Ok first of all, nice guide. I love the screen shots
Second, i suggest adding a download link for your files like the Cyanogen rom.
For the first, screenshot, you should have the rom be in the root of your sd card shown that its not in any folder or w/e...
You should also add links for downloading the Hard SPL and the OTA Radio found on the HTC website.
For formating the SD CArd, make sure your clearly state that its for 1 GB only and where to find how to format other sized sd cards.
Basically, the only thing you are REALLY missing are the links to download the files.
Last, thanks for the credit . This is a very good guide. Keep it up
Thanks for the nod in the credit section. It's nice to know that some people we help just don't take their answer and run but rather give back to the community like you did.
Even though this guide is very specific, I am sure it will help people. It's is neat, organized, well written, and the screen shots are very n00b friendly.
Great job, and welcome!
Edit: I did notice a small error...your links to the recovery flasher app are not links but just words. Seems like you forgot the hyperlink....
Did not realize hyperlinks were missing. I did this on word and i had all the links sorry.
And i mention you two cause i couldnt have done it without you.

Agreed.
On step 31, you really need to mention 2 things.
1- your "noob friend" really needs a bigger/faster sd card
2- he needs to make sure and put the parameters of his card (it may be 996, not 999)
But yeah, good guide overall.
Step 9 says to use "apply update.zip" but you didn't tell them to rename it to that. With no previous knowlege they won't know and might be scared to try the "apply any zip from sd" option.
Other then that guide looks pretty thorough and done well.

Word... just change the guide so that they use the next option to flash any .zip. You can also just have them download and copy all three files at once in the beginning, in the interest of efficiency, and flash one after the other.

Tell me what happens when you press home + power then alt + l when the screen comes up. .. and when that screen comes up does the g1 screen come up first? Cuz I think otherwise it might be a guaranteed brick :/
okay i gott itt to go to the menu. but i try to apply the v4.2.1 and it always aborts it =/
Try the Q&A forum next time.
I go to the menu. flash the 1.6 recovery image. Change Cyanogen to update. Try to flash it but it gets aborted
don't know about cy updates but it sounds like your may have a bad file. Have you installed this update before using the "same file"? if not you may try just redownloading the update.
really neeed helpp with this. Tried installing the v4.1.9999 and it still aborts
bummer. I'm not sure what all the prerequisites are for cy mods.. Hopefully someone else can jump in here to help ya :/
Think he may have aborted installation during the radio flash portion of the HTC archive.

That's not exactly the way it went for me the 2X I've done this, so maybe this is what happened...IDK?
I've had to reboot manually (Home+back) out of recovery following phase 1 of the flash to initiate the start the Radio flash portion. This may confuse some as it's not listed as a step.
Just to be sure, place fresh copies of dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip and cm4.2.1 in /sdcard prior to doing this. Use an external card reader if necessary.
1. Get into recovery
2. Wipe (optional but recommended, problems=include step 2)
3. Flash dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip
4. If phone does not reboot automatically, reboot manually (Home+back) out of recovery and release buttons immediately
5. Let Radio flash (you see the image of the box with the arrow and the eprom chip)
6. Wait for screen to go completely black then hold "Home" button until it reboots back to recovery console.
7. Flash CM4.2.1
I noticed 4.2.1 took an unusually long time to load on initial boot, so be patient.
If this has nothing to do with your issue, sorry for wasting your time. Hopefully this helps somebody eventually.

There are 2 things you could do, use cyans file, and make sure you flash the HTC image first, as his update file is a partial update without the google experience (read apps)
This is taken from Cyans OP in his thread and edited for you, please follow the instructions properly.
Note: You need cyanogens recovery image 1.4 or better for this process, as it lets you chose files named other than update.zip
Install instructions for an HTC Dream/ADP1/G1:
1- Perform a Backup......nandroid, etc (ignore since i don't suppose you have anything to backup at this moment)
2- Download: http://developer.htc.com/adp.html#s3 Android 1.6 Recovery Image. This isn't the type of recovery image we know. It's HTCs version of an update.zip
3- Download cyanogens ROM. http://n0rp.chemlab.org/android/update-cm-4.2.1-signed.zip
4- Mount your phone and place BOTH 1.6 Image and cyanogens ROM on your SD Card.
5- Reboot into recovery mode *Home+Power*
6- WIPE!!!! This will allow google apps to function, correctly.
7- Apply sdcard:choose zip *PICK dream_devphone_userdebug-ota-14721.zip* from the list
ALLOW IT TO INSTALL FIRST.....you will see the "unbox" image.........then it will automatically reboot HOLD HOME button while it reboots.
(ITS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU HOLD THE HOME BUTTON, BECAUSE IF IT THE HTC ROM BOOTS, YOU WILL HAVE TO RE-ROOT YOUR PHONE)
8- Apply sdcard:choose zip *Pick cm-4.2.1-signed.zip* from the list.
9- Reboot!
OR
download daveid's full update from http://www.megaupload.com/?d=80FXE36J or http://www.mediafire.com/?dnljdtndwnv
and just flash normally.
Oh and to mount your sd card to transfer the rom images to it from your computer when in recovery (Alt-X), use this command (in recovery, on your phone)
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
Finally, as someone else mentioned, please post in the right section.
how did u get ur phone to go back to the menu because the same thing happened to me
Sorry for may bad english !
I have the same problem. After flash rom OTA 1.6 of HTC, now i lose the recovery cm-1.4.

When boot in recovery, it look like before hack root, we can't update the other file, exception "update.zip".
When i type "su" in terminal, it return "permission denied".
-I tried to update another rom but i didn't run.
-I tried to flash another recovery by Fastboot but not success.
-I tried to flash another SPL but not success.
-The last hope, i tried to re-hack root by DREAIMG.nbh but not success too.
Okay I had the same problem and know how to fix it.
1. Download 1.5 Cupcake here
2. Copy the file to the root of your SD and name it Update.zip
3. Boot recovery and press Alt + S to install Cupcake
4. Now that you`ve got Cupcake download Flashrec here
5. Make sure that you allow installing non market programs on your phone.
6. Open Flashrec after installing it and click backup recovery!! VERY IMPORTANT, didn`t do it the first time and it didn`t work.
7. After backup is finished you download the recovery given by the program
8. When the download is complete you select flash recovery.
9. Reboot, and flash your Custom Firmware again.
IMPORTANT!: All of the 1 click rooting procedures are putting the Flashrec.apk file and a recovery image on the SD card, installing Flashrec and then using it to flash the new recovery image. You WILL NOT have internal root access after this procedure (it only allows us external root access from recovery)
10. I installed the full version of 4.2.1 which was linked on the previous page of this thread, and it installed the right radio, spl and hboot.
So everything is normal again, thank god. Ow after i installed the full version of 4.2.1 it didn`t work but i had the recovery back and root so i installed the oldskool 4.1.1.1 and it works.
Good luck and this took me 5 hours to find out!

[Possible solution]
Instead of safely remove on PC, use 'Disconnect' option from CWM recovery
If you have already used 'Safely remove' option from PC then,
In terminal issue following commands
Code:
[SIZE=2]adb shell[/SIZE][SIZE=2]
# echo 0 > /sys/class/usb_composite/usb_mass_storage/enable[/SIZE][SIZE=2]
# echo 1 > /sys/class/usb_composite/usb_mass_storage/enable[/SIZE]

Extra info
Few advantages that I can think of for having
[ADB support in recovery]
As in recovery mode you get SU access, whether your phone is rooted or not, you can issue root level commands like mount, chmod, chown, fdisk
You can read, write to, move, modify, replace any system files (at your own risk)
Many more possible features which you can find by exploring this forum.
[USB support in recovery]
If you are playing with trying out new boot.img, boot-animation.img, splash.img which you are developing side by side, this will prevent all the hassle for rebooting phone just for adding new updated files to sd card (that you have just created)
Though you can use adb push feature in recovery, but I prefer copy / paste using computer as it checks for complete file transfer before ejecting the drive

I am not to be held responsible for any damage to your phone after following this post.

thanks adding CWM to this phone is the easiest i have done it was real pain doing it on my other phones
now my question is i have added CWM and i have taken a nand back up of the original Stock rom if i wana go back to the orignal for some warranty purpose in the future
if i do this is it ok
1.do a nand restore with CWM
2.go to down load mode & replace the CWM recovery with the original phones recovery which i have saved on my PC
is this good enough just in case i need to give phone to service for warranty purpose
thanks in advacne

Yes, that will surely do!
Also, as paarkhi has suggested you could also flash original Spice Gingerbread Update file ("nb0" file) using SUTL, since "nb0" files have all original files (bootanimation.zip, recovery.img, boot.img-which includes original kernel) and your phone is already registered for Spice Gingerbread upgrade.
[Though this is single step - easy option but it requires PC, I have one more option which you could use if your on the go and PC is not accessible]
I have posted steps to restore stock recovery at Restoring Recovery - An easy way (CWM / Stock)
and then you can flash any original "nb0" file.

[Possible solution]
Instead of safely remove on PC, use 'Disconnect' option from CWM recovery
If you have already used 'Safely remove' option from PC then,
In terminal issue following commands
Code:
[SIZE=2]adb shell[/SIZE][SIZE=2]
# echo 0 > /sys/class/usb_composite/usb_mass_storage/enable[/SIZE][SIZE=2]
# echo 1 > /sys/class/usb_composite/usb_mass_storage/enable[/SIZE]

Don't let the word Linux scare you, this is just a cd you burn, nothing installs to your pc. Once you burn this CD you are ready to SBF flash anywhere you have a computer, no net connection needed to download any files.
This is an .iso file. It is a complete Linux operating system that you will download, burn to CD (or USB) then boot your pc from CD or USB, this allows your pc to reboot into a different operating system.

if cd/usb flash drive is made correctly you will not have Droid_X_621-ezSBF-and-RootCD.iso or Droid2_D2G_DX_DX2-RootCD-2012.iso on cd
you will have a folder named 'Boot'
with two files and a folder in the boot folder
usb flash drive may have a few more files
Hit enter at the yellow "boot baby... boot" screen
You will see yellow dots for 1-3 minutes then the script will start

don't use numbers on right side of your keyboard, just use the ones above qwerty
select flash sbf only if phone is not working correct or you do not have 621 on phone yet

select root DX
follow onscreen directions
turn phone on, connect to pc with usb cable
check usb debugging (settings/apps/development)
select charge only usb mode in top status bar

manually reboot phone to bootloader (Hold volume up+down buttons and power button, or hold Vol.Down and Camera and wait for the screen to flash)
program will will be flash repacked sbf (less than 50mb)
Program will reboot phone twice, very important (reboot just replaces the local.prop, but the old local.prop is still in memory, till second reboot)
adb pushes su,superuser, and busybox
program will reboot to recovery,
manually wipe cache (should auto reboot to recovery, at android andy press both volume buttons, if it doesn't press home button and hold it in then press your power button, hold it in also till you see a triangle on the screen w/ android andy then press both volume buttons)

that is fine, it will still work

Since all these devices (Droid 2/R2D2/D2G/DX2 and DX seem to be vulnerable to the same exploit found by phifc at
http://rootzwiki.com...nd-droid2-r2d2/
I have assembled rooting methods for all of them in EzSbf style CD. I have tested it on my D2G, and the same method has been tested by multiple users on the D2/R2D2, and has worked fine.
Credit for this method go to phifc, djrbliss, and the others who developed the method.
I have simply taken the method, and assembled the tools.
Credit for the idea behind the CD method should go to 1KDS, as I have mostly patterned this CD after his method.
Credit should also go to Skrilax_CZ, as without his Motorola Android Firmware (De)packer, we wouldn't be able to have a 55 meg CD that covers multiple devices.
Special thanks also to themib for testing and troubleshooting on the DroidX2. In fact, since I don't have a DX2, he actually did a majority of the work in finding a method that would work (the method for the D2 and D2G doesn't quite work), and then we worked together to get it assembled and working.
This CD is for the D2,R2D2, D2G, and DX on Android version 2.3.4, and the DX2 on 2.3.5.
One note if you have troubles with it not working. It might be necessary to disconnect the phone after it flashes the preinstall and reboots. It seems that some phones may not complete the reboot process before being rebooted by ADB, so you may need to disconnect the phone when it starts booting, and let it boot fully before hooking it back up. when hooked back up, it will be rebooted, and should go on with the process like normal.
Of course, like all other things here, I have done my best on this, but there are no guarantees, and anything you do on your phone is at your own risk.

Thank you for this by the way. I pulled my DX out of retirement to try CM11 and not everything went as planned. I remembered I had an old sbf disk tried that it turned out to be 605 which of course resulted in a bootlader error. I was able to use 621 restore and root to recover from disaster. :highfive:

I made it .
Your recovery won't work, I managed to solve your vbmeta issue but it reboots to bootloader.
I built one from source and it still doesn't boot, even though I'm trying to fix that.
Maybe we will get a working recovery soon
It works now.

I mixed it from s20 and a80 twrp and we don't need to type any command to mount system. Vendor and other partitions can mounted. These are de differences.

That's already fixed in stable 1 and it works without any problem plus I don't use any hacks to mount the data or don't need to flash other files to mount data.
Just flash twrp files and it works out of the box

No, you haven't fixed it we must type commands into terminal on twrp to mount. On my twrp it mounts automatically. But on yours vendor and other dynamic partitions haven't complete mount support.

After these steps you can boot your phone normally. Only at first install you need to go to magisk manager and install libraries.
