Can't update to 2.3.3 - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently running 2.2.2 OS Build FRG83G. The phone has downloaded the system update but refuses to install it. I keep getting "zip verification failed". I've even tried a manual update with the same results. The phone is rooted and unlocked if that helps. How do I get this phone to update to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread ?

You have to be stock to apply official updates. Sense you are rooted, why not just flash one of the stock rooted builds in the dev section?

Hmm ok, I will go do that then and see if that works.

<snip><snip><snip>

I am having a similar problem. I have a brand new N1 with 2.2 build 2.16.405.1 CL223106, do you know if I can jump right to 2.3.4 without first going to 2.2.3? Whats with my build number? Why doesn't it show FR....? I tried the #*#checkin*#* and am getting nothing OTA. Thanks.

You may have carrier specific build. Are you with Vodafone, or Videotron, etc?

Shouldn't be with Vodafone or Videotron. Its a PB99100 and should be for Tmobile. I bought this new from a 'questionable' site on the internet and now I'm freaking out. I do get 3G with my tmobile sim card.

Just because it works on T-Mo, doesn't mean it doesn't have a ROM from another carrier. It's possible you got some back stock from a carrier that tweaks their ROM...
I don't recognize the build number, so I couldn't say for certain, but it doesn't sound like a Google build...
You can switch to a stock ROM very easily by following the unroot/restore guide in the wiki. It will wipe your phone, so you may wasn't to backup what you can first (MyBackup is about the best non-root option).

Since you bought a version from a questionable source, does it happen to have a lock symbol at the bottom of the 'X' when you boot up? If so, it will make it sooo much easier to get your phone to a modern version. You could still stick with Google's Stock Android, or you could go with a better (in my opinion) 3rd party ROM like CyanogenMod.

CONFUSED N1 Owner

Hello folks,
Well I recently made the switch from iPhone OS to Android , picked up a used Nexus One in pretty good shape, no scratches, like new and what not, the phone is amazing BUT I am having a hard time understanding some stuff (I thought I was getting a stock N1, and it seems it has been loaded w/ custom ROM and is rooted and unlocked. -which not bad in my opinion, but...
I still have some questions, I am trying to update to Froyo 2.2, and im not sure if I will ever get OTA since the phone has been messed around with and if i manually update to 2.2 it will cause trouble.
1) When I boot the phone it shows the "lock" to be opened, so I am assuming it is oem unlocked, the phone has working WiFi tethering (just like in 2.2)
2) also in the menu of the phone there is an app "superuser permission" which thats why assume the phone is also rooted
And finally In the "About phone" I get the following:
firmware 2.1-update1
baseband
32.36.00.28h_4.06.00.12_7
kernel
2.6.34-cyanogenmod
mod version
cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3
build
epe54b
I have reset the phone to factory settings, but the same info comes up everytime. the phone runs flawless, no lags, overall i love the phone.
And finally if anybody knows please feel free to share, I am trying to open port 80 on the N1 while it is running Wifi tethering and the only way i have found to do this is if the N1 is rooted, correct me if im wrong... i have a rovio that is refusing to connect to the N1s network...
Any positive input will be highly appreciated! thanks!
Your not very confused!
Your phone is unlocked and has root. its running cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3.
You can install a custom froyo rom without too much of a problem from recovery. Remember to nandroid-backup everything from recovery first.
Get into recovery by holding down the volume down button as you press the power button to power on the phone.
Heres an example of tethering via usb/forwarded port
http://blog.tangorangers.com/2009/02/tetherbot_android_and_slackware_how_to/
you can install 2.2 with no problem but you have to manually do it. you might get a notification for ota's but you won't be able to install them. just install it manually.
Man you guys are awesome! thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yeah man, you're money. For a used phone it is set up in possibly the best way possible for someone new to android and ready for you to throw the new CM6 ROM on there. You even have the proper radio already. You're good to go.
You can install Froyo in various ways. If you want total stock you can follow the instructions on this link and let OTA froyo install itself. If you need root you can download that from HERE
This method requires SDK installed with Fastboot on your computer with mandatory USB Drivers.
Or you can go the very easy way and use ROMs that is allready cooked, ready to flash in recovery right over your old ROM, like the link that is in my signature. It works great for me and is pretty much stock with root and a couple of extras you can delete via ADB if you don't need them..
Just download the Rom, drop it on the root of your SD Card and flash away in Recovery. all done!
What you are running is a test version of Cyanogen which is not the stable version. So it seems the previous owner didn't bother flashing it.

[Q] N1 not receiving update notifications

I just got a used N1 and am using it on TMO as an upgrade from a MyTouch 3G. It was sold as being fully stock (no root, no unlocked bootloader, but I don't know how to verify that), and it is the holiday model (with the QR code on the back)
When I booted it up, it came to the main launcher (it didn't take me through the setup wizard). It looks like the last user did a full wipe (maybe not, because I thoguht that would make the setup wizard popup if they did). It was running 2.2.1 (I think) and had an update for 2.2.2 immediately ready to install. So, I let it install the update, which went smoothly and it's now running 2.2.2, with baseband 32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.12_7 and kernel 2.6.32.9-27240-gbca5320android-build apa26 #1.
I have been patiently waiting for my gingerbread update, and it has not arrived. I figured since 2.3.4 was rolling out, they stopped 2.3.3 updates and that was why I didn't get it. Now that 2.3.4 has rolled out, I still haven't got any updates, even after doing a checkin.
Does anyone have any ideas why I am being forgotten, and how I can go about updating my phone? I will not root or unlock the bootloader - I'm keeping this thing 100% stock and not willing to take any risks with it.
Thanks in advance,
Mike
Update don't get push to everyone at the same time. Be patient
OK, thanks. So it might be normal that I haven't gotten 2.2.3, let alone 2.3.3 yet? From what I've been seeing in other threads, the OTA update being pushed out now is from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, so that wouldn't work directly from 2.2.2
You can always do a manual update and not have to wait for the OTA. Just download the corresponding files and rename it to "update.zip" and place on your SD card. Boot into recovery and apply update.zip. You remain 100% stock, but no wait.
And no, you need to go to 2.2 before going to 2.3.3 before going to 2.3.4. The OTA's are generally incremental updates.

Android OTA updates?

I have a nexus one on android 2.2.1, when 2.2 was release i received the update pretty quickly.
However i have stayed on 2.2.1 ever since
With members posting OTA released of 2.3.4 im like wtf!
I have tried to install the updates manually by: update.zip on root and applying in the recovery screen - this has never worked for me, i get a verification error
Now im posting this in the hope that someone can help me update please!!!
Note: My n1 is not rooted and i would like it to stay like that also im only interested in updating to stock roms.
p.s. i try the *#*#2432546#*#* nearly everyday to check for updates.
p.p.s. im from the UK and am on Vodafone if that makes a difference.
Many Thanks
Vodafone use their own tweaked version of Android, and so you have to wait for Vodafone to tweak the update before you get it...
You can use the passimg method to put a completely stock Google Android on your phone, but will lose some data doing it...
Thanks for the post danger-rat, i didnt know vodafone did that.
Will look into passimg.
Cheers
For anyone else having this problem i have found a great guide on how to go from a vodafone rom to a google stock rom
http://ossadmin.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/goodbye-vodafone-uk-nexus-one-rom/
I haven't tried this yet but will soon and update to whether it works.
The above method works, the only problem i had was the passimg rom gave "Main Version is Order" error.
This was resolved by using the rom from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059116
I am now on android 2.3.4 google rom, still unrooted

[Q] Updating from Android 2.2 to 2.3.4

Just got a shiny new Nexus 1 today, which out of the box is running Android 2.2. I'm wanting to update to 2.3.4 or whatever the latest OTA version is, and I'm too impatient to wait for any automatic OTA updates. When talking to a friend who also has a Nexus 1, when he asked me for my build number, I realised it's nothing like what he was expecting, or the build numbers for OTA updates like I've been seeing on the forums.
With a build number that looks quite different to what most people are posting about on the forums, I don't really want to try any manual updates in case it gives me a one-way ticket to brickville. I've tried using *#*#CHECKIN#*#* from the phone dialer, get a notification saying "checkin succeeded", but no system updates.
My About Phone screen is:
Model Number: Nexus One
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband version: 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-27227-g3c98b0d [email protected] #1
Build Number: 2.16.405.1 CL223106 release-keys
As long as you have Nexus One, any build for Nexus One will work.
Use PASSIMG method to move completely to a new system, use "root, install custom recovery, back up everything, install whatever you want" method if you want to keep a backup of your current system.

The phone is completely stock and unrooted, and I'm wanting to keep the stock ROM (for now), so I was going to manually flash the OTA updates. But without being able to figure out what version/build I'm running now, I'm not sure which update(s) I need to push.
i think you need to activate the phone with google servers first...
there is a code for that ... i forgot.. search here...
and then they will send you the ota update
Your issue is that you have a custom build from a carrier. I have no idea what is custom, but it isn't the factory shipped Android version that most of us have. So, you will need to do that passimg method that Jack_R1 mentioned, which will take you to a real stock state and then you will receive the OTA updates.
You can still keep everything stock and non-rooted (although, stock will now be subjective for your phone and the carrier might not be willing to honor the warranty).

The phone was bought out-right through mobicity.com.au, so carrier warranties isn't an issue. Because it was not a carrier-locked phone, that's why I'm a little surprised that it's a non-standard ROM. Is there any walk-throughs or guides as to how to flash a stock ROM using passimg? And links to a flashable stock ROM? I did a bit of a forum search and didn't come up with anything other than "use passimg to flash blahblahblah".
Read my signature, please. Everything's in the Wiki. Follow "Unroot/restore" guide, PASSIMG method.

Awesome thanks, I must have missed that when I was looking through the wiki. This works on the stock recovery, yes?
This is on the bootloader level, so the recovery or any part of the current ROM doesn't matter at all. It replaces the recovery too (with stock one).
Great success! Flashed a stock ROM as per the Wiki and it's now downloading/installing the OTA update to 2.3.4 \o/
Thanks for the help

Bionic ICS Update Newb Installer

Bionic
Verizon network
System Info: 6.7.2231.xt875
Android version: 4.0.4
Build Number: 6.7.2_223
So I got fed up with the phone as it was and updated it to the info above. I have never done this before and just did it following the info instructions on droidhive. Didnt do anything more than back up contacts and downloaded the ICS leak and installed it with out bootstrap this or bootloader that or anything. Probably did more than I should have as I dont undertand anything about rooting or ROMS or anything else.
Now my understanding from reading here is when and if Verizon does a OTA upgrade I will not either 1) recieve notification nor 2) be able to download it is that correct? I also cannot go back to my old build since I didnt , insert magic special thing I should have downloaded or installed prior to me updating, is that correct also? Can I do further upgrades that I have been reading about on this forum as written and in theory if I follow the instructions should be ok? or do I need to go back to the old build (if possible) then work my way back up?
I probably should have left well enough alone but I was getting so pissed with my phone and I tell you since I upgraded to that leak it runs very nice with a few hiccups when I try and run different apps. Figure if I screw it up too bad I can always get the Samsung Siii...and not mess with it...thanks for entertaining this newb!!
Take a look at this thread. It shows how to get back to .905, or to go to newer versions without losing your data. As of right now, I suggest going with the .232 leak, which is the latest you can go to while still being able to return your phone to gingerbread.

I agree.. if you are running 223 right now.. i would stick with it till the ota. You might not recieve notification but either way, you will be able to dl the image and load it the same was as you did with 223. seeing as how it will be signed it shouldn't be a problem. I have been running 223 for a few days now and overall i'm very happy with it. i just wish that i could turn the 4g off sometimes because it's a beast on the battery in my area..
I'm Loving the .223 update. It has made my Bionic into the phone Verizon should have provided me from day one!!! It isn't perfect, but it is darn good, miles, yards, acres, even years ahead of Gingerbread.

Guys still running above on the phone but have read of some upgrade/ROMs that I'd like to do, but it says I need to be rooted and I never rooted even when I did the upgrade shown above. Everything Im reading on how to root is assuming Im on the stock GB does it matter that Im not on GB and I still can do it on ICS the same way? Please advise on steps to root it now so I can continue upgrading and installing ROMS...thanks!
