OK- so i extract this framework-res.apk file in the rom, and i change a few of the icons, and now clearly it's time to save the changes in the framework-re.apk form, but HOW?!?!?!
and that..............^ is the question. how to compress an extracted apk file back?
Use 7-zip or WinRAR.

Which file and apk do I need to edit in order to change the icon that shows in the launcher. I know to change the messaging icon is in the mms.apk but I can find the apk to edit to change the phone icon. I edited the phone.apk but the icon hasn't changed.
DialerTabActivity.apk, I think.

Hi, I have a newbie question. I want to change the stock messaging icon in my phone. I already found the apk and the .png file. I read that I could change the icon by:
1. copying apk file to desktop
2. renaming the apk file to zip
3. changing the stock icon with the icon of my choice
4. renaming the zip file back to apk file
Then what? should I just copy the new apk file back to the directory where I found it? Please help. Thanks.

Double click the new zip file to view the contents. Do not extract it. Just replace the file in the zip interface. Then change the extension back to apk, copy it back to your phone, reboot, and profit.

Awesome. I finally got it to work. Thank you so much!
recently i tried to replace the kernel that came with a version of Phoenix with an updated kernel before flashing, but it did not work out. I simply extracted the original, replaced the zimage, and created a new zip file with the new kernel in the rom, using windows to package the zip. is this what i should do, or is it more complex than this? the flash failed.
Don't extract the rom zip. Use 7zip or similar and open archive, delete the zimage then drag the other kernel zimage in there. Or just flash the rom as is and then flash the kernel.

thanks! that makes sense. can i just do what you said using windows explorer?
7zip is free and handles many more file extension types.
Install it then right click on the file in windows explorer, select 7 zip, then open archive. This allows you to make changes without actually extracting the entire file.

so when i double click on a zip file in windows explorer, and it opens it as if it were just another folder, can i not replace stuff directly in windows explorer where im at?
That extracts everything and you may have issues after zipping it back up

in windows explorer, you can right click and select extract files, but when you double click the zip it appears that it is allowing you to edit the contents without completely unzipping. am i wrong in thinking this?
Perhaps you can do it that way......i just always used 7zip. You will have to try it and see.

alright, thanks bud =D
I am using winzip. When I right click the zip file it gives me the option to "open" with winzip. When I do it shows me files like windows does. So my question is can I use winzip to replace the file and then close it?
winzip works as well
I followed the thread here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960280
and dont understand this step!! the framework-res.apk is in ".apk" format, and 7zip, powerarchive, winrar wont let me put "resources.arsc" in the apk file.
If I rename it to framework-res.zip and put it in there as "store, not compress" it will let me, and all I have to do is rename it back to apk file, but it wont work when i flash it with odin, just keeps looping in the booting screen.
Does anyone know how to solve this or properly put "resources.arsc" as "storing, not compressing in the framework-res.apk file" ?? Thanks guys!!
13. Next, right click the resources.arsc and select Add to archive from the 7zip option.
14. Make sure your option is to store (not compressed) and click on the ... icon to select the file, in this case is the unsignedframework-res.apk. This method of doing is to ensure that your resources.arsc is changed from compressed format to store format (no compression).
Is there anyway to extract icons out of them if not?
You have to be on miui to /use/ it, but otherwise it is simply a zip. Change the file name to .zip if you need to, and pop it open.
extracting it worked but the icons are a Unix executable file...how to you get the icons out of this file?
Wha?
Um...
Oh, right. Probably a new format .mtz
Change the icons to .zip aswell, and any other folder you want to open too.
I just extracted one too, but the icon file is not a mtz. Any thoughts?
just rename icons to icons.zip and extract
Im using 7zip and take the png and icon and convert to cm7 themes
