The difference is that the Verizon A855 is also called The Droid 1. It has an unlocked bootloader, allowing users to flash custom kernels onto it.
Whereas, the Milestone is almost identical to the Droid, it does not have an unlocked bootloader. We can still flash custom ROMs, but not true ROMs, because we don't have access to the kernel.

Another important note is that the A855 "Droid" is not compatible with any GSM networks but the A853 Milestone is.
There are also two types of Milestone's. Standard EU and Telus.

[Q] Milestone vs Droid?

What is the difference or is it the same phone? I've been pondering this for a while now, but never ask the question.
if i had both i would tell you
ha ha... two different phones... got it

The difference between the Droid and the Milestone is that the Droid has a slightly higher clock speed (600MHz compared to 550), but the biggest thing is that it has an unlocked bootloader. That enables the use of full custom ROMs, whereas the Milestone is quite limited due to its locked bootloader.
actually the main difference is that droid is CDMA (no sim card) as compared to european milestone (sim rad). so the difference is the radio used. AFAIK other hardware used is the same on both.
also the droid has unlocked bootloader as compared to locked milestone.
edit> and there was some type of qwerty keyboard on droid that wasn't on milestone I think - the flat keys version.
Offcourse milestone is worst as the Droid is already unlocked and 600Mhz instead of 550 in mIlestone
as said above. droid has other radio and unlocked bootloader.
Each device requires a different kernel, and each has different options / modules. For "identical" phones, it is surprising how much has to be changed in a rom to port from one to the other.
Multi touch support
Also i do believe the Droid (stock at least) did not come with multitouch suport, whereas the Milestone does come with it. Apart from that, all as been said.

[Q] Simple n00b Question About ROMs

I'm definitely a noob here, but I've been lurking for over a year, researching, and finally made an account.
I'm stuck with AT&T for awhile. Like most other sensible people on the planet, I want a Droid 3. I thought all hope was lost until I just recently heard that someone finally cracked (rooted) the thing and there are already several custom ROMs out, to my understanding..? Like the Steel Droid ROM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1278056
Does the Steel ROM allow a Droid 3 to work on AT&T networks?
I also read that Negri Electronics is selling custom Droid 3's that work on AT&T's 3G networks, but it's $600.
Is there any hope of getting a D3 with AT&T, or do I have to stick with my beat-up (but still functional) old Tilt 2?
And Yes I searched, but the Droid 3 Root thing is so new there's not much info on it yet.
I have heard of people successfully using a D3 on AT&T, I think you need to unlock the SIM for US networks somehow. Loading a rom like Steel Droid won't make any changes that will allow you to use it on AT&T though.

Hrm... Crap. So currently the only way to get one for AT&T is via Negri Electronics? No one has heard of any other way? 0.o
I don't suppose there's any other phone that can compete with the D3 as far as specs and a full QWERTY keyboard, huh? Bummer, big time
I'm coming from a VZW TP2 and i know people used it on Tmobile and other GSM networks by unlocking the SIM. The way I did it was by calling Verizon and telling them I was going out of the country and they did it for free on the phone, I'm not sure how to do it if you're already on another network or don't activate it with Verizon first (For free). But that's definitely what you should look for, once the SIM is unlocked it should work anywhere as long as you enable roaming.

Simlock or not you can use the droid 3 anywhere in the world but not in the us.
No matter if you use the verizon sim or any other sim.
To do it you need the so called band unlocking which is currently unavailable for the droid 3 and when and if will be, will require a good amount of money.
In short if you need the phone buy a milestone 3/Xt860
...but keep in mind, that while root and recovery are a go for the XT860, there's no custom ROMs working as of yet.
It'll come though.

Did a little research, but just to be clear, the Milestone 3 (aka the XT860) is the Canadian version of the D3, released by Bell, correct?
And since it already works in North America, could I simply buy one and use it on AT&T as-is? Or would it also need some sort of unlocking?
Correct
Given the price should be an unlocked phone, ready to be used anywhere in the world US included.
Thanks, I almost bought an XT883 a few days ago, that would have been terrible. Stupid Verizon and their locked-down phones.
[UPDATE]
Alright. Thanks to you guys' help and support, I averted a financial disaster and a raft of headaches/psychological meltdowns. I just ordered:

Can't wait to get my hands on a D3! My first truly new phone since I bought my Motorola SLVR 5 years ago, with its amazing, first-of-its-kind ability to play up to a whopping 100 iTunes songs on its giant 512mb MicroSD card.
I'm in Hawaii, waiting on a phone being shipped from Canada though, so it'll be a couple days
Thanks again for your patience guys, especially Solutor, your advice really made a difference. I clicked the Thanks button for you.

You are welcome.

[Q] Lots of questions

So I picked up a droid 3 from verizon. XT862
I bought an unlock code, and am waiting for it to come in. I want to use it with t-mobile, people were saying to flash the Chinese radio. How do I go about doing this.
Also, if the XT860 works, why can't I flash that firmware?
Secondly, is there a "root" for the droid 3 yet?
And Lastly, is the droid 3 Chinese rom going to be the only rom i can run if I am on t-mobile?
Thanks in advance.

You probably should have researched this before you bought it. Yes we have root... a quick look at the forums shows several roms and recoveries. As for your other questions, no idea.
You do understand that you're only going to be getting edge on T-Mobile, yeah?
And, because the droid3 has CDMA hardware, its possible that the XT860 firmware may do strange things with your device.
Nexus S, running CM9a11

Ah I see, no problem on edge with t-mobile, I don't have a data plan.

[Q] droid 4, GSM?

I was just wondering if theyre putting me on or if theres another way around it. any info would be greatly appreciated. ive heard of flashing bionic and it might work. thanks ereone.

GSM works, just not for american providers due to radio blacklisting by verizon. You can use GSM elsewhere in the world on a Droid 4, I don't think anybody has ever gotten one working outside of Verizon in the US.
Only way of getting a truly unlocked decent QWERTY phone in US is getting a Moto Photon Q and having it sim modded.

[Q] Moto Maxx stock rom on Droid Turbo...Is it possible?

Hi,
I live in Israel and about 3 weeks ago got a Droid Turbo from the US (its the 64GB Ballistic Nylon version).
Overall the phone works fine here, I think the reception is not the best comparing to my good old HTC One X but I will have to do more tests in that area.
Anyway, because the Moto Maxx is an international version of the Turbo I was wondering if it is possible to use the Moto Maxx stock rom on my Turbo?
The reasons I thought about it is because I really don't like the Verizon's softwares, partially because I have no use in them here and I don't like being forced to have softwares I didn't install myself
The second and main reason is because the Moto Maxx is an international version so I think it will be more compatible with my country's network requirements.
Do you guys think it can be done? I think both versions are identical so I can't think of any reason why it won't work.
According to GSMArena.com the only differences are:
One of the LTE bands (13 vs 17):
Droid Turbo: LTE 700 / 1700 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 (Bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 13).
Moto Maxx: LTE 700 / 1700 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 (Bands 2, 3, 4, 7, 17).
And the screen types (though I think Super AMOLED and OLED screens are exactly the same):
Droid Turbo: Super AMOLED screen.
Moto Maxx: OLED screen.
So to sum it up, did I get it right or have I just waisted 3 minutes of your life...?
Thanks guys !
no, it cannot be done

Thanks !
No, it's not feasibly possible to install Moto Maxx software on a Turbo, especially without a bootloader unlock. With a bootloader unlock, it may be possible, but the Turbo doesn't even have root yet. As for your dislike of the Verizon apps, it's possible to "disable" (disabling them hides them as well) them. I can send you a guide link if you want.
i would also like to point out that the two devices don't even share the same Cell Radios sou you could end up bricking your phone even with an unlocked bootloader

I meant after the Turbo will get root or bootloader unlocked of course, I guess I should have mentioned it before
About disabling the softwares, thanks for that but I have already done that

What do you mean by different Cell Radios ? The only difference I saw was the LTE band (13 vs 17). I'm not even sure what that means but I can get LTE right now.
Thanks guys !

Ahh, yeah I can see that!
Well, hopefully before long we'll have root and then you can get rid of all the stuff you don't want!
