On my WinMo phone I could easily make custom wallpapers. On the Cappy, not so much. I made a few designs in 480X800 size, landscape and portrait, copied them to the phone, but when I try to use them as wallpapers I can only select a small area of the graphic to use. How should I size a jpg so that I can use it full screen as a wallpaper? Thanks.
would like to know that as well!
You need the full size of the image to be 960x800.
A single screen is 480x800.
I don't have my wallpaper scroll, so I create a 960x800 image canvas in photoshop with a 480x800 image that I place in the middle for the wallpaper.

I'm going to try that, but here's the thing...when I go to select an image for a wallpaper from the Gallery the selection box is more of a square than a rectangle. Even if the center of my image is within that 480X800 area inside the 960X800 area, it will still be cut off because of this.
960x800 isn't that far off from square. At least, it's a lot more square than 480x800. If you have the right proportions, you can expand the box to the full size of the canvas.

One of the other options is to use something like Flikie(Free in the market). It'll allow you to set a 960x800 as the wallpaper without cropping

Can we get a wallpaper thread started? I think the wallpaper dimensions of the Captivate are different from other phones right? Also.. how do i go about deleting the stock wallpapers, and adding some to replace them?
You can download or put an image in the sd card. Open it up in Gallery, Select Menu, More, Set As
You can then set as Wallpaper (or Contact Icon) and it'll even give you a scaling box for cropping to the correct dimensions.

Dimensions
I think the wallpaper dimensions for the crop are ratios of 6:5. So that means 720x600 will fill up the entire crop box, as will 1080x900. Of course you do not have to use these dimensions for your wallpapers but then you get parts of it left out. Just what I have found playing around with it on my own. Hope that helps.
Here is what I made (Yeah Im a Rush fan)
Here are some I made yesterday after browsing the new uploads at Stock Exchange. I resized them to 960x800 at 96 dpi and they look pretty good on my phone.

there is a great app in the marketplace called, Backgrounds
its pretty much a full easy access web search of a ton of wallpapers, you can change category, apply directly from the app, or save the image and apply it later. I recommend you check it out.
yea that app is good has a ton of wallpapers
Does anyone know where the Captivate stores its wallpapers? I'd like to see what size/format the default options are, and put my custom ones in the same place, but I can't seem to find them. I'd be ok knowing where either the TouchWiz or LauncherPro wallpapers are stored.
Also, here's some wallpapers I cropped from images found through google image search (the originals got compressed by the forum, originals are in the zip file):

wallpapers aren't actually stored in any directory they're actually in the app.
go fond the stock Rom and extract it.
go to the /system/app directory and find the home app.
it'll be in a .apk format
you can rename it to .zip and extract it.
the wallpaper will be somewhere in there
I use this picture as my background. I took it while in afghanistan.

THIS TEMPLATE IS NOT CORRECT!!!
Please use the template in the following thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=993596
Ok so I increased the original template by 50% and created another PSD for those that want to use higher resolution images.
The new visible resolution for each desktop is 1764x1028 and the overall image resolution is 2616x1920.
It should be noted that the desktop area is NOT in the center of the image as the bottom status bar pushes it up a bit.
thanks for this. The wallpaper isn't the same when honeycomb only shows a portion of the wallpaper

No problem!
I am not really sure if its really anything different then other Android versions. Its really just that Honeycomb is meant to be used in landscape and I dont think that the crop tool has been redesigned to compensate for that.
My other wallpapers on my Nexus S, Vibrant and G1 all look chopped when the phone is rotated to landscape as apposed to portrait. Its still odd that the centered resolution for each desktop is lower then the native resolution of the screen in both dimensions. Its making me wonder if the screen really is 1280x800 native resolution.
Either way the template above works and keeps things centered for us.
Awesome! Thanks, works perfectly so far.

Dumb question for you....do you select green layer and resize the image within the template to that and save the whole thing, or do you resize it to the green area and then create another file?
Think I figured it out

If you are using the large template then the Green area in the center is the area of the wallpaper that is visible on the default center desktop. The red areas to its side are what you will see if you scroll to the desktops left or right of center.
If you are using the colors only to center your images, then hold down CTRL+; to bring up the guides, which will make it easier for you.

You need photoshop to use the PSD in the zip file.
Here is a JPEG of the template, it will not contain the guides but you can still use the colored blocks.

Thanks..I have photoshop but I don't know how to use it..
What am i to do with this? What do i do then to get my own image onto the xoom??
Could someone please explain how to use this template?
thanks, works great
So I was kind of wondering why the native horizontal resolution of our screen is larger then my original template. I started playing around with the ddms.bat in the SDK and sure enough the native resolution of the screen capture was 1280 horizontal. So I knew my original template was wrong and this explains the small amount of blurriness when the wallpaper is applied.
After a bit more playing in photoshop with the screen caps from ddms and this lovely aspect ration tool, I give you all the proper Xoom Wallpaper template. Same as last time the PSD is attached in the zip file below.

I gave up on looking for the "perfect" templates because in the end all you are doing is producing an image that looks good ONLY in landscape or ONLY in portrait.
You should include what the images are going to look like in both modes, just for brevity.

Thats not really true. This would be the same issue on ANY android device it was used in landscape mode. The problem is that the Wallpaper crop tool is still setup for portrait use, thus we need a guide to make sure what we want visible shows correctly.
What I would really like to do is edit the crop tool to add in 4 additional guides that would show what portion of the image will show on the desktop. It would not be hard to do if I know what to edit.
xoom from Moto
I understand that. But what I do not get is releasing this OS for Xoom with so many quirks. I have worked in Android for phones for a couple years. I have worked with Moto in the past, and the combo Moto/Android is not a good combo on tablet. Moto still does not get the consumer.
Just my opinion. I like the xoom and that is why I am a bit frustrated. It was a chance to regain a bit of market share. But for a consumer iPAD(which I also have) the xoom is way too problematic.
Ok so I don't have photoshop but when I used this template with gimp...my images were still not fitting the screen properly
Just to explain what this does:
- The image portion of the wallpaper (almost) fits the screen perfectly.
- The top black bar only appears when in app drawer. That's why I a have "Applications" labeled there, so it appears in the background.
- The bottom black bar appears when in "+" or widgets view, which is the reason why I labeled it "Add-ons"
- The white all-around bar is the section that won't show up at all when using XoomWallpaper_2.zip
So here is a "template" I made in GIMP. I attached both the .xcf for GIMP and also the actual .png wallpaper for those who want to try it to see what it does.
EDIT: XoomWallpaper.zip is for larger images (eg. 1892x903) and XoomWallpaper_2.zip is for smaller images (eg. 1132x540)
PS: I use "wallpaper set and save" to set my wallpapers. So I don't need to crop the image.
Hi guys.. These are all formatted for the Nexus 7 but work just as good on the Nexus S as the aspect ratio is somewhat similar..
If you use any of these please thank me. It took a lot of time to crop my collection and separate them like I did and I will be updating these albums as my wallpaper collection grows.
Remember.. It's best to use these with Simple Image Wallpaper Free.. It's better then MultiPicture live wallpaper (imo) as it allows you to set a separate portrait picture and a landscape wallpaper and doesn't always have to reload the wallpaper randomly. Much lighter weight.
If using the beta Photobucket layout to download the full hi-res photo click "Options" at the top then download. Otherwise it's right click save as like always.

I was just getting started re-designing my homescreen layout for the 5 billionth time when I realized my pick of wallpaper that worked and looked right was slim. Too many times we "just deal with it" or hunt up and down for wallpaper that hopefully centers right. So instead of doing the typical Google hunt I went through my desktop wallpaper collection I have (over 200 wallpapers) and cropped out a ton of wallpaper to use with Simple Image Wallpaper or MultiPicture Live Wallpaper.
They are cropped for non-scrolling portrait only and meant to be used with either of the live wallpapers apps that fits wallpaper into the screen correctly.
So I figured I'd share them all with the community in the off chance anyone finds some useful.. Enjoy and if you find them useful give a thanks eh?

Hi guys... OP updated and some changes..
I moved on to the Nexus 7 as far as formatting wallpaper goes but as the OP says they display just as good on the Nexus S (I use them on it still myself) I moved to a gallery presentation instead of one huge zip file.. Let's you pick and choose what you want.. Enjoy!
BTW anyone who saw the original thread when it was one zip and just 93 portrait mode only wallpapers.. As you can see I have now supplied both cropped portrait and landscape versions of the same wallpaper.. 172 unique wallpapers now.. Or 344 total if you add Portrait and Landscape together.
