[Q] Master Clear on Gingerbread - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I was using Foyo I always did a Master clear after returning to stock. I used Odin one click. I am now using Gingerbread. I want to know if I can do master clear with odin one click without going back to stock. Will this mess up the Gingerbread bootloaders?

I would like to know this also. If I flash from one GB rom to another and do not restore my TB I have a lot of "extra" stuff on my internal sd. I could delete this "extra" but i'm not sure what needs to be there.

Anything that needs to be there will be remade, you can delete every single folder on /sdcard and not **** anything up.
Also With xcal's new kernel in cwm, the wipe data/factory reset will wipe everything, just like a master clear.

Master clear wont delete anything but your apps and such, bootloaders are part of your root.

OK cool. Thanks for the info!

Thanks
Thanks for all the info.

I, personally, don't use Master Clear. I simply reformat the internal sd card. Same results, no computer or Odin needed(and it may be a little quicker than using Master Clear).

Do you reformat the SD card in CWM? I am using the latest Corn Kernal in Fusion XI.

Cant wipe all data with factory reset or Odin 1 click!!! HELP

Hi, Im trying to exchange my phone and Im having issues with getting the phone bone stock. I used odin 1 click, did a factory data reset, and all my pictures, app folders and various other things are still on the internal SD card. I was using titanium backup, I think thats the cause (not sure though)
I also just flashed JH3, super rooter, and the OC kernel. But as far as I can tell, those are back to factory. I just cant wipe all my data and I dont know if doing it manually will clear up everything.
Suggestions/questions? Thanks!
I even tried the master clear. I can still see files for shootme, sl4a, clockworkmod, update.zip's, and tons of other folders including busybox
Did you try connecting your phone to your computer, mounting the sd card, then open the driver than your sd card is on and manually delete the files that way? You can move the titanium back up to an external sd card and see if that helps.
Go to Titanium Backup support and shoot them a pm, they got back to me within a day when I had questions if you think it's related to that.

I can do that, But what Im worried about is all the application data (including data for apps that require root) wont be deleted. Im not sure exactly what I would have to do to remove that as well. I wanted to leave it there, so that if I did manage to wipe it, Id know for sure everything was gone.
Ill also try sending them a message. Is it on that forum site they link to? Its not very clear as to how to contact them

I pm'd Shazd, I have the pro donated version so I had everything backed up, moved the folder for Titanium Backup and the folder for Titanium license to my exteral card. Then I flashed with Odin to stock and swapped my phone for a new one. Then I put the sd card in the new phone, connected to my computer and moved the files to the internal sd, installed Titanium from the market and when it installed my entire backup was there, settings, apps, and data were all there. I did a restore and everything was just as my old phone. Then I installed Unleash The Beast, the cool battery indicator, thanks to Designgears and the rest is history. When I flashed with Odin, all evidence of root were gone. AT&T didn't even check the phone, all I said was random shutdowns and a crack in the screen and they swapped it.
I have the paid donate version as well. I mean, I have the backup saved to my microsd and on my computer, Its just weird, I mean for some reason its not wiping. Im literally trying everything. I had a backup with clockwork mod and I re-rooted with 1 click root so that I could run that... It may be super rooter, Im starting to think thats more the case. But I really am just stumped
I flashed with Odin3 one click, maybe that's the difference. What did you use exactly?

Both versions lol. 1-click and version 1.0 or whatever by flashing the stock firmware Jh6 from samsung-firmwares.com. I even tried a factory data reset
It may just be files in my internal SD card themselves that arent being deleted... but Im not really sure
It didn't wipe all of my info when I did master clear and then doing the one click wipe. I'm bit sure why it wouldn't either but it did remove most of what I wanted gone.
Sweet life
Huh... Well I did a bunch of clear cache things, wiped my internal sd, and went throught my phone with root explorer and deleted whatever else I found. Wow that was a huge hassle
I think the best thing to do in the future is clear all user data through clockwork, then use odin for master clear then odin start to do it all. It is a hassle that's for sure.
The SD cards (internal and external) are not cleared with a full system wipe. When you delete all data through a system clear, it deletes everything stored internally to apps - in the phone memory where apps are installed.
Although the internal SD card is not really an SD card, the system treats it as an SD card. You can unmount both internal and external SD cards and then format them - that will wipe all data. Follow that with a system reset or Odin 1 click recovery and everything on your phone is factory new.
The phone is behaving as designed.

[Q] Odin non-one click Master Clear

I have a build 10.10 From Rogers and updated with official Froyo via Kies, on some roms it told me to do a master clear from odin.
Because I have a 10.10 build, I read that its recommended that i Use the non-one click odin3 v1.7. But there's no such option for master clear.
How do I master clear from a non-one click odin?
Master clear is basically formatting your internal sd card. To be honest, there is really no point. I have never master cleared since it did not make sense to me that I have to format my internal sd card before flashing a rom. I have never run into any issues either
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
Yea I agree with above.most devs put it in the instructions to eliminate some random problems that can happen rarely. I have never done it and go out of my way to avoid master clears

you can still use odin one-click to do the master clear. I tested on my own phone, but not for reflashing to stock rom since you are on build 1010.
Instead of using ODIN do to do master clear, can't you use the format command in the phone settings?
Settings > SD card and phone storeage > Format SD card

[Q] Odin Master Clear not clearing masterfully?

I've ran an Odin Master clear, and then flashed back to stock... But all of my files are still on the phone after flashing back to stock, just on the stock 2.1 rom? Is this supposed to happen?
When you master cleared, list steps you did.

USB Debugging mode -> Launched Odin 1-click on PC -> Plugged in phone via USB -> Master Clear
Maybe they're files on your external SD card if you have one? It only deletes files off of the internal SD card.

Nope; was doing this from internal only (removed the external completely when reflashing, master clearing, etc). I did a phone format of the internal SD and flashed over that, and nothing seems to have broken yet... Is that safe?

maybe try performing factory reset with your stock 2.1 rom and see if it helps.
Do master clear after flashing to stock and just make it says in he Odin that master clear is done successfully...

Delete everything off internal SD?

I did a fresh install to FF 2.8 from another ROM.
I want to have the internal SD exactly like how I had it when I flashed for the first time. I think there was like 3 or 4 main core folders and that was it.
I tried doing a master reset to clear the SD by putting "*2767*3855#" but for some reason it's not working...
Any ideas?

Odin master clear.
Sent from my CM7 powered captivate
Wouldn't that bring me back to stock? Sorry, not to familiar with it. Only used it a few times when I first flashed.
I want to keep my custom ROM but just reset my internal SD.
I understand what I'm trying to do is just a "GSM reset" but would they bring me back to stock and take off my ROM? Even then, why isn't it working?
master clear does the same thing as formatting the internal sd card....odin is NOT required for that
Can't I just go into menu --> settings --> sd card and phone storage --> unmount internal storage card --> format internal storage card.
Would that safely remove all of my crap on my internal and still leave me safe with root access on my rom?
I don't think a master clear will take you back to stock... though I have never tried it I assume (haha) it will just delete everything and not also take you back to stock It couldn't be to hard to reflash it? Though I've never tried FF
right all format sd card

Well, it worked.
Have only the 3 main things on my SD and that's it. Feels great to start fresh and have nothing else on there.
Appreciate the fast replies guys.

No, it will not. I actually tried this while using cognition and ended up with a soft brick. If you want to clear your internal sd, what is wrong with flashing to stock, doing a master clear, and loading your rom again? Just backup your stuff. This is a typically failproof method and will get you to the place you want to be.

[Q] Odin3 from Serendipity

I couldn't find a clear answer very quickly... so I'm going out on a limb and just need to throw a quick question out there which should be a an easy one for experienced flashers.
I've been out of the flashing game for awhile now... been running Serendipity for some time. I'm wanting to give something else a try and want to do it the safest way possible, so I plan to master clear first. I have ran a Titanium Backup batch of everything I need (I believe) and am close to going ahead with the master clear.
I guess what this boils down to for me is a concern with the filesystem. I'm not clear on whether or not something has to be done with that before flashing or if the master clear process is going to safely just convert back to the original file system.
Hoping someone can shed a quick light for me and I'll move forward...
a master clear doesnt do **** for the filesystem. it is just formatting your internal sdcard....aka, you dont need to do it
ODIN flash back to stock will actually repartition, reformat, and flash the stock rom back on.
dont confuse the 2.....master clear is the same as going into your storage options in settings and formatting the internal sd card and going to the privacy section and deleting everything
Master clear doesn't touch the file system. It just wipes the internal memory. flashing to stock will resets the file system.
Perfect, that is exactly what I needed to know. I copied all the crap off of my sdcard and plan to masterclear anyway just to get an idea of how much I don't need anymore.
This does clear it all up, thanks guys.
