[Q] CM7/MIUI and 850mhz Band on i9000m - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried a lot of combinations possible and can't seem to get the 850mhz band enabled on my i9000M. Anybody else able to get good reception with miui/cm7 and an i9000m in canada?

Just flash the CM7 KC1 modem from the CM7 sourceforge repository.

There are no Bell modems in the SF repository. I've attached KC1.

yay that worked! thanks guys!

Just wondering, how is KC1 vs. JL2? Better GPS/Battery life?

All the Canadian ones are in the Captivate directory. They're still in the SF repository. Why would anyone look in the i9000 section to find 850mhz capable basebands?

I ran JL2 for months, Then KC1 for a while. Now onto 2.3.3 with KC1 modem. Not much difference between JL2 and KC1. Both have amazing battery life. The biggest difference is I find the KC1 modem way better. I dropped calls at my house often with the last few months of JL2 but now I get good reception.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to check if my 850 bands are on or not. Or if the modem is even installed.
Anyone who could guide me in the right direction would be most kind.
For some reason my web browser doesn't connect through 3G, but it does with wifi, any hints?
Also thanks for the modem shadoslayer.

Because the Captivate != i9000m? I wouldn't think to check under the captivate section for modems for the i9000m, since the captivate is the SGH-i896. Considering it is a different build of CM7 for the captivate and the two aren't compatible, I wouldn't have thought the modems were either.

On the status bar, do you have "3G" or "H" beside the signal bars? If you have a H, you're using HSDPA, which is good.
As for checking the bands under CM7, I have no idea how either and would really like to know since CM doesn't support samsung unstructured supplementary service data (USSD)...
And np on the modem and thanks for Furry for pointing out the modems are in the captivate section of sourceforge.

hey guys, while on this topic. What do you guys get with speed test? I'm on CM7 and KC1 and just ran it. Got 113ms ping, 1.27Mbps, 3.28Mbps. This is at 4:30pm. Ran it a few times, switching between Toronto and Oakville servers. Slow download
Edit:
Sigh. Just reran and got 6.11Mbps down and 1.59Mbps. Much better.

Yeah I have the H, so HSDPA is working, I suspect that's good for rural areas and low signal areas and I'm using most of my bands?
Also found this:
*#*#4636#*#* on phone dial pad, select phone information
It gets a bit of info on the radio methinks, but it hasn't gotten me closer to figuring out why my browsers only connect via wifi.

I didn't know about that code, thanks. Still doesn't show if the phone is on 1900/850 though. And I'm curious, when/how does the phone decide to switch between the two?
Anyway, I'm guessing there is a problem with the APN. Thats what it sounds like anyway... Check your settings against this: http://support.bell.ca/en-on/Mobili..._Nexus_One_for_the_Bell_Mobility_HSPA_network

I restarted my phone and re selected, de selected bell for network operators. Double checked the APN settings (which were correct) Then went into proxy settings under system, and noticed the proxy was off, I turned that on, now everything is working dandy!
Strange I thought I did that before, but perhaps I didn't. Thanks Again!

Those are Samsung USSD codes and will work fine under any Samsung based rom, but they will not work under CM7. Those USSD codes must be in code either not released or not released under GPL for use in CM7.
I've asked a bunch of times and no one ever answered, so I'm assuming there is no way under CM7 to see which band the phone is currently using, which is incredibly frustrating!

I know on my Carrier (Telstra Australia) when it is connected to 850 it is connected to 'Telstra' and when its on 2100 its connected to '3Telstra'. I checked that in settings, above phone, Phone stats I think its called? Do you have something similar?
And I fixed my 3g but going to 2g and back to 3g Before that it was connoecting to 2100mhz :\ Weird..

Should we just keep bumping this thread until we get an answer?
I'm on CM7 with Bell as well and it works great out of the box, without knowing about this 850 band I dont know if I should flash the kc1 modem. Maybe just for kicks?

You have gotten the answer a few times...there is no way to check the band in CM7. If you feel you need one, raise it in the Dev forum once they open it back up to feature requests in a few weeks.
I would advise flashing KC1 and seeing how it goes. Keep an eye on your battery life, and how often the notification bar flips from 3G to H, and run Speedtests a few times a day. After a few days, decide if it is working better for you or not..if not, flash something else.
Modems are like fake IDs...if one doesn't work, flash another one.

[Q] [Solved] GSM Tmo Tab with JK3 modem, no service!

Hi everyone, I flashed different ROMs for a couple of weeks, and finally decide to settle down with OC 2.3.3, the July 15th latest one. However, the same problem occurred, which is with a Tmo Modem in the tab, I have great signal, EDGE data, and no phone function. With JK3, I got nothing, which is the main reason I switched back to Froyo at first.
I am a ATT user, holding a Tmo GT. I didn't find any fimilar threads, and in fact, I think this is a question needs precise answers.
Thanks in advance!
Updated on #4
UPDATE: I find the signal sometimes appeared and give me GPRS... So weird... I even reflash the rom again, not help. So any other paople could help me?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
You can use the t-mobile modem, and you will only get EDGE. You can use a vibrant modem and you can get voice and EDGE.
BUT YOU WILL NEVER GET 3G.
There are probably a five hundred posts on this.
And it will never matter which rom you use. It is only due to hardware limitations, as I explained to you elsewhere.
Thanks for the help, but you misunderstood. I know the edge and voice stuff, just the modem didnt work on my tab.
Since I absolutely want gingerbread this time, I finally figure this out, I went to wireless settings and select GSM only, instead of autoselect. NOW I can FINALLY make calls and get edge instead of gprs. I will keep tracked to see if this method could solve the problem eventually.
People see alot of similar threads and they forgot to care about simple problems because they thought it was old, which in fact isnt. Still thank this forum for bringing me all the great things!

Why can't you switch to a t-mobile sim card so you can enjoy the 3g?
Do u mean if I switch to tmobile I could get 3g and voice? I am managing a family plan right now and my wife is waiting for iphone 5, but if that is the situation, I might consider switching... ao attractive...

From my understanding TMO only provide 3G data plan for tab. No voice plan. Am i right rangercaptain? You did explain to me last time in other treat that only certain region receive the voice plan. Ex spain, israel etc. Or maybe my understanding is wrong? Haha,,just want some confirmation also on this matter. Im interested to know

You are 100% right.
T-mobile tabs in the USA get voice or 3g using the switch.
In a few other countries t-mobile tabs get voice and 3g, no switch needed.

Yes, sort of.
You would have to install the Rotohammer modem switch.
Mode #1 = voice, sms, and EDGE speed data.
Mode#2 = 3g data only.
Thank you for that info rangercaptain. You just add more knowledge to me.

GPS fix from fascinate 3G+ for Gingerbread

Hi,
I would like to post the fascinate 3G+ 2.3.3 Rom that the hardware seems same as Vibrant , so devs can have a look at it for a cyanogen or/and custom roms GPS Drivers.
I hope finally we have a solid driver for our GPS hardware

Pretty sure the GPS hardware on the Fascinate is quite different. Isn't it even a CDMA phone?? Thanks for the effort, but I am pretty sure these aren't the Droids we're looking for
If I'm wrong, I'd love for someone with more knowledge to correct me though!

notice the title of the thread says "Fascinate 3G+" and not "Fascinate". the Fascinate 3G+ is a device sold in Canada by Telus (model number T959D, I believe). It's GSM and is basically a rebranded Vibrant.
The GPS fix WILL NOT WORK. The hardware radio is the same as an i9000.
The vibrant is very diffrent from the other galaxy s variants because its the only model that supports 1700mhz 3g. To have this band, it requires a different hardware radio.
The fascinate 3g+ may look identical to the vibrant but the insides are very similar to an I9000 other than the front capacitive buttons.

Nope Fascinate 3G+ is a rebranded Vibrant, only different is reversed volume keys which if you flash fascinate 3g+ sbl.bin and boot.bin (bootloader) they fix them selves

No need to do it because i said so after all you need to flash a compatible rom before the bootloader so you have the correct partitions on the phone .
If you flash only the rom and not the bootloaders on a vibrant when you plugin any usb lead it will bootloop.
And why? We have cyanogen support, i dont see the benefits.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but these GPS files are working like garbage on my T-Mobile Vibrant. I let it go for 15 minutes, and still no lock. I replaced pretty much ever file that had anything to do with GPS in it's filename. It was a failure.
Also, FM Radio app refuses to install.
Honestly, all the nay-sayers need to settle down a tick. Any, and ALL attempts to fix the Ginger GPS issues with the Vibrant are welcome. Hell I've even gone as far as to put a piece of copper tape across the inside of my back plate (slightly better cell reception, no impact on GPS). So keep 'em coming! I'm grateful someone at least is working on it, even if it might be futilely, since waiting for Samsung/T-Mo to do it has created nothing but a bunch of bitter pessimists. And last time I checked, bitter pessimists don't improve GPS reception, no matter how hard you flash them!
Sent from my rough sketch of a Vibrant on a brick.
Hopefully the CM7 developers take a look at those files, (mainly atinm, and Kaik541). GPS is something I personally do not care about but will make others settle down.

[REF] Gingerbread GPS fixes and the vibrant - read before posting GPS fix

I'm seeing tons of GB GPS fixes for the vibrant even though most will not work.
I saw GPS files for the bell and virgin vibrant posted here and files for the
telus Fascinate 3G+. These files will not work because the vibrant carries a different hardware radio.
The T-mobile US Vibrant is a special variant as our phone is the only galaxy s device (other than the SGS4G) that has the 850,1700,1900,2100 bands, all other galaxy s variants have 850,900,1900,2100mhz bands. Our vibrant requires 1700 3g because thats what tmobile US uses for 3G, because of this difference we need a different hardware radio, That's also why we cannot use i9000 modems on the vibrant for tmobile US The bell and vibrant are just rebranded GT-i9000's and the Telus Fascinate 3G+ looks like a vibrant but may even be more similar to a captivate because of the hardware radio. Even though they may have the same styling or name it does not work because of the hardware radio.
The Captivate has a near identical (FM Radio is not present) hardware radio that allows it to use i9000 Modems and GPS files, same with the telus fascinate.
The vibrant and the SGS4G have different hardware radios to support 21mb/s HSPA+. These two hardware radios are similar enough to allow GPS to work but remain modems non-functioning. Romans GPS fix worked but had long lock times and poorly working compass.
Heathens Gingerbread gps fixed worked on the vibrant on 2.2 very well but fails on 2.3. What I think is the vibrant may have hardware similar enough to allow some files to work on one version of android but maybe completely useless on another version of android.
Just so you guys know,
Bell and virgins vibrants ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
Telus fascinates LOOK LIKE but ARE NOT T-mobile US vibrants
International galaxy s vibrants ARE Bell and Virgin Vibrants
Rodgers captivates ARE IDENTICAL to at&t captivates
The i9000 galaxy s and the bell and virgin vibrants HAVE NEAR IDENTICAL RADIOS to the rodgers and at&t captivates
Tmobile US SGS4G's are SIMILAR to the Tmobile US Vibrant
Subway IS NOT Quizno's
McDonald's IS NOT Burger king
Got it? okay good.

Just one tip philliple...when trying to sound like you know something never use the term "what I believe is". Don't get me wrong I am guilty of it also. Instead you might say "correct me if I'm wrong but..." Gives your statement an air of confidence and knowledge yet gives you an out if in fact what you said is incorrect. And I do know how old you are, we all do so respect there.
That said you are correct the GPS does require data in our case cellular data. While we can use the gps without cell data, on a wifi connection for instance, because the GPS is on a phone the code for the drivers would be written to connect to cell service. Therefore GPS files, such as drivers (some files that don't require code to the network will work, such as GPS conf.), can not just be pulled from any phone. This is why the files pulled from the Vibrant 4G work and the ones from Captivate do not.
Here is a link to a little light reading for anyone that wants to learn more about the GPS on their phone...http://stackoverflow.com/questions/33637/how-does-gps-in-a-mobile-phone-work-exactly Pay close attention to the AGPS section. I don't believe this is correct. Our phones have GPS hardware are capable of independent GPS, that is GPS without data assistance for a lock. It takes quite a bit longer without AGPS, but it is entirely possible. Try changing your GPS to standalone mode, disabling all other location services (via WiFi and via cell tower) and putting it into Airplane Mode, then launch Google Maps. You can obtain a lock.

[Q] How do I enable HSPA now that I've flashed to 2.3.4 on my Rogers Captivate?

Just finished flashing my Rogers Galaxy S Captivate to 2.3.4 with the ROM in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1233620
From what I've read it's a stock AT&T ROM. I backed up my APN settings using the "APN Back and Restore" app, seems to have worked just fine. Phone works, internet works, everything seems to work just fine.
However, on my stock 2.2 I was getting HSPA. I've read around the boards and it seems as if the stock AT&T ROMS don't have HSPA ability out of the gate. Can anyone recommend a solution for getting my HSPA speeds back?
That would require an I9000 kernel/modem combination. And I do not know if that would work on that firmware. Pretty sure it won't.
Oh I did read about that, but wasn't sure if it would work with this firmware as you have pointed out.

You are both correct from the reading I've done as well. The i9000 ROM's allow both HSDPA, and HSUPA(4G). The i897 ROM's make use of the faster DL speeds just as the i9000's but do not allow for HSUPA, but they enable the use of the Audience Chip, which gives better call quality than the i9000 ROM's.

HSDPA+HSUPA does not equal 4g.

in AT&T's eyes it does. at least thats what they like to trick their '4G' customers into thinking....

It's AT&T's version of "4G". It's really only the addition of the higher Upload speeds. Nothing changes regarding the DL speeds. In my area, upload speeds go from about 500-700kbps to around 1700kbps
Thanks for the help everyone, I appreciate the info.

[Q] Best Canada Rogers Modem ICS 4.0.3

I hope that is enough info. A buddy flashed my captivate up to ICS but the mobile data didn't work, could not get an internet connection. Someone reccomended trying a different modem. I'm with Rogers in Ontario, but when I boot the phone is shows AT&T. What is the best modem and where do I get??
Thanks!
I've been using the JK4 modem ever since I flashed my first custom from and its never let me down! Although it all depends on your location I believe, try a few out!
Sent from my Rogers i896 running Miui V4 Port or CM9!
Thanks, but any idea where to find it?
KG3 has also worked pretty good to me, a little searching will help you find the modems my friend. As for the internet etc not working, check your APN settings under 'mobile networks', again search is your friend.
kp1 is stellar for me...youll only get att if your in the gta area and have roaming turned on...sometimes it bounces to att towers.

OP, sorry to hear that... I have a Rogers i896 too, and I did a flash to ICS 4.0.3 today as well without having too much glitch <knock, knock>.
After flashing done, I went into the APNs setting and noticed that Chatr Internet was being selected and it was selected when I went into the APNs setting screen.
I then selected to Rogers one, and sooner after I tested the mobile data and confirmed phone was able to surf the web.
Hey I'm rogers in southern Ontario too and after switching to any ics rooms my signal went to crap! I tried a ton of different modems and in the end the UKG3 modem was the best by far and it appears that most Canadian users swear by it as well. I get great signal even in spots where I was poor before. Data is great. Speaker and sound is great so I use that and reflash it on any from upgrades or changes.
If u go to the captivate forum and android development and then to the stickies there...its one of the first pages that has a huge list. Can't miss it.

captivate development section sticky. also it would really help if you said WHICH ics you have. some of them are really buggy. that might explain your problem... they are all still in beta stage. also might want to check your APN settings. make sure they match these
Rogers APN settings

3G <-> H depends on the connectivity and signal strength in the area.

Not always H though. It switches to 3G whenever there is a need to. I also started experienced another problem (posted in ICSSGS Q&A thread, waiting for clarification and help).
When I am on wifi at home, after a period of idle, both wifi and phone signal bars greyed out. Yes, both greyed out. From what I've read on this forum, greyed out bars on wifi and phone signal doesn't mean you're disconnected. While both icons were greyed out, I tried the following:-
make phone call: passed
receive phone call: passed
surfing on the web: failed
attempt to send a Whatsapp mesg: failed
In this case, I would have to turn off then turn on its wifi to get connected again.
That's enough frustration tho :S :S :S

well.. you need to be on an i9000 based rom with i9000 modem to get H (hspa) speed...and signal strength, and depends if your phone is trying to do anything....

Fair enough... my phone (Rogers i896) has been flashed to ICSSGS 4.0.3 with KG3 modem. Does it mean it's on i9000 based rom with i9000 modem? Baseband version is I9000UGKG3.
Any comment would be helpful as I am still learning you all big bros.
yup all our ICS roms are based on an i9000 CM9 kernel, and usually packaged with an i9000 modem.
even dark night, which is ported from galaxy nexus runs on our phone with the i9000 CM9 kernels..
CM9 is ICS based cyanogenmod rom... thats a whole other discussion..
Little OT (excuse me) about modem... to get the best fit modem to your phone matching the area could improve data or voice or both capability?
each user swears by a different modem in different places around the world...
but see this page..
sticky top of dev section... lots of information, some is only opinion..
【MODEMS】【100+ Captivate I897 ♦ I9000 ♦ CM7/MIUI ♦ ICS】+【Google Location Map】
click the map to go to another page with interactive info map of what users claim they get in area...

Yup... looked at the page of list of available modems and tried all possible ones for my area, and chose the best one I think it's the best after installed all 3 listed.
I think I have some good speed in the area where I am in now. However, the new modem DOES NOT help the wifi icon/data bars greyed out issue :/
Does anyone have ICS with Data working with Rogers Captivate
Hi,
I ported ICS (ROM WeUI) on my Captivate. Everything works great except that I can barely connect to Rogers Network in Toronto. No data, no calls, no mms.
Does anyone have a solution? I have tried most modems jk4, kc1, kp1, jl2, kg3.
If you have a good combination of ROM+kernel+modem please tell me.
I would hate going back to Android 2.3
Samsung Captivate. Rooted.
Kernel. Semaphore 3.0.8.
ROM. WeUI v0.9.8 by NightShack
Modem. I9088ZNKP1.
