Ok so I got a computer from my uncle, yet it will not work. I have 3 ide, which 2 are eide. Those for some reason will not allow me to connect any hdd or cd drive. I have 3 hard drives and 3 cd drives. 2 hdd are idea and the other is sata. all the cd drives are ide. Please give me full instructions as to how to set this up. I know a lot about this stuff, but I can't figure this out so no dumb replies like check the jumpers. I know that. I already checked cables and upgraded the bios. The motherboard is an asus p5wd2 premium. Thanks.
Check the BIOS settings if you don't have the HDs set up in RAID by any chance.
done. the sata is set up to be a standard ide
hmmm...I know you said no stupid responses, but I once spent $200 when the problem was just a cable. Have the 2 CD drives connected with one IDE cable in cable select mode, then the two IDE HDs also in Cable select, and the SATA on the separate cable.
Also, are there any error messages coming up when booting or something?
I tried every jumper wetting within reason. I called asus and they said eide is for external ide or something like that. Whicjlh makes no sense. And im getting primary master doesn't not support Atahi or something like that

Have you tried with just one hard disk at a time? You need to isolate the problem first, and my years of experience tells me that once you've figured out which one is the broken link, then solve the problem one at a time.
Also reset your BIOS just in case.
Jumper settings for IDE is very fickle. Leave it on cable select for maximum compatibility.

BUT WAIT! nothing is detected! go to boot settings and select the boot order... guess what... EVERYTHING is being read. like seriously WTF?! i am so angry why cant one part of the bios see the drives but not the other?

Try using different cables for primary and secondary. Put the pins back to default/cable select for the drives. Test out each drive and make sure that they work first.

no duh. i know my drives work. cause if i put them on the ide primary connection on the motherboard they are all seen. but when i put them in the eide primary and secondary connection they are not found at least not completely like mentioned before.
Try putting everything in the secondary port. There might be a problem with the port.
If the secondary port works, then there is something wrong with your motherboard.

Hmmm...
1. Does the BIOS sees all your drives?
2. Re-installing XP after that will help if #1's answer is yes.

haha yeah i saw the fb pic. but thats why i asked if it was 32 or 64 bit cause i had to install the right version for my computer. yeah just plug it in and hit connect and your good to go. doesnt cost anything if you have a data plan. not much lag no. anyways... lol. back on the thread subject. i really dont know but it doesnt look that hard to be able to get this to work. if we can then i think this would be awsome. great find!!!

if i just new where the init.d folder is on our rom, (i cant find it) i would make an androidupdate.tar to push the 10bootanimation file to that location. Then all you would need to do is create a folder on your sd card called bootanimation.
so, i guess the question would be where do we put the script file...
Firstly you should edit the file, we don't need to mount and umount the sdcard.
make it easy and just add the call to the sysinit.rc and put the sh file is /system/bin.
I'm going to put this in my next ecliar build..

Funny lol...
I heard steam announced a mac version of steam Offically.
Also heard they saw linux.so's among some of their games, may be coming to linux too..but who knows.
Not quite sure i'm gonna do about this laptop...
I hope linux gets as much support. It would probably make me want to go, but some things in Windows 7, I must say, make me want to say.
Also, funny story, I did mess around with Ubuntu(7.x) in 9th grade, and I really did try to run steam in wine. It ran but then a few weeks later it quit.
So I'm guessing there is a lot of Linux guys here and I have just bought a new HDD for installing Linux. So what do you guys recommend for a total newbie (with only Linux that is) like me?
Anything else than Ubuntu
Thanks
I reckon Ubuntu is your best bet Pretty n00b friendly

Yep you would either need another harddrive or to partition your harddrive or to run in a VM
i was just gonna make another partition, and if i do, and it installs, will it automatically ask me which to boot from when i power it on?

Oh okay. If you try something "exotic" let us know your feedback!! I am going to do a reinstall on my computer soon and was thinking of switching away from Ubuntu just for the sake of trying something new so I'd like to hear some objective reviews.

Personally it's only the GUI I want to have some variety in so I'm trying out "Xubuntu" which I think is Ubuntu with XDE desktop-thing-which-I-don't-remember-what's-called-thing xD I did read about openSUSE but it was too much like Ubuntu I think
For a complete noob, Ubuntu is the way to go. It'll get you started pretty quick and the interface is just a matter of choice. If you want something that's uberHaxX0rZ, try installing a tiling Window Manager such as awesome instead of Gnome (which is default in Ubuntu).
I myself use Arch Linux with gnome-panel and Compiz as a standalone Window Manager and I'm loving it!
I myself am an Ubuntu man. I'm currently digging the Ubuntu 10.10 beta. 2 weeks until the final release!
I myself is trying to use the default window manager in Kubuntu but I can't get it working It's driving me crazy :/ It just says that non of the effects could be enabled...

This usually happens because the drivers for your graphics card aren't installed properly (or the card is ancient).
This is exactly one of the things why I personally dislike Ubuntu. If you're lucky, it'll work like a charm, but if you're not, you're gonna spend hours and hours trying to get it to work.
Either way, you can probably fix it by downloading and installing proprietary drivers for your card, since the open source ones probably don't work with your card. Though on the other hand, maybe you need to use opensource ones because the proprietary ones that installed automatically don't work? Who knows?
I have a 16GB flash drive sent from HP as a restore drive. I no longer have the laptop and would like to use the flash drive as my current laptops restore device. It is showing everywhere as read only. I have already opened the flash drive to see if they put a switch inside. Which they didn't. So any help with this would be appreciated.

nothing is there. It doesn't come up with read-only or any options like that. I have tried low level format. Destructive partitioning in Unix. Many things. I am really starting to think the hardware itself is like ROM instead of RAM. I dunno

No - install a Linux Live image onto a spare USB stick and just boot the laptop off that. It will give you full access to the hard-drive and you can get any data you need off it.
Take Ownership
the live cd doesn't touch your hard drive as far as formatting goes.
Another option that is something extremely helpful all the time anyway is the take ownership registry hack. I've provided the link below. all you have to do is extract, open the 'Add Take Ownership Option.reg' file and boom its in. then you right click on the folder you need access to and click 'Take Ownership'. Depending on how many files are in the folder and the processor it could take awhile. Basically it is doing the same thing you would do from the command line to take ownership but without all the fuss of having to manually do it for every single file. Hope this helps.
