[Q] N1 not receiving update notifications - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a used N1 and am using it on TMO as an upgrade from a MyTouch 3G. It was sold as being fully stock (no root, no unlocked bootloader, but I don't know how to verify that), and it is the holiday model (with the QR code on the back)
When I booted it up, it came to the main launcher (it didn't take me through the setup wizard). It looks like the last user did a full wipe (maybe not, because I thoguht that would make the setup wizard popup if they did). It was running 2.2.1 (I think) and had an update for 2.2.2 immediately ready to install. So, I let it install the update, which went smoothly and it's now running 2.2.2, with baseband 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7 and kernel 2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320android-build apa26 #1.
I have been patiently waiting for my gingerbread update, and it has not arrived. I figured since 2.3.4 was rolling out, they stopped 2.3.3 updates and that was why I didn't get it. Now that 2.3.4 has rolled out, I still haven't got any updates, even after doing a checkin.
Does anyone have any ideas why I am being forgotten, and how I can go about updating my phone? I will not root or unlock the bootloader - I'm keeping this thing 100% stock and not willing to take any risks with it.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Update don't get push to everyone at the same time. Be patient

OK, thanks. So it might be normal that I haven't gotten 2.2.3, let alone 2.3.3 yet? From what I've been seeing in other threads, the OTA update being pushed out now is from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, so that wouldn't work directly from 2.2.2

You can always do a manual update and not have to wait for the OTA. Just download the corresponding files and rename it to "update.zip" and place on your SD card. Boot into recovery and apply update.zip. You remain 100% stock, but no wait.
And no, you need to go to 2.2 before going to 2.3.3 before going to 2.3.4. The OTA's are generally incremental updates.

How to: FRF85B to FRF91 (keeping root)?

Looking for a definitive answer on FRF85B to FRF91, carrying Root!
i am on FRF85B (rooted)
I read this instructions,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7075094&postcount=379
But as I am new to these things, how do i do the following:
"*Installed the FRF91 package from ......
*Without rebooting, installed the root package"
How do I install the FRF91 package? I am AmonRa recovery it wont allow me to install it.
Where ya from?
What i did was installing stock 2.1 from HERE and then just let it update naturally OTA update itself to 2.2. After that just apply root from HERE Just fastboot Amon-Ra again.
Anyways, Lox update didn't work for me either.
The top option requires stock recovery, not Amon-Ra.
At the time it was released, european Nexuses couldn't load several updates that popped up. Don't know if Lox updated the link'
If i was you i would just flash Geo411m's ROM, pretty much stock with ChrometoPhone thrown in. If you don't need it just remove it with adb.
To me the batterylife was a bit better with that and best of all, it has black status bar.

Thanks, I will be going with Geo411m's blackstatus too!

How to: ERD79 (RA-Nexus-1.7.0) to Froyo

Haya all,
First, I am not a pro at this stuff, tho I am a full time developer, and comfortable with most things IT.
About 3 months ago I purchased a Nexus One, and since I live in Thailand, and the root OS could not handle the Thai font, I followed instructions on this site to root and upgrade to the RA-Nexus-1.7.0 package.
Now, however, I would really like to have 2.2 for the new apps and (most importantly for me) the Flash update.
Is there a way to flash this thing without erasing my current apps, configurations etc?
Let me also say that while my phone was notified of the updates (both 2.1 and 2.2), both failed to install with "Verification Failed". Manual install of Froyo also failed with the same message (via copy to flash and reboot to recovery).
I assume that I need to use the SDK to push a update to the phone, but do not want to make a mistake... and the directions I have found here assume that you either have a fresh phone or can update via flash/recovery.
Can someone please shoot me in the right direction? (I will need a download link too =D)
Thanks,
Frosty
Ok, let me add...
Like I said I am not a pro at this stuff. In the About Phone section, it does say that I have 2.1, and just in case its relevant, baseband version: 32.19.00.16U_4.02.02.14 and kernel version: 2.6.29-gad36b87 [email protected] #1
Rebooting to recovery mentions the RA-Nexus-1.7.0 still, so I assume thats the current "recovery".
Thanks
Frosty
What's your build number? That should be shown in the same screen as your baseband and such.
Edit: Also, are you wanting to use the stock Froyo ROM (with or without root) or did you want a custom Froyo ROM?

Android OTA updates?

I have a nexus one on android 2.2.1, when 2.2 was release i received the update pretty quickly.
However i have stayed on 2.2.1 ever since
With members posting OTA released of 2.3.4 im like wtf!
I have tried to install the updates manually by: update.zip on root and applying in the recovery screen - this has never worked for me, i get a verification error
Now im posting this in the hope that someone can help me update please!!!
Note: My n1 is not rooted and i would like it to stay like that also im only interested in updating to stock roms.
p.s. i try the *#*#2432546#*#* nearly everyday to check for updates.
p.p.s. im from the UK and am on Vodafone if that makes a difference.
Many Thanks
Vodafone use their own tweaked version of Android, and so you have to wait for Vodafone to tweak the update before you get it...
You can use the passimg method to put a completely stock Google Android on your phone, but will lose some data doing it...
Thanks for the post danger-rat, i didnt know vodafone did that.
Will look into passimg.
Cheers
For anyone else having this problem i have found a great guide on how to go from a vodafone rom to a google stock rom
http://ossadmin.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/goodbye-vodafone-uk-nexus-one-rom/
I haven't tried this yet but will soon and update to whether it works.
The above method works, the only problem i had was the passimg rom gave "Main Version is Order" error.
This was resolved by using the rom from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059116
I am now on android 2.3.4 google rom, still unrooted

Can't update to 2.3.3

I'm currently running 2.2.2 OS Build FRG83G. The phone has downloaded the system update but refuses to install it. I keep getting "zip verification failed". I've even tried a manual update with the same results. The phone is rooted and unlocked if that helps. How do I get this phone to update to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread ?
You have to be stock to apply official updates. Sense you are rooted, why not just flash one of the stock rooted builds in the dev section?
Hmm ok, I will go do that then and see if that works.
<snip><snip><snip>
I am having a similar problem. I have a brand new N1 with 2.2 build 2.16.405.1 CL223106, do you know if I can jump right to 2.3.4 without first going to 2.2.3? Whats with my build number? Why doesn't it show FR....? I tried the #*#checkin*#* and am getting nothing OTA. Thanks.
You may have carrier specific build. Are you with Vodafone, or Videotron, etc?
Shouldn't be with Vodafone or Videotron. Its a PB99100 and should be for Tmobile. I bought this new from a 'questionable' site on the internet and now I'm freaking out. I do get 3G with my tmobile sim card.
Just because it works on T-Mo, doesn't mean it doesn't have a ROM from another carrier. It's possible you got some back stock from a carrier that tweaks their ROM...
I don't recognize the build number, so I couldn't say for certain, but it doesn't sound like a Google build...
You can switch to a stock ROM very easily by following the unroot/restore guide in the wiki. It will wipe your phone, so you may wasn't to backup what you can first (MyBackup is about the best non-root option).
Since you bought a version from a questionable source, does it happen to have a lock symbol at the bottom of the 'X' when you boot up? If so, it will make it sooo much easier to get your phone to a modern version. You could still stick with Google's Stock Android, or you could go with a better (in my opinion) 3rd party ROM like CyanogenMod.

Bionic ICS Update Newb Installer

Bionic
Verizon network
System Info: 6.7.2231.xt875
Android version: 4.0.4
Build Number: 6.7.2_223
So I got fed up with the phone as it was and updated it to the info above. I have never done this before and just did it following the info instructions on droidhive. Didnt do anything more than back up contacts and downloaded the ICS leak and installed it with out bootstrap this or bootloader that or anything. Probably did more than I should have as I dont undertand anything about rooting or ROMS or anything else.
Now my understanding from reading here is when and if Verizon does a OTA upgrade I will not either 1) recieve notification nor 2) be able to download it is that correct? I also cannot go back to my old build since I didnt , insert magic special thing I should have downloaded or installed prior to me updating, is that correct also? Can I do further upgrades that I have been reading about on this forum as written and in theory if I follow the instructions should be ok? or do I need to go back to the old build (if possible) then work my way back up?
I probably should have left well enough alone but I was getting so pissed with my phone and I tell you since I upgraded to that leak it runs very nice with a few hiccups when I try and run different apps. Figure if I screw it up too bad I can always get the Samsung Siii...and not mess with it...thanks for entertaining this newb!!
Take a look at this thread. It shows how to get back to .905, or to go to newer versions without losing your data. As of right now, I suggest going with the .232 leak, which is the latest you can go to while still being able to return your phone to gingerbread.

I agree.. if you are running 223 right now.. i would stick with it till the ota. You might not recieve notification but either way, you will be able to dl the image and load it the same was as you did with 223. seeing as how it will be signed it shouldn't be a problem. I have been running 223 for a few days now and overall i'm very happy with it. i just wish that i could turn the 4g off sometimes because it's a beast on the battery in my area..
I'm Loving the .223 update. It has made my Bionic into the phone Verizon should have provided me from day one!!! It isn't perfect, but it is darn good, miles, yards, acres, even years ahead of Gingerbread.

Guys still running above on the phone but have read of some upgrade/ROMs that I'd like to do, but it says I need to be rooted and I never rooted even when I did the upgrade shown above. Everything Im reading on how to root is assuming Im on the stock GB does it matter that Im not on GB and I still can do it on ICS the same way? Please advise on steps to root it now so I can continue upgrading and installing ROMS...thanks!
