Hey Folks,
Purchased one of the Refurb Galaxy Tabs through ATT's blitz $200 sale today.
As an Android user of 3 years, the first step I'll take is rooting/romming. I see that Overcome seems to be the most popular ROM set for the GSM models.
On my Galaxy S (Vibrant), I typically prefer Froyo roms as they have generally better stability. The GB roms I've tried do excel past Froyo with some actions, but overall I prefer the consistent experience with the Froyo roms.
I bet many of you started on Overcome Froyo and then have moved to GB, which one would you recommend as a first time GalaxyTab owner, and with what I've stated above?
Thanks!
edit: sorry for missing [Q] in the title.
Stay on froyo with overcome oc/uv until gingerdread is more stable

gingerbread, its newer and will only get better.
froyo, has almost a year of tweaks and other stuff put into it.
Personally, just use froyo until a cm7 comes out for the tab

So after 2 awful years with a first gen Blackberry storm I decided to make the jump to android with the captivate. Originally I was holding out for the Nexus S as I really wanted a vanilla Android experience (I have a deep hatred for bloatware) but unfortunately around where I live it appears Verizon and AT&T are the only ways to go if you want any sort of decent coverage.
Anyways, I've been doing a bunch of research and watching videos the past week I've decided to flash either Perception (build 8) or Cognition (probably 2.3b6) and am leaning towards P8 as of now. I am wondering how much of these ROMs is vanilla android.
I realize from what I've read/watch that the touchwiz launcher is removed in both of these roms as well as the AT&T bloatware, but is much of the other base applications such as mail, media player, etc is still the samsung apps?
Basically, I'm wondering how close to vanilla android will the launcher/interface be with one of these Roms (obviously the roms include some additional apps, I guess I mean just the basic functionality/interface).
Also, is there a major difference between running a rom such as Perception or Cog opposed to simply unlocking/lag fixing and removing bloatware as far as general speed and lag. I know these roms are using leaked Froyo firmware opposed to the stock eclair I would have if I did not flash, but I'm curious how big of a leap in performance it is.
Thanks for the responses, hopefully my questions make sense, my captivates not coming till Monday (bought it through Amazon wireless) and I've been reading random android forums seemingly nonstop.

I always click thanks button before quote button now! Oh well.
I know cognition has twlauncher, not sure about perception (I don't remember..)
All custom ROMs have bloatware removed at your convenience. I'd say froyo is definitely faster. Either voodoo lagfix from xcal's kernel or lagfix from SetiroN's kernel gives a big performance increase. Cognition is based on a captivate rom whereas perception is based on an i9000 ROM.
No ROMs right now provide complete vanilla experience. I believe I read it somewhere that the Galaxy S line devices use rfs loops whereas usual android uses ext and this causes a problem for devs to port over vanilla android or other skins like HTC Sense. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong?) As of currently all the stable ROMs are based on froyo leaks with captivate, vibrant, or i9000.
I've tried many variations with stock roms, rooted, lag fixed etc. I currently use the cognition rom, latest one. It is much faster and better than the stock. It has voodoo lagfix built in. I haven't tried p8, because I like the cognition so well. I definately recommend giving cognition a try. I was also going to try Axura, but haven't for the same reason.

Try Assonance or Axura. IMO they're more vanilla than Cognition or Perception.
Thanks for all the info all.
Honestly I haven't even looked into assonance or axura, are they as stable as Cog/Perception?
quarlow, when you say you use the latest version of Cog do you mean b6 or b7? I know b7 just came out a day or two ago. I'd stick with the non-oc versions, seems like they tend to have alot less issues from what I've read.
My bad, I'm using b6, I didn't know there was already another version. Yeah ... I don't do the oc thing. I have a hard enough time between charges without adding oc. It really is screaming fast already.

I haven't really tried Cognition or Perception, but I've tried both Axura and Assonance and both ROMs seemed really stable.
ah jeez, now that I've been looking into it, I think I'm gonna go with assonance. Seems like its alot more stable than either Cog/Perception from what people are saying.
Just curious though, how fast/smooth does it run? Compared to stock and/or Cog/Perception?
Axura gets my vote
Stable and fast without needing to overclock
Need to use google voice for vm notifications though

All 2.2 Roms are smooth and fast compared to stock. Assonance will be your most vanilla (least amount of Samsung apps). Auxura is heavily themed and no where near vanilla. Plus it's based off of leaked Vibrant and I'm not a big fan (though I'm definitely in the minority here). Personal favorite is di11igaf's Rom. It is also heavily themed, but all themes can be changed and it works the best as far as functionality (my opinion, of course).

I'll second this. di11igaf's ROM is the most stable and fastest I've used. It might not be "vanilla" since it is themed, but the dark theme on it is so nice. You'll like it. I've flashed this for friends at work and they all love it and they have no more forced close issues, whereas they complained frequently about FCs with Cognition.
If you don't mind beta software, CyanogenMod is the best. It's actually built from AOSP code, with only Samsung drivers. All the other custom roms are just modified versions of the stock rom/leaked rom.
I run perception 8 with gingerbread theme and vanilla apps injected in place of sammy ones... so I kinda feel like im running gingerbread

At one point wasnt there an internal build Gingerbread rom "leaked" from Samsung for the Galaxy S? I thought at one point I remember reading that there was. If there was, is anybody doctoring it up for the Captivate?
I'd like to go for Gingerbread on my Captivate but kind of dont want CM7, since it's stock based its too "green". I actually kind of like the samsung touchwiz based roms since they have the blue highlighting and the TW launcher isnt too bad, it looks sooooo much better than that puke green color of stock gingerbread.

There was a leak for the I9000 but since they did not release the source code it can not be ported over to the Captivate.
so far there is CM7 and Miui built off 2.3.3.. your only 2 choices so far. Neither are out of beta yet.
i believe samsung has said they will be releasing gingerbread for the galaxy s phones starting as early as next month... not that I think they can keep a date to save their lives, but they do generally follow through... eventually
just wait for a while, since others (htc, sony) will release 2.3 update pretty soon, samsung will do the same thing ...

once again, like last time. samsung released on time, but to the carriers not us. the carriers then got do decide if/and what to do with it. ATT dropped the date. not samsung.
there are already theads for the gingerbread rumor.

Any one with miui(GSM) experience?
Ok so check this out last night i went thru flashing 3 roms on my Tab, i flashed both of the MIUIs and the Boca Rom.
I must admit that within the next hours or so I was so determined to flash the kratos back.
So In my opinion the most practical and stable Rom is Kratos, MIUIS are not stable and not for tablets. Where as the Boca was by far the worst ROM ive ever seen or used. Its just so horrible, my tab felt and looked so cheap with Boca running on it.
So Imm stick to Kratos for now, its the best on the block so far.
P.S: I have nothing personal against BOCA's dev as I know its a work of alot of dedication and time but I also have to criticise on the build because it was just horrible and the look of it was really cheap. So no offense to the dev, I hope the dev takes it as a constructive criticism. Thanks.
I'll add in a voice for Overcome (running Kratos here). I started by trying to use the stock 2.3.3 ROM, and after having a number of problems with it took a chance on Overcome, and to my surprise it was actually substantially more stable and bug-free, though the startup splash screen is a tad overdone.
I'm afraid I just put an end to that bugless streak, though. I just posted a bug report to the Kratos thread about a problem with the VPN icon (namely, it doesn't change if the VPN gets disconnected).
I tried Overcome for a few weeks, tonight i installed MIUI, so we'll se...
I always used to have the overcome rom on the tab(great Roms), but I've had mssmison's miui rom installed the last few week, and its the smoothest its ever been, and quite stable.but then I always restock before I install an update/different rom.
There are some quirks, but nothing that hinders my use of the tab as a tablet.

it depends on which ROM you prefer.
every ROM is different, they need perfection. And custom ROMs are far from it. Anyway i prefer the official 2.3 Firmware

i tried MIUI, and...
Battery usage is wrongly displayed, camera app has a mind of it's own (blocks when i try to switch to front camera), no auto rotation (except browser), battery consuption is not better then overcome...
Back to overcome for me
(i have GT-P1000, GSM version, T-Mobile)
task650 rom all the way
Another vote for Overcome Kratos for me. Runs awesome!
I know random shutdowns is an issue with Captivate. For the first year was maybe only 2 or 3 times total, but now, as it's past the warranty (naturally), becoming more frequent, which we know is always disconcerting to pick up the phone to find it's powered off
For those who are familiar with it, is it more likely hardware, a rogue app or the rom? I've been running a Froyo rom (Continuum 4.0) for a very long time, was thinking maybe if I flash a new rom (have been considering a GB rom for i897 like Illuminance) if it might solve it?
Any ideas would be appreciated
Froyo does have issues I would fnd a stable 2.3 gingerbread rom I have one on my old captivate and its amazing

Thanks.
I have seen some (only a couple) people post they're disappointed with the stability of GB roms, and prefer 2.2 roms. I did change the launcher a couple of months ago from LP to Go launcher (as to whether that could be a culprit) -but have been thinking of going to a GB rom anyway.
Try one...or a few, hell all of them.
It's Not like you can't go back to froyo if you don't like any...

True. Thanks, I think I'll make the jump to Illuminance very soon.
I'm in a very similar position and have several other issues, so I am also hoping that GB will be my salvation. Can I ask what factors made you decide on Illuminance? Thanks.

Haven't installed it yet, but leaning toward that rom as comments by users posting in the thread for it seem to feel it's stable, smooth, good battery, quick, using leaks specifically for Captivate, and I like that it's not heavily themed, close to stock, though there is now an ICS theme that looks nice, and the dev team seems to be diligent and responsive
I bet ICS would be good I never have seen any of its features but from what I've heard its awesome

ikr?! the ports cant come fast enough!!!
I recently purchased this 8.9 tablet and extremely surprised how lacking the developer community is, i come from the desire hd and im updating my phone weekly sometimes even faster, but i came here and aokp/cm are apparently buggy and the threads are outdated with some even months old!
Im used to seeing pages go into 1000 pages, but here theres not even 6!
Anyway.... its a surprising change and im skeptical if its worth even rooting at all! Any recommendations?
All the ICS Roms pretty much have the same bugs and will, until the Official Update. I've tried all of them and they're definitely faster and more customizable than stock obviously but if you're looking for a 'fully functional' Rom, either try Overcome (which is a really good HC Rom) or stick with stock for another month or two. I went back to stock, rooted, removed the bloatware and apps that I wouldn't use and I'm pretty happy with that setup until something more stable comes along.

+1 instead of complaining be thankfull of what you have if you cant contribute to anything then just keep that to yourself because that wont help. .
Yes, definitely be thankful. Check out the gtab 7 plus community. Now that's lacking!
Anyhow I'll suggest kallt kaffe's cm9 june 8 build. The latest build I've read has some issues with the device powering itself off. All in all, I've been very impressed by kallt kaffe's cm9 build/ports!
Stock ROM is ok until ICS update. Just flash the motley's kernel, overclock it to 1.4-1.5 ghz and you will be very surprised by the speed of it. Also benchmark scores will increase significantly and touchwiz will be smooth.

Agreed. But instead of stock, I recommend Overcome 3.2.
Used HC stock rom for 2 days and it was very laggy. Went straight to the ICS ROMS which are much better. Didn't test Overcome 3.2 though. Performance between AOKP and CM9 are pretty much the same but CM9 has MUCH better batterylife. Would definitely go for CM9 which is official so you can flash nightlies all week long
