Hi all,
Does it make a huge difference what modem is flashed to the phone?
If so… can any one tell me the best modem for Vodacom South Africa.
Thanks in advance.
I would like to know this too. Wasn't there a list of modems and what they are for? I saw it once before but now that I need it I can't find it anywhere.
See the thread below. Someone gave me a good answer yesterday with the list of modems.

Thanks

depends on the band your country uses
for mine i needed 850 so i went for JL2 and it works perfectly
You have to try out all of them and pick one that suits for you. Every galaxy s is bit different and we live in different countries so it is impossible to the best.

Like many many other threads here, ans is very generic:
JK4 is one of the most common modems. BUT, what's good for me may not be good for u. So no point in asking these type of questions. Some say they saw battery gain in JK3 compared to JK4. But for me it was opposite.
Read the modem thread, based on opinions there, pick a few. Test each one out for a day. End of the week, u'd know which one best suits ur hardware.

I am finding the best battery life with jl2 and the best signal with jk4. but there is not much difference that iv noticed.
You see JK4 mentioned quite a bit but it can vary with kernel. GPS can vary as well.

not modem, "modem.bin" it is the file that controls the radios. the reason for changing it is either for frequency settings for your location. north america other than t-mobile uses 1900 and 850mhz some countries like austrailia and new zeland use the same. europe uses 900mhz instead of 850 and many of the roms ported to out phone have the european modes. for that reason we use the canadian bell and telus modem.bins for the i9000 roms.
also the captivate modem.bin versions dont have hsupa conectivity and the captivate roms are not compatable with i9000 modems, the bluetooth calling doesn't work in that combination. it is also recomended to match the kernel to the modem but i find that the chinese captivate i9088 modem and the telus t959d modem work better for me than any i9000 modem available.

Hi all,
I was just wondering, does anyone know what is the best and compatible modem that can be used with JVR for Malaysia? It seems that i'm having issues with GPS with this FW, and i wanted to test different modems.
Any response would be much appreciated!
bump
i would also like to know...
All modems are compatible with all roms, that´s not a problem. About coverage and battery saving, well, I think the best you can do is try one for a few days, then another and compare.
Hey guys,
I will be visiting USA soon and was wondering if someone could suggest me a new modem for this region. I will be using a T-mobile connection for my I9000. My criterias are: 1) decent battery life 2) good to best voice quality 3) decent data connection.
Thank-you in advance!
There is no best modem as such for now... you have to try from the most popular modems and see which one works best for you.
If you want to see the popular modems you can head to the thread in my signature...
doubts, ask any question over my thread I will respond you...
Thank you. I will check out the popular modems in your thread.

When I was in Vegas on ICS is was getting a solid 4 bars all the time with the JVT modem. I can't comment on call quality though.

JVU work fine
Hello my fellow XDA members!
So I use the SGH-I897 as my daily driver; I've experimented with many different roms and so far my favorite is the slim bean; however I would like to hear some opinions of modems that are currently being used; favorites, are there certain modems I should be using w/my particular phone now, etc.. Thank you in advance for everyone's time and insight! Oh and I researched what modems do a little bit, but some more detailed info would be great as well; Thanks again everyone!
I'm pretty new to this scene; so if there's anything that I should be doing please let me know as I do not want to upset any of the senior members!

Modem is basically your signal. If your internet speed and your calls are fine, there's no need to change it.
Also, it is quite hard to suggest modems as they will have different strength in different area so when you get bad signal and such, you have to try a few different ones.
If your signal strength and data connections are good there is only one other reason I can see that you would want to change your modem. That would be if your having issues with GPS signal. Of course the cappy is notorious for being less than stellar with its GPS but I once had issues with signal(turns out it was my carrier not my phone) so I flashed a couple different modems. One that I tried completely broke my GPS until I flashed back to what I started with.
That being said the modem you currently have installed is what works best for me and based on various threads and posts its seems to be a favorite.
