[HOWTO][PICTURE GUIDE]Update your firmware using KDZ Updater - Optimus One, P500 Android Development

Since most of all are newbs and don't want to get into all the android jargon I created a small tutorial from all the existing ones.
Q: What is this tutorial meant to do?
A: Help you to update/flash official firmware on your phone [helpful for those with slow or no internet connection]
So first off all you need to download the following files.
KDZ updater

Procedure to install original firmware using KDZ-FW-UPD.exe ( KDZ FIRMWARE UPDATER )
[Note: This procedure was used to install V10E_00.kdz(android2.2.2) over V10b_00.kdz(android2.2) on an unbranded Indian GSM model of LG P500 using a Windows xp 32bit service pack 3.]
1. Install LG PC Suite IV from SD card which came with phone by connecting the phone to PC through USB cable. This is done to install the drivers for the phone on the PC (the procedure is as follows)
- Enable the 'USB Mass Storage Only' mode in the phone's Settings/SDcard & Phone Storage menu.
- Connect phone to PC with the USB Cable.

- Press the 'Turn on USB Storage' button which appears on phone.
- Browse to the folder containing the 'LG PC Suite IV' on the phone's SD card using Windows Explorer and run the LG Installer file. PC Suite will now install on your system along with the required drivers for your phone.
- Cancel setting up PC Suite or continue setting up PC Suite if you want to Sync or backup the phone data.
- After closing PC Suite, Safely remove the USB device from your system.
- Press the 'Turn off USB Storage' button on phone screen.
- Detach the USB Cable.
- Disable the 'USB Mass Storage Only' mode in the phone's Settings/SDcard &Phone Storage menu.
OPTIONAL STEP
For my comfort more than anything else, I switched off the screensaver and other power saving features on the PC and also set the screen timeout delay on the phone to 30 minutes.(Settings/Display/Screen Timeout)
Click to collapse
2. Remove the screen lock
3. Charge the phone to the maximum.
4. Enable USB Debugging on Phone (Settings/Applications/Development).
5. Detach all other peripherals from your PC. Exit all running applications on your PC especially other PC suites if any. Also exit running programs from the notification bar on the desktop. (Also uninstall Nokia or other phone drivers & microsoft visual ++ runtime environments - not an essential step.)
6.[IMPORTANT] Disable 'LGE Virtual Modem' in PC's Device Manager. (In your Windows operating system, go to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Modems > Right click on LGE Virtual Modem and click Disable.)
If this step is not followed the Phone will get bricked!
7. Move all the apps from the SD Card to phone memory and then Unmount the SD card from the phone (Settings/SDcard & Phone Storage) so as to remove it (physically) from the phone.
8. Open the phones back cover and remove the SD Card.
9. Download KDZ_FW_UPD_EN.7z onto your PC and extract it to a folder. Available HERE.Direct Download Link. (MD5 of 7zip file - 813A28BE9182AB604A1D43E745CE7AD7)
10. Run the msxml.msi file and complete the installation.
11. Connect the phone to PC with USB Cable.( If you are using a desktop PC, make sure you use USB ports that are in the back of your PC, avoid the front ports.)
12. Run KDZ_FW_UPD.exe from the extracted folder.
13. Chose TYPE as 3GQCT & Phone Mode as DIAG.
14. In the 'KDZ file' space, browse for the firmware you want to install. (In this case V10E_00.kdz)
15. Press the 'Launch software update' button.
16. The firmware flashing process is now underway.
If all goes well, in 5-10 minutes the phone will be flashed with the new firmware.
I shall describe in detail what happened with my phone - 10-15 seconds after launching software update on PC, my phone screen turned blank and in a couple of seconds the phone entered the 'Emergency Mode'. During this mode the screen was yellow with Emergency Mode written along the middle of the screen. Also you can check the progress on your computer in the KDZ updater. I have attached a text log file for you to compare. When the update is finished the KDZ updater will show a message in the log screen itself as =FINISHED=. The phone stays the same way till the Software update procedure finished on the pc and the phone turnes blank in the end. I waited a while for it to reboot but after a minute or so, I manually switched on the phone. The phone came alive and following the LG boot animation, the android logo screen came up. The phone takes about 2 or more whole minutes in that state before booting up fully and entering the home screen.
Wait till phone reboots by itself ( which it might not) so wait for a while before manually switching it on(I waited 3 minutes).
Click to collapse
17. After booting up fully, detach the phone from the pc.
Go to 'About Phone' in Settings and confirm the change from 2.2 to v2.2.2
Click to collapse
I have attached my LOG file so you acn compare it with yours.
After the update all the settings etc etc were the same. I also did not back up my phone.

Could you please specify the instructions that you have edited or added? Sorry, but I couldn't find any change from the original post. If there are any improvements to be made in my post, I would surely like to know.
Thanks a lot for the picture guide.
Edit: Have sent you a PM

Although KDZ is meant for LG phones, i am not sure whether it would work with optimus 2x.

The last pic shows "More system info".
Is that from an app? As i have never seen that on my phone.

Yes its an app called Elixir. You can get it for free from the android market.
It shows all the system information about your phone and has some very handy widgets which you can use.

Step-by-step guide for installing Windows 7

I already posted this guide in another thread, but to make sure others read it before asking questions that has been asked 10 times before I descided to repost it in a new thread. Enjoy!
As requested - here is a guide on how to install Windows 7 to the HTC Shift.
First of all you need an external DVD drive or a memory stick with 4GB minimum.
READ THIS GUIDE CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLING WINDOWS 7.
The information contained in this guide was collected from posts in this thread and I cannot guarantee that everything will work perfect for you!
• Download the beta image
USB-install:
1 - Open Iso file with winrar, and extract all file into folder C:\WINDOWS7\
2 - Open command prompt in administrator mode (start - all programs - accessories - command prompt - right click - run as administrator)
3 - Then type this commands :
- type CD\
- type DISKPART
- type LIST DISK
- type SELECT DISK X (where X is the memory stick disk number you got from LIST DISK)
- type CLEAN (CAUTION; THIS WILL ERASE ALL THE CONTENTS OF THE SELECTED DISK)
- type CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
- type SELECT PARTITION 1
- type ACTIVE
- type FORMAT FS=FAT32 QUICK
- type ASSIGN
- type EXIT
- type XCOPY C:\WINDOWS7\*.* /S /E /F E:\ (E: \ is the name of usb stick, if your key has an other letter, of course put your) (after *.* and after each letter preceded by / there's a space!)
Reboot, at startup push FN+F10, and choose your usb key.
This will not affect your HTC SHIFT Vista recovery partition.
Thanks killer_t
DVD-install
• Burn the image to a DVD
• If you want to dualboot Windows 7 and Vista you need to partition your harddrive before starting the installation. Use a suitable partition manager such as Paragon Partition Manager and shrink c:/ to approximately 15-17 GB. Create a new partition in the free space.
• Connect the USB DVD drive to your shift
• Press fn+0 (F10) after turning on your shift – select the DVD drive
• Follow the steps for installing Windows. Remember to select partition 2 as target partition if you want to dualboot with Vista. If not you can safely format the existing partition. This will not affect the recovery partition.
____________________________________________________________________________
• Download the shift drivers from HTC
• When you install the drivers – beware that you have to install them with Vista Compatibility mode enabled and run as Administrator. Right-click the driver setup file – click the Compatibility tab – select Windows Vista and mark “run this file as Administrator”

• Install all the drivers in the order below and restart your computer when asked to:
a. VistaECDrvV1[1].0.1.10
b. TouchScreen(1[1].1.0.2)
c. Realtek Audio Driver R197(6[1].0.1.5653)
d. Marvell WiFi driver(8[1].114.123.139)
e. Vitakey _AC5023_Fingerprint AP v5[1].0.2.0 and Driver v7.10.1.0 *
f. Extension Kit USBLanDriver(3[1].8.3.7) (Note: you have to install this through driver update in device manager)
g. Shagctrl_1[1].2.6.122-control center - Note that you have to disable aero to get the 1024x600 interpolated resolution working. Right click on dektop -> personalize -> and choose the first "easy of access" Theme.
h. Synaptics MicroPad(10[1].0.11.1)
• - VISTA_INTEL Chipset Driver v8[1].3.0.1014 You can use Windows Update for this one.
• Now that control center is working in Win7 there is no need to liberate your snapvue (if you haven't already done it). 3G,WLAN and BT works out of the box.
Guide for removing the "Evaluation copy. Build 7057.winamin.090305-2000" watermark in Win7 build 7057:
1. Download this patch.
2. Run the patch, command window will open.
3. Y for yes. Press Enter, then Enter again to exit.
4. Reboot. Watermark is gone.
• Finally, if you encounter any problems – READ this thread before asking questions. Remember that “search” is your friend

what do you think?
out of curiosity - does the recovery partition still boot after this by pressing Fn+F3?
Cause the last laptop (HP) that i installed windows 7 beta to could no longer boot from the recovery partition thereafter. - I suspect that with the HP's it has to have a specific boot sector of HDD for the F12 recovery to work; same as my acer?
Thanks

haven't tried but it should yes.. because it's not part of the partition of Vista... I guess that in vista you CAN'T remove the thing to restore partition.. but in your HP laptop you could and you may have removed it.

on my hp the recovery partition is defiantly still intact and I can still recover by marking the recovery partition active from vista but when it says press F12 to recover it now does nothing - so I think it must also need its "special" boot sector

yeah maybe... I think in the shift it is not part of the HDD (not sure about it).
I will try to restore vista soon, because I want to try things today (to have Win7 and WinVista on 2HDDs working on the shift.. Win7 on main HDD and Vista in external one).
edit1 : well ... recovery done no problem for recovery after installing windows 7 !! I save everything on vista side... activate bluetooth and wifi ... and then installing back Vista on another drive and then Windows 7 on main DD
edit2 : arf.. impossible to install windows on a usb drive ... sad ^^ .. well I will feedback Microsoft about it , it would be a GREAT addition to Win7. well.. reinstalling win 7 now !

for bluetooth .. I have disable in the "device manager".

[PROGRAM] Updated:One Click Root/UnRoot (Mac and PC)

Team,
This One-Click Root process will copy over the rooted-update.zip or unroot-update.zip file then reboot your phone. Follow the instructions in the CMD prompt that launches.
Credits:
LeshaK at Samdroid: for the original rooted-update.zip.
gunnarhafdal : for creating the Mac GUI for my app.
This has been tested on stock Android 2.1 Eclair only. If you rooted using another process you can use this process to unroot as long as you didnt load a rom that created links to busybox.
For the following models:
GT-I9000
Captivate SHG-I897
Vibrant SGH-959
GT-I9000M
Epic SPH-D700 (Untested but should work like other phones. Post with your results. This is harmless it will either work or it wont. It copies over 3 files to your existing build.)
Rooting adds the following to your system and unrooting removes them:
/system/xbin/busybox (version 1.17.1)
/system/xbin/su
/system/app/Superuser.apk (version 2.3.1)
and links /system/bin/su to /system/xbin/su
More will follow as they are released. PM me to add your Galaxy S Model.
Warning: I am not responsible for bricked phones, rooting can void your warranty....

2. For Windows x86 and x64 systems make sure that the Samsung Drivers are installed. You can get them here.
3. Extract the contents of GalaxyS_Vibrant_One-Click_Root.rar to a folder.
4. Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable and launch the file "T-Mobile Vibrant One-Click Root.exe" file.
5. Click the "One-Click Root" button. This will launch a command shell follow the instructions in the CMD window.
Mac Instructions:
Download the app: OneClickRootMac. Or Down Below.
It requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher.
Rooting Instructions:
1. Make sure your phone is on USB Debug mode: (MENU > Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging = Checked )
2. Connect the phone to your computer.
3. Click one of the buttons depending on what you want to do.
4. After the phone has rebooted into recovery select "apply sdcard:update.zip" for I9000 and I9000M and choose "Reinstall Packages" for the US models using the volume keys and then press the home button for I9000 and I9000M and the power button on the right top side for US models to start the process.
=====================================================================
Done! You are rooted.
=====================================================================
Un-Rooting Instructions:
To Un-Root follow the same instructions except click on the Un-root button. If you rooted using another process you can use this process to un-root as long as you didnt load a rom that created links to busybox. I would suggest to restore you phone back to stock ROM before even needing to unroot and if you are on stock un-root all you want otherwise what is the point of un-rooting.

the simplest root just got simpler
So is this actually faster? Or just "easier" not to mess up...
sounds like more work than just DLing, moving, and renaming with your phone... expecially for those without a comp...
anyway, this method has been added to the sticky in dev section..

I'd say its easier to not mess up. Faster for sure, if you already have the drivers installed.
This is for our newer brethren or anyone else that want a straight forward root method. And for those having trouble entering recovery from the button presses. ADB is bundled in the rar file so you don't need Android SDK.
Another thing that will help most is when I add unroot to the app which I should have completed tomorrow.
Doon2 asked for it, so here it is.
I appreciate the effort and skill...
BUT, how is this easier than downloading a file directly to your phone, renaming it and putting it at the root of your sd card and going to recovery?

Good question because that is what I do. Just an alternative method. The upcoming unroot will probably be more helpful to some.
But this method will help some for sure. It will download it to your phone for ya and put you in recovery. Well most of the other phones have it so why not ours.
Someone made the request and here it is. I will also be adding other tweaks to the app over time and useful info after rooting to this thread.

I know what you mean. I'm still used to holding down the buttons until the recovery screen pops up like on my G1. On the Vibrant, I have to remind myself to let go of the buttons as soon as the "Vibrant" screen comes up.
Yes, the overall process involved to use this program is longer, involves more steps, and, therefore, easier to screw up. Also, the fact that you have to download more than one file increases the chances of messing something up because of the possibility of corrupted files. Also, the "flash in recovery" method is OS agnostic, and technically doesn't even require a computer since you can download and rename the zip file right on your phone if you want to. Still, it's very easy to follow and would appeal to those who are new to rooting and don't feel comfortable with booting into recovery mode.
Updated the app to include unroot. Created a new update.zip file that will remove root. Also fixed the CMD shell launching minimized.
Lets see the java port. or even an APK to do so

Why fuss with button pushes, just enable debugging, plug in your phone, open a command prompt and type the following
Code:
adb reboot recovery
It's easier than messing with those buttons I assure you.

NEW GUIDE SEE HERE: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1653566
Hi everyone! The following guide I put together is a simple, easy to follow guide, for all G9 users. If you own an ARCHOS G8, this guide will not work for you. This guide will help you easily root your tablet. If you have found anything helpful, please click "thanks" on my post, and visit the original threads of our amazing developers and leave thanks there too! Before you go on, please BACKUP ALL IMPORTANT FILES YOU DO NOT WANT TO LOSE TO A SAFE LOCATION.
If you have rooted other android devices before..rooting your Archos G9 may be a little difference. Instead of rooting stock firmware, we first temp root, then enable SDE (special developer edition) menu. Once SDE menu is enabled, it adds an option in recovery to install developer firmware. This is when we install a modified firmware that has busybox and super user included. We do this because the exploit in the temp root causes some issues that doesn't make sense to keep in the long term. Hence the name "temp" root. This guide is very safe to follow. Chances are most problems you run into are very easy to recovery. Please view the FAQ at the bottom of this post if you have questions or run into problems. Because we don't have to flash recoveries or mess with the bootloader like some Android devices require, and because all methods are universal to G9s, this rooting process is very safe and easy to follow.
Please if you have any issues following this guide, reply with the stock firmware you have (be it honeycomb, ICS, firmware 4.0.6 etc) and the G9 model (flash or HDD 250gb). Board version and processor (OMAP 4430 and 4460 should not be a problem with anything, so probably don't include this when you ask your problem.)
STEP 1: Pre-root/Temp-root
1. Install the ADB drivers, using Quinny's thread here (WINDOWS ONLY)
2. Make sure you have the Android SDK installed and have access to adb
3. Open up a command window (Windows key + R, type cmd and hit enter)
4. Type, with your tablet plugged in:
Code:
adb devices
Your device should appear. If not, repeat steps 1-4 until it does. You may need to restart your computer
5. Download root_hack and extract. Note: Don't open these links in a browser, not tapatalk or the xda app
Download them to your desktop (or wherever your ADB installation is if you cannot access ADB from your desktop)
6. Double click rootdevice.cmd to open, press any key after reading the prompt.
(Note: Device will reboot a couple times)
7. Restart your tablet (important do not skip this step)
THANKS TO PAUL FROM MoDaCo for this root
THANKS TO QUINNY and LETAMA for the original guide
STEP 2: Enable SDE
1. Make sure you have done the temp root method. Please turn off your tablet. Your tablet should now be off.
2. Download this zip and extract to your desktop
3. Turn on your tablet. Once your tablet is on, plug it into your computer via usb cable.
4. double click enable_sde.bat
5. Once that is finished, type the following: (press enter after each line)
Code:
adb shell
rm /data/local.prop
6. (If the above code doesn't work or doesn't do anything, it is okay, move on with the rest of the guide). SDE should now be enabled, make sure buy turning off your device, then once it's off:
7. Hold power + volume down until the archos logo appears and a recovery menu appears
8. Use Volume Up + Down and power to select Recovery Menu > Developer Edition menu
9. If you can get to Developer Edition menu, you have correctly enabled SDE.
STEP 3: (optional, but recommended from honeycomb). Format your device, and then install/re-install ICS. No worries: You will not lose SDE menu doing this.
It is recommended to do a full device format when upgrading to ICS. If your device is acting up or feels "laggy" after updating to ICS, this usually helps. Before you begin, please note: You will lose all apps, media files, pictures, etc. Please backup any important files. Consider Titanium Backup (root users only to backup any apps with personal data you want to keep (game scores, etc).
AGAIN: YOU WILL LOSE *ANYTHING* NOT BACKED UP!
Note: You WILL need a PC connected to the internet, and the USB cable that came with your device. Before you being, please download Archos 80/101 G9 OS v 4.0.6 (190668Kb, for 80/101 G9 devices only) to your PC, copy to your desktop or wherever you will remember, then do the following:
Step 1: Power off your device
Step 2: Boot into recovery by holding the volume rocker down and pressing the power button simultaneously
Step 3: Once in recovery, select "Format System", then "Reformat Device..." (use the volume up/down to change selection, power button to select)
Step 4: Once formatted, return to recovery using the same method above, this time select "Update Firmware"
Step 5: Plug your device into your computer using the USB cable that came with your device
Step 6: A new drive should appear in "My Computer", copy firmware_archos_it4.aos to this device
Step 7: Ensure the transfer is completed, then press the power button on your device, keep it plugged in while it is updating
Step 8: Your device should boot, and be updated to the latest firmware 4.0.6
STEP 4: Install rooted firmware. YES! This will work after installing the official ICS OTA update or official AOS.
Before you begin, you will need SDE enabled. Please follow steps 1 & 2 in my first post. If you have SDE enabled, you can continue. Any downloaded applications and personal media should remain untouched. You have some options for which ROM you want. Please download files to your PC hard drive.
For stock ROM w/ root (busybox and superuser), download and extract the following:
4_0_6_update.zip
kernel_update.zip
For custom ROM [email protected]_V02, download and extract the following:
https://hotfile.com/dl/154778665/e6b99ad/ics_blue_update.zip.html
http://www.2shared.com/file/triOUMDR/ics_blue_kernel.html
BE SURE to extract, Archos recovery does not recognize zip files
Step 1: Power your device on
Step 2: Once your device is on, and your home screen is visible, plug your device into your PC
Step 3: Open a command prompt on your PC and type
Code:
adb devices
Step 4: Ensure your device shows up so you know it's connected properly and adb is active
Step 5: Type
Code:
cd desktop
This is to change the directory to where you download the two files
Step 6: If you have flash NAND model (8gb or 16gb): Type
Code:
adb push archos.ext4.update /data/media
If you have HDD model (250gb): Type
Code:
adb push archos.ext4.update /mnt/storage
Give it some time to transfer, it is a large file and will take several minutes, you will be presented with transfer info once the transfer is complete
Step 7: Power off your device
Step 8: Boot into recovery by holding the volume rocker down and pressing the power button simultaneously
Step 9: You should now be in Recovery mode with the following options "No" "Reboot" "Update Firmware" "Repair System" "Format System" "Developer Edition Menu". Select "Developer Edition Menu"
Step 10: Select "Remove Android Kernel" (if the option is present, if not, skip)
Step 11: Select Flash Kernel and Initramfs
Step 12: Copy zImage and initramfs.cpio.lzo to the drive that appears
Step 13: Reboot your device. Your device should now be rooted.
Frequently Asked Questions! (FAQ)
Will this guide work for my Archos 80 G9? For my 101 G9? I have Archos 101 G9 OMAP 4430. I have 250GB hdd model! I have turbo edition!
Yes this guide will work for ALL Archos G9 users. This includes 80 G9s and 101 G9s. This includes all 8gb G9s and 16gb G9s and 250GB G9s and 1.0 GHz G9s and 1.2 GHz G9s and 1.5 GHz G9s and OMAP 4430 G9s and OMAP 4460 G9s and board version V5 etc etc. ALL G9s!
Can I just drag the .zip file to the RAMDISK that appears when I flash zImage and initramfs?
No! Archos recovery cannot read ZIP files. You must first EXTRACT, then copy the contents of the extracted folder. NOT the folder itself. This means you will have two files on the RAMDISK, and no additional folders. If you don't know what a RAMDISK is, try Google or Wikipedia. If you get stuck in a boot loop because you forgot to extract archos.update.ext4 or drive.zip, you must follow the instructions below.
Help! I am stuck in a bootloop! Archos splash screen appears and keeps rebooting. I messed up when I was rooting, and now android will not boot! I accidentally formatted my device, and now I cannot boot into android.
This is a simple mistake and in 99% of cases it is easy to fix. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Download official Archos G9 firmware for ALL G9 tablets (aos file) HERE
Step 2: Boot into recovery turning your device off and then holding volume down + power at the same time
Step 3: Choose "Update Firmware"
Step 4: Connect USB cable to computer and tablet
Step 5: A removable device should appear (RAMDISK), copy the file you just download straight to that drive
Step 6: Press the power button once the file is done copying. DO NOT UNPLUG your device until it has finished updating and has booted back into android.
If you did not format your tablet or delete any personal media, your files should be uneffected.
Will I lose SDE menu if I update my tablet with official AOS or OTA update
As of the latest update (4.0.6) no official update from Archos has removed SDE menu. You should be fine, and your SDE menu should remain untouched.
Useful tips
Overclock
How to overclock your device. For SDE only.
First please download and extract https://hotfile.com/dl/152251241/ef27ecd/fast_ics_oc.zip.html
Then follow the instructions in my second post to push to your device then copy zImage and initramfs.
After you have successfully booted download SetCPU or No-Frills CPU Control and overclock to your desire. Thanks to surdu for making this happen! Visit his original thread HERE to view all warnings.
Howto take a screenshot
ICS has a built-in screenshot feature. No need to download any app!
Step 1: On the screen you wish to capture, press and hold the power button and volume down button simultaneously for a few seconds until the screen flashes and you hear a shutter. Be sure to press them at the same time
Step 2: You can find the saved screenshots in storage > Pictures > Screenshots
Step 3: Alternately, you can simply find them in the folder labeled "Screenshots" in the gallery.
Touchscreen issues
If you have touch related issues/errors, try the following:
Step 1: Turn your device off
Step 2: Carefully wipe down the screen with a dry or lightly damp rag. If you use a lightly damp rag, be sure to dry it with a dry one quickly.
Step 3: Power on your device
Step 4: Go to Settings > Repair & formatting > Touch screen calibration > *Put your device down on a flat, hard surface like a table, tap Calibrate the Touch Screen ONCE, then DO NOT TOUCH.
Step 5: Once finished, you can return to your launcher or wherever you wish
Multiple Users
More than one person uses your Archos?
Either designate home screens using a contact widget, or use a note widget in launchers like GO Launcher. There are also apps that support multiple profiles for root users like SwitchMe Root Profile Manager, however I can not guarantee this will work.
Multi-boot!
See this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578438
Removeable System apps
System apps you can safely disable (new ICS feature) or delete via Titanium Backup or other root app: (only remove the ones you don't use)
Archos Connect
Archos Remote Control
Media Center
Media Server
Movie Studio
Online Registration
Photo Frame
Talk Back
User Manual

I have added him thank you for reminding me!
Concerning multiple users, I would suggest you Switch Me, it allows users to have their own sessions on the tablet.
As for the uncompatible apps, it's mostly games that haven't been certified as compatible but they actually run flawlessly! (9mm, Asphalt 6 HD...). I tried to modify build.prop and init.Archos.80S (in my case) but it didn't work on ICS (see topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528899)

Is this what you're talking about?
first, thanks for your work with the tutorial
i have a few questions:
it is possible to root with ICS already installed?
by enabling SDE and installing the rooted fimware is the only steps necessary?
if not, is possible to downgrade to honeycomb to gain root?
i have a little of experience with rooting android devices(huawei u8230,still alive and kicking an a nexus s of a friend) and i remember that in some cases with a diferent version of android i had to gain root again.
thanks in advance and sory for the questions

hi! this firmware is "pre-rooted", meaning you just have enable sde and install the firmware seen in the big STEP 2
Do that, and your device will be rooted. I don't think you can downgrade, however ICS is far superior, surdu already released the rooted firmware
hope that answers your question
thanks for your advice.
the only reason to downgrade is to enable root but if the only needed step is to enable SDE and install this rom, much easier
today or tomorrow im going to do that and after i will post the results

alternate location for phase 1 phase 2 files
Hi Shano56,
Thanks for the thread. It is just what I am looking for. I have upgraded to ICS and want to root it.
One question though, is there an alternate location to down load files "1" and "2" when attempting to temp root?
It seems everytime I go to download Step1 and Step2 in temp rooting I get an error message "all free slots on server are taken try again later" ......

Hi again,
So I couldn't resist. Followed the instructions and all went fine. Looks like I have root access (E.g. can install apps which require root access).
One problem and one question.
Problem: Please ignore if people do not want to talk about this app but adfree doesn't work. says it can't see partition.
Question: Will I always have root access or do I need to go into boot options screen every time that I turn on the device and choose developer edition?
Thanks,
Dan

Flash at your own risk. I am in no way responsible for any damage done to your device. This will wipe your entire device except the EXTERNAL sdcard.
If you are using Windows make sure you have installed the APX drivers before continuing.
Nvflash Windows Drivers
md5sum: 9aa3a4814ca63366329d85a22ed01f64
To boot into APX mode
1. Power off
2. Hold down the Vol - and the Vol +
3. While holding the Volume keys down, Power on
4. The display should go black, and both LED's on either side of the home button should light up. This is APX mode. If using Windows make sure the drivers are installed
Instructions
Windows
1. Extract the K1_Stock_120109_nvflash_R2.zip contents to a directory
2. Double click the "flash-windows.bat" file
Linux
1. Extract the K1_Stock_120109_nvflash_R2.zip contents to a directory
2. Open a terminal and cd into the extracted directory
3. Copy and paste the following command
Code:
chmod a+x ./flash-linux.sh && chmod a+x ./files/nvflash
4. Run either
Code:
sudo ./flash-linux.sh
or from a root prompt
Code:
./flash-linux.sh
CWM Controls
Power = Back (Any submenu), Toggle Display (Main Menu),
Vol+ = Highlight Up
Vol- = Highlight Down
Home = Select
To boot into recovery
You can now use the built in app or widget to reboot to recovery
**Superuser may crash during the first couple of reboots to recovery. Dont worry
Or run 'k1recovery' from the terminal or adb
Notes
If you try to flash any of the OTA update.zip's, it will probably work, but you will be shut out of CWM and will not be able to get back in unless you reflash everything via nvflash

Flashing this ROM. Finally taking a plunge to root the device - can't wait!
So far, the process has been simple and sweet - hope the entire flashing and post flashing process experience is sweet too!!
Thanks Khanning for such a quick turn-around to my request

Try Market Enabler, that might help with the market region, although not sure since that probably uses gsm values to trick the market..

That's because on this ROM, the tablet is cloaked to work as a Xoom tablet for full app compatibility on the market. If you can change that on the build.prop (I think that's where it is) manually, it should accept it.
Although like I was told the OTA aren't full version of the ROMS, you might want to find and use the full version? Just a thought - more experienced users can give better suggestions.

Try disabling the Geolocation option, you should find that under -
Settings -> Location and Security -> "Use location for Google Search" and "Use GPS Satellites" (try disabling these option).
Super easy to flash and runs great and the status bar rocks.. that original was horrid

Awesome
This was the easiest install I think I have came across for an android rooting method. Runs so much smoother now. does the status bar write over and remove the lenovo bar? Any issues, thinking I am going to run this. Has anyone ran any performance tweaks, V6supercharge etc. Any benefit? Running much better now.
I did notice all my google apps updated to Play versions but the market still has not changed to the google play icon or version. Do i need to do a wipe cache etc?

Am running autokiller memory optimizer and it definitely made the device faster. Also the free memory has been behaving nicely.
I flashed the stock staus bar too, ii have felt, this made the device faster too. The lenovo bar was pretty slow and would hang pretty frequently.
I have also change the home launcher to Go launcher ex, feels better and more standard as I have this on other devices too. Love the inbuilt task manager on go launcher.
I yet have to try out V6, would love to see the results. Although as earlier suggested by Khanning, delete the /data/firstboot folder prior to trying else the device won't be able to rebuild your Dalvik cache. I wouldn't try it without making a backup using CWM, incase it messes up and you need to revert.
Let me know the results if you try out V6.
Cheers

I will probably start with some of the tweaks you mentioned before I attempt any v6 type adjustments. Have you or anyone tried ROM toolbox for adjusting memory, build prop, etc. I have used this on my Droid INcredible, and works great but there is a good amount of information on the settings people have been using on phones. Thanks for the information.

Haven't used rom toolbox to make any custom adjustments to the build.prop, but technically if it makes changes to the build.prop file, its pretty much the same risk of a bootloop as trying out v6. Just that it can be controlled by inducing one tweak / value at a time. You can also take a backup of the files and push the originals using adb.
I really wouldn't all that effort unless I find lots of free time soon
But pls do share your experience, most specifically modifying the build.prop and deleting the dalvik cache (and having it rebuild on startup). If this works, I will plunge in and try out other stuff.
P.S. I am now using RAM Manager Pro and feel, this has made the device much snappier. Experiencing the same snappiness on my HTC Vision too. So far, I feel its performing much better than v6 or akmo.

Installed the rom and its nice and snappy....
Can someone give a break down to wipe the dalvik cache please?
Got the can't install app from market problem to and I guess that is the way to fix it, to delete it?
Thanks.
ANY idea why I can't boot recovery to sdcard? Just dcim, android, and data folders
no usb connection to xp
I loaded rom and Honeycomb status bar fix. The speed and root is nice. But i just noticed I can not get a usb connection to be recognized by my windows machine, so I can copy over backup'd files.
Anybody know what needs to be done to restore USB connection? Is it because the device is no longer K1 and is now Xoom that it wont work wth lenovo usb drivers?
Please help. Thanx.
Is there a chance for a Version based on
K1_A301_12_12_120109_M_GE
for the UMTS/3G+wifi model?
Thanks.

Yup yup
Can someone with the M_GE edition hop into freenode irc #ideapad-k1 with me to test it. If you don't have an irc client you can just go to http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ideapad-k1
[Edit]
Updated the first post with a link to K1_CWM_120109_M_GE_Rooted.zip for my mobile friends in Austria
thanks to isime13 for testing
Thanks I will try it ASAP. And this comes from Austria and not Germany.
Feedback for the DE Version.
look like rooted on the first look.
Superuser app installs fine.
BUT: Apps don't get super user rights. superuser cant update itself and busybox pro complains it cant install because it does not get superuser rights.
So on the second look...no it does not work right.

Question My computer doesn't recognize the phone in fastboot even with drivers installed

Hi all,
I really need your help, my computer doesn't recognize the phone in fastboot, I've installed different drivers and none of them work, in device manager it appears as Android with the yellow exclamation mark. I've already enabled USB Debugging mode, not sure what am I missing, please help.
Check in another USB Port, use original xiaomi's wire...and install latest USB drivers
I have the same problem, i'm using the original xiaomi wire and already installed lastest usb drivers.. the fact is that when I plug in the cell phone in fastboot mode the computer keeps sounds as connecting and disconnecting the device (I used two wires and two different computers)
Yup exact same thing, I hope somebody knows how to fix it and help us out.
Try with mi flash tool software for the computar... And let the program install the original firmware again... I think you can get rid of the problem

I'll try that, thanks for the help.
I had the same problem, and I fixed it changing the cellphone drivers in device manager, from: "Android" to ---------> "Xiaomi Composite MDB Interface".
Hope it helps someone.

Hi, where do I get the USB drivers? Even the official website says to make sure that "your PC has necessary drivers", but they don't provide any link where you can get them.
The Unlock Tool only has a "Check" button next to the version number, which says "5.5.224.24(Already latest)" and again, no drivers check. There are tons of fishy websites that claim to have the drivers and I have already tried several of them, but no success. Your help would be much appreciated.

Hi, after almost 2 days of constant researching and trying and failing and testing, I have finally figured it out! You need two things: MediaTek Driver and disabling Driver Signature Enforcement in Windows 10. It's because normally, the (64-bit) Windows 10 system won't allow you to install an unsigned driver and the Mediatek Driver is unsigned.
Here are the steps:
1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, open PC settings
2. Go to Update & Security
3. Go to Recovery tab
4. Press & hold Shift key on your keyboard and click the Restart now button (in the Advanced startup section)
5. Select Troubleshoot ->Advanced setup -> Startup Settings and press Restart
6. Press 7 number key corresponding to "Disable driver signature enforcement" entry.
The system will now boot with the Driver Signature Enforcement disabled (it's going to be automatically enabled with the next restart). Download the Mediatek Driver (official source), unzip the file. Here's how I installed the driver:
1. Press the Windows key, type Device Manager and open the utility program
2. Click the top item in the list (your PC's name) and click Action in the menu and select Add Legacy Hardware.
3. Click Next in the Wizard, select Install hardware manually, and again Next and Next again.
4. Click Have Disk, Browse, navigate to the unzipped folder: SmartPhoneDriver > x64 > Unsigned infs and select the file android_winusb.inf. Click OK and select Media Tek Inc. in the left pane and then Next and Finish.
Your phone will now finally appear in the Unlock Tool.
This should work for all Note 10s users who also happen to have a 64-bit Windows 10 machine. Let me know how it went for you.
hey Guys, i´m new in the forum. But i had the same problem and i´m bringing the solution.
This error happens because Windows doesn´t recognize the bootloader, then you must install manually the bootloader´s driver and connect again your phone, so simple. I´m attaching the driver in this post.
Cheers.
download google usb driver: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb
connect phone to pc in fastboot mode. then go to device manager and update related driver named: android.
choose have disk and select Android_USB.inf file. then highlight Android bootloader interface and install driver. in win 10 must disable driver signature verification

After searching for a long time, I found that this is the solution that works 100%. At last I was able to register the unlock of the bootloader today after a week of searching how to do it, since the driver did not work, thank you.
