Ok, I'm drunk... Don't flash anything when you're drunk... Word to the wise.
Ok, I tried to update Continuum 2.3.3 from MIUI... Totally ignored flashing back to stock and then redoing it... But, I tried to flash directly to Continuum and installed the bootloaders while MIUI is still loaded. Now, if I try to enter download mode the the 3 button combo, it acts like it tries to get to the battery icon but never does and goes to a static screen, then boots up. Everything works... everything, so it's not bricked. But, I can't get into download mode to Flash JI6.
Any advice?
Edit: Nevermind... It seems I've chanced upon a fix. If anyone ever has this issue, then don't use the 3 button combo. Hold the volume down and power button and the swiftly release the power button. This will kick you into download mode. Installing JI6 now.
Glad you learned a lesson from your mistake

You lost 3 button recovery because it changed with the 2.3.3 bootloaders. Volume down is dowload up is recovery.

the gingerbread bootloaders change both combos.
its in the instructions
download mode = vol Down + power
download mode = vol Down + USB
recovery mode = vol UP + power

Emm, and why did you do that?
Id recommend to go and reading flashing guide (pinned topic). Helps a lot.
Because I need to flash captivate kernel afterwards. I have to put phone in download mode after flashing jpk pda and csc. I use att captivate
Reboot with the button combo for download mode should work.

Yep, so it does here.
Yeah imma just let it reboot and put in download mode instead of taking out battery and put in download mode again as most people tell to do.
Release the buttons after the screen turns black, then you'll restart the phone normally, .. atleast it suppose too ;/
edit; i tried and did it before i posted this!

Oh. Than yeah, probably just hold power button.
Btw, im obviously not very competent in flashing captivate, but i would think that vibrant is somewhat closer on firmware side than international (JI6 froyo, or something if im not mistaken).
I'm... actually rather unsure of why you're so averted to just removing the battery
Thread moved to Q&A.
last night I restored my phone back to stock to install the continuum rom. After I flashed the boot loader for continuum my phone won't go into download mode when I try the the three button method. I am able to go into recovery by the volume power home methods while the phone Is on though. Any help is appreciated thanks.

New boot loaders new combo.
While phone is off
Vol + and power = recovery
vol- and power = download
thanks a lot! Don't know how i didnt notice that.
because it was in the instructions.....?
Glad you got it working. Please be sure you know what you are doing when you flash your phone. Would hate to see another brick. Thread closed
I have have flash many roms in the past without a problem so I am relatively experienced with it. This last time that I flashed it has become stuck on the first boot screen that shows GALAXY S GT-I900 in white and 'powered by DarkCore...' etc. I realize sometimes it takes a while for the first boot when flashing a new rom, bu this has been over 30 mins. I decided to try and boot into recovery and re-flash it, but it won't boot to recovery! I hold down volume up, home and power and it just cycles between screen off and the first boot screen and never gets to recovery. If anyone has any suggestions on what to do to fix it I would love to hear it. I fear something bad happened somehow.
Use the android SDK to boot into download mode via ADB or buy a jig from eBay if download mode isn't working dude, or you can try this....take battery out, hold vol up + home + power, and shove battery back in, it does get fiddly so its handy to have someone to help lol

Hello all, I have had my captivate for almost 2 years now and I am just now deciding to make the jump to rooting and getting a custom ROM put onto it. I have been reading about the processes available to root and flash and it seems like almost all of them need the phone to be restarted into certain types of modes and steps requiring the use of the lock or power button. The thing is.. for the past year the lock button on my cappy has not functioned. I have tried many fixed and the button just does not work. When I need to restart my phone I always just take the battery out, and upon putting it back in my phone turns right on. My question is, can I root and flash without needing to use this button, and if so, how? Thank you for all of the help!
To gain Root...
What Android Platform and Firmware are u running ??
If something before KK4 then try this... [APP]SuperOneClick.
Or see this... FuguRoot for i897 as posted in the Captivate Android Development. The [MOD] FuguRoot is just a kernel swap method. Just be sure to flash back the stock kernel that u r on right now after u have flashed the mod root kernel.
I am using the 2.3.5 kk4, so does that mean the second one will do for the root?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
Yep. U just need a .tar of the Stock KK4 Kernel.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
OR (instead of Stock KK4 Kernel), just use the .tar KK4 Corn Kernel version 7.0A, it is stable and has CWM Recovery and some extra stuff in the Recovery.... **** Matter of fact, u can get Root through that cwm recovery of that kernel. Just flash it through regular Odin. Boot into the recovery (and since ur power button is messed up) u can navigate through the cwm recovery with the "capacitive" buttons on the captivate. --- Menu= Down, Home= Up, Back arrow= Back, Search button= Select
(didn't think bout this option of using the capacitive buttons til today). ****

problem..
well aparrently my power button thinks it is continuously being held down, (which is not the case, I've checked). Therefore it will not go into download mode, only recovery mode.. This really is a let down because I downloaded all of the necessary files and was really stoked for this to work.. Unless you or anyone else has a suggestion I'm stuck.
If u have flashed the kernel with cwm, then try pulling ur battery, hold volume up and volume down at the same time, replace battery and the phone should boot. Continue to hold volume buttons until u see the at&t screen, then release. U should boot into cwm recovery.
Only thing now is...i am not sure, that since ur power button appears to be stuck all of the time, if u will be able to navigate and select effectively through cwm with the capacitive buttons...

Have you taken apart your captivate backing plate to get to the power button??
Does the power button work at all, any intermittent working? also how do you get your phone to wake from sleep?
anyways, I've posted about cleaning out a power button many times. i'll go grab a previous post and edit it for you.
Do this cleaning procedure at your own risk: Don't break anything.
It's really easy to use a small( I mean correct size for the screws) screwdriver and pull the back plate off the phone and give everything a good cleaning out. You won't believe the junk you find in there. Chances are there's junk up in the power button. I used to have power button issues till I took it apart and cleaned it mine would get stuck on, or work intermittently.
There is a guide(with pics) to tear it down and put it back together here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022
I've probably disassembled mine 3 or 4 times. Never had any trouble I only use 3 of the 6 screws to hold the back plate on. it's easier to deal with only three.
Also, an alternative method it to use your fingernail or thumbnail to peel back the plastic by the screen near the power button area. once you do this try your best to press your lips up to the phone and blow air through the crack. I use this method almost every two weeks to get my power button to behave properly.
I think it's possible to replace the power button, might require soldering. I'm not sure though, I've never needed to do it.

Well dont I have to first go into download mode to flash the kernel? I cant do that because I can basically only go to recovery mode.
see that's just the thing. I have taken off the housing multiple times, there is nothing on or around the button that is causing it not to press. in fact, I can press the button and nothing will happen. it's like the hardware is malfunctioned or something. Also I just use the no lock app to turn my display on whenever I need to and if I take out the battery as soon as I put it back in it powers back up.

U could use a Jig or ADB to reboot to download mode.
Or see mobiletechvideos.com for the repair of ur power button. They are very trustworthy and reliable and respected here on xda.

I currently have The Collective's AoCP build 3 Jelly Bean ROM on my Captivate. I need to go back to the Cyanogen 10 builds because it looks like they've fixed the lag issue. I came upon a really bad accident on my way to work and needed to call 911 ASAP. I unlocked my phone and hit the phone button and it must have taken 20 seconds for the dial pad to come up. I've gotta try something else...
My question is this. I can't get into recovery by turning the phone off and using the 2 or 3 button salute. I've tried volume up - power, volume down - power, and volume up&down - power. No dice. I've learned there is a 3buttonfix that I can download and install, but I read about it first and it says if you're running this bootloader or that bootloader don't use this fix because you WILL hard brick your device. I have no idea what bootloader I'm running and if I can't use this fix, what do I do to fix the issue? For future reference, how do I tell what boot loader I'm running?
The reason I want to MAKE SURE the 3 button salute works is I want to flash from AoCP to CM10 and if something goes wrong, I need to be able to do that. I can hold the power button down now, and choose reboot, then boot into recovery, and that works, but if I soft brick my device, that function won't do me any good.
Any guidance you pros out there have for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Don't use the 3 button fix. You are correct in that it will hard brick your phone. If adb works, you can use that to reboot into recovery. I think you can do that with a terminal emulator too ("su" first to get root access, then "reboot recovery").
There's not a way to tell which bootloader your on. If you want to know 100% without a doubt your on the latest, flash the kk4 stock ROM. Downside to that is you would have to start over on cm10 or any other aokp. Making a nandroid first will make it less painful.
Also, that dialer lag will happen with any ICS-JB ROM on this phone. It's pretty much unavoidable at this point. Have you ever done the recovery combination before? If not, then you may be doing it wrong. Hold down the volume buttons, and press the power button only until the screen turns on. Hold the volume keys down until you hit recovery.
Oh, duh, you're on AOcP. You should have a recovery option in your power menu under reboot.
Oh said:
I do have a recovery option int he power menu. But what if I soft brick my device? I have a rigged jig somewhere, but that wasn't reliable for me. Not because it doesn't work, but because I made it very, um, frugally.
So there is no way to know what boot loaders I'm on? Darn... I didn't do the original flashing. MobileTechVideos.com did the flashing after I hard bricked it where my jig no longer even worked.
Thanks all for your input, and anything else you may suggest.

THANK you very much for that info. Do you know of anyway for me to be able to boot into recovery mode using a key combination? I tried what was mentioned above (holding volume up-down after pressing the power until it boots into recovery, but it just goes right to the AoCP boot animation).
Maybe your holding the buttons too long when you try the button combo.

You may have already tried this in your many attempts but I'll still throw in my two cents.
Starting with power off hold all three buttons at the same time. First you should see the att splash screen and then your kernel splash screen. Then the phone should turn off. Keep holding the buttons til you see the att screen again and then release them all. That should get you into recovery. At least that is exactly how I get there besides of course the power menu.

Yes, I do appear to be missing download mode as well... What have I done? The phone runs just fine with AOCP The Collective, except it's just getting too laggy for me and I want to check out CM10's newest releases. BUT, I don't want to be flashing ROM's until I can boot into Recovery. I can REBOOT my phone from my Power menu once the phone boots up, but I can not get any button combination to work to boot me into recovery.
Regarding download mode... I can not enter download mode either. I power down, take battery out, remove SIM, place battery in phone hold volume up/down and insert usb cable. Just displays the battery charging meter...

I do get the white AT&T screen... It comes on, then flash to a black screen and then back to the same white at&t screen, then to The Collective boot animation. This wouldn't be a problem for me, but I do want to play with some other ROM's, but I don't want to without this working...

Find that jig you rigged up and see if that gets you into download mode. If so I suggest using a one-click back to kk4 and I'd get the one with boot loaders for good measure. Then see if you can do any of the button combos

Thanks for the suggestion... I downloaded a 1 click to KK4 and used my jig, which worked. Got really lucky, as something happened at the SET PIT table during the ODIN process and I had to start over. Luckily it didn't brick, but on the next boot I got the icon of a phone and a computer with a triangle in between those icons. I ran ODIN again after booting into download mode, and it took. I'm not running KK4 and I can do the 3 finger salute, so now I'm going to start over with rooting and moving to Jelly Bean. What a way to get the recovery back...
Thanks again for everyone's assistance.
