So I tried to flash Cognition 4.3.1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964583&highlight=cognition by going into recovery, and selecting the zip file, that i saved earlier on the internal sd card. started flashing. after all was done, i see on the screen, it said it was complete, and i cliked to reboot the device, and after it was black screen. i waited a minute, nothing. pressed pwr button, nothing. removed battery, sim, sd card, no power. tried usb plugged in, and holding vol +/- and pwer button, and then releasing pwr button when the battery gets in, no power at all. tried plugging the usb cable, and pressing vol +/- buttons, no power at all. I GET NO POWER INDICATION AT ALL. rigt before I flashed, i had 45% batt. And yes, there is power going through USB adapter.
To get into download mode you do this
Take battery, sim, ext sd out
Put battery back in
Hold volume up and down (no power)
Plug in usb

and keep the buttons held until after the screen comes on for 3 seconds

So you can't even get back into download mode via button/cable? I'd make a jig.
Grab a cheap cable
Cut off where the plug starts to dip in.
Expose prongs on plug
Grab a 301k ohm resistor (or 3 100's and a 1k)
Touch to pins 4 and 5 (2 right most pins) and hold until screen appears

Might want to try reinstalling your captivate drivers and then reboot your pc, then try to get to download mode again? Worked for me when I screwed up a gb flash

Chances are that you will need to use a JTAG or go for waranty. At this point, you seem pretty much hard bricked.

Trying to claim the froyo update might not work in his favor. They will probably interrogate cuz its a fairly simple process even with kies. And if they decide to investigate he could get charged. Jig will FORCE your phone into download mode unless your hardware is jacked in which case, contact Josh at mobile tech videos. He has an unbrick service for hard brick devices. But try jig first.

I had successfully tried a couple roms Inception1.2, Serendipity6.4,and Continuum5, but I know that I still am a noob. Wanting to update Continuum5, to v5 RC3 I attempted, as directed to update the kernel first, with ODIN using TalonDEV-0.1.2.tar. Initially connected to ODIN I placed the filename in the PDA box getting:
<ID:0/006> Odin v.3 engine (ID:6)..
<ID:0/006> File analysis..
<ID:0/006> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/006> Initialzation..
<ID:0/006> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/006> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/006> zImage
<ID:0/006> Removed!!
<ID:0/006> Complete(Write) operation failed.
Phone went black and Odin made no indication of progress. I touched both vol & power buttons but did not hold them long. All this before it signaled 'failure'.
Now the phone display only shows an image of a phone dot-linked to a PC with an exception triangle mid way. Am I hopelessly bricked?

That's commonly called a soft-brick. You can either build/buy a JIG or try multiple times to get in download mode pulling the battery, plugging the usb, holding both volume buttons and putting in the battery (don't release the volume buttons).
If the 2nd option doesn't work, you'll need a JIG.
Seems to be the common solution. I would just jig it like its the 70's

Hello.
I am trying to flash a rom using Odin, however I am stuck at this message all the time:
<ID:0/004> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
is there any reason why?
-Thank you
Disconnect and pull your battery. Put the battery back in. Start odin. Load your pit and pda files. Hold down both volume buttons and plug your usb cable back in. You should be back at "don't turn off target" but now you should have one of your boxes in odin filled in with com port info. Now push start you should be good to go.
I tried that before, but the order you gave me seem to have worked this time. Haha
Thank you!
I'm new to the captivate.. was going to flash a rom, following thru the instructions im at the point where im flashing back to stock rom with the odin3 oneclick downloader.. but its been just sitting at this for about 20 mins now...

Check your drivers and restart your computer is a good place to start

You have to quit ODIN. You aren't in download mode, or you haven't done everything in the correct steps. The page isn't very clear, so it's no problem
Here's what you have to do:
Turn your phone off.
Take out the battery, SIM card, External SD card
Put the battery back in.
Hold down both of the volume rockers.
THEN put in the USB cable (while ODIN is open)
Continue to hold down the volume rockers until your phone is recognized by ODIN
Hello, I was going back to stock from 2.2, just like I used to do, opened the good old odin and hitted start. It beggan as usual, printed:
<ID:0/016> Added!!
<ID:0/016> Odin v.3 engine (ID:16)..
<ID:0/016> File analysis..
<ID:0/016> Set PIT file..
<ID:0/016> DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
and it is being there for the last 5 minutes...
should i restart odin, the phone and try to do it all over again? or is it to late and I should be preparing myself to unbrick my phone?
thx in advance
As long as it's not on boot.bin or sbl.bin you SHOULD be "safe" to disconnect, reboot your computer and try again.
You seem fine. As long as it doesn't say that it's installing sbl.bin and boot.bin (not sure baout the 2nd). You can unplug and restart.
If it freezes at one the 2 above and you unplug, you phone will be bricked and the only way back will be a JTAG (force bootloaders in).
I suggest you use a different usb port/cable and even restart your computer.
EDIT: Damn you Studa
mmm I took out the phone and now i think it is soft bricked now, phone ! computer, though i just managed to put it back in download mode by holding the volume buttons and plugging in the cable, now it is back on stock

thread tag! you're it!
Code:
Odin v.3 engine (ID:24)..
File analysis..
Set PIT file..
DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!
This is exactly the state of my ODIN window when I was attempting to flash JF6 from the current Continuum 5 ROM.
Now, I have a phone that does nothing. The power button, volume buttom combo doesnt work it seems. Would a JIG help instead? Any opinions.
I am scared
If your phone exhibits no signs of life at all, Then you need to jtag unbrick your phone...
If you get the phone-!-computer thing on boot, you could just build/buy a jig and force it into download mode

Your phone could be soft bricked. I has a similar issue. You need to get the phone into download mode. If you can not do this via 3 button combo, you will need a jig. You can search xda for instructions on building your own jig (faster), or simply buy one. It may be cheaper to buy one.

Thanks,
The update is - I can do into download mode by pressing the volume down key and power key.
It gets into the yellow download mode, but ODIN3 doesn't work. It now gets stuck at "File Analysis"
Make sure the chord is good, and that is plugged into the back of the pc, not a front usb port. If it's already in the back go ahead and switch ports (still on the back) restart your computer.

Its a laptop am using, restarted 10 times. installed samsung usb drivers. tried all the ports. DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET on the phone and the laptop screen.
some times the laptop doesn't even recognise the USB device
All this had happened while flashing the stock jf6 rom
just wondering, are you doing it in the exact order of
1- put phone in download mode - via vol down/power
2- open odin on computer
3- connect usb cable to phone
4- Start button
and when you say sometimes your computer does no recognize your phone, does it show up in the device manager as an unrecognized device or just do nothing at all? If it does nothing at all half the time, go invest in a new usb cable.
i'm not sure how to fix it. but if you had continuum and want to go back to stock, i read somewhere that you can't use Odin3 (something about bootloaders).
i would try to use odin 1.7 to flash GR/Continuum rom.
(but check it with others cause i'm quite newbie)
my #g is not working after Odin3
i'm currently using the canadian rogers version of this phones i used odin3 cuz my phone blanked out on me my phone works now but i'm recieving any 3G network , any reasons as to y and how i can fix it thanx

He can use Odin one click, not the Odin with the button fix. FYI everytime you use Odin one click back to stock 2.1 you're flashing your bootloaders. The problem with the button fix is it only flashes the secondary bootloader leaving the primary bootloader untouched. This is only a problem if you've updated to the.GB bootloaders because you cannot mix Eclair/Froyo bootloader with a Gingerbread bootloader.

I'm trying to revert to stock jf6 with odin one click downloader from continuum 5 RC3, The phone was put in download mode with volume down+power combo and recognized fine, afer I clicked start it reads as follows:
<ID:0/005> Added!!
<ID:0/005> Odin v.3 engine (ID:5)..
<ID:0/005> File analysis..
<ID:0/005> Set PIT file..

And now it's stuck, (about 20 minutes as I'm writing)
Now the "DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET" frightens me, should I wait? I'm guessing it's not the safest thing to unplug it right now..
I've used odin before and never has it taken this long.
Help appreciated.
You have no choice but to unplug
Pull battery
Restart computer
Open odin
Get into dl mode
Try again

Dear All,
It's my first time converting from iPhones to Android. Happy to join this community to learn and share.
It was my first amateur experience flashing my Galaxy Note 9.
Basically, I flashed an incorrect file under BL at Odin after OEM Unlock. Phone was running Andriod 9 and it was a N960N (Korean Model)
I downloaded the BL file from another forum that was supposedly to be flashed inside TWRP.
I was stupid enough to change that zip file into a .tar file.
After a successful flash at BL, the phone seems to be bricked. It is unable to go into recovery or download mode.
Whenever I press power, the following message is prompted "KERNEL REV. CHECK FAIL DEVICE:3 BINARY: 2 (BOOT)
I was stupid. Please advise me. Could it be that the volume down button is faulty? I was having a hard time bringing it to download mode at the beginning. I used recovery mode to boot into download mode and then made this big mistake.
Any solution?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you for taking time to read and comment on my thread. Issue now is that the phone is unable to go into recovery and download mode. Not sure if its the problem physically with the volume down button but the phone is not detected by the PC and unable to enter recovery or download mode.
It is not able to be detected by Odin for me to flash stock files..

i saw that you went to download mode through recovery.
there is the regular way
to go into download mode...
hold vol down + bixby + power.
Using power + Bixby + vol down to enter download mode has never worked for me. Here's an alternative method:
Make sure the phone is off. Plug your cable into your computer, hold volume down + Bixby (do not touch the power button), and plug the other end of the cable in your phone while still holding the buttons.

The above combination (plug USB cable to PC, press and hold, vol down + bixby + power..... While still holding, plug in the USB cable to your phone) should actually work cause myself that's the only way i get my note 9 N960N into download mode. Try reinstalling Samsung drivers and possibly try changing the USB-C cable you're using.

vol down + bixby + power should work. you have to hold all three until the blue screen comes up.
it should not show the samsung splash screen.
start from fresh.
(make sure data cable is ok, try connecting any other phone to check the cable)
uninstall smartswitch and drivers then restart your pc.
again install latest version of smartswitch.
Run odin as administrator.
now plug one end of cable to pc.
press power+bixby+volume down key as soon as phone vibrates plugin data cable and release power key only. it should go in download mode. if not then try this.
plug cable in pc and phone. Then press power+volume down+bixby button as soon as phone vibrates release power key only. it should go in download mode.
