Am I stupid if I upgrade from Nexus One to Captivate ?

Hi,
Just wanted to get some feedback from knowledgeable peeps around
My contract is up and was wondering if its a wise decision to switch from my utterly delightful Nexus One to more powerful Samsung Captivate
I like the flexibility and freedom to play around on my Nexus One, but the Super AMOLED and Faster GPU has been calling me to Samsung Captivate.
All the 2 cents are welcome.

it really depends on a few things:
can you survive without a trackball? if you do any remote desktop stuff, a trackball is almost essential. also some games work better with a trackball as opposed to your fat finger covering up most of the screen (including whatever you're trying to control).
do you currently not have a case on your n1? you'll def need one with the captivate (or any galaxy s phone), as they aren't built like the n1. they don't have a unibody design that resists overall damage to the phone. if you get a galaxy s device, i highly recommend getting a hard case for it.
can you live with not always having the latest and greatest developments on your device?being that the nexus is now the second google developer phone, you can almost guarantee that it'll have everything FIRST. any developing directly from google or the other XDA devs will most likely be implemented on the nexus before any other phone.
just a few things to consider. i'm sure someone will add some more...
you could also think of it this way: would you be willing to trade in your honda civic tuner (with nos, supercharger, and the works) for a mustang/camaro or equivalent?

I've actually seriously considered this (but for the Vibrant) and come to the conclusion that you will not be disappointed by either choice. One thing you could do is post a similar question in the Captivate forums but ask what people opinion of the captivate is from previous nexus one users.
On the note of the AMOLED screen and the gpu its a matter of importance? Do you play a lot of games? If so the gpu will definitely be a necessity. If you watch a lot of media the screen will be a must.
Do you mod/plan to mod your phone a lot? If so then the Nexus might still be the better choice.
Also the trackball is gone so there is no led notifications on the Galaxy S phones.

Well I havent had an opportunity/requirements to do any Remote Desktops so havent used trackball to its full potential.. but I love the trackball notifications.
I do have a hard case and a lovely one for my N1 [Seidio]. Yes I would ofcourse get a hard case for any phone that I buy.
Third point is really important. I am a CM source builder.. and I do that almost every 2 days from my laptop. I would hate to not be able to do that to the Captivate..

I had the UK version the Galaxy s and I have to say I was very disappointed. The lag problem is a massive issue after owning the Nexus and the Touchwiz is very cartoon like but that's a matter of opinion, and if you try and use Launcher Pro it starts to slow down even more. The gps another known issue does not work and the internet is slow. The screen is fab and so is the HD video but that's it. The build is poor and as for regular updates from Samsung ? well you know there history.
I always said that I would not have a Samsung for one reason or another but this looked great, but I'm bitterly disappointed and with Handsets like this coming out, it's going to put new owners of Android off.
So I have sent mine back and got a new Nexus as my daughter had my other and she prefers it to her IPhone 3GS........Good girl

If u love to flash and tweak, then the N1 will do the trick

Exactly. Its harder to tweak the galaxy series. I love my n1, but have been drooling over the captivate.

Gingerbread is just around the corner, and there will be a whole new wave of devices out that blow the SGS away. I see the Galaxy S as more of a side-grade, I'm afraid.

Don't you lose "unlimited" data if you upgrade your contract with ATT?

i think you can keep your unlimited data if you were grandfathered in.
anyway if you get the captivate you should flash stock android on it immediately. i played with a captivate 2 days ago, and it was actually not as smooth as the nexus running launcher pro. plus i hated the UI samsung put on there. the nexus is just so open and easy to tweak, i'd be a hard decision. plus have you seen the Desire HD yesterday? so many phoens are around the corner. i wont be tempted until something really blows away the nexus, like dual core CPU. the galaxy is still too close to matching the nexus specs, 1ghz, 512mb, etc.
you could save your upgrade. or use it on an iphone 4 and sell that thing for like 600 bucks profit.

So do I sell my IPhone Contract too..? I am not sure how selling of iPhone works.

I also looked at the Galaxy S series (although the Vibrant not the Captivate) but I prefer the trackball for being able to precisely edit text. I think that Gingerbread will make a world of difference and the N1will of course get it first... Samsung has a horrible history of updates and on a more personal level Touchwiz looks like a cartoon and I hate it. I LOVE stock (vanilla) android. Just my humble opinion.

One thing to highly consider is that the hummingbird processor is not as fast as ours in the n1 it may run at 1ghz but it doesn't process as fast, my wife has a vibrant and I've run several benchmarks on both devices and the n1 blows the vibrant away every single time.

The hummingbird 1ghz wrecks the snapdragon 1ghz (sadly) but the reason currently the n1 is winning is because of Froyo and the JIT. Just look at the quadrant scores pre-froyo

I took my Vibrant back for the fact that...
I missed the Track Ball.
I missed the sturdy, heavy build of the Nexus, the Vibrant is very cheap and plastic feeling.
I missed the Flash on the camera.
I just over all hope that a phone similar to the Nexus but with a larger screen is developed..

No you just sell the iPhone itself. You can remove the iPhone off your account anytime you want, even the day after you sign the new contract. All ATT cares about is that you pay your bill every month and fulfill your 2 years. So you can take the iPhone data plan off your account immediately.
It's an option to consider. Some people do it but if you aren't comfortable then don't worry about it.

Your joking right ? The only benchmark the n1 wins in is linpack . Cause of jit... quadrant we get 2200 with a hack without jit vs 1300 or so on n1? The sgs wins in almost every benchmark ..... the gpu totally smashes the n1... I've had both, n1 is a Tad faster feeling due to stock android ..... and jit ...
Gps works fine on my vibrant ...
N1 is awesome , but sgs wins hands down... especially soon with all 4 carriers having it... it'll have plenty mods.
Oh and it does not feel cheap ... not as sturdy as the n1 but n1 is heavier and will fall harder... also it comes with a extra cover for the back.. just awesome..
I love my n1, but my vibrant eats it alive.. especially in gpu .

I have both an and a captivate. N1 build quality is superb. N1 customization is awesome. Awesome dev support. Guaranteed firmeware support unlike samsung. You never know when samsung will stop upgrading. No guarantee they will get gingerbread neither. But n1 is getting outdated. But still my everyday phone.
However, captivate is a great device. Great samoled screen. Built quality is okay. Not as quality as n1. Very plasticee. At least captivate has the metal plate on the back to look cool. Vibrant all plastic. Not doggy the iphony lol. Sure this will get outdated soon but all devices will. It will matter whether u want the device now. You wait for the next device another one comes out. That's technology. There are mods on this device built by xda devs already. Already out putting crazy benchmark numbers. But not as smoothas the n1 on custom froyo. However cyanogen mod is in the works. They will be support by not comparable to n1. So far i like both device. Sure track ball and froyo is nice. But having the capability to play and watch games and movies with hd quality nice too. So i wouldn't completely cross out captivate or galaxy s. I just wish i had the euro version though. They seem to have more devs working on it. Captivate and vibrabrant dev is little slower then galaxy s. But can't beat a $100 for a fine piece of technology.
Oh btw, i upgraded both of my parents line with iphone 4 and sold those suckers for 600 bucks per pop. Save that money to buy something else when something better comes out. Perhaps nexus two. Lol. Or maybe the Htc desire hd/ace. I hope they release the quad band gsm version. Prob euros will be out late this year, hope i can't import a asian quad band or aussie quad band version.

Will the Bionic have a locked down bootloader like the droid x?

I have no knowledge on the subject, but I can only assume that it will.

Yeah, Moto confirmed it. It can still be rooted though (I'm assuming) , which is the most important thing to me personally.

I love this community, and the ability to try others' work. I think Moto will keep their products locked to a degree. Done with them yet holding on to my Droid.

Who knows though now that Xoom is unlocked, maybe Moto finally got the hint. We can all wish, but until the release comes, we won't know for sure

The Atrix 4G got locked down, but hopefully we will have better luck..... My Droid Eris is feeling slower by the day, but I won't use my upgrade on a locked-down phone.

I remember reading from a few different places that the bionic has a good chance of being unlocked. That's because the chip they are using in the bionic vs. D2 and dx. The d2 and x have a certain chip that needs to locked down or something but since the bionic has the Tegra processor it won't have that special chip. I hope this is the case.

is this phone even worth getting? i'm due for an upgrade and they been trying to throw the iphone4 at me but i've been waiting for this...now i wonder if this is a waste of time... my eris is driving me crazy so i want something fairly soon...this phone seems to be the only worthy choice though for verizon customers...are there any other competitive options besides this phone without switching carriers?

Thunderbolt? They believe they have a root for it already. And for sure is unlocked. It's for sure gonna have a great dev community.

The atrix boot loader is signed not encrypted
I expect the same will happen to the bionic as its basically an atrix with less RAM and a larger screen

Good News!!! And I definitely want the Bionic because the Thunderbolt is essentially the Evo 4g with less battery but more ram(768mb vs 512mb). It also is essentially the same thing as the Droid Incredible, but with 512mb vs 768mb of ram.

devs are working to see if we can bypass it or something....but at least it isn't encrypted which gives the devs a slightly higher chance of finding a fix vs having the bootloader encrypted

Not to get get off topic but I wish the root population was larger. Then when motorola does encrypt their phones then it's not like the lesser 5% of the phone purchasers being upset about it. Me getting this phone depends on if it's unlocked or not. I have friends all the time ask me to root their phone. I have a few friends that run custom roms that I put on. Not one of them has had a problem(knock on wood) I don't see a big risk in rooting and flashing custom roms, especially with how easy it is nowadays. That's my 2 cents

I know that, but it's better news than if it was encrypted and/or had something similar to an e-Fuse, and that's what I meant in good news. I knew it wouldn't be the same as a Nexus S or Nexus One (which are Dev friendly), but my Eris had a bootloader (S-On) which so far as I can see is the same as a signed bootloader (correct me if I'm wrong). Hopefully, it'll just be a couple of weeks/months to crack it but (knock on wood) at least we won't be stuck with the situation Droid X owners have.

Also, unrelated note, but I played with a friends Atrix 4G for about 30 minutes, and a couple things......
Good
1. Fast as hell! (In apps, games, typing, etc) Very lag free! (see below)
2. In game, incredibly smooth and great looking screen. Better than other friend's Droid Incredible, and colors look nearly as good as my old Zune HD.
Bad
1. Home screen lags quite badly. My friend had lots of apps on desktop and though the Live wallpaper and app drawer were smooth, switching left to right was laggy.... Very nitpicky but annoying.
Overall, I still want the phone (more than before), and want Cyanogenmod on this thing badly!

Not really, the thunderbolt has a new generation snapdragon, between that and the extra ram, and better video processor, it's actually WAY faster than an Evo 4G. Out of the box quadrant scores are around 1975, and general performance is really much better than an Evo in every way. (not saying it's faster than a bionic obviously, but it definitely isn't the same thing as an Evo).

Thanks for clarifying. When I looked to check facts for the comparison, it only said 1 ghz Snapdragon, so I assumed the same CPU/GPU as the first gen.

still the tegra 2 is a faster processor ... otherwise its more of a wait and see...
I have decided to wait for the bionic instead of getting the thunderbolt... unless the tb comes out tomorrow... but that is very unlikly.

im so sick of seeing people compare the evo to the thunderbolt, first things first, LTE is better than WiMAX. Second of all the processor arent even close, and you know on the evo if you use a task killer, it might have 250mb or RAM free, when you do it on the bolt, you will have overmb free, it will never lag. ever. and the only time it will fall behind the bionic or atrix is gaming, thats it

Milestone slow? Advice needed

I know Milestone is now old. But due to my budget restrictions, I was planning to buy this device because of its hardware keyboard.
Now devices are available with better processors.
The milestone has 600mhz, does it ever gets slow and laggy?
I was considering this device because of its hardware keyboard and android. The android has a lot of apps but will the 600Mhz be able to handle sufficiently or should I consider devices with better processors and specs?

The Milestone is a very outdated phone. Your best bet would be to get a better phone, as this one is too outdated to be useful if you bought it now. Unless you're really stuck, budget-wise, in which case you can root the phone and install a custom ROM, that'll drastically improve the performance of the phone.
Try and get a better phone if you can, but if you can't, then rooting is your best bet.

It is a slow phone, I have it overclocked and it still slow

I was attracted by the H/W keyboard, although I don't email much.
So, the lag on Milestone noticable b'coz of the processor?
What are the successors of milestone, MS 2, bionic too?

For 190 euro? That seems quite expensive for such an old phone. There are certain flaws with the Milestone such as poor display performance (DSI errors). Successors to this phone were the Droid 2 and Droid 3 which just came out.

Honestly, I would go for something better. Unless you are really looking for a physical keyboard to text on that is. The HTC Desire Z/G2 is another physical keyboard slider that is better spec'd than the Milestone and less outdated. If you can get that I think it'd be a good deal.
If all you are doing is texting, then yes, the Milestone can be a good option. But for anything else, it is starting to become outdated and pales in comparison to other phones.

Honestly speaking, you should seriously wait for a new device or purchase something like the Samsung Galaxy S 2. Trust me the milestone is a little too outdated with dual core processors at 1.5GHz beginning to be rumoured about and milestones 550mhz processor not to mention the insufficient amount of ram - 256mb in comparison to others with like 1gb ram e.g. atrix, samsung galaxy s 2 i think. If you are patient and have the money I would wait to see what google will be unveiling soon (probably october 11 ctia or something) or even what apple is most likely unveiling on october 4th.

Milestone even though is outdated can be kept alive, but it involves flashing, tuning, trying, etc. And even after that it still has very small RAM.
If you prefer the looks and you have a _really_ cheap offer and you are short on money you might consider it buying. If not, just wait (as everyone else suggests ).

Milestone is showing its age bro. If u really want a qwerty android then htc desire Z or milestone 2 is for u.
Buy only if u've got a very good offer on the second hand milestone. U might have to do quite a bit of tweaking n roms testing to find sumthin for ur needs. Gud day

Would you recommend the Droid 3?

I recently bought an HTC Desire Z but was given the T-mobile model which doesn't suppport 850Mhz 3G, which is what my local network runs. The eBay seller has a Droid 3 XT883 that he can exchange my HTC for, would you recommend your Droid?
I really like the QWERTY keyboard on the HTC but there seems to be less in the way of ROMs for the Droid. Any other models you can suggest?

Its not a bad device, its got a solid cpu and ram which is still pretty speedy, the keyboard is one of the best available ( besides the droid 4's ), but in terms of roms and dev support its almost dead. They devs still around are still working very hard but sometimes a lot of things are outdated , and if you get brick it can be hard with limited support.

It is quite durable and reliable, easy to root as well, once hash develops the JB ROM it'll be a solid phone. I use mine day to day, on an ICS ROM, and it works well. However, doesn't mean I won't buy the fighter once is out, due to the fact that its a bit old. But I would recommend it.

Never even approach to this phone. It is the worst smartphone I have ever not only owned, but even held in my hand. This phone has managed to disappoint me not even in Motorola, but in whole Android. I'm pulling the thread to get brand new flagship on WP8 - thankfully we will never see WP8 on Motos. F..k Moto, damn droid!

the biggest pro to this phone, the keyboard, sucks for me. i've had 2 now and both have had problems with double pressing keys and some keys (particularly the question mark) not wanting to register. plus there's very little support. stay away
edit: on the pro side i can use it to open my beer bottles because of the metal bezel

DROID 3 - good specs, terrible support/updates. biggest drawback at the moment is the locked bootloader. i'm currently trying to decide whether to keep it (hoping we can actually get an OS update) or sell it.
if you're looking for the QWERTY keyboard and full 3G band support, have a look at the Xperia Pro mk16a. It's a good piece of equipment already running Jelly Bean.

Droid 3 could be good for you
If the following apply to you, the Droid 3 is a great phone:
1. You are OK with not having the latest and greatest version of Android
2. You don't mind rooting
3. 3G rather than 4G is OK for your purposes
Number two kind of applies to all Verizon Android phones in my book. They are so incredibly full of crapware as they come from Verizon that the hardware seems basically crippled by it. However rooting it and installing Titanium backup and then freezing all the crapware so it can't run transforms the phone. Personally I don't much care if I ever get ICS or JB on it. Once de-crapified the version it has is fine in my book. Then again my needs are probably less demanding than others. For me my phone is just a glorified PDA for getting my email, providing appointment notifications and storing my contacts. I use Touchdown for those things and that is going to be pretty much the same no matter what phone I use it on.

The speakerphone is the best I've had so far, very clear sound. The camera is above par as well, crisp and little grain, certainly better than my Atrix.
