[Q] Buying not working Galaxy S - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
On our auction portal someone sells Galaxy S. He says, it was ok, but after unsuccessfull flashing it stopped working. After switching on it shows only "logo". Is it destroyed or should I buy it and use some tools to flash new system?
My experiences starts and ends with flashing custom RomĀ“s to Touch HD. Will I be capable of repairing it? It is very cheap, so I would buy it if it is so...
Thank you

if the phone shows any sign of life it can be fixed
if the phone doesnt light up / screen turn on and just acts dead. then it is.
if you can get it cheap enough go for it, get a jig flash stock rom and sell on for a profit
some people dont know how to fix bricked phones so they just assume its fcuked and get rid of it

[Q]My captivate was bricked help!!!

First of all sorry for my bad English,I'm not a native. It happened when I was flashing back from i9000 rom to stock rom (I have no idea that it will brick my phone).I can't turn on my phone all I've got is black screen nothing shown up,no phone ! computer sign or Galaxy S logo.I've tried a several method to unbrick my phone but there is no luck for me.While I was trying to figured it out,my phone heated up like when you using it for a long time.Is there still a chance to get my phone back to work.I can't send it back to at&t,I'm not in the U.S.A.
Thanks

Will JIG really do the job ? I read some treads about this and it said JIG won't work if there are no phone!computer sign or galaxy S logo appear
anyway thanks for the help
Wouldn't hurt to try and you can make one for so cheap!
So...you get absolutely nothing out of it just a black screen and it heats up when plugged in, sounds like a brick to me. I'd still give a jig a try since they are easy to make and the parts are cheap, only when you try it take the battery out reinsert it, DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS, insert jig, then hold both volume buttons. If that doesn't work it's a brick. You can go directly through samsung for a warranty replacement. Never have to even have an at&t contact. depending on how you aquired the device they might replace it they might not. it might be iffy if you bought it used on ebay. Don't mention anything about a custom rom, say it happened using kies. If they don't replace it, go to mobiletechvideos.com he can jtag it for 50 u.s. Dollars plus shipping...

DEAD Galaxy Tab. Samsung Center said the Motherboard problem.

Hi all. My TAB is dead already. it's dead just normally not because of flashing or rooting process etc. The battery drain to below 10% before i go to sleep and left it without charging it. I don't think its the cause it's dead.
Btw, when i wake up tomorrow morning, i found it dead then, i connect it with the charger but nothing happen. no lights, no display, nothing show up.
After trying all the combination of keys that i found on google to wake it up, it still not helping.
For info, my Tab is already being rooted and flashed with Overcome 2.0.1 ROM from the first day i bought it a months ago. Its act like a normal before its really dead.
So, I send it to the Samsung Center (Malaysia). After a week, i got a call from them and they said my Tab Motherboard is fault/burn because of 3rd party software that i install on it. I think they mean the rooting & unlocking the Tab. So that, my warranty is VOID! and i need to pay around RM700 (USD 230.49) to change the motherboard if i want.
what you think guys? Does rooting/flashing a Rom will effect the hardware or its just their excuse?
..// sorry for my bad english btw.
i think by this money you better buy new tab .. how come you unlock your tab ? i thought all the tabs in malaysia are Unlocked .
did you try to keep it in charge for at least 4 hours and\or , in USB plug it to your computer and keep it plugging and see , ( this method may and may not work ) ..
but serious 700rm they are taik

A third party software making the tab's motherboard to get busted?! Honestly, can you believe that? If i were you, im going to fight it out with samsung!

You had overcome on it. Overcome allows for overclocking. Overclocking (even if you didn't do it) equals a voided warranty. it's made clear in every post that flashing the device voids a warranty. If you choose to fight, you won't win. This is why there are posts to restock the tab for sending back...

Yes Overclocking can destroy electronic components because of overheating. That is the main reason for me to remove overcome as my tab was abnormally warm compared to stock gb when I had gold flashed to it. I did not even touch any of the oc setting.....and may I add that I am in the Middle East where heat is an issue...

kinda similar with mine....now my gtab still on samsung centre. this morning tried to check it out and it was told that i will receive new korean battery & new machined
the customer service told that before i upgrade to gingerbread (also in samsung centre) my gtab is being rooted??
the question (in my case), is it possible to detect that my gtab was rooted since they (samsung centre) already upgrade it?
well alisabki, its kinda hard in your position....have you tried to look after the mother board on ebay/amazon perhaps? to get the alternatives price?
last night i just read (forgot the sources) that cost to build gtab is only $241 (part+labor)
come to think of it, i guess frequent flashing and trying new kernels may cause wear and tear to the tab. refers to my response here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14765324#post14765324
The service centre person told me they replaced the motherboard and the battery. I am staying stock for now.
Well folks,
Just pick up my gtab and it os i got new korean battery and new machine dunno what they mean with machine here i guess same with u, motherboard with free warranty power.
They said,"my gyab was being rooted" but they already upgrading to gingerbread so they helped me with free warranty.
Imho, my case happened because i had install couple application that required root such as adfree, quikreboot, etc and perhaps the officially gingerbread doesn't comfortable enough which is i haven't rooted
Fel good to be back with this magnificent 7
genuine asia gingerbread
I'm having a hard time believing that it's actually toast. If you'd like me to take a look at it, just PM me as I'm very familiar with fixing bricked TAB's in any condition.
I hard believe that they can recognize that you rooted your phone or whatever since they said to you that your motherboard is gone.........so, unfortunately it is also happened to me today, it's not the first one that i flash my tab but today i've hard bricked it, sent back to Vodafone, told me to wait 1 month (#[][]###[##!!)
Dammit, never brick a phone, well used to HTC never bought a Samsung and in all honesty i was thinking to change my beloved HD2 for a Galaxy S 2 but i've found very risky to flash those Samsung phones so changed idea and waiting for new HTC devices with bootloader not locked.
Will let you know for news from Vodafone but if they will say me that brick was because i've rooted it then i want proves of that, if they can see that then they can resurrect the phone without change motherboard...am i right?
Well, i love Overcome Rom. Its getting better and better. Yap. Like Pitbull, im also the battery-wh*re.. i dont care so much about its performance. Im not doing heavy stuff/work on it. i got my nexus one btw to trying or playing overclocking etc... im just using my tab to surfing, file transfering/dropbox, movies, and even games sometime which i think it's 1ghz power is still doing its job.
What is my really problem is they (samsung center) say my warranty is void because of 3rd party software that i install on it. i think its just their excuse. the overcome rom that i use is already a month old. nothing wrong with the 3rd party software that i've install.
Declan79, its possible to detect if we root it or not. in my case, they just change the motherboard and they will turn it on just like normal. for example, my pc dead because of the motherboard. i change it to the same model and walla.. its fixed! its the same concept..
the cost to change the motherboard is cost me around USD263.27 which is more expensive + no warranty. so what? everything is expensive in my country.
you're so lucky Declan. even you void the warranty by rooting it, u still got it repaired for free..

Galaxy Note bricked after JB flash

Hey everyone
I'm a bit lost as to how to get started with fixing my hard bricked phone. It occured when flashing a leaked JB rom and now won't turn on, not even in Download mode.
I'm in Australia but bought my phone in Malaysia so the local Samsung shop is refusing to repair it without replacing the main PCB. They advised that a repair would be possible without the hardware replacement, but it would be illegal for them to perform because of issues relating to the IMEI (WTF?).
I haven't been able to get any response out of the phone. The battery was very low when I flashed (terrible move, I know), is it possible that the battery now isn't charging and this is why I'm not able to go into Download mode? I have a few mates with the same phone so I could potentially try a charged battery in it...
All up - I'm guessing that I have to manually write to the EMMC.... Is this just a matter of obtaining a JIG cable and using Odin? I'd like to avoid opening the phone up, but I can do if it's my only option.
Cheers in advance
Paul

I'm assuming you only get an LED? ,If you are suffering Erase Cap there is very little that can be done at the stage you're at.
All information regarding Ecap can be found in that thread.
You may say hello in there and get somebody far wiser than me to pick it up..
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Unfortunately the phone is completely unresponsive (although it does warm up when plugged in!)
I'm guessing it's the EMMC bug rearing it's ugliest form and it now needs me to bit a JIT kit to rewrite to it directly... but it'll take me weeks to learn up on that and get the parts...
I'm guessing I need one of these bad boys to proceed:

Can anyone confirm/deny/comment? I'm gonna go out and grab myself an Ideos X5 to hold me over, but would love to go back to my Galaxy Note.
Leaked JB rom from where did you get that
Actually there is no leaked jb rom
Try using jig to enter download mode
Before flashing what ROM and Kernel are you on?

Sorry to learn about your mishap. I suggest you should not waste money on RIFFBOX as there is little chance you will be able to revive your device in the condition it is, and if you are not into electronics, and don't have hands on experience of soldering (i mean really thin wires), this will be useless for you. I am telling this from my experience as I have same bricked note with me. Had it jtagged, but could not get it revived because the bootloader in eMMC is damaged, so the only option is to replace eMMC, which is physically impossible without sophisticated high tech machinery, or to replace the motherboard carrying eMMC chip. That is not available anywhere (not even on eBay last I checked), except Samsung Service Center, and at least in my country, they are charging like USD400 for the motherboard. I read in another thread here (cannot find it now) that it cost another guy about US$200 for the same thing else where (I think it was in India).
How much are they charging for motherboard replacement? I think you should go for this option as even if somehow you get your note revived without mb replacement, it is highly likely you'll still end up with partially damaged eMMC chip.
how did you know that it s the emmc brick?, i have my phone hardbricked before when i tried to use swap partition, and i get no responce from the phone also, i though it was the emmc brick bug, but i get it worked only with jtag, and costed me around 20$ only, and it wasn't the emmc brick, it was hardbrick but without emmc chip corruption.
the only way the emmc brick ocures is by:
wiping or formatting while on unsafe kernel
any thing else isn't emmc brick, and i think this your condition, you have to try jtag dear.
Thanks for the responses guys It's much appreciated.
I've ordered myself a little USB JIG, will see how that goes and proceed from there!

[Q] Is my note hard bricked now?

This is going to be a long story.
Had my note with me for about 3 years now.. Was waiting for the warranty to expire before I rooted it but I just never got to it.. So I was on Stock ROM and kernel all this time.
So last Friday (3 days back) was its doomsday.. had just replied to a text message, locked the phone and that was the last time I saw it working :crying:
It had switched off and when I tried to switch it back on it was stuck in bootloop, on the 'samsung galaxy note n7000' screen to be precise.. did some googling, came to xda forums, got that I need to get me recovery.. Vol Up + Home + Power.. nothing.. it just restarted and bought me to the boot note n7000 screen.. searched this now on xda,. got that I need to check if I have the download mode.. Vol Down + Home + Power and voila its alive, I had the download option.
Now from various threads I got that the next step would be install a kernel with recovery option it and I felt most recommended were Phil'z kernels.. So that is what I did. I downloaded Odin v3.09 and (not able to post URLs since a new user) Philz kernel (PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT9-ORA-5.11.2.tar) but it always got stuck at zimage.. tried 3 diff cables and 4 diff usb ports.. turned out the culprit was Odin version.. downloaded v 1.30 and it worked.. I was able to flash it to Philz kernel with a pass in Odin.. Tried to see if I could get the recovery option now but nada.. still stuck at the boot logo screen. Tried other Philz kernels for n7000 to see if they would do the trick.. I tried (philz_touch_6.07.9-n7000.tar.md5) and (philz_touch_6.12.8-n7000.tar.md5) but both got stuck at zimage so I left it at the cwm6 one.
Now read other threads and I got that the way to go back to stock kernel and flash the stock rom as well.. so downloaded the stock indian JB Rom (N7000DDLSC_N7000ODDLSC_N7000DDLS6_HOME.tar.md5) from sammobile's firmware and this stock kernel (DDLRI N7000), can't figure out which thread I downloaded this from though. So I flashed the kernel first and it was a pass and the odin mode screen showed, custom bin count as 1 and current binary as samsung official. Next I tried to flash the stock rom but Odin got stuck at 'factoryfs.img'. Then dunno why I thought that stock kernel is bad and decided to go to back to Philz kernel.. the one that I was able to flash successfully. I did it via Odin and it was a pass, the phone restarted and it hasn't switched on since. I mean I don't have even the download mode now.
So in short, no recovery mode, no download mode, and no boot loop screen as well.. I have tried to see if its in deep freeze or not, I mean whether the screen is not displaying anything and still be able to go to download mode to see if ODIN is able to detect it but it ain't working. Also if I try to charge it, nothings displayed on the screen but it does get warm
Do I have any hope in reviving it on my own? I have tried to contact fellow xda mates here in gurgaon to see if they can lend me their usb jig yet to see their response.. Is it worth it to spend money to get one of my own? Any idea what the fault might me and if all's lost how much would samsung charge me on fixing it.
Samsung would definitely charge too much, but i dont see anything wrong that you might have done to end up in this situation. I would suggest you to use a fully charged battery first to see if you can access download or recovery mode and if you dont have spare battery try to use external charger to charge only battery outside of phone, insert in phone and try the download mode or the recovery mode. USB jig shouldn't be too expensive if you want to try that after charging the battery and you can also make USB jig yourself if you understand those things.
Cheers!!!
Well I am trying to figure out where to buy the resistors to buy from.. Dad has a soldering kit so should be able to use that.. Yes I am afraid Samsung will charge me a bomb for this.. and on top of it I had bought a new battery just a day before.. Now I don't have an external charger to charge the battery separately.. Doesn't the device heating up mean that its charging?

It may mean that its charging as there is no way to check, purchase these, very inexpensive:

Not advertising, not promoting just showing the picture. You would get it from any local shop.
Okay, will get one.. So you think there's still hope for my poor phone
Can't figure out why its lost its download screen.
Had gone on a work related trip hence the gap.. Got an external charger but didn't help.. same result..
Too much of a hassle to get the resistors where i live.. Have ordered one for myself now.. and that I believe is going to be my last hope or else I am going to have a very expensive paperweight.
Do you think it would be worth to get it checked by Samsung.. I hope they do give at least an estimate of the repair cost.
From what I have read in the forums here Samsung would charge around 260 $ on a new motherboard which would cost around 260$ and with the same amount I can buy a new Moto G.. so that's that.. waiting for the jig and then will make a call on what to do..
Please let me know if there is something else I can do to salvage this phone. Thanks

Yes, try the JIG and if that too doesn't work, get an estimate atleast from Samsung (no harm in it). There are always repair technicians in the famous market (if you know which place i am referring to)

Got the jig today.. Still nothing the screen remains black even if I plug in the jig.. No download mode.. Connecting it to pc after removing the jig, with ODIN on also doesn't show any sign of life.. Guess will take it to the samsung service center and will ask for their estimate.. If they charge a paisa above 5k going for the Moto G then..
The jig works, I tried it on me mum's old galaxy y so has to be the phone only.. Thanks Hawk for all the help.. and regarding the famous market I think you were referring to Gaffar isn't it

The jig works, I tried it on me mum's old galaxy y so has to be the phone only.. Thanks Hawk for all the help.. and regarding the famous market I think you were referring to Gaffar isn't it

That's nice.. its a always a worry that you might get ripped off there Let me visit the service center today and see what they come back with.. If all fails will PM you for your friends details and take it to him.
They are charging me 8k - 9k.. :crying:
The mobo has failed and needs replacement. Seems like its time to say to bbye to my good old note.. and to top it, I think Note has spoiled me as well.. I had a friends moto g to try its look and feel.. it seemed so puny compared to my note and didn't like it the way it was don't understand why didn't they give an expandable memory slot as well..
Looks like am going to shell out more than 20k for my new phone now Hawk do you mind PM'ing me the contact details of the guy you know in Gaffar market.. Have to go to CP today so might as well give it a shot there.

S3 Mini VE Hard bricked (DEAD)

So i have a S3 mini VE, and i was flashing a stock firmware on my phone suddenly the USB cable disconnected during the process (ODIN) now when i try to turn on the phone, it doesn't come on at all. the only way to get the phone on is to charge it (AC). but it goes into loop every 5 seconds. So when i take the battery outta the phone and then plug the charger in. It shows this message (See below) but won't go into loop. It's seriously weird. The button combo are fully dead.
So basically i can't get into the phone i tried every method, even tried USB JIG from eBay. i seriously don't know what's going on with the phone, i need help fixing this issue.
has this happened to anyone else?
Button combo (DEAD)
Flashing with ODIN (DEAD)
Download Mode (DEAD)
Recovery Mode (DEAD)
Connecting to PC (DEAD)
So i've done all this, so please don't tell me to do these again i've done em
Thanks!
Same problem
Man! How I understand you!
Recently I came up with a similar problem only with my Huawai Ascend mate 7. Even though I am able to connect the device in FASTBOOT mode and flash the recovery It just won't boot into it because there probably some mess up have happened to the device's partitions So in particular it is Hard bricked.
Reading a bit here about a hard bricking I think our best bet is to send the device to an Authorized service center. And what they can do is basically two things, first is use some so called "Hardware tool" to force the ROM re-flash. This is an ideal solution for us and ( as the Warranty is not applicable to our phones anymore) in this case we will pay less money, but we still have to . The other solution might be to replace the "Chip" or entire "Motherboard" and which might cost an arm and a leg. I am not sure it worth it then, maybe buying a new phone better and just sell this one for spares.
Anyway I am waiting for solution for me for some more time and then I will contact some authorized Huawei Service here in my City.
Haha better of just selling our device, i know for a fact i won't be able to fix it coz i tried everything i could, even USB JIG. Also tge repair service i seen will cost me around $30 which my phone is worth around that price. So im just gonna sell it off or i might just wait for couple of days to find a solution...
