[Q] "Soft-bricked" Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I thought I totally bricked my Captivate, but it turns out it will enter download mode and after a couple of days I even got the AT&T screen to load up (though nothing happens after that). I thought I could use Odin3 to flash stock back onto it, but every time I connect it via USB Windows recognizes it as a malfunctioned device. None of the Odin programs I use will recognize it now. Is there any way I can get my phone back? Any help is appreciated.

I think you need to install a proper driver.

Delete it please.

The drivers were installed. The computer used to recognize the phone just fine before it bricked. I've been trying everything to get stock back on it...

Try a different computer
My laptop had this exact problem for all of its usb ports
I changed to my desktop and everything works fine now

[Q] Windows No Longer Recognizes Captivate

Hello all, I am turning to the Forums since I have spent 5 hours trying to resolve my problem.
Earlier today I installed Kies Mini on my computer in anticipation of the official AT&T Froyo. However, now my computer no longer recognizes my phone at all. It does not show up in the Device Manager, or anywhere.
I tried Uninstalling Kies Mini, Uninstalling the Drivers, Rebooting my phone. etc, etc. But Windows still will not recognize the phone as attached. It worked in the past and I would like for it to work again.
I am currently running Windows 7 64 bit. My Captivate is running Cog 3.4.
Try this:
Uninstall Kies Mini and all Drivers
Reinstall Kies Mini
Once installed turn on USB debugging on your phone and then plug it in, let it install all of the drivers.
Unplug your phone and shut it down
Once shut down activate download mode (hold up and down volume and plug in the USB) again it will install more drivers.
Once this is done unplug your phone, remove the battery and turn it back on, then restart your computer.
Uninstalled Kies Mini, and Samsung Drivers. Reboot
Installed Kies Mini.
Attached Phone to Computer. Nothing.
Also, Tried to Just boot my phone into Recovery Mode. But only boots into Clockwork Recovery. Can't Log into Stock Recovery
Update: Tried hooking up the phone to my XP machine. No Joy. XP did not recognize the device or try to install drivers.
Did you enable debugging?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes, I placed it in Debug mode. When I plug in my Phone my Title Bar Shows the USB Debugging Android indicating that USB Debugging connected, the USB icon that says Copy files to From Computer. If I click on USB, it gives me the Green Connect Android, then the Orange One. But none of my computers recognize a USB device as connected.
I have tried it with Three different cables. I'm thinking that somehow the phone is not sending some message to Windows saying "Hey, I'm connected"
Did you use the correct drivers for the phone? Can't recall of the top of my head if I can use the standard captivate drivers for windows if your on cognition..

Not in device manager
I have what appears to be a soft brick. I was running the i9000 drivers. I was trying to install the i897. At first Odin recognized my phone and I began to download. The Odin bootloader flash failed. No my computer (Win 7 64 bit) does not even see my phone. Nothing in device manager, not even an unrecognized device.
I can get my phone into download mode. Does anyone have an idea how I can get windows to see me again?
From my experience as long as you are in download mode and have odin opened up it when you connect it, odin should find the phone no problem for you to be able to flash something new to it.

Have you rebooted the PC? Try to reinstall the drivers again. I had to reinstall the nexus s drivers but I have read some need to reinstall kies to get the drivers to work. Just keep at it. Try other USB ports. My phone wouldn't be recognized for about two weeks with trying everything. I tried new USB cables, drivers and all. Then finally it kind of worked and I went from download mode with a jig to phone!PC and then it took another reboot of the laptop and phone was able to get flashed again via the phone!PC screen. Just keep trying is all I can say.

[Q] Wont mount to PC or Mac

Hi all, I have scoured the web for similar issues and can't find any answers
-Captivate I897 running 2.1 formerly mounted to my MAC just fine, rooted using Galaxy-S one click root. Root was successful, mostly just removed bloatware, etc.. but alas my phone is no longer recognized by the computer, although the phone recognizes that it is connected, when I click "mount" nothing happens on the computer's end.
-Appears to be a problem with the phone, I have tried Win7 w/ Kies mini and installed/reinstalled drivers, dev mode, etc...nada. And here's the kicker - these machines will recognize and mount my GF's unrooted Vibrant just fine.
-I have a separate micro SD card reader that can read the SD card out of the phone that way.
-So, I am hoping for some help to either
1 - fix the computer recognition issue, or
2- find steps to manually update to 2.2 or unroot, etc, any ideas that will get me running 2.2 and hopefully mount to Mac or PC, using files manually loaded to the SD and installed during recovery mode, this looks like flashing, would Andromeda or Cognition fix the connectivity issue?
Thanks in advance!!
If you're rooted and can get into download mode (power off+2 volume buttons+plug usb in) then you can use this link ----> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QL6NX702 to flash stock 2.2 firmware. Note: This WILL break your root. Here's the thread on Odin One Click as well---->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. You probably want to read the information there before flashing to 2.2.
Good Luck!
Thanks for the suggestion, I've tried multiple drivers, but since my PC doesnt recognize my phone, both Odin or Superoneclick dont recognize my phone also.
I was able to manually unroot by copying the One Click Root Update.zip to my phone via Wifi File-sharing app. Unroot was successful, but still no connection to PC or Mac.
I'm stuck for now, It appears that any type of flashing requires a PC connection, unless there is some way to flash completely with Wifi-copied files and using the 'reinstall packages' option?
Well, if you have a dropbox, you could drag and drop a rom (say cognition) onto your phone's dropbox. Then you'd need to find a CWM recovery (make sure it's not 3.0) update.zip and reinstall packages. This will give you CWM recovery, from which you could install Cognition from your dropbox. No guarantees it will work, but it's worth a shot.
Can't help on the Mac and I only have a dim memory of 2.1, but what are your setting under Settings/Applications for USB settings and Development? Do you have USB debugging checked (on)? Do you have the Development settings set to something weird like Kies update?
My recommendation is to put USB debugging on (checked). In that case I think the USB settings choice is disabled and therefore ignored. Then when you connect to the computer you will get a message in the notification bar on your phone saying something like "select to copy files to/from the computer". Click that, then click the mount button. You should then be able to see the extra drives on your computer by looking under My Computer or whatever (on a PC). On mine they are F and G, no special indications that they are drives on an attached phone. I also do get an automatic pop-up for the new drives, like when you insert a USB stick, but I imagine that setting could be disabled so look for the drives manually.
If you can get a com port try to do a master clear with the phone plugged in and on the entire time, then do various methods of getting into download mode if you got a com port when the phone booted up, future references I would use Odin to flash speedmod kernel to get cwm and then flash a rom or leave it as is, when I first started rooting I used the same software and got the same problem
Try installing all the drivers beforehand just to make sure

My wife's phone has the exact same issue as OP. Suggestions like above are useless unfortunately as the phone does not recognize that it is connected to a computer. Instead it acts as though it is connected to a charger. The oddest thing is that if I plug it in to a computer while the phone is turned off, the phone will turn on! However, still no recognition that it is connected to a PC.
Initially when I connected the phone the first time, Win7 said driver failed to install. Then my working cappy would not connect to Win7. I had to uninstall and reinstall the drivers and restart. My working cappy connected as it should, but my wife's phone from that point refused to recognize anything but charging.
Attempts to fix Via external SD: (1) I transferred Continuum 4.1 and reinstalled. Still not recognized. (2) Transferred my recovery images from January for stock, but just became stuck on boot screen for Continuum. I am uneasy about transferring the update-recovery.zip and download folder from original backup as I do not know whether it will screw up attempts to re-enter recovery if it does not work. (3) Attempted download mode, but only works via CWM 2 (not extended menu or three button or by inserting battery with odin up trick). Even when in DL mode odin does not recognize the COM port. (4) Attempted different orders for connecting to Odin in DL mode. By orders I mean rearranging the order I connect (i.e. open odin then connect cable then go to DL). (5) transferred andromeda3 and reinstalled, still same issue.
So, I am left thinking a hardware failure occurred at some point, so I will need to open it up and check connectors to solder it possibly.
Possible non-hardware solution is to restore to stock somehow WITHOUT Odin via CWM. Anyone know if this is possible or have a link to a flashable zip?
Thanks!
edit: I am on Win7 and always made sure USB debugging was checked. Also I tried to connect via One-Click Root for the heck of it and kies mini. No luck.
flashed without a cable
Thanks for the tip jomeister 15, I was able to flash new roms dropped over wifi with CWM recovery. This got me onto 2.2 which was the main purpose of this whole adventure. I just loaded Andromeda3 and it's pretty darn impressive.
My PC and Mac still do not recognise my phone, I troubleshot extensively like Snowake and nothing is recognized. I'm convinced its a hardware issue but who cares with wireless flashing and file transfer.

You could try to send a ROM, kernel, and update.zip(CWM flash) and attempt to get another ROM over it. Format the system, wipe dalvik, I don't think its a hardware issue, I had the same problem first time I tried using 1 click rooting, I just waited patiently and got a com port after about two days, so that just leads me to believe some configuration file was corrupted during flash to stock, possibly flashing a ROM or reflashing the ROM you're on with a complete wipe of the system and user data and whatnot, or possibly just doing a backup up from cwm and immediately restore it, if its charging I highly doubt its hardware

Replacement I897UCKB2 build is not seen by Windows 7

I have two windows 7 pcs that both recognized my replacement I897UCKB2 phone that I got a little over a week ago. I installed Kies on one of them to upgrade my wife's Cappy to UCKB1. I connected my phone and saw an error that it wasn't recognized. I have uninstalled KIES, the drivers, rebooted, cleaned out Samsung registry entries, rebooted (many times), tried different ports (including on the back), etc - no dice. I tried the other pc which hasn't had any changes and that doesn't recognize it either.
I know the cable is good because my wife's UCKB2 (was replaced as well) is seen no problem using the same cable and computer.
I have tried with my phone in debug and not - mass storage, KIES, ask on connection - etc. I did previously root the phone with SuperOneClick on this build. I was about to flash a custom ROM tonight after waiting a bit but now I can't get any computer to see it although the phone does start charging. I haven't yet tried linux and heimdall but that is about the only thing I can think of at this point.
I started wondering if Kies somehow caused a problem on the phone - maybe because it was rooted? I tried restoring CWM since I have Titanium backup working and busybox, etc. In CWM I tried "reboot into recovery" and then I see the original 3e recovery. I tried "reinstall packages" and it fails the signature verification. I have flashed ROMs many times in the past and have never been "stuck" like this... Any ideas?
I would try flashing the original stock eclair, there is an odin one click around that will do it... "I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe". Then try kies mini.

I had a friend who had that problem. When he plugged his phone into his computer, the phone would start charging but Windows wouldn't even play a notification sound to show the phone was plugged in. He couldn't access USB storage mode or anything. He called Samsung and was told his phone would need to be reflashed. His three button combo didn't work, so we bought a jig on eBay. We could get the phone into download mode that way...but Windows still/I] wouldn't recognize it. He called Samsung again and they replaced it under warranty, without any hassle.
Well, are you sure that you have your usb drivers installed correctly? Have you tried seeing if adb is recognizing the phone? Also, make sure that it is plugged in on all sides on the phone end of the the USB (sometimes the phone charges when it is plugged but unless you plug it in all the way, the computer won't recognize it)
try those...

Thanks for the replies. I know the USB drivers are good because I can easily mount USB storage on my wife's captivate - same exact I897UCKB2 build with the same cable. Additionally, a second pc won't see my phone even though it did before. I have tried at least 6 different ports numerous times. I am thinking I need a replacement.
My question now is that it is rooted with busybox, etc and I can't use an unroot program from a PC. Will a factory reset under settings (not CWM) erase all traces of root?

Captivate i896 - Absolutely unable get Windows to recognize it

I'm trying to root my friend's Rogers Captivate i896 using Odin but can't get the computer to recognize the device. I tried installing the drivers mentioned throughout other threads. I've tried uninstalling Keis, uninstalling the drivers, connecting to different USB ports, tried several computers/laptops running XP & Win7, tried USB desbugging on/off, tried "mass storage/kies firmware update/ask when connected."
He got the phone with Eclair and when it became available he then updated to Froyo through Keis. Ever since that update he hasn't been able to get any computer to recognize the phone. When I root my sgs i9000 I did have an issue with "mtp application error" that ended up being a missing driver but with this i896 model I've tried several different drivers and still nothing.
I can't root if the Odin can't 'see' it, or is there another way? Any others out there that have had success? Any help is much appreciated.
First of all, you don't use Odin to root it. Odin won't see it when the phone is on; only in download mode. You will just need SuperOneClick in order to root.
It is also unclear whether you are trying to say that Windows won't recognize it, or just Odin

Windows in general won't recognize it. Even when I connect it to a mac, I hit the 'connect storage to pc" and it says it's connected but the internal/external hd do not mount. I used odin to root and put a rom (darky10.2) on my sgsi9000 and used the same instructions because the same steps also work for the captivate. I thought I read somewhere that I use Odin to go from Froyo to Gingerbread?
I'll looking at a SuperOneClick youtube vid & it says to connect the device to the pc & run superOneClick on the pc but how will that work if the issue is that the pc's can't detect the phone in the first place? btw thanks for the help.

Sure, you can use Odin/Heimdall to flash any stock firmware, but it's not going to help you if the phone can't be recognized. It sounds like something is physically malfunctioning. Are you using the USB cable that came with the phone? I suspect that either the cable or USB port is malfunctioning.
I thought the same thing but I am using the cable that came with the phone and I tried different ports. I also tried different laptops running different versions of windows. So strange. Ah well thanks for the help.
I had a similar problem with my captivate before I changed the ROM, but only on one particularly stubborn computer. I ended up having to go through this process to get my phone to connect:
- Uninstall the USB driver
- Reboot computer
- Connect phone with debugging off
- Install USB driver
- Reboot computer
- Connect phone with debugging on.
After that, it worked just fine in whatever mode I wanted.
You may have already tried that process, but if not I hope it helps.

Samsung Captivate only boots to download mode and won't recognize on PC

Okay.
I bought a Samsung Captivate from a company on Amazon a few weeks ago, and it started having the problem with the speaker cutting out. I took it apart to try the two fixed I'd googled - loosening the speaker screw and reseating the speaker ribbon - and neither worked, and now the speaker is completely dead. That isn't my biggest problem, though.
Somehow in the process of the above, I did something that made it so that the phone will only boot into download mode. I can hold down the power and volume buttons and get it to reboot, but it only reboots into download mode again, and won't recognize in windows via the USB cable. It did recognize once, and I used Odin3 to get it back to a factory reset image (it was running stock firmware, but I'd rooted it to remove the AT&T apps) thinking in vain that it might help, but it still only boots into download mode.
But there's the weird thing: It won't power off in download mode unless I pull the battery out, but if I put it back in then plug in the USB cable while holding both volume buttons, it boots right into android, no problem. Everything's fine except the speaker still doesn't work, it doesn't show to be charging while plugged into the USB cable, and still won't recognize the USB in Windows. But if I turn the phone off and back on, I'm back in non-recognizing download mode again.
Everything otherwise works fine once I get it into android, I can even tell it to erase all settings and factory reset, and it reboots itself, re-flashes to stock, and works fine until I power off and back on, then back to download mode.
So I guess the question is oh god what have I done?
Freud,
I too am having this issue with my roommate's phone. The only way I can get it to boot is if I perform a restore using a Odin3 image. However once it's turned off it only boots into download mode. I nor the roommate have opened the phone. It just one day decided to keep booting into download mode.
Any asistance in this matter would be appreciated! Thank you.

I can only offer a solution to the windows connection issue, once the phone is connected to pc, go into device manager and uninstall drivers for whatever it sees, unplug phone then plug back in and windows should reinstall drivers. Worked for me, odin wouldnt see phone . GL
This will solve your speaker issue
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1311&_nkw=samsung+i897+speaker&_sacat=0
And this should solve your download mode issue

I'm having a similar issue where my PC does not recognize the device. Right now I have no ROM installed, I have Devil Recovery, and I can only boot into recovery and Download Mode. However 2 different PC's will not recognize the phone. I've tried multiple cables and one PC was Windows 8, one was Windows Vista. Both had the most recent drivers installed. Nothing works....any clue? I can't mount the /sdcard or USB Storage while in recovery because the PC doesn't pick up the phone. The internal storage doesn't have a ROM or kernel to flash on it neither so I cannot flash anything. I have a captivate that has Devil Recovery and can boot into download mode but will computers will not recognize the device, drivers installed or not.

Have you tried to uninstall the current drivers, reboot pc and reinstall them?
Also, it could be devil kernel that is faulty. If Odin can recognize the phone, you could flash a different kernel. Or even flash stock KK4, then corn kernel and finally, the ROM you wanna flash through recovery.
I just cannot get the PC to recognize the phone at all, even in download mode. I've tried 2 pc's and multiple USB cables, samsung, non-samsung, motorola, universial. Nothing, just says USB cannot recognize this device. Reinstalled drivers on 2 pc's and rebooted several times. I am lost, I know I'm not bricked because I can access download mode and recovery. I do not have a ROM on my internal card so I can't flash a ROM and can't mount my phone to my PC. No clue what to do.

I just need my PC to recognize my device and I'd be good, odin would then recognize my device in download mode and I could flash a different kernel or rom.
Try cleaning out the micro usb port of ur phone. Maybe the contacts are not making good contact.

Still no luck...I got my PC at work to recognize the phone ONCE. It went through and recognized it like it normally would, however it wouldn't recognize it again. I've been trying on my PC at home all last night and all morning and still no go. It won't recognize it. Now one thing I thought about is that I am on Windows 8. The PC at work that recognized it was Windows Vista. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I wouldn't care so much if I didn't just sell it for $150 I just wanted to give the person a more updated ROM and ended up screwing something up when flashing the ROM.

Ok so I know you've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers several time. But what drivers are you using and when you plug the phone into your pc what is it showing as in the device manager?
They may be exactly what you are using but I added some drivers to this post you might want to try. Just unzip then through device manager update the drivers for your device manually and point it to that folder.
I added these drivers because I'm on Win8 as well and I noticed when I was in recovery that my phone wasn't showing up correctly in the device manager. After installing these drivers it was.
Thanks I'll try that when I get home, I am using the most recent drivers on the Samsung website for the Captivate.
So I got it to boot and be recognized by my computer and I used a 1 click method with CWM and it passed so the Odin flash. So no I basically have a on rooted captivate running 2.5 gingerbread and it is totally sellablebel now. I have no idea what caused my computer to recognize it I didn't even try your drivers yet, but thanks for trying to help.
