Hi all,
After reading all the great stuff about the NC recently, CM7, Phiremod and the honeycomb releases Ive convinced a mate of mine in California who's visting the UK to bring me one over to tinker with..
Now.. After doing some research Im overwhelmed with info and thought Id ask for "up to date" pointers..
1. Is there a straightforward guide to rooting and installing the NC, as I live in the UK Im not fussed about the original NC rom. I've seen Cyanogenmods wiki entry http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide is this the best approach?
2. Which rom is best? Plain CM7, Phiremod or Honeycomb as posted by deeper blue?
3. Any other pointers?
Sorry for such basic questions, im just overloaded and not 100% sure which is the best process to take.
thanks all in advance
Angelo
Take a look in the stickies, there are comprehensive guides to root....just make sure you're using the correct version. If your mate is buying a brand new one for you, you'll most likely need the version for rooting with partitions. I have used all 3 of the roms you mentioned and my personal preference is CM. Phiremod is just a heavily themed version of CM and the honeycomb build is ok, but it lacks some features and is still a bit buggy because the source code has not been released for honeycomb

If you decide on CM7 (which I personally recommend), I would look for "How to Install CynaogenMod 7 on the Nook Color" (can't post links) on YouTube. I personally found it very useful. If something seems off, make sure you look at the description and read some user comments. With the way this guy explains it it's practically idiot proof and it's unlikely you'll mess anything up.
thanks
Thanks Guys,
I've been doing more reading and yeah looks straightforward..
Considering Im not interested in the core B&N OS, I was thinking of installing CM7 to the internal memory and then perhaps installing Honeycomb (deeperblue version) on a memory stick to "play with".
From what I can tell the HC port is nice as a toy but not robust enough considering HC hasnt been released to AOSP.
Makes sense?
If you are looking to 'play with' honeycomb on a MicroSD install, check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1045018
You get Honeycomb and Phiremod in a dual-boot image tailored for a MicroSD install.
Read through the thread and see if it's to your taste.
For the most usable ROM, go with CM7. Just follow this guide in this post. Very simple.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
The only issue is if you have a "blue dot" with the newer partition. Just read the RED text at the beginning of that post.
After you get this running, you can read up a little more and create a SD card w/ Honeycomb or Phiremod to play around with. But CM7 is the most stable out there (well, I guess Phiremod is good to, because it is a customized CM7).
Good Luck.
Use CM7, it's the best for now.
HC is beauty but still a lot of work to be done.

+1 for this guide!
"The only issue is if you have a "blue dot" with the newer partition. Just read the RED text at the beginning of that post."
For some reason I thought that statement was obsoleted, am I wrong?
It was valid if you have v1.2 NC and flashing with CwM Recovery prior to v3.2.xx.
But since the instructions do indicate using v3.2.0.1 CwM, then why care about blue-dot or not since it has been taken care off unless v3.2.x.x not properly does the job.
Maybe because you have a choice in partition schemes?
You really will want to repartition the new nook. 1 gb is a very small partition for your programs. 5gb works much better and the change is fairly painless.

That's a reasonable reason but again, it shouldn't be highlighted in RED, ORANGE at best
In fact, since it's a choice of good, it should be in GREEN.
thanks guys
Thanks guys, Im in awe with all the feedback and comments this thread is getting..
yes, Ive received the NC today and its charging Also doing loads and loads of reading
My nook does have a bluedot so my partitions are 5gb Data/1Gb Media.
I'll probably leave it like so, considering CWM supports this now its ok, and put most of my media on an external 16gb microsd card..
If Im right I can still install apps into the 5gb partition right?
Also , if I understand it correctly I can actually install CM7 onto a microSD and simply boot from this right ,without rooting/installing CWM... ?

You can still install apps into the /data partition but pls note: if your NC isn't rooted, you can only install apps that offered by B&N. You do not have full access of Android Market.
About CM7, yes, you can run CM7 off uSD and not touching the eMMC (aka internal memory) at all. Be considered getting a Sandisk (class 2 or class 4)
B-i-g thanks
All,
BIG Thanks to everyone,
I've successfully (actually flawlessly), repartitioned my nook to the old standard and installed CM7 into the internal memory..
All flawlessly. Also ordered a sandisk 16gb memory card from amazon.co.uk, so that will hold most of the media..
I was considering making the main partition >1Gb (1.9Gb) but decided to leave it as it is for now.. It was so easy yo tweak I thought Id try it vanilla and then grow if I need to..
Awesome-ness
ok wheres my 5gb?
ok got one question now..
/media is supposed to have 5gb available..
CM7 doesnt appear to allow me to use it as a SD card.. but ive found it mounted as /mnt/emmc
How does one use it ??? I tried downloading pdfs and I was told that an SD card was required for this... :-( when i get home I was going to try mounting it via usb to a computer but is that the only way?
There are 2 things you need to know
1. If you're running CM7, you MUST have a uSD. "MUST" does seem to be a strong word but for some reason, that I still try to figure out, an external uSD is required. W/o it, you can still using it but there's some apps won't run if no uSD plugged. It means the NC works 99.9% w/o uSD. I guess I should take the "MUST" back, ehhh
2. If you're running the recently nightly-build CM7, the USB storage utitlity should already be implemented within the ROM. All you need to do is
1. Connect NC and PC via USB cable
2. by this time, the usb indicator should be appeared on the NC, tab on it
3. Tab on Connect USB to transfer .......
4. Turn USB Mass Storage on
5. by this time, PC should recognize the /media on the NOOK
6. do what you want to do

Hey Angelo, I just wanted to share my experience.
I love gadgets, and tinkering with gadgets. I am an IT manager/minor programmer/webmaster, etc. etc... so no surprise that I feel right at home here BUT, I also love to read and I think that the Nook app for Android is bunk (e.g. "poor") compared to the stock NC experience.
I decided pretty early on that I wanted to keep the NC stock (partially due to warranty) and have a dual boot option for CM7. I had initially installed CM7 on my NC, replacing the stock rom all together. I ended up putting the stock ROM back on.
Here is a post from another thread where I outline that experience...and the guides that I use.
I talk about partitions in that post, since you have a new NC, don't even bother yourself with that...just note the guides there that will get you where you want to go, either way....

Many (older) apps in on Android are designed to ONLY look for storage called "sdcard". So your 5gb of internal (emmc) called "Media" will not be able to be utilized by those Apps.
Apps that are better programmed and designed can access the memory called "Media".
Ok, first off let me say that I am a new member and love the site. There is a ton of great information on the site, but I seem to be having trouble finding an answer to my specific situation.
After hearing about honeycomb and gingerbread being installed on the NC, I decided to give it a shot. After reviewing each OS, I decided on going with gingerbread. I followed a youtube video and a few threads on XDA and eventually installed the gingerbread OS, Gapps, and Netflix.apk files on my Nook. Everything worked fairly well and I was happy.
My question to you all is, would there be a way to take all the apps, OS, etc. that I currently have on my Rooted NC and make an image of it to then put on a bootable SD card?
My ideal end result would be to have:
1. a Bootable SD card with my current apps, OS, etc. on it.
2. a freshly restored nook color.
3. the ability to either remove the SD card to switch between the GB/NC OS, or have a boot option when booting up the Nook.
Any help with this process would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Nick (Nudarkshadowl)
I rooted my Nook Color, originally v. 1.3 (with Manual Nooter-4.5.18, -4.6.16). The rooting appeared to be successful, but was unstable in that it wouldn't survive a power-cycle. Eventually, I gave up, and decided to revert to straight B&N Nook. I did this by clearing data, root, system, and running "nook-complete-restore-1.0.1.zip. That worked, but with a couple of big flaws: 1) I now cannot "see" the NookColor internal rom when I plug its usb port into my computer! Cabling, computer software, etc., is in order, since when I have a microSD installed on the NC, it does mount on the computer (Mac), and allows file transfer to-and-from. (Also "invisible" on Linux and MSWin machines.)
2) A consequence is that I cannot copy "generic-sdcard-v1.3.img.zip" to NC for purposes of "upgrading" back to v.1.3; also when I attempt to download any archived books from N&B: the download starts, then abruptly stops, presumably because it can find no internal rom in which to store them.
In short, I've bricked the unbrickable NC! Anybody have any ideas?
Lol you cannot brick the Nook. You are using a firmware that your Nook was not designed to handle.
Flash this with clockwork to update to 1.2 and regain your internal storage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520

Can you revert straight to B&N 1.3 stock ROM? Why went all the way down to 1.0.1?
Indeed, koopakido8, it takes more of a Philistine than me to brick a NC! Your diagnosis and remedy were both spot on. Thanks
Hi guys,
This is my first time posting but I have lurked on the forum for a long time so I first want to thank all of you for all the great information that has helped me root my phones, my first nook, customs roms and all. You guys are amazingly smart and makes me wish I played a little less sports in school and studied a little more. So again, thank you for all the sharing of knowledge on this forum.
So to my problem. I have had a Nook for months, was running Cm7 and life was grand. It was on my dresser and my dog knocked it off and split the screen right down the middle. I went 2 days ago and purchased a new one. With the issues of the locked bootloader on the Nook Tablet I decided to stay with the Color that I had already grown to love.
I have been trying to root it but keep running in to problem after problem. I downloaded win32 and half the time when I try to put the CWR image on the SD I get error 8. I have found many ways on here to fix that but it still happens HALF the time. I am running it as admin and running the oldest version. The other half of the time it will look like it is burning to image and says it is done. But after it finishes my computer will not let me open the SD device to put the zip files on it. When I try it says that it must format the SD card to open it. Every time.
Also, just to check if everything is working right, after it says it has finished burning the image on the SD I have put it in the nook to make sure it boots in to CWR, it does not. It boots normal.
My nook is version 1.2.0, I use the correct file for my SD card size, I format it using Panasonic SD Formatter and I cross my fingers, click my heels 3 times and wish upon a star. Nothing is working.
I believe the issue is my computer. I am running 32bit Vista on an older computer. I believe last time I rooted my first nook I used the laptop, but that computer has since exploded in a ball of fire and is no longer available to me.
I'm stressed. I am at the point where I would be willing to pay for somebody to mail me a boot ready SD card.
Any advice is appreciated and thank you in advance.
I assume
+ you have 2 NC, one that been knocked off by your dog and one is new, v1.2.
+ you want to run CM7 off the uSD
am I right?
Correct. I have the broke one with a non working screen and the new one which is 1.2.0
I do not want to run Cm7 off the SD but install it to internal memory. I want to flash CM7 on it and for it to never know it used to be a nook.
Have you considered the possibility you have a bad sdcard on your hands? Thats what it sounds like to me, either that or a bad card reader.
Also try redownloading the image file and maybe pointing us to the link your using so we can verify its correct. I actually just mounted the usb once I was in CWM and transferred the zip files I needed over then.
I have considered that. I have used multiple SD cards, I am trying a different new one at this moment as well. It very well could be the card reader, if that is the case then I am in trouble because there is not much I can do about it.
Here is the version of Win32 I was using.
Trying that one now. Thank you.
Edit.
I downloaded the different win32 and it wrote the image right away. I then went to open the card to pull the zip files on it but again when I try to open it I am told that I need to format it before I can use the disk.
This is frustrating.
Once again though I want to say I am very appreciative of all the help.
Edit Edit:
I put the SDcard in to the nook just to see if it would load CWR from the SD and again it did not and simply booted as normal.
Are you running Win32 as Admin?
---------------------------------
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
I am running it as admin. I learned that lesson the first time I rooted. I am pretty sure the issue is my computer. I've updated my drivers but I am nit sure why there is such an issue. The computer is more than 5 years old so there could be a number of issues.
At this point, I would be more than happy to pay somebody to send me an sd card and return it to them. I travel often for work and it is such a geeat tool for my business and I did not realize how hard my every day work would be without it.
Once I write the image file my computer will not let me open the disk to place the zip files. If I could get past that it would be ok, I just can not figure out why it keeps wanting to format the disk before it will let me open it after writing the CWR image file.
Yep the issue is the burning if the image. Make sure you use one of the USB ports on the back of your machine when burning the image. I've found that the ones in the front can cause issues depending on the machine used.
It sounds crazy, but try formatting the card in your Nook first. I think it might solve your problem.
Alright we got everything working now!
So I tried a few different sd cards. I would use the size of image for the size of SD card. 2gb and 8gb. I formatted the 8gb and used only the 1gb image and it worked no problems.
I had followed some instructions that ended up giving me the black screen of death when it would start to boot up. I reformatted and flashed 1.0.1 stock nook, then re-flashed CM7 and all is well now.
Thanks guys!
Hello fellas, so I followed one of Leapinlar's guides on how to install CM11 onto my Nook HD+ 16gb. Everything went great and my Nook has been performing flawlessly all this time. I happen so have two Nook HD+ devices, and now that I know how much better CyanogenMod is compared to the stock OS, I want to install CM11 on the second one as well. I still have the bootable 2GB SD card I used to install CM11 on the Nook (used same card to backup stock B&N OS). At this stage, I plan on using the Nook until it dies on me, gets broken, or stolen. I don't see why I would go back to the stock OS.
1. Could I use the same bootable SD card to install CM11 onto the second Nook? was the serial # or anything of that sort saved onto the SD card making it unique to the device or something?
2. I have already done a Full baseline backup of my Nook on a FAT32-formatted SD card that isn't bootable. Is this backup better than the original bootable backup SD I made originally? Why would I still need the original stock B&N OS backup?
I couldn't find any threads on the subject, so I'm kind of hesitant to try it myself. Don't want to brick the Nook. Maybe one of you has tried it. Well, Happy Holidays to all of you. Thanks for the great forum.

My understanding is that even bootable variants of CM11 still go to the Nook's internal storage to get device serial #, MAC address, etc. So, one bootable SD card should be portable between devices.
I originally created a bootable SDcard variant of CM11 and liked it so much, that I decided to install it internally. Before I did that, however, I did back up the entire device (in case I decide to sell it). I then (search for the thread) made a bootable SDcard with B&N's OS v2.20. That way, if there's ever a reason you want to go back to the B&N OS, you can.

Yes the same bootable SD can be used on multiple HD+ devices. But the backup files from the first device should be moved somewhere else since there is not room for two different backups on a 2GB card. And that first backup is unique to that device and should not be used on the second device, but the basic CWM is ok to use.
The original stock backup is useful if you want to go back to the way it was before installing CM. But it is not really necessary since you can flash the stock ROM from my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature (item 6) to get back to original out of the box condition. This might be useful if you need to return the device to B&N under warranty. Having CM installed on it when you return it voids the warranty.

I'm sorry, one last question. Would it be accurate to say that I can drag and drop the original B&N backup file I have in my 2GB sd card to my computer, zip it, save it, delete it from the sd card, and then do the same process for the second Nook HD+? Zip, save, and delete the original backup. Would the sd card still be bootable to install CM if I were to play around with only the backup and nothing else? DeanGibson and you leapinlar have pretty much answered my question completely. At this point I just want to pick my brain, all of this was pretty interesting. I won't bother you guys with any more questions regarding this subject, so thank you very much for the help.

Yes you can copy the backup files to your PC and delete the originals, but there is no need to zip them since they are already compressed and it is best to leave them native since they need to retain their md5 sums. The card will still be bootable.
