[Q] Car charger wrecked my phone? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay, so please be gentle on me, as I am a noob with Androids (but not a total tech noob, as I am an IT guy)
I have not flashed or rooted this phone. It is with Rogers, and I have updated it to Froyo.
My phone was working fine, and then I got this generic car/usb adapter. I used it for the first time today, as my phone was almost dead (less than 5 percent), and I plugged in my regular Captivate usb cable into it to charge my phone. It turned off, and I have not been able to get it to turn back on.
When I plug it in anywhere now, be it computer or anything, the phone goes to the "Downloading... do not disconnect from target" screen. My phone also gets really, really hot. Also, the screen starts to flash and flicker wildly, until it becomes a series of multicoloured lines. It proceeds to get really hot to the point that I feel compelled to unplug it for fear of burning down the house. If I unplug the usb while it is in mid flashing, then it returns to the "Downloading... do not disconnect from target screen" for a few seconds. It then turns off.
I can't get it to connect to Kies. I repeat, i have not done any rooting or flashing of the phone previously, as I do not like to take those risks.
I have come here because, although I have never done any modding myself, I read up on stuff here frequently. I have honestly searched these forums (and the web in general) but my keywords do not seem to provide me with the results (you try searching and see what you find!)
So I guess the real question is - is my phone done? That would really suck, as I only got it in December. Is it possible that the car charger has somehow fried the usb connection for my phone, or something else inside of it? I know that I have heard of this happening with Blackberries, where moisture gets in and creates bad connections between the charger and the circuits for the screen and creates a nasty short that both heats up the phone and ruins the screen.
Any help?

quite possible that the charger screwed it. or mixture of problems finalized by the charger..
congratulations! samsung has a 1 year warranty!
and on top of that, rogers has a AWESOME pda smartphone replacement plan that is free and included for all customers!
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/h...eless_0910_Eng-_-HandsetProtection_LowerBadge
keep your mouth shut about the generic charger, just say you used the regular one.

seriously read what rogers covers...
lost /stolen /broken /dropped / cracked....

Only problem is I got the phone from a friend of mine, not directly from Rogers. How does the policy work if I was not the one who purchased the phone? Sorry to sound so thick...
Any chance that there is another way around getting the phone fixed?

Ah - checked the IMEI through the Rogers site - turns out that the warranty has expired... crap...
Anybody else have any other suggestions? Is the phone done?

Wait a minute... these phones weren`t released until September though, so how could it be beyond manufacturer`s (or Rogers) 1 year warranty... maybe I just need to call them tomorrow and find out

well it may be your USB cable that screwed you if when you put it in it gives you download mode...
the phone does that through by applying a resistor between 2 pins...
so try a new cable, and attempt to flash stock with the odin one click downloader, (since you can get download mode).
[STOCK ROM] Odin3 One-Click Downloader and Drivers CAPTIVATE ONLY

Thanks - I think I may have hope indeed! I have since been able to test it out with my wife's Blackberry Bold wall charger (which in the past has been able to charge my Cappy).
It doesn't get me past the Download screen, BUT it also doesn't overheat my device and cause the screen to go all wiggy... so that is always a plus! Not sure if it is charging the battery or not (hopefully it is), but I consider that a sign that it may just be the cable and not the device!
Being Mother's day, I will have to wait until post-brunch festivities to confirm... Thank you sooo much for your help, TRusselo!

If it shows "downloading" that means its still doing something. Can you get into recovery mode?

I have a genetic car charger and have noticed the few times that I have used it my phone gets hot... Luckily it hasn't fried my phone yet, but I only use it as a last resort.
Guess I should get a non genetic charger.

Same here. Samsung wall charger works fine, but generic car charger gets it really hot. I only use the car charger for like 10-15 minutes at a time on long road trips because I'm afraid to fry it.

I have also had extreme heat while using a car charger. And experienced some malfunctions while it was happening (unable to search web or use maps) Once I unplugged from the charger I was able to use data again.

Was this a samsung car charger or generic?

Okay - so I tried an alternate USB cable, but had the same result where the screen just goes dead (does not even give me the wavy lines anymore). I then talked to the Samsung guys - here is the scoop they told me.
When a phone goes into download mode, it no longer charges the battery (apparently). As it is not charging the battery, this is apparently why my phone is getting so warm.
So when I plug the phone into the wall charger, it will power the screen (and allow me into download mode) but I can't get it any further.
With the USB set up, it apparently does not work the same way, as there apparently has to be enough juice in the phone for the computer to first recognize the device and then take it into download mode. Since my battery was fully drained, there is not enough power left in it to sustain it in download mode when I connect it to my phone.
The Samsung guy said that most likely, I accidentally triggered the download mode myself, and once the phone goes into download mode, that there is only one way to get out of download mode. I guess it is fully possible that I accidentally triggered it, but holding down all the keys long enough to do so seems a bit unlikely. The Samsung guys also told me to go to my local Rogers store, and ask them if I can swap them for a fully charged battery so I can get my phone up and running when I connect to my computer. I hope that this will work, and that I won't just end up with the same situation as I did before.
So I guess my question is, does this sound plausible to folks around these parts? I hope to find out later today when I can make the trip to a Rogers store to swap batteries, but just wanted to get a sense of how likely this explanation is.

I think the cheap cable ****ed up pins 4 and 5 on the usb port.making them touch or something, so now every usb cable simply acts as a jig and forces download mode.
But it wouldn't hurt to try the replacement battery from rogers then when it still does it you know it's a hardware issue. and a warranty replacement it is.

Samsung Car Charger (by Samsung, not generic) $3.39
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-CAD30...279A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1304949492&sr=8-1

studacris - I should have been more clear.
I had received the generic USB car charger adapter for free, but the cable itself that I used was the USB cable that I received with the phone. The adapter that I tried in the car would (technically) allow you to plug any USB device into it. Whether you should or not, I have learned the hard way - I of course should have known better.
So, my point in this message really is that the cable that physically connected to the phone was the same cable I have used since I got the phone, and not a different one. So hopefully it is not the case that it did not mess up pins 4 and 5 as you suggested... but I am aware that this may very well be the case.

For me I was using a third party car-to-usb converter with my Samsung cable. specifically this one from Verizon.
I have however used this one with out noticeable problems, though I will be paying closer attention next trip..

[Q] Milestone dead, no power

I was flashing the latest iceandfire rom, did a reboot and the Moto logo came up but it never booted. Holding the power button didn't do anything so I pulled the battery. Now there's nothing. The LCD never comes on, can't get into recovery or boot loader. No charging light, nothing...
This has happened to me before and I had it sent back to Motorola. They were able to reflash the phone, I know because I got the same phone back. How they managed to flash it without it powering up is a mystery to me but I know it's possible. Has anyone managed to do this? I would send it back to Moto again but this time, it's out of warranty.
Did you charge with USB cable? I had this once where USB charge completely failed. I just had to use my car charger and that fired the phone back up.
I had this happen to me also...use a Motorola brand (no copies) wall or car charger and leave it plugged in. My MS does this when it gets really close to 0% charged...
Sent from my Milestone using XDA Premium App
I don't think the battery is dead, it was full and I was plugged in while I did the flash. The charge light flicks on and then goes out when I plug any cable in but I'll give it a shot with the moto charger when I get home.
yeah, the phone's bricked... using all factory chargers and cables, it still doesn't power up.
I give up... tried all night to get it to the boot loader. I guess I'll be selling this thing for parts and use this iphone4 I got through Fido retentions until I figure out my next phone
Before you throw it away:
Try getting another (full) battery or another Milestone (to charge it), or something like this: (I am not allowed to post a link, so google: UNIVERSAL BATTERY CHARGER, select the first video in results).... charge it, then re-insert the battery and try to power on device holding d-pad UP + pressing power button.... it should bring you to bootloader mode, then connect usb cable and use RSDLITE to flash the appropriate SBF for your device and region..... and for ROMS (SBFs) google: milestone sbf, select the first link in results.... hope it helped... cheers....
Does the "McGiver" jumpstart thing using a usb cable with the device end cut and keeping some of the wires connected to the device in the battery compartment work on Milestone? I know a friend that could "unbrick" his Defy using this method....
Do you have a link? I remember reading this somewhere as well. It's worth a shot, not like the thing can be more dead. I still don't think it's the battery tho, it was full when I performed the flash.
Nevermind.... I found it, it didn't work... lol... oh well..
Sometimes the batteries memory will glitch
Not the battery, it was full when I did the flash and I tried jumping the battery terminals with a USB cable. It was good while it lasted but I already picked up a BNIB Captivate for $300 off Craigslist.
Anyone know what a Milestone sold for parts would be worth? It's about a year old and I would say the condition is 8.5-9.0/10

Before you sell it, take out the battery, SIM card and memory card, then leave it for AT LEAST 5 days. Then try again.
I have a similar problem with my milestone, at first I thought it was dead, then after a week I tried again (just on the off chance) and was able to get into the bootloader menu and reflash it.
There is something inside the Milestone that holds charge for several days, and pulling the battery for at least 5 days seems to clear it. This has happened 3 times with mine, and each time I was able to get it started again.
This may not work for you, it depends on exactly whats wrong with yours, but its worth a try.
there is a post from a guy looking for the motherboard... u might want to see that... sorry for ur device

Veryyy slow charging

Went to a music festival over the weekend and used a portable charger to charge my phone, this is the last time I remember my phone fully charging. Once it died and I got back home, my phone would occasionally say USB connected and not charge until it said USB disconnected. Now it doesn't say that anymore but it charges ridiculously slow...
-Overnight charging I got 40%
-Left my phone for 3 hours and got 11%
-Use my phone while it's plugging into the charger and the battery still lowers rather than charging.
I've tried putting it in Ultra power saving mode and charging it while it's off but there is no big difference, I'm mad cause this cable is supposed to be charging it super fast.. Writing this post while my phone is plugged in I've already lost 2%
Nothing is wrong with my cord or the plug I am using, it's all the same stuff I have been using before. Could there be a problem with the port or something? Helppp
My phone is also in great condition always had a case, and just got it this past April
*also my phone is rooted so I don't think I can use the warranty

Are you sure? Cords die easily. Can you confirm how many amps the cord and the plug are allowing to be pulled? I've seen different phones pull different amps from different cords and plugs.
You can un-root and get back to a clean phone if you want to take it back.

If you have tried other cables and get the same result, you may have a problem. However I have seen cords got from .44a to over 1.2a from two different phones though.

check the power brick your using, if its the Samsung one that came with the phone it should be like 2 amps if I remember. id suggest using another power brick to test. also if you have a usb 3 super speed port on a pc or laptop sometimes you can use device manager in windows (start menu, right click computer, manage, in the window that opens click device manager, expand the universal serial bus controllers heading, check though any devices that say hub and go to their power tab) to see how many amps something is pulling from a pc usb. the other option is that you might have a defective battery but I don't know for sure. these are just some ideas that may or may not work for you.

Sounds like the portable charger might have been able to adjust amperage or voltage. If that's the case the portable charger could have damaged your battery if it was wrong amp and too high of amps. I have a portable charger that even changes voltage that could ruin a device too if not on 5 volts.

It sounds like it could be a battery problem. More likely, it could be a problem with the software. I would back everything up and flash another ROM or bring it back to full stock.
Option 1:
Install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.bmw
It will tell you batter voltage and charging current.
Options 2:
Charge with phone powered off.
Thank you everyone for the replies, my phones been getting worse to the point where it sometimes wont charge.
I think what im going to do is flash back to stock and bring it in to samsung or something , but also i heard a rumor that towelroot doesnt void the knox warranty? if this is true i may just bring it in as is...only becuase when i connect my phone my laptop wont read it anymore either, i havent tried if odin will but im assuming it would, i just dont want my phone to end up bricking because of the bad connection
This sounds like an old problem with Samsung phones, including the Galaxy S series. My original Galaxy S did this, my S3 did this, my sister's S3 did this. On those phones it was the charging port that caused the problem. My sister had her port replaced and her phone is working fine again.
Although I don't know for sure if that's your problem, that would be my first guess.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it has to do with the charging port, my battery is fine and so are my cables, and it randomly keeps saying USB connected/disconnected and won't change when it's "connected"

Really Odd Issue

Alright, I noticed about 3-4 days ago that I was waking up in the morning to almost no charge gained on my phone. I figured my computer turned off or something and my phone just didn't get charged via the USB port. I've now realized that when using specific USB cords (Only one out of 5 that I have works without this issue at the moment), my phone charges for about 5 minutes and then goes into this weird mode where it displays the clock time as a screensaver sort of screen and it stops charging my phone WHILE being plugged in.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a steering wheel icon at the top left in my notifications that says my phone is in car mode. Before I can pull down to see what it is or go into the menu settings to see if I can disable it, it turns off and disables again. I went through my ROM toolbox and found no signs of "Car" or "Car Mode" applications installed since I remember seeing "Car" in most rom installations.
It's becoming very frustrating because most times, I plug in my USB cord and my phone begins to charge and then 2-3 minutes later it just stops and goes into that mode. Sometimes it's instant and sometimes it won't work at all. I don't think it's an internal phone problem though because I have a cheap USB cord I found in my closet that is flawless and doesn't bring me this issue.
What could this be? Is my HTC One on it's last legs or what? I don't have my upgrade for another year so I'm really hoping this isn't too serious. The USB cords I do own are in great condition and wouldn't all suddenly stop working at once, so I see no reason to blame those. If anyone is wondering, I'm using CyanogenMod 11 right now, but this is a fresh installation and previously was using a very stable ARHD 6.1 GPe ROM. I also don't think the rom's I'm using have anything to do with it.
I don't know much about this stuff so I'll just leave some other information if it's needed. I have the SuperCID thing done, my phone is rooted and my bootloader is unlocked obviously along with having S-Off. I'm also using TWRP's latest version.
Any help would be really, really appreciated...
Also, to add onto what I said about the screensaver/car mode:
When I unlock my phone while being plugged in and the car mode turns off, my phone doesn't go back to charging unless I un-plug the USB cord and re-plug it in. This is when it usually begins to stop charging seconds after putting it in.

I've been researching it and found a few similar issues and apparently there's no fixes for it. I'm more or less stuck with this for another year until my upgrade. There's a small fix for it but it's a pain in butt to remember:
I have to turn my HTC One off, plug it into the USB for charging and then turn it on and it'll charge correctly.
I've also noticed a major decline in battery life as well. I went from 78% to 71% in 10 minutes a bit ago. Really disappointing seeing as how I've already done so much to this phone I probably couldn't even sell it let alone have a conversation with HTC about it since I've killed any kind of warranty for it so badly.
Damn damn damn damn damn.

Asus Memopad (me176cx) dead?

The tablet is dead, it was suddenly. Won't charge or turn on and it's not recognised by the PC. Recovery mode (power button + volume-) doesn't work either.
I know that is not the screen, because the PC doesn't detect the tablet at all. I tried with another battery (my wife has the same tablet), but I had no luck. I also know that the charger and the usb cable are fine.
What else I can do, any ideas or suggestions?

I had the same symptoms after disconnecting and reconnecting battery,I hed to disconnect it for like an hour and then three times try to power on the tablet and it did power on. Maybe your battery is dead so after another hour you may try to use the other battery. If it will work, try to connect the batteries together so the dead one can get a little charge (but do some research I am not sure if it won't have a chance to damage anything) then the same after an hour connect try power on and if it powers on immediately give it a charge.

Just wondered if you had tried this and if so, how you got on? Asking because I bought my daughter one off ebay and it was working fine when I got it, am sure I recharged it once , she played it and then again in morning and thinks she played it till battery ran out. I have since tried charging via pc and mains power, and have disconnected battery twice (case was v. easy to remove so concerned this fault may be reason it was sold), but cannot get a flicker of a response on screen. i got my daughter this as she was desperate for an android tablet for mods for minecraft as I had bought her a Amazon Fire 7 and from what I could see just after xmas, it wasnt possible to root it or sideload at that time, and she said Amazon had no mods compared to the play store and she had been ecstatic with the mods she had found for her android for the short time she had it. I do know when I plug it into the wall charger that the motherboard area gets warm if its been plugged in for a while? Bit of a noob on this stuff, and off sick with probs with my nervous system so my concentration and memory can be a pia. Anyway I was wondering how I can find out if its goosed or what I can try? One of the batterys advertised on ebay is about £50 which seems steep to me, esp. if it doesnt fix it, and esp since I have been unable to work for a few years cos of this illness. I only bought the tablets cos I had extra money after I finally applied and got pip, and got it backdated. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced option for her for her minecraft? Should I go the tablet\notebook type route or can they not handle minecraft? Bit confused by these new notebooks esp touchscreen ones as new ones seem to have small amounts of ram yet are v. popular.
Thanks for advice\thoughts\feedback and let me know if I should start ,y own thread...I only jumped on this to see how he got on and then as I do nowadays with this illness, I then jumped from topic to topic that jumped into my head x sorry x

Firt I would try to trickle charge the battery.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS:
Remove the SD CARD. I forgot to do this and snapped my card straight in half removing the back cover.
This started happening to my ME176 as well but of course not until after I retired it and gave it to my mom.
I would start by letting it sit on the charger for about 30 minutes (since we don't know the current charge state and if the overcharge block is functioning). This will give it a slight charge if dead.
Disconnect charger and remove the back cover and disconnect the battery (as posted earlier). Push and hold the power button a few times even though there is no power.
It may take a few tries of disconnecting and reconnecting the battery before it decides to power up, so keep the cover off while doing this.

note 5 - USB not recognised and it never fast charge

Hello I have a note 5 - SM-N920C on stock M 6.0.1
about two months the phone stop fast charging and doesn't get recognised by the pc
the thing I tried :-
* try different USB cables ( 2 came with the phone - 2 new once )
* factory rest ( twice with wpie chashe )
* change the charger
I wanted to test other stock Roms but I can't get it recognised by odin .
and I have 2 note 5 all the cables work fine on the other one .

I seem to have same issue here.
I have the Note 5 from tmo(SM-N920T)
Baseband - N920TUVU2DPD1
Stock - 6.0.1
You have the exact same issues i've had. I also had issues where when i would have the phone plugged in ( to the wall adapter ) and rebooted it, it would think its a media device like a computer where it could share files and stuff... Also take like 5 hours to charge from 20%
Here I'll make this fix SUPER EASY..
1. Download Package Disabler PRO - I dont think it has to be the pro version but i bought it a long time ago
2. Search for 'power'
3. Disable 'com.sec.app.TransmitPowerService''
4. Reboot
I would add screenshots but as i dont have 10 posts im unable to post screenshots or links to the app in the playstore.
The wife's phone started this Saturday after updating. Also, hers beeps and has the charging blue wave as if she plugged the cable in. While actually charging, it disconnects and starts charging constantly.
The beep and blue wave is normal. The charging and no charging sounds like a faulty cord that's not making good connection
The beep and blue wave happens when she is not plugged in. Phone just sitting there not being charged or touched. We thought at first it was a bad cable, but we've tried several. Even does it on the wireless pad. Therefore I'm not sure it's the port. I think it's software related.
Have you tried safe mode?
Just a warning safe mode reset my wall paper and logged me out of some apps.

Did try safe mode and a factory reset. Sprint store I brought it to tried several cables and another factory reset with no luck so they ordered her a replacement. They weren't too interested in figuring it out. In fact, 3 other people came in with various issues and were just given the number to make an insurance claim without even looking at the phone.
I disabled that apk abd it detects all my fast chargers as fast ones. Where it didn't. If i re-enable it it stops workin
might be hardware issue, Try Wireless charger and see if it charges fast. if it charges good with wireless charger then you have to change you CHARGING PORT.

Had the same exact issue on a refurbished unit . Old note didn't do it, but had to exchange it due to adhesive glue coming up in upper left corner. I did multiple resets and finally went with the option of fresh install as not to import back my apps. It hasn't replicated our issue in the last few hours. I am hoping that takes care of it.
Did you by chance get a random gear VR screen prompting you to download the app and what not? I did and read others had the same issue and only way to get this to stop is to download it and then create an account, reboot and viola it solved it.
Stuff is crazy, love the phone but have had more issues with it over even El cheapo phones....

I got similar problem... now after 10 days I just can not go with this.
my youtube problem.

My NOTE 5 is thinking that is charging all the time. It drives me crazy.
With the USB cable it charges 1 time out of 20 and on a random day. I had to charge it via wireless. It wakes up all the time and can not use UBS.
Strange part is, that I can use my USB micro stick with my root and custom ROM. But that is it. No ODIN, no tranfer files.......
Did everything except change the USB port (it is on it's way). ( that will be my last resort)
ANY THOUGHTS.
I have a feeling that water damage was somewhere in there. (been driving with my bike on a rainy day and it looks like it got a little wet in my upper front pocket.
mine recognises fast charge very randomly. before it happened rarely but now it never shows fast charging with the original cable. the only thing that helped me was ordering a third party cable and using the original ac plug. let me know if that helps to any of you guys!
Ugh. N920a mine started this in March after having it maybe 3months. I called att and told them to send me a new one the other day. Unit arrived this morning. My opinion is its a bad USB port. This imho is the weakest link in Samsung devices-- this POS antiquated USB crap.
The thing would cycle CHARGING -- DISCONNECT, over and over. Wiggling the cord would affect the condition. Fast charge happened 1 out of 20 attempts.
I'll let you know how long the new unit lasts-- my most recent purchase is a wireless charger because, as stated this ***t is bound to happen again.
Unbelievable. My phone was totally fu**d. Than I sad I will fix it my self, so I bought the USB board and waited to get it. In the mean time I used it as normally, just wireless charging and that's it.
But after two weeks, the phone was getting a little better, not fixed, but due to custom ROM and a few tweaks, it did not turn on itself all the time.
But after I played quite a few games, (hitman) the phone did heat up all the time, and that my friends FIXed my problem. NOW the phone works as before the moister get to it.
I have my NOTE 5 back, yee.
SO when you have moister problem - play games.
Hey guys,
I had this exact problem - no more fast charging, no USB OTG or recognized by computer after
upgrade to Marshmallow. Tried multiple cords, different computers (Mac, and Windows), etc.
I sent it in for repair to Samsung and they 'fixed' it and are in the process of shipping it back
I put 'fix' in quotes because the repair tracking says it was solved, but I haven't received it back yet to
test. It should be coming in tomorrow.
Quick charge and USB issues have been fixed! IF you're still under warranty, I'd highly recommend sending it in.
