Sorry is this isn't mobile related but usually I just stay old school and throw xp pro and find drivers on a pc but this is a laptop that I just fixed and need the info still on the hard drive. It's about three years old no restore disk at all, no internet except my phone, no disc burn capabilities, and tried to override through safe boot to no avail. Googled the crap outta this, any help would be outstanding, thanx lol, kinda mobile related:-o

How about using a Linux USB Live system?
Won't I have to reformat the hard drive? Still need the info on it... I'm an old-school tech, so I'm not sure... plus I'd have to boot from phone, s3, no dab or any type of drivers... Hey thanx though, any info helps

No - install a Linux Live image onto a spare USB stick and just boot the laptop off that. It will give you full access to the hard-drive and you can get any data you need off it.
Take Ownership
the live cd doesn't touch your hard drive as far as formatting goes.
Another option that is something extremely helpful all the time anyway is the take ownership registry hack. I've provided the link below. all you have to do is extract, open the 'Add Take Ownership Option.reg' file and boom its in. then you right click on the folder you need access to and click 'Take Ownership'. Depending on how many files are in the folder and the processor it could take awhile. Basically it is doing the same thing you would do from the command line to take ownership but without all the fuss of having to manually do it for every single file. Hope this helps.

I have a 16GB flash drive sent from HP as a restore drive. I no longer have the laptop and would like to use the flash drive as my current laptops restore device. It is showing everywhere as read only. I have already opened the flash drive to see if they put a switch inside. Which they didn't. So any help with this would be appreciated.
Have you tried formatting it???

Yep. It won't let me. I can't even remove the partition and add it back. In computer management it says the entire drive is read only
Hmm... Perhaps then the hardware is actulay only read only....
Seeing that they sent it you as a restore drive

nothing is there. It doesn't come up with read-only or any options like that. I have tried low level format. Destructive partitioning in Unix. Many things. I am really starting to think the hardware itself is like ROM instead of RAM. I dunno
Have you looked up any chip details, or identified a manufacturer?
Often, these devices have a "programming" tool that can be used to lock or unlock them. I know I can unbrand some of those free ones companies give out, since I have the programming tool.
If you can find the right tool, you might be half way there

Ok so I got a computer from my uncle, yet it will not work. I have 3 ide, which 2 are eide. Those for some reason will not allow me to connect any hdd or cd drive. I have 3 hard drives and 3 cd drives. 2 hdd are idea and the other is sata. all the cd drives are ide. Please give me full instructions as to how to set this up. I know a lot about this stuff, but I can't figure this out so no dumb replies like check the jumpers. I know that. I already checked cables and upgraded the bios. The motherboard is an asus p5wd2 premium. Thanks.
Check the BIOS settings if you don't have the HDs set up in RAID by any chance.
done. the sata is set up to be a standard ide
hmmm...I know you said no stupid responses, but I once spent $200 when the problem was just a cable. Have the 2 CD drives connected with one IDE cable in cable select mode, then the two IDE HDs also in Cable select, and the SATA on the separate cable.
Also, are there any error messages coming up when booting or something?
I tried every jumper wetting within reason. I called asus and they said eide is for external ide or something like that. Whicjlh makes no sense. And im getting primary master doesn't not support Atahi or something like that

Have you tried with just one hard disk at a time? You need to isolate the problem first, and my years of experience tells me that once you've figured out which one is the broken link, then solve the problem one at a time.
Also reset your BIOS just in case.
Jumper settings for IDE is very fickle. Leave it on cable select for maximum compatibility.

Try using different cables for primary and secondary. Put the pins back to default/cable select for the drives. Test out each drive and make sure that they work first.

no duh. i know my drives work. cause if i put them on the ide primary connection on the motherboard they are all seen. but when i put them in the eide primary and secondary connection they are not found at least not completely like mentioned before.
Try putting everything in the secondary port. There might be a problem with the port.
If the secondary port works, then there is something wrong with your motherboard.

Hmmm...
1. Does the BIOS sees all your drives?
2. Re-installing XP after that will help if #1's answer is yes.

hey i was wondering if someone would help me install ubuntu on my win7 hp laptop now i tried this erlier via the usb method but i almost killed my computer my computer restarted and i got a black screen of death and i went into recovery and it hung on automatic system repair for about 40min and i was about 2min away from doing a full wipe on my computer and starting over luckily it finished and my computer restarted and all is good now. so now im ready for round 2 however i would really like some outside help before i try and tackle this again blindly lol.
so would someone please pm me and ill send u my gtalk info.
thx in advance.
I would imagine ubuntu hasn't changed all that much since I last tried the distro. Plus editing partitions is almost universally the same so I'll help you one of these nights (Mon- Wed) if you don't get help from someone else before hand.
Edit: actually I'm back in my town again, so tonight could possibly work out as well depending on when you're free. (I'm free between ~7-10pm CST then I have some things to take care of)

Walk away man... you almost bricked your hero and with the help of xda members you got it back up. Be grateful. This is the general section. Plus its linux. Which is what you have in your hand. In turn which is a hero... which has....linux.... so yes it has to do with the hero....
Enough sarcasm?
®patience is a virtue©
Good to hear that you got it installed.
JFYI - Ubuntu has an option where it can be installed as a directory within Windows. I have not used that option, but it did come up when I installed it, last time.
yea ubuntu is pretty sweet kind of buggy though im glad i only did a 20gig partition lol
try running arch linux no bugs here

Edit: Which version did you install on your computer? x64 or i386 (32bit)
i installed ubuntu 11.0.4 64 bit the main bugs are wirless tether not working and after looking around in the ubuntu forums its something to do with the wireless drivers on ubuntu
Ok. First off I'm new here so be nice.. lol had to get that out of the way.
First off I'm out of my wits end.. I have been searching the internet for 2 days for information as to how to get this tablet up and running and as great as the info I have found, it's in pieces and I seem to be at the end of my rope so to say. I have downed so many thing thinking it's what I need I don't know what to use or not.
A friend of mine messed up his Tablet BAD and said if I can get it running it's mine, he is not good with fixing computers and such.
I'm able to get into the download screen (power - down vol ) recovery (power- up vol) When I turn it on it loops the Verizon wireless screen. Also the SD card is computer formatted as I thought that is how I was to do it, ugh,. There is no steps as to how or where to get it to the way it was. If I try to recover it gives me a ton of errors for cache and that it can't find files. I have Odin but can't see the tablet with it, heimdall-suite-1.3.2 helped me to get to the meat of the tablet. SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse but have not used it as I'm not sure how. I'm told that it needs to be FLASHED with the OS I guess. So what OS do I use, there are so many out there. And how do I do it? Would like to get the SD card back to normal too.
Thanks for reading and helping.. o' the version is 11.08 that I see no one has mentioned or does that matter. Am I In the right area? OR is it a Tab 2? or 7.7. or something else.. ugh

I have been having trouble for a long time with unusual stuff happening on my old Xperia Z2, my Acer laptop, other devices on my network, and now my new Z3 compact also and have a strong feeling my ex-partner is behind it. I went to four computer repair places, brought a new router and contacted a computer forensics company who said it would cost $3000 upwards to get to the bottom of before I pretty much lost hope of regaining my privacy. When I got my new Z3 I created new accounts (Gmail etc) with the exception of Facebook and I changed the email and password for that. When I factory reset my devices they don't seem to go back to the factory settings, this was especially evident on my laptop after having windows reinstalled the first time at a computer repair place and the second time myself from usb it still had the same desktop picture id downloaded as soon as I opened it. Factory reset my z3 earlier this evening and had been looking up USSD codes in the hope that that might succeed in properly resetting in (which it didn't) and came across this Vellamo app that assesses your device and gives you the stats and it came up saying my storage is Samsung, could this be at the bottom of it all? Help
Thought it might be helpful if I upload these too.
You might find that Sony uses Samsung storage chips in their devices.. I think most mobile manufacturers do..
I wouldn't find that too surprising to be honest and I doubt that it means you have been "hacked" as well..
Edit: Mine says the same, Samsung memory chip

If you're having issues with technology, try giving tomshardware.com a try. Their forums are filled with knowledgeable people that could help you if you provide enough information (then again though, any Q/A tech forum requires you to describe your problem in detail).
Cool thanks for that I'll check it out

Hate to revive old threads, but I have something you might be interested in; my storage isn't the same as yours. Here are the differences:
Manufacturer: Toshiba
Name: 016GE2
Size: 15.76GB
I do wonder if there are any performance differences between the two.
Also a question; is the storage used eMMC 5.0 or is it still a 4.xx model?
