Any way to *fix* a nandroid backup?

Hey guys, new here but I have been lurking for a while.
On Androidforums I have a longer thread detailing what I did, if you want details pm me, I can't post a link yet as I am a noob on this forum.
To make a long story short:
1. I had stock eclair, then rooted with "ryans oclf" and used the lagfix.
2. I decided to try a version of cognition (unhelpfuls kernal). So I backed up my current "rom" using rom managers (which was the stock kernal).
3. Realized that I didn't back anything up so I tried to revert to my backup.
4. relized that I didn't undo the lag fix, and because of this my stock eclair wouldn't restore via rom manger's update.zip file
5. was forced to get cognition running again
6. extraded the files from the .img nandroid bacups from my stock eclair (which is a PITA since the .img files aren't regular mountable .img files - took about an hour of searching)
7. Found the sql databases to restore my text messages and contacts from my stock eclair to this new cognition.
NOW, after a long intro, my question:
The .img files I extracted contained a file named linux.ex2. I assume that this file is where ryans oclf must have been storing the stuff that is causing the restore to fail (it actually completes, but never boots)
Is there any way I can manually repair this nandroid backup? I would like to so that I have a nandroid backup of my stock eclair rom.
BTW, I am pretty good at this kind of thing, but I am not a computer programmer.
I don't have a lot of background info directly related to andorid phones but I am learning quick. I am a Senior in electrical and computer engineering so I do have a light background in programming. luckily I knew enough about sql and command prompts and such to get as far as I did with recovering my contacts/text messages.
If what I want to do is possible I would love to give it a shot. Any help/tips/ideas from you guys would be awesome!

To me it sounds like your screwed. You did a double bummer.. (backup with LF on, restore a backup with LF ON on your already LF ON rom).
Will see if any other more experienced with backup can help you out, but my answer to you is to go stock and redo sorry.

yeah, well I am willing to try a few different things. I forgot to mention that right before I installed cognition the first time, I did remove the lag fix, I just undid the lagfix before I made the backup.
I have been using cognition for about a week now. I don't really mind it as it seems to work just fine, as It is in fact faster.
Last night after posting my post here I removed the voodoo lag fix and then I made a backup of my current installation of cognition.... So if I have any issues trying to do this I at least have a working/functioning cognition rom.
BTW: I have an unrelated question that is slightly related. If I have to use the odin one click restore at some point, does it clear my internal sd card as well? I see that it says it will clear user data, but doesn't specifically make a clear separation of the internal SD card on the captivate and the 2 gb they setup for the android partition.

A far faster method would be to Odin back to stock, root, then take a nandroid backup right away, then flash back to what ever rom you want. Time consuming, yes, but faster and easier than trying to mod a backup.

[Q] galaxy i9000 looping at bootup.. not getting past the glowing S

I have recently flashed the JVS firmware from samsung firmware, and then followed that up with this CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVS-v4.1-CWM3RFS, flashing via the PDA section in ODIN. My phone has been working perfectly for a few days, no problems at all, until right now when I've gone to restart the phone.. I was having troubles with the market, and I turned my phone off mid-download of an app.. I'm pretty sure it was mid-download and not mid-installation of it..
However, when I turn my phone back on, it'll show the Galaxy S I9000 screen, then go to the next screen with the glowing S, however after that, it just gives a quick, short vibration, and seems to turn off, then do it all over again..
What does this mean? Is there a way I can get out of it without re-flashing the entire firmware? I am still able to get into download mode, but I don't want to lose messages that I have saved on my phone..
Any help is greatly appreciated..

Ok, so I let the phone go for a while (around 10 minutes), of the screens cycling through as mentioned above, but now it seems to have actually found a way into the phone, and has now loaded up properly.. However, I'm still interested in what the problem could be on the phone??

are u using new market app?
its happened to me once and i reflashed whole firmware starting from 2.1 to 2.3.5 lol just to avoid sh*t like that

When I had 2.2 on there, I had the new market app, however after flashing 2.3.5, it had the old market, so I was downloading apps from the old market at the time..
What do you mean you re-flashed whole firmware from 2.1?

Anyone else have any ideas?

Try to wipe factory reset and wipe cache or try to flash rom again

Could be a corruption in the bootloader, if it happens again i would reflash. Otherwise just leave it i guess, maybe it was a one off

It happens pretty much all the time now.. I have reflashed the firmware a couple of times.. And it still seems to happen. What would wiping the cache remove? Will I lose any settings or anything that I have on the phone? I have been restoring backups made using titanium, however just apps and data, not system settings..
If it's the bootloader, is there any way of fixing that?

Ah that could be the problem. Sometimes when you restore backup they can conflict and thus cause issues like this...
Try only return the data, that works for me. Get app list from the market and after a backup move to external sd. Format internal sd card. Then do an Odin flash with repartition checked. This is designed to get you back to factory state, so you will loose everything. Make sure your backups are not on your internal sd when you format. Also before you flash i think its a good idea to put a copy of your nandroid backup into the internal sd. Or just use a nandroid backup from when you phone was working fine.
Deleting cache does not delete your settings usually, however when deleting dalvick cache it can take up to 30 mins (max i think) to start you phone, but usually its 5/10 mins.
Yes bootloader can be fixed just find a flashable bootloader with a rom or the directions given. Use search for this

Ok thanks for the tips Talon.. Firstly, this nandroid backup that I keep hearing about.. What exactly is that? Is that the backup that I do through Clockwork Mod Recovery? I'm also unsure how to return just the data to apps? I had a look at Titanium Backup, and the only data recovery option is for system data.. Everything else I think I can handle..

Yes nandroid backup is the backup through CWM. You should always do one BEFORE you flash anything on your phone. And keep them in a safe place and leave one in your internal sd card.
You should use titanium backup to backup up a single app at a time, not batch. This way you'll have more files and can choose which apps you want to return, and if you only want to return the data. (I have always done it this way, so i dont know if you can pick the apps you want to return if you do backup via batch.). Use the other app i suggested to keep the market links, so you download the app from market first then you install the data once its there.
I suggest you don't return any apps at first see how it goes, then add either a couple or one at a time, again only the app data. (Once you backuo the app individually, flash then, TB, backup/restore press on the app, restore, then pick data only...) If you go from froyo to GB i think you cant do it)

Thank you very much for your reply Talon. I am currently on JVS, and plan to re-flash this exact same firmware, which is the stock firmware, nothing custom..
As for what you've written, it's going to take me a few reads before I can get my head around it, but I just wanted to say thankyou for a quick and detailed reply. I think I might just bite the bullet and figure out which apps I actually use, and just work with them for now..
I'll post back soon hopefully with results.

After getting very frustrated with the phone, I've finally re-flashed back to a seemingly stock situation. Phone is running great, and all problems seem to be gone. Slowly re-downloading apps from the market as I feel that I need them, so I hopefully won't get any interference from the old backups I had..
One more question, how do you make your backups? If you say you don't use the batch mode in Titanium? I can't see any other way that's as easy..

As i said before, backup/restore click on the app you want to back up, and click backup. When you want to restore it, back to the menu, click on the app, click restore, then pick data only longer but safer
Change the location of TB to your exsd if you haven't already, then go to setting find, and it will make it default location

Restore lost contact and sms info?

Hi All
I need some help, i just upgraded from eclair to froyo thru Odin with build PDA DTJP5. I left all options blank i didnt do a reset or anything just a straight swap. I read somewhere on here that if you upgrade that way you wouldn't lose you contact, calendar, and sms info. Anyway did the upgrade and of course i cant find my contact, calendar or sms. All my app's are still there just no contacts and sms's
Any help would be much appreciated.

Also i have noticed that all fonts stayed the same and also the background picture which was was custom, also the my WiFi settings. So im not sure why some of it stayed and others have deleted. Could the file be sitting somewhere on the phone and when i did the update it didn't pick up the files?

Does anybody have any ideas? Or is this the one nobody knows on this forum?

are you sure that the rom you installed didn't make a wipe automatically?

It must of, i thought it wouldn't though because i just installed the stock rom and left all the options in Odin empty. So im not sure but i was wandering if maybe there was a way to find the file.

If I'm not wrong, in Odin you can't decide to or not to wipe system partition. That's a "feature" of the ROM. Some ROMs are in wipe/no wipe version. When updating the phone with KIES it automatically does wipe, but they are stock roms. So, i think, you are in the same case.

I also think your Odin-flashed ROM has automatically wiped your data, or at least overwritten part of it. Try backing them up with Titanium Backup to see if the .tar.gz of the backup contains your data (for example, \com.android.providers.contacts-20120208-133114.tar.gz\com.android.providers.contacts-20120208-133114.tar\data\data\com.android.providers.contacts\.\databases\ should contain a big contacts2.db file on my ICS, mine is 2MB).
Is it big? Open it with an sqlite browser or a simple hex editor, if you can find contact names, emails or whatever was in the old contact list, you can try restoring the backup and rebooting.

Pulling contacts from nandroid stock

Today I rooted my fiance's phone and put ICS on it. I made a nandroid of the stock ROM before I wiped it and put ICS on it. I didn't realize that most of her contacts were stored on the phone and were unsynced with her gmail.
Using Titanium Pro I can access her contact storage and restore it, but the AOKP handles contacts differently than stock, and won't restore the contacts. I also can't get the nandroid image to restore properly to try and export the contacts.
What should I do?
Update: I tried restoring the stock ROM and ran into a host of new problems that resulted in a bootloop so bad that it wouldn't get past the AT&T screen.

I can't stress how impossibly simple it is when you just sync them with google. You don't even have to think about backing up/restoring them EVER. Instead of just restoring the stock nandroid, you must flash back to stock first because you need the kernels to match when restoring a stock rom.

You also need the partition layout to match what is mapped in the kernel and framework...

Trust me, I know. It's my FIANCE'S phone, not mine. It didn't even occur to me to backup the contacts, because it wouldn't ever occur to me to keep them stored internally and not on Google's servers.
I used Titanium's ability to pull contacts from a nandroid and restored data only. It got almost all the contacts back.
I'm not restoring everything back to stock, not worth the pitfalls and potential bricking.

There isn't one chance of bricking if you don't flash bootloaders...

There are tools available to uncompress the nandroid images and grab the contacts database. Then just push it to the the proper place on the new rom, reboot and you're done.

Cyanogenmod, lost contacts, messages etc

Hi all,
I wanted to give cyanogenmod a go as I really liked the security guard idea so I used the HTC sync manager to backup my contacts and messages and set about getting cyanogen installed.
All went to plan (pretty much) until I tried to retrieve my contacts etc. I didn't realize the Sync Manager was dependant on Sense which obviously isn't there anymore so the phone won't sync with the software.
What can I do?
I think I can revert to stock if I can find an image and then retrieve the contacts, is there then another way to back everything up?
I hope you can help because my phone's looking very empty and sorry for itself

Sync your contacts with google and back up your messages with an app from the play store. I use SMS Backup and Restore.

Thanks, do I need to 'de-root' my phone or can I install a stock image? Would I get this image from HTC?

I went into bootloader and clockworkmod to try and restore the original rom from there, does cyanogen not make a backup of the previous rom?

No ROM makes a backup before it Flashs that is up to you to do yourself. You will have to flash a stock based ROM.

Thanks for the reply. I did a bit of reading before installing and CM seemed like a quick and easy option to get the job done and try an alternative ROM. I even said over on their forum that I had backed up using the Sync Manager and no one thought to mention that I wouldn't be able to restore any data. No one said make sure you take an image yourself because CM won't do it for you.
And to top it all off I'm not that happy with CM, the battery life is atrocious.
