hi all couldnt find a post about anything like this but im hoping theres a genius here that can help me, using my samsung galaxy notes wifi hotspot ive been able to do various things like play xbox live games smoothly, allow others to use my signal to download big files/apps to there mobiles while out and about, and ive also got it tethered to my pc right now as i type this out, all goes swimmingly until 2 days ago!!!!
i buy and install the whole dawn of war game inc. all 3 expansions and get them patched ect. i go into the game and click online and sign in as normal, but then when in the matchmaking lobby i cant join any games and everyone times out when trying to join my own. anyone have any ideas on the follwing... (keeping in mind i have manually opened every port i know of,set a static ip, allowed it on my firewall and manage xbox live games just fine)
- whats causing the time out when people try to join me?
- can i fix it with some simple instructions?
- if not can i use a different method of tethering say using a modem tethered to my note?
any and all help would be greatly appreciated, so frusrating when something that should be simple doesnt work for you
Wow, I don't know what carrier you have? But they probably have cut you off. Here in the states , they would throttle you to dial if that much data was accrued!!
It's actually an additional low cost extra to my giffgaff goodybag, which no one can help me use properly lol
Does someone unlock Windows Phone 8 OS ?
Will someone do it ?
Thanks for info.
Yeah, when they have bootlevel 0 access, maybe it could be done
As I have heard, and understood, the chips are hard-encoded, for every device, so the JB cannot be achieved Will it ever be? Who knows, this is quite a challenge, but I am no optimist.
Hard coded?? Wow those SOBs. They really need to rethink as to why they are not selling as many phones as they would love to.
LOL. 99% of earth's population does not know or care about the "hard coded" chip (it is not hard coded, it is analogical thus it cant be reprogrammed)
Scumbag Microsoft
Just a question on this. So, boot level stuff is not posable because of encryption. So as of now, Custom roms are out, not possable, YET.
With this being known, what most of us would be happy with is a suto Interop unlock. This would allow max unsigned apps and maybe some minor system level apps (think Advanced Config type apps) maybe bosted with a root tools type of app (almost a custom rom but, not). This stuff will all run on the OS, not the boot level. Shouldn't this be possable once someone finds a hole someplace ?
So, full unlock with custom roms will not be possable but, at least we can have a step there to have some fun with out phones till someone actually figures it out (slim chance if it's encrypted)

And I agree, becides hobbiests and hackers (and XDA readers ), no one really cares about a unlock, that is about 98% of of the Windows Phone users. That does not mean we (the 2-3%) dont want it...
MSFT clearly does not care about hackers like us. Otherwise they would give us more APIs to program with.
They care about the bad type of hackers.
In WP7 we only had Full Unlock on devices that had a Custom ROM flashed onto it. This does not mean that it is not possible to exploit other loopholes but the NT Kernel is kind of a harder nut to crack than the old CE Kernel powering WP7. Basically you would need a vulnerability in a system App to get your code running. Then that code would have to escape from it's jail and acquire a higher permission level. Then I guess the first step would be to write something to the registry that would allow:
a) to sideload apps (basically what the developer unlock does)
b) to elevate permissions on those sideloaded apps (similar to what the Root Tools were able to do)
We only had two ways ever to get any Unlocks without flashing a CustomROM on WP7. The first was the original ChevronWP7 and the second was Window Break which only worked on certain Samsung devices and was quickly patched. Aside from that everything concentrated on the CustomROM route or on how an Unlock achieved previously could be conserved through system updates (Nodo to Mango).
So it might be quite some time before we even see something like the Interop Unlocks. Even most Android devices were routed by flashing a modified kernel.
It's been a while, has there been ANY progress on a Unlock even if interop or something for Windows Phone 8 ? I have a dev unlock and it limits me to 3 apps but, what I miss the most is apps like Advanced config giving me unlimited options for colors...
I do not believe so.
I have done searches here and in AT&T HTC One forum, did not see anybody had the same issue, which is sad (well, for me :silly
When trying to play any purchased or free movies or TV show episode, getting "There was a problem while playing [31]. Touch to retry" error message. After few consequent retries movie could start, but if paused, will not play again, also if rewound or fast forwarded, will not restart.
I cleared memory from Google Play, Google Play Movies, Google Play Services, restarted the phone (in long mode too), nothing helps.
Google Play support is useless, their answer is ridiculous: "Please restart the device, if after restart it still won't play, this device is incompatible with Google Play Movies at this time. Thanks, Martin, Google Play support". These guys are just have a robot replying with copypasted text without even knowing what device is in question. Should I tell HTC their flagship device is "incompatible with Google Play Movies at this time"?
If anybody saw this issue before and knows how to fix, please, help!
Sorry, if it was already discussed, I made several searches and read this forum to page 30, till got tired
Nobody else has this issue? That's really sucks

I'm right there with you. I've been playing with my new HTC One Developers Edition for a few days and have the exact same issue as you've described. I fired up my Nexus 4 and couldn't get it to error out even once.
I may just give up on the movies from Google play until HTC can fix this.
I have this same problem. Although, I'm using a tmobile One.

Same issue in the UK on sim free 32gb
Same issue here. AT&T 32 gig.
Ok, at least I see some others having same issue with non-US, ATT. TMO phones in both 64 GB and 32. Means the problem is not isolated to one modification or one operator.
Assuming the issue is with HTC firmware. Maybe (just a wild guess) related to the issue HTC can't recognize (can't see) some files downloaded from network with some tools e.g. ES File Explorer, somehow when the video is being cached the Google Play Movies application can't see it. Need to try something. So far I have one direction.
Since the problem exists even for files I make available offline from Google Play Movies, I am going to download one movie, then find it in temp directory it cached, connect my phone to the PC, and transfer it to the PC and back with USB. Then retry. Will report.
BTW, did anybody try HTC Support? Are they same level useless as Google Support?
[UPDATE] It did not work. Same error even though I checked the movie file is there (\Android\data\com.google.android.videos\files\Movies)
I've heard this is a problem caused by rooting the phone. Anyone here have their HTC One unrooted and on stock that can say they are or aren't experiencing this problem?

This is not related to root. My HTC One Developer Edition unlocked, 100% stock not rooted or changed in any way (stock recovery too). Had this issue from day 1.

This is unfortunately one of the side effects of using the Dev Edition. It also won't play movies and ther content purchased from HTC store. This is related to DRM security. I doubt it can be fixed. See below disclaimer to the Dev Edition from HTC website.
"Special note about the unlocked bootloader: With an unlocked bootloader, some content on your device may also be invalidated and cannot be accessed anymore because of invalid DRM security keys. This includes content that you may have purchased through a 3rd party vendor and through HTC."
I have both the Dev Ed and AT&T version and the latter has no issues playing Google Play and HTC content.

I can play a movie if it starts from the beginning (not always but it will work). If I try and stop the movie and restart from the stopped position I get the error 31. Also I had the Nexus 4 with unlocked boot-loader with root and I did not have this issue.
Also as of July of 2012 Google started allowing Play-movies on rooted device.

Mine behaves the same way. It's definitely specific to the Dev Edition as my AT&T model works fine and it IS caused by unlocked bootloader on this specific model, as stated by HTC. The fact that your Nexus 4 doesnt exhibit the same bahavious is irrelevant. Obviously Google would not cripple their own device by making it incompatibile with Play store.

BUT I can play movies I just have a problem starting the movie again once I have stopped watching it. I'm on AT&T unlocked with root. I can download the movie I can stream the movie. As long as I start watching the movie and don't stop I am fine. But if I want to watch 30 minutes and then a few hours later try to watch the move again I have to start all over. YouTube is fine Netflix is fine.

Some content on your device. I do not have this content on my device. It is being streamed. Besides, if it was due to invalid DRM security keys, it would be not playing. Period. But it is inconsistently playing after several retries, or even from the first time. But does not renew the play after pausing. I am not convinced this is something caused by invalidity of DRM keys. I would rather think something in HTC firmware.

I've got a 32gb AT&T HTC One which is completely stock and I've run into this problem (network error, try again later), both when I try to stream a HD movie AND with a downloaded HD movie (I haven't tried SD). The odd thing is when I tried it just now the downloaded HD movie played just fine; very snappy in fact and almost instantaneous seeking within the movie. I then purchased another HD movie as a test; that one streamed just fine. Although seeking wasn't quite as quick (which isn't unexpected) playback was fine.
Not sure if this helps or just confuses the issue, but that's my experience. I'll chime in again if anything changes (like it goes back to displaying network errors).
PS: the first time I tried this, the phone was connected to the HD Media Link I got w/ preorder. The problem persisted after I disconnected from the media link, but I wonder if the media link is the cause. I'll try hooking up to the media link after my wife gets done watching her shows to see if it works there.
I have the same issue on a 100% stock Developer Edition. After reading the posts in this thread, it seems like, collectively, the posters here have enough information to definitively answer two questions, but not all the information has been posted, so the answers are still unclear:
Several people in the thread have reported this issue on non-Developer Edition phones, but none of them explicitly state whether the phone is rooted or bootloader unlocked (except for the last poster, but he's reporting different error: "network error", not "There was a problem ... [31]"). If we can get confirmation that the error happens consistently on stock, locked, unrooted phones, that would rule out the "invalid drm keys" theory.
At least one poster claimed that Google Play Movies worked for them on the Developer Edition, but did not say whether they could stop and restart playback. Since the problem does not manifest unless playback is stopped and restarted, this is not clear evidence that movies play properly on some Dev Edition phones. In my case, I can pause and resume as long as Google Play Movies was the foreground app. If I switched to another app and then came back, I am unable to restart playback, and get the error 31. Anybody out there able to stop playback, switch apps, then switch back and resume playback on a Developer Edition phone?
Data point: Most or all of the HTC One reviews of the Google Play Movies app are 1 star, reporting that movies don't play back. Maybe this is widespread across HTC One models?
Assuming it really is an issue with DRM keys, does anybody know:
Will relocking the bootloader will restore the DRM keys?
What DRM keys are we talking about, and how are they generated, stored, and managed? The android DRM framework is plugin-based, but there's no way I know of (short of writing an app) to figure out what plugins are present; and even if we knew the set of plugins we wouldn't know what "type" Google Play is trying to use. It would really help to know, e.g., if there's a single set of keys that's mated to the phone somehow, and once they're gone they're gone, or whether you can generate a new set of keys that would at least work for newly purchased content, if not existing content. Are DRM keys invalidated when the bootloader is unlocked because they're erased, or because they're marked invalid somehow? Is the DRM key management fully or partially hardware based, or all done in software? Etc.
There's a notable lack of documentation for android.drm; it doesn't seem like it would really be useable without having documentation for the plugins on any given platform, and that doc doesn't seem to be available for HTC.

Those are good questions. Hope users will be able to answer. So far it looks like there are not much Google Play Movies users on HTC One Dev Edition, so, the problem is not annoying enough people to blow up.
I was not able to get any support on the issue from Google Play neither from HTC. HTC blames Google, Google, naturally, blames HTC (I posted their answer earlier). No help, ho clue, no hope. How expectable from Google and HTC. I have never had good support from either of them.
So after encountering the annoying 505 error I did a full back up via the Backup app as sync manager on the laptop wasn't playing ball.
Did the hard factory reset and then restored from the back up file I had made 10 minutes beforehand.
Most things have restored but I went to check a picture and ALL GONE!
Things like whatsapp messages and contacts didn't restore either.
What can do to recover the lost images?
and typically none of it worked to solve the 505 error.
I know this isn't the usual standard of question on this forum but is anyone able to shed some light on my problem?
Does the HTC Backup program, back up images or is that an oversight on my part?
ok so it seems that i'm an idiot and htc doesn't back up images on an htc account back up.
I'm now trying to run my phone through recovery software (MagicCute Recovery) but the program won't recognize the phone, I guess because it's not a mass storage device and connects via MTP?
I read a guild to turn on developer mode and then turn on USB debugging but that hasn't made any difference.
If there a way to plug my phone in and the computer to recognize it as a mass storage device?

check google playstore for undelete software, plenty on there, be careful about how much you install or uninstall.
Dont know if your aware of this, but nothing is ever really deleted, its flagged as safe to be overwritten and hidden from the user, too much installing or un-installing apps will overwite the flagged images.

I am sure that when connected to a Linux machine it shows as an external drive...not sure if that helps at all ?
If what i suggest is true then you can run Linux within windows from a USB drive, but clearly your recovery software has to be a linux compatible version.
Just a suggestion rather than fact!

Currently browsing play store now, is there any you can recommend?
I wasn't fully aware of how it works but I knew I could recovery most with some nifty software. MagicCute has worked wonders in the past for me.
At least all my music is stored in music play store.
I found a PC based program to scan the phone but the phone requires to me rooted for that, although that was my main reason for joining this forum to root I'm a little apprehensive to do anything like that until I have saved my pics!
Cheers.

Someone else said they had great luck with DiskDigger Pro
Good luck!
Sorry sheppster, completely missed your reply somehow yesterday. Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks clsa I'll give that a go once rooted.
I'm currently reading, reading watching and rewatching content on the rooting process. Very confusing for a complete and utter noob. A lot of content is spoken as if I have a clue, haha.
But I'm now registered on HTC DEV, all videos and content say to select all other supported devices due to the HTC One not being listed, but it is. I'm guessing HTC Dev has been updated since the guides were posted. Shall I click HTC One or still use other devices?
I installed Android Studio and also JDK which it asked for, but when continuing to install Android Studio I got the following message...
Is this detrimental to the use of the program or can I just continue?
Sorry this thread is going to turn into more of a rooting Q&A.
I now have sync manager working correctly and have made a back up on my laptop which I'm happier with than having something floating about in my HTC Account. So I think I'll go ahead and try unlocking my bootloader.
Well I have unlooked the bootloader now. Successfully? Not sure!
After confirming to unlock it then restarted and kept going round in circles, it's now saying "Android is upgrading" running through 253 apps. Nothing like the XDA video where it just restarts as a fresh phone.
I used the HTC One instructions from the drop down menu in the end.
Fingers crossed at the end of that it's working and I can continue to root.
Well considering I have an early start I've stayed up far too long messing around.
BUT! My phone is now rooted, I did attempt putting a venom rom on but it didn't install properly although I seem to have a large ammount of it's features here and there like being able to boot directly to bootloader or recovery from the power button.
But any way the lapcop software I had appeared to be useless, it found 603 images from various emails and programs files none on my actual pictures. I'm not running disk digger which again has found background images but still 85% left to scan.
I'm not holding out too much hope now as there's been a few files added and deleted to root and also reset again to root.
I'll update tomorrow how it went.
I didn't realise how cheap Disk Digger Pro was, so bought and ran that last night. I think it found touch under 4000 images but again mostly PNG program images.
It did manager to find 41 useful images though. It seemed to mainly pick up pictures which I had recently used on facebook, so annoyingly mainly recoverable images through facebook.
It picked up a lot of signatures from various emails and made a lot of duplicates. Not a bad effort for under 2 quid though.
As you know, the WP8.1 Store will be closed December 16 2019, and we will no longer be able to download apps.
For some time the Store has been a mess and people are already unable to download apps. Yes, even before the closing date.
The question is: How can we unlock our phones now?
The unlocking methods relies on downloading apps from the Store, like "Preview for Developers", "MixRadio", "HERE Maps" and File Managers.
People who didn't unlock their phones are hopeless? The ones that did unlock and need to reflash the .ffu are hopeless too?
EDIT: Just read about Windows Phone Internals, but some devices are missing in the supported list, including mine.
EDIT2: Some roms have MixRadio installed by default, so it is possible to easily unlock them.
Also downloaded Windows Phone Internals, and to my surprise, my phone is in the supported list (inside the software), although it is not listed at the site.
EDIT3: I got too focused on having the required apps available from the store that I forgot the most important part/tool to unlock the phone: The Windows Phone Developer Registration 8.1 tool. Unfortunately the last time I tried to unlock my phone (some days ago) I wasn't able to, and received an error.
Going by comments, other people have the same issue.

It is not working for a lot of people.
I'm afraid at this point they might not have any incentive to fix this. They can wait until the store closes in one month and forget about it.
I did a reset to the phone (Lumia 1020) and now I'm stuck without anything and with 0000 updates!! error c101a006 since Tuesday!!
if they won't fix the store, is there any way to build WP8.1 Denim CFW with all the stuff I need pre-installed, like I did with Symbian ? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!! HELP!!!!!!!

Issue is these methods rely on the phone being developer unlocked but today I'm facing an issue where the Windows Phone SDK registration tool refuses to unlock my Lumia 520 on a different CV ROM. Not sure what the issue is since I successfully unlocked it twice in the past couple of days. I know this because I'd installed the CustomWPSystem_0700.xap and applied CustomPFD_0003.xap successfully both times.
But today, it just refuses to go beyond ""Error logging into the Windows Phone Dev Center. Check your Microsoft Account credentials and try again"" and I've no idea why. Funny thing is, it would give the same error on previous tries but the phone would be unlocked!
I understand the WPI method but it feels like overkill with higher risks to do all that for just a few registry changes to trigger updates.
And I don't have much use of a boot loader unlocked or rooted device as of today. Research didn't bring up much help either so I'm thinking of installing the last WP SDK from VS 2015 and see if it does the job.
But yes, though Microsoft says they don't have any immediate plans to remove the updates for the phones, the methods of getting those updates might become problematic.

I am facing the same problem. That might be gone for good, unfortunately.
