App idea... - Xoom Themes and Apps

Preferably, the ability to split the screen to run a system app side by side with a file browser.
Just as useful and maybe more possible might be an app that has a simple file browser in an overlaying window that you can resize, move around the screen, and scroll in.
But, even what I imagine to be the basic version could still be a great tool; a simple clipboard box that can show text on a popup that can be edited, recopied, and pasted into the opened app.
A combination of any or all of these would greatly enhance editing, development and file sharing capabilities of the Xoom.
Is it even possible?

The Notion Ink did that with its Eden firmware, but apart from that it haesnt been done.

Updates:
Changed Search UI so that it is no longer its own activity. This will allow the user to back out of the search box and still use the switcher on the bottom to switch between search, browse, and terminal.
Replaced pop up in search box with Search hint.
Corrected the trackball from defaulting to control key when changing Terminal prefs. Basically it will allow it to work as the enter key again after changing preferences.
Current users will have to change the preferences the first time they update in order to correct the issue if you previously had it.
menu> preferences> command key: select something other than jog ball
Updates 1.5:
Fixed Search UI bug
added preferences for List color, Text Size, and Selector Color
New:
Added ability to create sym links
Updates 1.6:
Email Support
Better thread processing to prevent system hangs and crashes.
Random amusement?
Updates 1.7:

Bugs: Symlinks Broke?
Not sure if symlink in the code is broken or maybe if its this new hero build 2.3.3 I tried to manually create a link and that fails as well.
Any Feedback on this one would be appreciated.

Cleaned up a lot of code
added some additional menu icons
Better Alert descriptions

THis app also remounts data and system as RW, I know I could type the mount command from the terminal every time, but it sure is a nice feature. It is worth the couple of bucks (Less than a damn beer)
Great app dev.
Dice
Like it, but some constructive criticism. Not really a fan of the GUI, but other than that, A+
What is it about the GUI that you do not like?
Icons seem pretty small and colors are a little boring, but you already stated in your OP you were going to change that so no biggie Once again, very nice app, looking forward to what this will achieve later on.
nice app. Great idea.
I know you said enter on sKB doesnt work.. true, but the trackball doesnt work for me either... had to open the hardware KB and enter from there.
Also, couldn't slide the slider to go back to file browser from the search bar. it has something to do with the hint bubble. If i hit back a couple of times to remove the bubble i can then move the slider again...
If you change the preferences by default the trackball will change.. u have to click command key under preferences and change it to something other than the track ball like the @ symbol or something.
As far as the search box goes that is a separate part of the app the slider will be disabled on it until you exit from search aka back button or search something. That is the way it is supposed to work.
I will change the default from preferences to something other than the track ball int he next release just an FYI for future once the new version is up you will have to initially re-assign the control Key to what you want it to be the first time due to the change

ok. done the trackball thingy- fixed- works fine now.
not so sure about the bigger icons- i prefer to use the trackball to scroll thru something as sensitive as root directories....
1 small gripe is that is i navigate thru a few directories i can forget where i am- there is no way of knowing what folder you are in? i expected it to come up up the top where the heading is:
eg. /data/data/com.wktmngr/
thanks for a great app.

Yeah there will be some notification to where u are in the next version. I had it in the title bar and was trying a new Idea for it that did not work to well so it will be back in the title bar next update. Its my work weekend 12 hour shifts 4 hour drives gives no real time to put an update out Monday Night -Tuesday at the latest
Also the next update will have the search method changed from its own activity and incorperate it in the search results page.. part of the reason it was the way i left it for the released version is issues with the soft keyboard never comming back after u close it. I think i have the issue solved though.
Would it be difficult to add a script execution and save function into it? So we could have a script saved and click and run it from inside the app?

well it will support running .sh files so you should be able to use the text editor and save your file as myfile.sh then launch through the file browser...
There will be an update coming out in the next 2 days that will allow you to create a new file without having to edit an exsiting file.
if you want just a data base for Script files though i would suggest looking into the app that has been develeoped called Gscript it is made specifically for that.
SO since updating to the New hero i cannot find my own app on the market... I am hoping it is just that they coded it so u cannot see your own apps since you cannot download them.. If anyone can search su or pub:"protocol-x" that has upgraded it would be great

I am not using hero though? I am running Cyanogen 3.5.
On another topic, would it be possible to implement a copy and paste function in the terminal? How about implementing some recognition of history in the terminal (i.e. in Ubuntu terminal, when I press the up arrow, the previous entry appears).
I love the app, thanks a lot.
1. after mounting r/w for both system/data and trying to copy/paste it *always* hangs and *never* completes the action
2. i would love the ability to open *any* file in a text editor, this is extremely important, or letting the user choose the associated editor/method to open the particular file type with.
3. load/run .sh scripts
4. after symlinking a file, could you present a 'ghost' file in that directory to represent it, and after clicking it, it would bring you to the actual file
i will be writing more within this post after i keep playing around with the app

I agree. I was expecting to be able to long-press any file and be presented with options to open as text or perhaps a send to option.
Open as
Well technically it does open any File as text. I can add the option in the context but was trying to cut down the context menu form being huge.
it is currently only set up to open readable files, i know i need to add the option for scripts and other file associations without an extension.
like for instance if u open an html page it will open in a web view but then you have the option to hit menu view source or edit. Same with any file that opens in the text editor.
copy/paste hang should be fixed i was working on adding better threading to fix that. if you continue to see issues let me know please.
I will look into the ghost file for symlinking, that is my fault i set it up more on a directory based not file based.
Will look into history for the terminal, Copy/paste may be a while as the terminal has has focusing issues with the touch screen.
There is a new update on the market as of now just a heads up nothing major alot of clean up and threading fixes and some amusement

Kinetic Scrolling Photo Viewer request

I have been searching for two days for a Photo Viewer app for Android 1.6 that has kinetic scrolling for albums.
Astro file manager has a built-in photo viewer that has a thumbnail ribbon at the bottom that works with kinetic scrolling action. And that is way cool, but I want to be able to scroll the full-size photos as well.
I think a couple of years ago the first-gen iPhones had this feature in their album viewer, may be wrong about that.
I have a G-1 and a MT3G that I would like to be able to view albums with a feature like this.
Would appreciate if anyone could point me in the right directions.
Has anyone seen anything like this? I found a version of HTCLay CSDI I think that has a cube that opens the gallery in a sort of kinetic preview, and it's the closest I've found so far. But it's not fullscreen.
Can someone help me out with this? Maybe mention if I'm on the right track, or if I need to be looking for something completely different?
One of the guys at work was showing off pictures on a larger device with gorgeous kinetic scrolling. I had severe envy yesterday.
What photo viewer app are you using?
Never really felt the need for anything like this. By "Kinetic" & "ribbon" you mean it shows them side-by-side at the bottom? I use Astro, and I love the photo viewer in it, but when I'm just looking at pictures, Gallery always does the job for me.

Astro has the ribbon at the bottom. 'Kinetic' is a term to describe the scrolling effect that you swipe across a field with your finger and it moves, and keeps on moving depending on how hard you swiped.
If you open a picture in a folder with multiple images with Astro, you can see the contents of the folder in the ribbon at the bottom of the current picture. If you don't see the ribbon, just touch at the bottom of the screen and it appears. Swipe on the ribbon and it will move with the 'Kinetic' effect.
It moves faster and for a longer time depending on how hard you swiped it. This allows you to move through the contents of a folder rapidly, which is especially useful for large folders.
Astro does allow you to swipe the actual full-screen image as well, but not 'Kineticly'. No matter how hard you swipe, the image just moves one at a time.
I'm looking for an application that allows Kineticly swiping the full screen image to move throught the pictures rapidly.

OHHHH! I see what you're saying now.
No idea. I think most Eclair ROMs do this in the default gallery, but I'm not sure. Other than that I wouldn't know anything, sorry.
Flashed CM5 test 3. NICE Gallery in there.
Kinetic album thumbnails, Nice swiping on the fullscreen photos.
I'm happy now.

Possible to select text without trackball?

Is there an app or hack I can apply to select text without using a trackball. something like the iphone with its magnifying glass
That was my biggest hurdle when switching from iPhone to Nexus 1. You can use your fingers to press and hold until the menu pops up, but then it's still pretty much the same thing as using the trackball.
The HTC desire has an excellent magnifying glass type of copy paste like iPhone. It's been talked about porting it to the nexus but it just hasn't happened yet. It probably needs all the sense UI frame work files along with it which is why we haven't seen it ported yet. Google's implementation is pretty lame, I'm not sure why they haven't improved it by now.
Clearly not the best solution but you can do.
menu->more->select text
then just select the text you want to copy
Well if you dont mind switching to sense theme all together you could give this ROM a try: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730290
As mentioned above it has a great text selection mod like the iphone, and the theme isn't so bad either
Depending on the app you're in you can double tap at the starting word and drag to the end word. It works in the Stock Messaging app on Froyo. Also in the browser.

There is a app called Picsay in the play store
Hi thanks for the reply. I thought you could use for instance the lasso tool and copy cut out to clipboard and then paste on another pic without additional third party apps.
you can lasso and share directly to certain apps, but the clipboard is not one of them, the work around would be to share to Samsung note app then select and hold to copy to clipboard, from there you should be able to paste it into any app which will accept it (there are very few apps that will accept pasting of images, the clipboard edge app is indispensable if your doing alot of this stuff)
Another option would be to share directly to your image editing app and then insert other image underneath.
The easiest way: display picture on the screen, pull out the s-pen, click smart select on menu, select part of picture with pen, pin to screen. Load your second picture, properly position your pinned picture, take screen shot. I'm sure there are many other ways using picture editors and stamp functions.
in case you might find it useful, Autodesk Sketchbook will allow you to composite the smart select directly over an existing session/image as a new layer via the share button in smart select. It will use the active sketchbook session (last opened document) and is the only one in my collection of sketching/note taking apps that allows this behavior. Its a pretty decent sketching app too.

Just figured it out if you're still interested. No 3rd party app or s pen needed. If you have both images saved to your gallery, open the main image. Then open the 3 dots (more options) in the upper right of the screen. Select "open in photo editor pro". Select "decoration" icon. Then select "images" and that will open up the gallery in bottom half of the screen for you to select the other image you want to add to the image you're in now. Hope this helps

How do you "pin to screen"? In my old Note 4 a few years back I could do this as you explained but in my new N8 it seems the option is not there.
I also made with the workaround described 2 posts back, but the option of pin to screen was much faster and I don't seem to find it anymore.
Edit: just to clarify, the "pin to screen" option is available if I use the rectangle smart select, if I use the lazo (which I use to crop a photo) then the pin to screen is not shown, this was available in Note 4, I don't see why removing it!!!

There seem to be at least 3 ReLaunch forks. The original ends at 1.3.8 (the easiest one to find--Google is your friend). There is then the sequence you are asking about, moving from 1.4 to now 1.4.8. I've attached 1.4.8 below. Don't know anything about it. The source is the Russian The-eBook.org forum and the original ReLaunch thread. Going back from the end of the thread, all earlier versions (all dropbox links) seem to not be available, just like 1.4.
Then there is ReLaunchX which supposedly takes up where the original 1.3.8 left off and renumbers the newer versions starting again with 1.0 (now at 2.x). The GitHub for ReLaunchX is here: https://github.com/Leszek111/ReLaunchX and the app is available on F-Droid: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.gacode.relaunchx/
You have many choices!

I just rooted using NM and I am using the default system. ReLaunch seems to have a very barebones interface, and I wish I could do certain things (the two main ones is to toggle visibility of the statusbar at will (making any application full screen) using some button or button combination, and the other is to change orientation.
What benefits are there to using a new version?
Thanks!

I don't think you can exercise much control over the visibility of the status bar--at least not in Android 2.1. App developers either choose full-screen as the default display mode or give a programmed option which regulates the size of the window in which the app is viewed (essentially covering the status bar). I'd like to be wrong about that and I'll keep looking around a little, but I am not hopeful.
Screen orientation is easily regulated with an app. Probably the best one for the NST is Rotation Locker (there's a copy attached to this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/themes-apps/app-reading-button-menu-t3815212).
You could theoretically assign a hardware button to the app. All it does is bring up a small menu (Portrait, Landscape, Auto). A simple tap on your choice makes the change, but a long-press sets up a background service that forces the change, even when apps want to resist. You'll see a notification that the service is running. You really need this for the NST because it does not much care for being in landscape mode and many apps will try to escape back into portrait with only a single tap on landscape.
Unfortunately the app suffers from a problem common to many in that it was not designed with e-ink devices in mind. Colors were used in the menu system and they are such that you don't see anything but the menu boxes! I've given you the correct order above, from top to bottom in the menu. A better and more general solution is to slightly darken the background color on all NST menus. This makes most of the offending "invisible" menu choices at least somewhat visible. The change is effected by replacing about 30 images in framework-res.apk. Two sets of images were prepared by someone on the Russian e-book forum. One is lighter and the other darker, but both are darker than the originals. I use the lighter ones.
Alternatively, if you don't expect to be running a lot of apps with potentially unreadable settings or menus but you would like a simple orientation toggle to assign to a hardware button, I could probably just extract that portion from my Reading Now menu app and assemble it as a stand-alone. It still relies on the Rotation Locker app, but you'd never see or interact with the menu, just press a hardware button.

You are correct about the status bar visibility, I think there is nothing you can do about it if any specific app forces that setting. There is a configuration setting for ReLaunch to not show the status bar, but even then PocketBook Reader will display it.
For the orientation right now I am resorting to starting APV PDF Viewer (which I have set to landscape,) and then starting PocketBook Reader. Because PocketBook doesn't force a specific setting, it will continue on Landscape until I go out and something else changes orientation to Portrait. Rotation Locker seems like the perfect solution to somewhat streamline orientation selection a bit more. Also, I think I'll manage by knowing which selection to press and not care about the lack of visibility of its menu.
Thank you for your kind offer to assemble that menu app with the toggle built in, but I'd hate you to spend time doing that. Instead, I'll investigate more and go through all the posts you have already provided! :good:
