immediately. The entire flashing processes shouldn't stall.
I finally got it to flash.
I reinstalled XP Pro on an older dell laptop and it finally worked!
Does anyone know why it works sometimes but not others?

Nope, you really do not need to flash stock to change roms. As you can see flashing stock has its risk

Help! Can't flash firmware

Hey guys....
So, this morning I decided to try and update to the new cognition rom, and used this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364 as my guide.
I downloaded Odin, put the phone into download mode with adb, and hit start. And it hung. And nothing happened. For forever. So after a good 30 minutes or so, I unplugged the phone and cancelled odin. I got the (phone) ! (pc) screen, but I WAS (and still am) able to get into download mode with the volume buttons held, and then inserting the power cable.
I've been reading & searching all morning on the forums, have tried the Odin 1 clicks, the AIO Captivate toolbox, the firmware that flashes without the bootloaders built in....and they all hang.
I have a win7 x64 machine, but tried on an XP machine, but couldn't even get the machine to recognize the phone... Right now, I've got odin v1 running, i have this in the display:
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<ID:0/005> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/005> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/005> zImage
and a green progress bar above the ID:COM box (and KERNEL in the white box above that). But it has been sitting in the same place for a good 30-45 minutes.
*update* The progress bar is moving a little. Just very very slowly, it's been over an hour to go from the "left" side of the O in "COM" below it to the right side of the O... So I'm going to let it run overnight and see what happens... *crosses fingers*
Help!
*UPDATE 2*
It finally finished a few hours later, but the phone still wouldn't power up, but I could still 3 button it into download mode. So after doing some more searching, I stumbled upon this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117407&highlight=flash+boot+loader, and figured, what the hell, might as well give it a shot. So I fired up ODIN one click, it found the phone, and flashed just fine! I'm now sitting in front of a stock eclair captivate
Now, off to find a new ROM. Hope this information can help someone else!

Lol off topic but if there is only 1 or 2 posts in a thread and the OP is very long like this, quoting it is actually slightly obnoxious when everyone else had to scroll all the way through the stuff they just read to see what has been suggested to add further input. Especially when the quote is 400 times longer than your post. This is especially the case if you are the first to reply
sorry just "trying to keep the forums clean"

How to Flash a Kernel

how come when i d/l a kernel
I897UCKJ3 Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread

from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
it's a 6mb file or something. How do i use a .tar? I tried opening Odin 1.85. but what do i load it as? PDA, PHONE?
Sincerely,
Semi-confused
like Boog's KJ3 Kernel. I don't have CWM, so i need to flash that kernel to move on with Illuimance. But how do i used ODIN to do that?
Place kernel in PDA and hit start. (MAKE SURE repartition is UNchecked).
i did, but it doesn't do anything to the phone.
Debugging or DL?
ODIN recognizes phone in debugging, but not DL mode for some reason...
repartition unchecked, and the .tar loaded to PDA slot.
i click start, but it just says (.../failed 1)

Put your phone in download mode first.
You have to be on download mode. Try rebooting your computer or using main USB port. Also checking drivers and cable also helps.

U have to be in download mode. Right click on Odin and run it as admin, also if it still fails try a different primary usb port (1st one on a laptop or the ones in the back of pc that connect to the motherboard). Removing sdcard (if u have one) and sim wouldn't hurt if ur still facing issues.

Do U see a yellow indicator on Odin saying something like COM6 or some other number? If not than Odin is not seeing ur phone....high chances of faulty data cable...happened to me....i changed the cable worked like charm
EDIT: Even the above scenerio can be caused by faulty cable
yeah it sees it as COM5.
i plugged the phone in (download screen didn't pop up) but ODIn still recognized it, i hit start, and it's working now (just a blue status bar progressing across the bottom) So i guess it's going to work now? odd...
thanks though. I've had crazy misfortune with this phone so far.
yep... working like a charm. (finally)

[Q] i9000b won't flash "Odin Xmitdata Fail" device bricked

hi there..
since i bought my phone it never got a firmware update, neither OTA nor a manual one. It came and stayed with android 2.2 with all these years.
Now that i am more into android i decided to use a custom rom, this one = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012061
But before flashing this rom i had to flash it with an official 2.3 rom, since it was one of the requirements and it still had a 2.2 in it.
I went to samobile, grabbed this rom http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=4340, plus a .PIT that was necessary according to the tutorial i was following.. and on the first attempt i got the error and the device got bricked.. So i tried, and tried, and tried... but i always end up getting the same error within Odin. This one:
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..

<ID:0/004> __Xmit Write fail
<ID:0/004> XmitData Fail..
<ID:0/004> Complete(Write) operation failed.
The device is now bricked, i can't even enter in downloadmode anymore, so i bought a USBJIG to enter in downloadmode and it works, but i still get the same error when trying to flash. I've tried dozens of different roms (of course all of them were made for this device), different versions of Odin, different USB port, Samsung Kies is installed but it is completely closed. I don't know what else to do, i need help... Please help?

you cannot use i9000 ROM's only i9000B ROM's, you need to kill KIES , Open task manager and close these : Kies.exe , KiesTrayAgent.exe, and KiesPDLR.exe
preferably use Odin 1.85 or 3.04
FIRST STEP for ALL Problems:-
Whenever you have a problem with your Phone, power it down, remove battery, remove SIM card and Ext SD card and press and hold your power button for at least 30 seconds to a min, before reinserting battery and trying any solution
First reboot PC after a power cord unplug and also reboot the Phone after a battery pull. Always use a Fresh Odin after any attempt to flash, than make sure you "Uncheck Repartition", If you had checked it or clicked PIT when you are not using one. You should also be running Odin as an Admin and ensure that KIES is not running when using Odin. Most of all, only use Samsung USB cable and not others as they may be incompatible and trying it out on a lap top or another PC ( when it happens repeatedly)
i discovered what was causing the error. it was Windows 8, samsung drivers are not working correctly on it, i don't know if this is a localized or a global problem... my guess is it is a global one
i had Kies installed in windows 8,and all its process were killed before flashing pretty much on all of the time i was trying to flash.
yesteday by pure luck my sister came to my house for a visit, and she had hers notebook with her that btw has windows7, so i decided to try flashing the phone through it, i grabbed it installed samsung drivers and didn't install Kies, surprisingly, for me at least, the flashing went perfectly OK on the first attempt.
after the flash i had one error, "couldn't mount db/data", i googled it and easily fixed it already, but that is another thing for another thread.
thank you for helping

All PC's running any version of windows seem to get USB connection problems at one time or the other But lap tops and notebooks seldom have this problem.
