[Q] Wiping the nexus ready for the misses - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I wanna wipe my nexus one and flash a stock gingerbread rom because im giving the phone to my girlfriend.
Question!: Can i delete absolutely everything off the SD card before going into recovery and flashing the new rom? Or are there certain system files i need to leave on there?
I want to start completely fresh.
Cheers!

Everything that the new ROM needs, it'll create.
You can wipe it clean.

Yes, you can format the SD card and wipe everything from phone memory.

Except for the ROM you want to flash, of course... xD

you should be able to just flash the theme, but if it acts weird or doesn't look like the theme is supposed to or boot loops, then reflash your rom, then flash the theme. you shouldn't have to wipe, but if all else fails then you will.
You shouldn't have to... I switched between a few trying to settle on one a while ago (3.5 era cyanogen) and never had to wipe.
another question. if i wanna switch the rom from one to another. what should i do? wipe and flash it? i got partition SD ext and linux swap.
it depends on what rom you are wanting to flash. if it is a hero then you will have to flash and most likely wipe your ext2/3/4 partition. if it is another ADP based rom then you might not have to to wipe, but if it doesn't work properly then you will have to wipe.
Hey... just make a backup and try it.
If you go from a non-Hero to a Hero or vice-versa then you may as well wipe just to make sure. Clean out your ext partition as well. (Make a backup of course.)
Then go ahead and try a upgrade install. If it begins to act strange (such as compass, or touchscreen, etc) then go ahead and wipe and try again. You may also want to try to fastboot flash your data.img file from your nandroid backup. That sometimes works.
In the event that you wipe, install and can't get it to boot and want to go back to your old rom, just fastboot flash your .img files. Then just restore your backups to your ext partition (if you had to delete everything) and voila! Just like it never happened (after you restore your ext backup if you had to delete everything).

[Q] wiping data and cache

I am currently running eclair 2.1 with the jh7 update rooted with OCLF and I need to know when to wipe data and cache with CWrecovery and also when to factory reset. My goal is to have a clean switch to Cog 2.2.5 without having to use Odin back to stock. So please tell me when to do these things to have a clean install. Like before or after i install the new rom??
You have to use Odin to flash to stock first or something may end up corrupted during the Cog flash. I would back up all files from your internal SD to your PC first and remove your SIM and external SD card . I believe that a Master Clear wipes everything but a factory reset leaves everything on your internal intact. Things have less chance of corruption and run smoother when done this way.

Can't Upgrade cyanogenmod, stuck at HTC screen

Hi,
I've been trying to upgrade my Hero from cyanogenmod 6.1 RC1 for a while now. Every new rom I try to install just hangs the phone at the initial HTC screen. I've tried wiping every partition I can possibly wipe before I install the new ROM's but no go. The only way to get my phone back is to install 6.1 RC1 again.
Not sure what to do. I've tried different memory cards too.
Any suggestions? Maybe my phone just doesn't like the new 7.X roms?
Try reflashing your recovery. You might want to check out Ra1.7. Or you could try this after you reflash your recovery
Backup all of your data to your pc. Then format your sd threw your pc and restore factory defaults. Then format it again threw your recovery with no partitions no swap just all fat/system. Then redownload the rom of your choice+gapps. Then perform a fully wipe as in data, cache davilk-cache. Then flash the rom then the gspps and see if the rom will reboot.
Locked & Loaded
yeah you should definitely use the wipe function in the recovery menu before you flash the new rom,
if that doesn't help, restore to the original and start over, maybe use different recovery, i use the the amonra, it's been working well
Thanks, I will give it another go in a day or two and let you know how it goes.

[Q] About moving from one rom to another and fresh start

Whenever I flash to another rom and wipe everything, do all the files from the previous rom get completely removed? I mean, if I move to a new rom, is it like formatting my computer and installing Windows (or whatever OS) again?
I'm not talking about my files in the SD card, I want to know if flashing a new rom and wiping means a clean, fresh start
AFAIK, it will not get you a fresh OS like you format your PC before installing new OS. I recommend you to full wipe your phone, make a back up before ! your sd card's data will not be deleted, but your apps, contacs, settings, messages, etc will be removed.
I usually do a full wipe, install the rom and then full wipe again
Just backup with xrecovery before installing new rom, then install rom and wipe bat, cache and dalvik, you should retain your data but if not you can full wipe then or restore.
From Froyobread to GingerDX kept my data, Same Dev.
But, guys, I don't want to retain my data. I want to know if flashing a new rom means a fresh start.

Full wipe and fresh start.
Yes it formats everything such as files from the os and your data! Before you move to any rom always make a backup, just incase something goes bad, such as it not booting for some reason or other bugs.

Odin doesn't do either of those things unless you tell it to. But you need to use odin one click and master clear for a wiped phone. This will delete everything so back up your stuff or run the master clear without your sim/external sd in the phone.
If you used a .pit with it then you're file system has been repartitioned, it doesn't wipe the sdcard as that has nothing to do with the system, it where you keep your stuff.
That would like swapping an engine in a car and also taking everything out of the trunk.
