I have a Samsung Galaxy I900 which is still on
Firmware 2.1-update 1
Kernel 2.6.29
Build Eclair
I rooted with "Z4Root". I have "ROM Manager" installed.
How do I upgrade to a more recent build (Froyo, Gingerbread)? How does that relate to ROMS such as Fresh and CyanogenMod?
just do some reading, all of this has been answered.... it is to complicated to give you the answers you are looking for without writing a short novel.
Do some research as this is the most basic stuff your asking.

Hi guys,
I have the Galaxy S on T-Mobile and have come to the conclusion T-Mobile will never release the 2.2 Froyo update - I'm looking to root it instead and put on one of the lag-fix's.
Can you guys recommend me the best guides for the following :-
Rooting the Galaxy S
Updating firmware to 2.2
Lag-Fix
Thanks in advance,
Gav

If you really want 2.2, best options are:
Firmware JP6
Voodoo lagfix pre-3
CF Root
In my opinion anyway!
If you can live with 2.1, then JM9 or even JM8 with voodoo lagfix beta 5 is your best bet.
With both, I like Tatuyama's ROM, I find it the most stable. The only competition really is DocRambone.
and this has what todo with DEV?
Firmware JPA
CF Root
Voodoo lagfix pre-3
here is what i am using now
Just purchased a captivate with custom rom
Firmware version: 2.2
Baseband version: I897UCJI6
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 jetaek.lee sep-11 #1
Build number: FROYO.UCJI6
Is this version solid? Seller say's he has had no problems with current set up.
he can load cognition 3.04, however I will have to wait several days.
This is my first venture with this type of phone that will be used for work continuously, i just need it to work smoothly, if current rom is sufficient no worries then.
Thanks for input.
That is the original Froyo leak and buggy as hell. You are better to get one of the more recent custom roms. Cognition is the closest Froyo for our Captivates as it's based on the Rogers release. Just flashed this, Cognition 3.04, today and I'm loving it!
Use it and see if your like it.

Thank you, that was the kind of response I was looking for. Have a great one.
what would be the best kernal and modem combo for this rom i really want good battery life I just got my captivate 6 days ago and out of 3 roms i like this one just want to know the best choices.
Speedmod k12t kernel and KP1 modem.
Take a look at my signature, results speak!!
Nothing against what any particular person will state or tell you to use, not all combination's will necessarily have the same effect from phone to phone. This is really the same as which ROM is the best because what works well on phone "A" might not work the same as phone "B". Just try different combos to find what your phone likes because these phones are very finicky.
i've been reading and this is what i come up with looking at the rom i flashed this is what is says.
model #sgh-i897
firmware 2.2
baseband i9000ugjk3
kernal version 2.6.32.9
build # gingerr5
off this info which kernal would i flash the one for captvate or the one for galaxy s i9000.i just dont want to do something stupid sorry for the questions.
You would flash an sgh-i897 kernel.
Here's a link to hardcore's kernel, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880.
you can use sgs kernel flasher to install it.
The link is at the bottom of the original post in the attached files box
not to ask more ? but is that because my phone is still based on captivate but with just a base rom.and what is really a base rom 2.2 mod to work on captivate?
Yes, the captivate sgh-i897 doesn't have 2.2 froyo yet, because it hasn't been released yet, but developers used the leaked version of froyo to base their roms off of. An i9000 rom is actually a rom from an i9000 galaxy s phone that was adapted for the captivate. But basically, all you have to worry about is whether or not the numbers match up.
Simple questions:
If I have installed a cooked Gingerbread ROM (2.3.2 JV1 or 2.3.3 JVK evolution), can I replace the kernel with a Froyo version kernel (2.2.1 as JS8 or others)? What happens?
Doesn't work or doesn't boot? Will I have stability problems?
Does it downgrade version of Android on my device? So I will have a Froyo device?
This question come to me cause on other Devices (HTC Desire, Hero, Magic) I had before Galaxy haven't distinct versions: Froyo o Gingerbread ROMs are one package. In Galaxy, instead, I can change Kernels with ODIN, replacing the one that comes with Cooked ROM package... And I read sometimes Ginger Kernel based on 2.2.1... ??? what the hell?
Ciao
You will get bootloops
Btw, this is in no way development related and should be posted in general. Just for your next question...
Should be on Q&A
Hey everyone, i recently purchased a sgs i9000 and i really want to root it, i have read a lot about rooting (including reading threads on this site) and i am still a bit unsure. Here are some details about my phone:
Model number: GT-I9000
Firmware version: 2.2.1
Baseband version: I9000BVJP4
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: FROYO.BVJS4
It is branded to Orange (so it has the Orange bootup as well as the Galaxy bootup)
All i am insterested in is rooting my phone to have superuser access. At the moment i am not bothered about flashing a rom during the root process.
Thanks in advance
If you'll be staying at 2.2.1 you can flash a kernel with odin. For instance, speedmod k13e or sth. else. It will make your phone faster and will add superuser and busybox and it takes less than a minute to do that.
hi
you can root it using different ways
1-try z4root from the market
2-using odin flash any voodoo kernel or speedmod kernel
3-i think also super one click will be usefull
regards
So speedmod k13e works with my build number etc? or does it not matter? Thanks
Yeah, 2.2.1 kernels work on all 2.2.1 ROMs.
