Why not just flash a stock rom, update it to 2.3.4 then root it?

What's the best way to root it? It's been a while and remember going through some hoops to get mine working.

I'm assuming you'll be on stock recovery, you simply go back to bootloader and flash clockwork or Armon and flash the SU zip file again.
How I did it :
Flash FR91
Flash stock recovery
Let it boot
Force check in
Download 2.3.3 update and let it reboot
Force check in one more time
Download 2.3.4 update and let it reboot
Go back to bootloader and flash Armon/Clockwork
Flash SU.zip
Done I have root on 2.3.4 STOCK
Where can the SU.zip be found? Running ClockworkMod Recovery.
Search ChainsDD in the dev section

When there is one available it will be posted in the android development forum.
but if you are impatient... try Blandroid 2.3.4... it's AOSP-based, rooted and 99% stock... http://blandroid.org/downloads
Geo411m usually posts a nice near stock custom ROM based on each release. If you watch the development forum for this username I bet you'll see one pop-up soon after the N1 specific code is officially available. I've used them before with good results and there is a theme post with nice themes made specifically for Geo's ROMs.
I'm using a rooted version of FRG83G (2.2.2) but I can't do the ota update because of my rooted version.
Is there a way to upgrade my OS ? (my boot loader is unlocked)

Backup ask your data with Titanium.
Passimg back to stock, and update to 2.3.4.
fastboot flash recovery.
Use recovery to install ChainsDD's su.
Restore your Titanium backup...
Blandroid is very good. It contains even my local language, so it's even better than stock from Google. Can be installed as stock replacement.
Flash FR91, Go into HBOOT and flash the stock recovery, start up, force checkin and let it update ( you only have 1 chance at this if you screw up you'd have to do the whole thing again ).
Download SU.zip and flash from recovery.
There you go you have 2.3.4 stock with root.

Yeah? I'm not sure if that's the way you say it but hboot flash recovery recovery.img ?
Or is it called bootloader...
That would be fastboot, not hboot.
Why would you want a stock recovery, and how do you plan on flashing the su.zip with a stock recovery?
My bad, I keep on getting confused with G1.
If you do not have stock recovery, it will not flash the OTA update from 2.2 to 2.3.3 then 2.3.4. After the sequence is done you can go back into fastboot and flash a custom recovery. After that you can flash SU.zip
You can flash an update from any recovery, just turn the signature verification off...
Do-it-yourself way....
1. Get 2.3.4 system dump from here, and Android Kitchen here.(If your OS is Windows, you will need to install modified Cygwin to use it)
2. Cook the system dump files with Android Kitchen.
3. ?
4. Now you have rooted 'stock' 2.3.4 package that can be flashed on custom recovery!

But this is an ota update. Mine did not flash. It went back into recovery after downloading the ota update but it will not flash.
You can flash OTAs through any recovery, just turn the signature verification off. I've done it many times, including the update 2.3.4...

Then I must have done something wrong then. All mine did was boot back into recovery and stay there without flashing anything. I still made it work though.
Im trying to do an ics update on my rogers captivate... I have the files i need to get it done but i just cant get it into the rom recovery mode. I know a little about this stuff but not a whole lot (learning as i go along!). I have Recovery 3e on it right now and by the sounds of it, this is not going to work to get it into rom recovery mode... so i downloaded the rom explorer and got a file that was supposed to replace 3e with 2e or something of that matter so i can get it in the right recovery mode to upload ics onto my phone. I moved the file to system/bin and renamed the old recovery file recovery.bak i than moved the other recovery file to the same place and changed the permissions! i rebooted my phone and still nothing! Any help would be greatly apreciatted... and dumb it down a bit so i can understand!

Simple way: Download the Heimdall one click in my signature. Backup the stuff on your phone. Go into download mode. Run the one-click. Install the drivers that come with it (it will tell you how). Click the big "flash" button. You will have CWM when it's done, and can flash from there.
^Or you could just flash a kernel with CWM build into it.
The ideal platform for flashing an ICS Rom has to be CWM + Root + Stock GB ROM ( kk4 leak ).
If you got some patience, do it in order.
1. Root your phone.
2. Install CWM recovery.
3. Optional :Flash any GB Rom ( Preferably any one of those captivate leaked roms) using CWM.
4. Download ICS ROM (teamhacksung seems to be stable) and Flash TWICE through CWM
Enjoy

Do not post questions in General, use Q&A.

Yes . Root is technically a Linux kernel super user privilege

so then you know that it doesnt matter if you have root or not when you are in CWM, since you arent in an OS....?
therefore, ROOTING is not necessary to flash a new rom..
I also am on rogers and what I did was to use an heimdall 1-click package that flashed CWM for me then I used CWM to flash an ICS build.

Did You get this resolved?
If yes, what are the files required, I am new to the android rooting arena
This post will contain N8013 stock kernel and recovery images. For UEALGB these were dumped from a device that was rooted using the "root injection of /system" approach. For UEALH2, they are simply extracted from the Kies dump at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847706 so that you can get a stock kernel or recovery without downloading 1GB of files.
If you flash any of these using Odin, they should not trigger your flash counter. Note that for some reason, flashing these in Heimdall will trigger the counter (unlike Heimdall on most other devices).
Pardon for some ignorance. What should be the steps to follow in order to root from an updated to latest OTA update stock Rom on a 32gb USA version? Do I need to flash the kernel, or just recovery should be ok?

Why don't u ask this in the root thread?
Here is what you should do:
Root Via CWM (method 2 in the root thread)
1. Download and put the superuserzip on your internal memory on your device
2. In odin uncheck auto reboot and load the cwmrecovery tar in the pda slot
3. Start odin
4. Once finished boot directly into clockwork (volume up and power til the samsung screen then let go of power while holding volume up)
5. Use the volume rockers to scroll in clockwork cause its finicky and flash the superuser zip you put on your device.
6. reboot
7. Make sure you have root and touch screen and pen works
8. Download goo manager
9. In goo manager hit menu and hit the install recovery script
10. DONE
Have any problems odin back to a stock image and if things go bad flash entropys triangle away kernel and clear your binary count
Any chance you could update the thread to account for the updated kernel for the N8013, that adds support for exFAT?

I have the Canadian 8010 model, and installed the prerooted firmware that was provided. It didnt flash right the first time but the second time it did. Everything works great and Im rooted with CWM. The only thing I noticed is that it says I have the 8013 model now which is probably because of the firmware but its not a big deal.

You can't, but you can flash the entire H2 ODIN image from here (about 1GB):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847706
and not lose your data. You lose root though (which you can get again through the alternate recovery method)

Can anyone post the UEALI3 stock recovery? I want to root my Note, but want to root my Note with the CWM method, and go back to stock recovery so I can get OTA updates.
Thank you.
I want to go back to stock recovery and rom and thanks to joemm I got the recovery but can anyone help me to a non-rooted stock rom? Also, do I load the stock rom before I flash the stock recovery?
I take it you did not make a back up of the original non rooted ROM, so what you can do is install the stock rooted ROM from the Dev thread. Next log onto google account....go to the market and download root explorer..use it to navigate to system/app and delete super users app...this will remove super user app from the app drawer...next install the zip for stock recovery on your sd card..next boot into recovery...wipe data...this will remove all your info from the phone..reboot..skip signing in to any accounts...once booted check the app drawer superuser should be gone...now the phone is still technically rooted but there will be no visible sign of being rooted...next boot into recovery and flash the zip I made to flash the stock recovery.....next reboot recovery...should be on stock recovery...next reboot system...should be on a stock phone with no visible signs of being rooted...that's it.

HTC Pushed an update to my HTC One Dev Ed tonight..
1.29.1540.16
When it tries to flash the update it just goes into TWRP recovery. No other actions.
I then drilled down to the directory that it downloaded to /data/media/downloads and tried to flash with TWRP.. no dice.
Here is the update.. but honestly I don't know what it does.
any Idea on what is preventing the flash?

You must go back to stock recovery in order for the update to successfully flash on your device.
You don't need the update from HTC, just go and flash the latest revolution 10.2 rom, it is running 4.2.2 and it has some nice performance tweaks. And it isn't modified so it's running sense 5.

For some of us, going to a different ROM is not a viable choice, and frankly a solution to load a different ROM does not answer the original question.
Hi I have the same problem here.
When I try to install stock 4.2.2, the phone reboot & automatically enter TWRP & thus stock update was unable to run.

None of the HTC direct updates will work while TWRP is installed.
you will have to
Fastboot flash (stock recovery .img)
then the updated from HTC works with no problems. pst if you can't find the img
