PSN Down "What are your thoughts?" - Off-topic

So by now we all now that PSN is down and im more than sure we have lots of gamers here on XDA, so my question to you is what are your personal thoughts on what happened? to be quite honest Im quite amazed at how slow the response time for Sony to realized that they were "hacked" and were pretty fast to pointing fingers at the hacker group Anon. I come from a background of conspiracy theories, reading alot about crap that might have happened might have not ya dig? so today i was reading that the dept of homeland security will be conducting an investigation too. i find that very crazy, I mean what if this is another attack at our human rights ie. patriot act and whatsoever things have gotten so tight that we cant talk about certain things or big brother will bust a cap on our ass lol...but yeah what if all this evolves into some sort of Internet something act, where by law we have to accept to some terms and conditions to the Law in order to use the net? but anyways hope to hear from you guys!

its ridiculous that a company like sony can BE hacked. but i dont really care. not *****in that much, just let down i cant play any games with my friends when we had off school, no big deal. itll come back soon enough and probably be even better (fingers crossed)

This happening to Sony is like getting hit in the face with a damn nuke. You didn't know it was coming.

I feel pissed at both Sony and the "hackers". Sony should have had better security in place, and the hackers now have my information probably in retaliation for Mr. EgoHot

I personally think they deserve this, just to show them not to store plaintext passwords in a database... That should be a salted hash, and the field should have DSA encryption...
Same for their entire database tbh, but unsalted and unhashed passwords are a complete no-no since like 1995
I think this is more a case of Sony's negligence here than anything else. Had their DB been secured to prevent external access properly, and had their tables used proper encryption, then this wouldn't likely be nearly so bad

I am sorry for all the playstation owners out there, they didn't do anything to have their online taken away, but I for one am happy that I can still hop on Live whenever I want this weekend.

On topic... Sony just emailed me, afaik theyre telling me my info has all been stolen, name adress etc but they cant confirm credit details have

PS3 Development

Hello all, I'm new here. Don't you just love seeing those 5 words?
Anyways, I own a PS3 and was wondering if anyone has or heard of a program that enables you to copy movies and games to the internal hard drive?
Basically giving you the ability to get rid of those cumbersome discs. I'm a moron, so please go easy on me. I've heard of one for the PS2. But that only enables games to be copied. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Its people like you, yes you, that put game devs and companies out of freaking business. PEOPLE LIKE YOU are the reason i cant play dead rising 2 with my friends because PSN is down. Its people like you that try to cheat everybody out of whats thiers. There are websites FOR the specific question youre asking. NOT XDA-Developers. We do NOT associate with warez, nor illegal copyright infringment. People like you that want everything but dont wanna fuc*** pay for it make me sick.
//end rant.

Wow... hit a nerve did I? I'm not interested in pirating anything.
I pay for my movies and games. I have also donated to several devs on this forum for their work and contributions.
I simply would like to take all of my discs and install them on my hard drive. I'm getting irritated with the wall of dvd boxes, and tired of the discs getting scratched and dirty.
To much maintenance if you ask me.
Even putting them in a disc logic binder is still negating the purpose.
However, I do agree... people that pirate cause all of the problems, and because of them the majority pays for their crimes.
I apologize for any misunderstanding. If I posted this on the wrong forum, delete it. I just thought, with the wealth of experience and knowledge, here would be a good spot to ask my question.

Nice to see you two kiss and make up. Now go get a room.
Back on topic (or off topic, let's not go there, shall we?), piracy is a major problem for a lot of people. I can't get access to cheap games, especially when a game could cost up to half a week's wage for me, and that's not even taking into account my living expenses.
You know the funny thing is, I had no idea about the PSN hack until 15 mins ago. One of the first stories on the news.
Why can't people just leave sh*t alone? Stop with the bs.
I understand that without hackers, we wouldn't have some of the stuff that we have. But come on! There's a line that people just shouldn't cross.

Actually I would blame Sony for all of this before GeoHot, if their security division would've been doing their jobs that I'm sure they're getting paid six figure salaries for, none of this would've happened, or at least the extremity of it. If Sony is offering a service that requires ppl credit card info, its their jobs to make damn sure the server where all this sensitive info is kept is 100% secure.

You blame sony for this!?! People make security systems. People arent perfect. Therefore neither are the security systems. Sony went after GeoHotz after he hacked the ps3 and made it possible to copy movies/games to the HD. This isnt sonys fault. Its the pricks that think they should get something for nothing.

You can't possibly be serious, that's like saying "Oh, I can break into your car so if I do it's your fault for not making the car indestructible." You can't blame Sony because their security isn't air tight. No one's security is air tight, there will almost always be a loophole.
-10 post limit for off-topic!-
yeah but sony's suing graf_chocolo as well! he did nothing related to piracy, he only wanted to restore a feature that was unrightfully taken from us: the other os feature. one of the two reasons I bought my ps3 was this feature, and sony just removes it "for security concerns?" furthermore, graf also stated that he would only turn it into a devs' thing or something, something that wouldn't be able to be used as an exploit for cfw whatsoever. i am against sony all the way - especially now that i know that they attempted to view our ip adresses for watching hotz's and graf's videos.....
Its not that hard to do and it doesnt take a special program, remember Google is your friend.

Flash mob robbery!!!

Just wanted to make sure everyone here is up to date on flash mob robberies, they are halarious, if you dont know about them yet check out you-tube and watch a few videos.
Basicaly the idea of a flash mob has turned from random bits of dance and entertainment to 50-100 people simotaniusley robbing/looting random corner stores and gas stations. I do not condone these acts (while I do think the videos are entertaining) and thought others may like to share opinions on this, so what do you guys think? I say its not long before a store owner pulls a weapon on these fools and we see mass casualties in a 7-11, how else are they gonna defend themselves against such a thing?
Is this happening in other counties or is this more of a U.S. based thing as of yet?
Please share which vidoes you find the most entertaining!!!!
(video for those unfamiliar)
I don't find anything remotely funny about small business owners being robbed by gangs of morons who deserve nothing more than being put against a wall and shot, one after the other, in the knee-caps.
I hope somebody does exactly that. On camera. Perhaps THEN i will laugh.

Sorry I still see the entertainment value in these videos (big fan of worlds dumbest lol). However I believe we are on the same page, that the next progression is going to be a store owner shooting at these groups of wild teens looting there store, untill than whats stopping them? The thought process must be "they cant catch all of us" I guess, but im not sure why nobodys wearing masks, idiots must not understand that there are cameras almost everywhere. Imagine if you were a cop and were first on scene to one of these calls best bet might be to baragade your cruiser against the door and lock them all in untill backup arrives, however that locks the loanly clerk and any possible legit patrons inside as posible hostages. Could you imagine going in to pay for gas or buy some smokes and 50+ kids run in and start looting the place!

Yeah. Great, some store owner shoots one and the rest beat him to death...
That's entertainment alright..........
As someone who very regularly has to deal with the kind of moron who thinks its acceptable to steal from and threaten those who work in customer service I do not find this remotely funny.
I see, all too often just how badly the people that do these jobs can be affected by even a minor incident and something such as this could have serious repercussions on the life of a completely innocent person who is not insured against any loss or injury and will receive nothing in compensation should they find themselves unable to work afterwards.
By simply reposting these videos you are glorifying these acts and only inciting more of this kind of action by the type of mindless cretins who make life difficult for those of us who work hard to earn a living.

Meh... understood. I did actually find myslef wondering why such videos remain on youtube, thinking along the same lines that actually seeing such a video would only insight further flash mob robberies sparking the mind of wasted youth. However that is enough self reflection into myself and will be reserved for another day when I feel more like looking back onto things I may or may not have done, that may or may not have been the "best choices"
I started this thread in thoughts of conversation and nothing more, please do not mistake this as approval to such acts

It's OK, you did call them fools after all, and you do raise the point that it won't be long before it turns really ugly, i.e, loss of life ugly. Had anybody thought you were glorifying the acts the thread would be closed by now!
As CTM said, these things can only go south. The robbers come with knives, so owners buy guns and before long the robbers have guns. It's exactly what's happened in the USA, and as much as the gun advocates, i.e NRA members, defend their position.. it's completely illogical. The argument is cyclical. You defend your home with a BB Bat, robbers bring knives. You buy a knife, robbers bring guns. You buy a gun and before long your kid has accidentally shot himself to death.
The arguments go back and forth while the only clear and logical answer is to smelt every single fkin gun in existence. Fortunately it's the one thing the UK government here at home has gotten right.
The only guns should belong to the Army and Specialist Police forces. Beyond that, they shouldn't even be made. The only reason these cocky little ****es think they can get away with robbing innocent people is because most people are too sensible to start an arms race where nobody wins. And most people are too decent to shoot somebody, even when they themselves are being robbed.
Personally, i have no such reservations. I would kill each and every one of the bastards given the chance. Which is exactly why we have gun control here!

I would swing like Babe Ruth if i thought a direct hit would save the life of someone i loved!
Tony Martin was jailed because we don't have the 'Castle doctrine' in this country. The biggest mistake he made wasn't to open fire on the assholes who tried to rob him. It was missing, and then not burying the bodies that messed up his life!

It's the law that you have in the US that say's you have the right to protect yourself in your own home, against those that would trespass or do harm against you on your property.
Somebody breaks into your home and you shoot them? Their fault!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_doctrine
Sadly even this can lead to f**k ups of epic proportions. Take for instance new US laws that allow for entry to a property by law enforcement without the need for a warrant, or for announcing "Police..come out with your hands up..."
Tragically, a recent case highlighted the flaws in this. Police went to an ex-Marines house, on false evidence that he was supplying drugs. Rather than knock on the door they tried to break it down. He thought that his home was being invaded, so to protect his family to picked up his rifle and opened fire on the 'intruders'. He was shot forty times.
What would you have done?
If neither he, or the police were packing guns, everyone would have lived!

That's what I thought you were referring to, and yes it is an epic fail, no matter how "justified" you are I doubt it's ever worth it. I have a friend who shot and killed an intruder, no charges ever filled however I know he well never be the same. Partially in a good way as his life wasn't always on the up and up and has since in ways changed for the better for both him and his family, but we'll never be the same.

These videos and the acts portrayed within are just terrible. I for one believe we need more small "mom and pop" stores, not less. Acts like these can very well cause someone innocent to be hurt (the morons doing these things NEED to be hurt....but I digress....) and drive these small stores out of business. Terrible, just terrible.

+ for this option. I am waiting on sideline until this issue is resolved. I am happy to keep my aria running latest cm7 nightly.
In spirit, AT&T lost me many years ago. The only reason why I'm still with them is because of my corporate policy and them not allowing me to switch to Verizon.
Believe me, if I could, I would in a heartbeat.
I will continue with AT&T.
Have you called their tech support lately? They fixed my tethering, visual cm and sms provisioning and called back the next day to ensure it was fixed.
CIQ doesn't bother me. This is a work phone. Work already has the right to monitor me. They purchased the phone and pay for the plan.

You've got to be kidding me. You're calling us whiners and not doers? Have you even been following this forum at all? Of course we have called tech support!
And this all makes sense now. The reasons you're defending them. "CIQ doesn't bother me." "It works for me and doesn't harm me" You're just selfish. Do you realize how many people are affected by CIQ? Chances are someone you know or even a family member is affected. Your "you agreed to terms" argument doesn't apply here like you tried to use in another thread. CIQ is doing things without our consent or permission! This isn't about just what affects "ME". This is about all of us and how we're being affected. Everyone has a different lifestyle and most of us don't have "work Vivids".
You don't want to participate in what we're trying to do, then don't. Want to stay with AT&T? Cool. But what's the point of trolling here? As long as we know now that you've been exposed as a selfish troll, No one really cares what you have to say.

And that's the issue. We HAD to be told that we were being monitored. So before it causes any real damage, it needs to be stopped. Just think if someone figured out that the PSN had an exploit before the the attack went down. We have the opportunity to do things we couldn't in other situations.
Until they kick me off my unlimited plan I will stay loyal. This whole Vivid situation was perfect timing in my mind. Was able to get the phone for $25 no contract so I kept it a few weeks waiting out the locked bootloader issue. Seeing that it may take awhile I sold the Vivid for $300 and bought a Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ and couldn't be happier.
Everyone, step back. OP, don't ask for opinions then complain you don't like some of those opinions. WillGill, that's pretty rude calling folks trying to do something "whiners". Which is what you did.
I believe it's important for people to shout it out when Big Brother starts to over reach. I appreciate the efforts of many here to expose and Kill CarrierIQ.
We live in a society that is becoming increasingly corrupt. Congress has made many forms of bribery completely legal, so that they can try and pretend that they're still the good guys. For the first time in history, Congress has been completely bought and paid for by those wishing to bend the system to their own selfish concerns. At the same time, the Internet has made it possible--for the first time in history--for the masses to become fully informed and fight this attack on our society.
The occupy movement is a good example of people coming together to fight terrible changes in our society, and this movement is fueled by information available on the Internet. Unfortunately, Occupy has failed miserably. If they've done anything, they've helped those people they're trying to fight. It's really too bad, they could have had a major impact had they targeted those people that actually could change the system--Congress.
We no longer hold politicians accountable for their corruption and the damage they've done to the system. We blindly accept whatever they've got to say, as long as they support a few pet causes we hold dear. Liberals--by and large--support Democrats, regardless of how huge the bribes they take are. Look at Nancy Pelosi: almost universally adored among the liberals and yet crooked beyond belief. Oh, that's right, she's not crooked. Congress has made it legal for her to accept bribes so large that they're unprecedented in history. And don't be smug conservatives, the Republicans are no better. Both sides are laughing all the way to the bank, whilst we cling to a few small issues that we feel differentiates liberals and conservatives.
As you rail against CarrierIQ, please don't forget who's sitting back and doing nothing even though they're vested with the responsibility to defend our privacy and our freedom. It's time we held congress's feet to the fire, regardless if we consider ourselves liberal or conservative. When you vote, look past whether a candidate is liberal or conservative. If they're honest, it will all work itself out. Cry out for candidates who are honest, who will fight CarrierIQ and every such intrusion into our lives. Don't accept corruption.
Nakel, you may have missed my point. All this ranting and raving without fact checking and knowing legal rights is just whining. Instead, I recommend true action.
Occupiers, by definition, are just taking up space. They change nothing other than kill park grass, leave filth, not to mention the rapes, drug deaths and deficating on cop cars. And no... I'm not making that up. Google it. That's the wrong message.
Actually what I see missing is personal responsibility.
Expect only what you pay for but feel free to negotiate more.
Know what your rights, not what you feel is "right".
Know your facts before you speak. (Like 85% of millionaires didn't inherit it)
Contribute to a true difference, not a scene.
My apologies for getting a bit OT. I would just like to be a voice of caution. Let's be sure we know if and who the dragon is before trying to vanquish it.

I am with you, willgill, though I have no desire to argue or reason with "grab your pitchforks and torches" mob. I do find it curious however, that this mob's anger is rather selective. They get all worked up over CIQ yet say absolutely nothing about legalized rape that is SMS fees. They worry about a cell phone watching their every step while they are already being watched and tracked, EVERYWHERE. Your ISP already monitors your web traffic. Your bank already monitors your transactions. Your supermarket, gas station, restaurant already watch you like a hawk. Your cable and satellite provides and TV networks already watch you watching TV. Every time you input a pin code in ATM, click on TV remote, write an email - you are being watched and recorded.
So relax and sleep well tonight, my fellow xda'ers. Big Brother is not only watching you; he's also watching over you. If you wish to stick with your fears and superstitions, be my guest, but please do wear a tinfoil hat while you're outside, so I can identify and avoid you.
Intriguing commentary and food for thought.
"IF" CIQ is logging your SMS, would the same people incensed by that also be livid if their cell company couldn't retrieve their texts logs for evidence in a court case?
I've seen several court cases where text message records were admitted as evidence. So people want texts archived if it benefits them but on the other hand NOT recorded?

Just found out...

that my wife is having an affair. I can't tell my family, friends, or co-workers because they all know her and I'm trying to keep things normal for my kids. So I thought I would tell a bunch of near-strangers instead because I have to tell SOMEBODY! I'm ok, not going to do anything crazy or stupid, I just wanted to get it off my chest.
You should get her drunk and drop her off in the ghetto

Wrong forum I know, but i'm sorry to hear about your wife. Are you absolutely sure? Someone close to me told his best friend his girl was cheating (lie) so he could be the one to comfort her and become her new guy...it worked. Be sure...btw do you still love her?

Naw, I'm sure. I don't normally do this, but I felt like something was up, so I snooped her FB. Found a convo between her and this guy talking about their feelings for each other. She might not be banging him, but feelings are maybe worse.
I couldn't ever let my kids know anything - my parents used me and my sisters as weapons in their divorce, I won't do it.
I believe that you have to take some ownership if your significant other cheats - People cheat because they have a need that isn't being met. So I take some responsibility. It still feels a little like being punched in the stomach.

Yes people do cheat cause they are missing something from the relationship, but that isn't your fault. If there was something wrong with your relationship it was both duty to sit and talk about it or maybe search for council. If there wasn't nothing wrong with the two of you, then it's her entire fault, and once again she had the duty to sit and talk with you about it.
And piece of advice, don't just patronize cause of the kids, it will be mush worse. Go to her, talk with her and explain what you just found out. After that both of you make a decision. In case of divorce, at least try to make it the most friendly as possible...
I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through...
I'm a very jealous man and even non issue things drive me insane.
Obviously you can't deal and live with her doing this and be a normal family forever... Take it one day at a time and think it through.
Maybe go see a Counselor or something to talk, many local counties have a department of health and human services where most services are free or low cost where they don't charge you to start and bill you according to your income.
It's very private and uplifting.
. I used them for aoda for some personal issues I had. If you need anyone to talk to, you can pm me.
Also if you have some type of cash or homes /property, please start checking out divorce attorneys and only attorneys that specialize in divorce, preferably a male firm.

Also I found some things my gf lied to me about to my face multiple times about her past in her Facebook and when confronted months later after a long night together at the bar she still denied it until I said I saw it in her Facebook and the next thing was why are you going through my **** lol
It shouldn't of been a issue because it was her past but I knew she was lying and that was my issue.
Anyways sadly Facebook and other social networking is making this type of behavior easier.

also in some states like Indiana and Colorado adultery is illegal
On the books
Excerpts from state adultery laws:
South Carolina: “Any man or woman who shall be guilty of the crime of adultery or fornication shall be liable to indictment and, on conviction, shall be severally punished by a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $500 or imprisonment for not less than six months nor more than one year or by both fine and imprisonment, at the discretion of the court. ...‘Adultery’ is the living together and carnal intercourse with each other or habitual carnal intercourse with each other without living together of a man and woman when either is lawfully married to some other person.”
Minnesota: “When a married woman has sexual intercourse with a man other than her husband, whether married or not, both are guilty of adultery and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than one year or to payment of a fine of not more than $3,000, or both.”
North Carolina: “Fornication and adultery. If any man and woman, not being married to each other, shall lewdly and lasciviously associate, bed and cohabit together, they shall be guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor: Provided, that the admissions or confessions of one shall not be received in evidence against the other.”
New Hampshire: “A person is guilty of a class B misdemeanor if, being a married person, he engages in sexual intercourse with another not his spouse or, being unmarried, engages in sexual intercourse with another known by him to be married.”

The laws differ in each state and it's a real Grey area.
How do we know she didn't leave her fb open?
Some states allow call recording in court with only one party knowing.
. I believe in a relationship, let alone marriage, that everything should be open, accessible and on the table. but everyone is different.
. I personally would start some spy stuff. There are apps in the play store that secretly install and forward all texts received and sent and if it's your bill and your name on the account its legal.
It's your life and future, along with your children's lives at stake.
Need more information pm me for the app names.
Gps trackers are small and magnetic and are easily hidden.
If it's your car It's also legal.
It's your life.

Sensitive guy strikes again. These online douchebags talk to and act like they care about ur wife's feelings, then talk em into some crazy affair. Then leaves her high n dry and she realizes she should be with you, for the kids. Put her out, dude, there's tons more that value family and true love more than she apparently does. Hasn't happened to me, but ive had some friends fall prey to "sensitive guy". But, you cant just blame him cud it takes em both to start it. Put her out while u still have some sanity. You'll feel great about it.

,, I also to fell prey to the quote unquote sensitive guy with my ex 4 years when we were having problems he would swoop in and act like he was caring, listening and whatever. She left and moved out of my place, when she tried to come back and I wasn't having it she was devastated, but I told her now she knew how I felt that entire week and what I did wrong, but it was nothing about me. What goes around comes back around.

Things are not so easy as you guys put it. Yes it's a ****ed up situation, yes he has all rights to feel bad about it, but by no means he should loose his temper.
If it was me, I would pickup my things and move to a motel our something like that followed by an attorney visit to take care of the divorce. Thing is, there's kids involved, kids that I'm sure he loves. He must do things right to get the best for him and for his kids.
It's easy to talk when we are single, cause we can do pretty much what we want and send the consequences to the hell, not so much when we are married

Yeah I definitely didn't say to do anything related to revenge or anger.
Just advised that he should get more proof and be 150% sure before he says anything. Then if is true, then go get that attorney to get all your affairs in order before the confrontation.
Also OP, I know this is none of our business, but has your relationship with her changed at all recently or anything? What about sex life? Is it the same? Worse?
Is she going out more, working "longer hours", or just acting suspicious?

Well Done Apple

###
reading the story, within the first paragraph, i can see that 90% of the problem was this guy's fault, not apples. he had an entire year, of his daughters life, not backed up? being a father of 3, 99.9% of what i take pictures of are my kids. i have my phone instant upload to my google account, i also copy all pics weekly from my phone to my media server, which makes redundant copies, these copies are then imaged to a 3 resource. not sure why this guy went a year without backing anything up.
this guy also has no real idea as to what he's talking about. apple forcing you to use icoud? google already a cloud based os? you only have to use the cloud if you choose to. apple and google know that if they try to force people into cloud based operating, they would lose most of their business oriented users, and those without unlimited data plans.
You're right about the GPS on the SGS1, it sucks!
I know! Why would they even do something like that?

I suppose you got a point.
Did you read the part about the internal policies? I suppose it's some of the employees fault, not entirely Apple. But still, not everyone has a media server, lol.
Screw you Clan vv3 and Phobia. Hope someone messes up your lives one day.
Sounds like massive failures all around. Certainly foolish not to create backups, but also horrible policies and actions on the part of Amazon and Apple.
I agree with you. That many photos, the should of been backed up. At least he admitted beforehand that on his part most things were wrong. But then come Apple and Amazon, who clearly have more power over security, but simply failed to to stop this hacking. Doesn't really count that much of a "hacking" if Apple/Amazon let them get that info nice and easy. But and the end of the day, it was the criminals fault. Same goes for the scrib who stole my phone.
Dude obviously has issues if he didn't care that he destroyed all that just to hack someone's Twitter. Odds are they'll brag about it to the wrong person and get dimed out.

We totally understand where you're coming from, but the fact is, not EVERYONE has the knowledge of computers that some of us do, and not EVERYONE knows how to back-up their files. This could happen to the regular joe-schmo who just has a computer to communicate with their family relatives over facebook or twitter or whatever and also buy **** off amazon. BOOM and it just so happens that some person takes your information and takes everything you have and you really cant do anything.
this guy might've been a technology journalist but he was clearly dumb enough not to back up any of his stuff and to chain all your stuff together? come on...

The thing about hackers is that they've got potential, but they just don't want to use it.
