[Q] How can I format a partitioned SD? - Nook Color General

Hey all, I want to write a new image to what is currently a verygreen size-agnostic card, but Windows, EASEUS and the NC itself only see the boot partition. If I try to format it from Windows 7 x64, will it just wipe the partition, or format the whole card? Is there a way to do it from CWM?
I have:
verygreen's latest size-agnostic card running CM7.0.3 + dal's 4/24 OC kernel
the 3.1 beta running dal's 5/13 OC kernel on eMMC
the latest CWM on eMMC
EASEUS on my PC
I do not have:
another SD card
a card reader other than the NC
Obviously "get a card reader" and "get another card" are answers I could come up with myself. Do I have any options using what I have? The goal is to write racks' Phiremod/HC dual-boot to the card.
ETA: I am hesitant to attempt formatting from CM7 due to the big red letters in the dev thread for 3.1:
DO NOT FORMAT YOUR SD CARD IN CM7. DUE TO A VOLD ISSUE THIS WILL FORMAT YOUR /BOOT INSTEAD OF THE SD CARD!
****Should be fixed in nightly 13****

Does that still apply? Does it apply to the 7.0.3 build? Would flashing eMMC to CM7.0.3 and formatting the card be a possibility?
UPDATE [SOLVED]: As the final post says, the best method to revert a bootable card to storage seems to be, in EASEUS, deleting all partitions except the "SDcard/CM7 SDcard" partition, then dragging that partition to take up the unallocated space.

I use XP and using a USB adapter plug it in go to my computer right click on the drive which will say boot and click format. It takes about 5 seconds to format. Tou will get a warning. Not sure if it is the same with Win 7 but cannot see why it wouldn't format the same way.

Well, I did order a card reader from Amazon. This one seems like it may actually come in handy down the road and not be a one-use thing, and it should be here tomorrow. Maybe for experimentation's sake I'll do one last back-up and try formatting the card in the NC.
I can't sync my apps from Titanium + Dropbox until I get Titanium pointed at a bigger partition.

In the interest of completeness and for the unknown googler: Windows was incapable of formating any but the first partition of the card whether in the NC or a card reader. I tried "Wipe drive" in EASEUS, after which neither Windows Explorer nor the NC would recognize the card to format it. I wrote a new image to it (the HC/Ph dual boot) with WinImage, which worked fine. However, CM7 on the NC still only had access to the boot partition, and I needed more space so that I could sync Titanium Backup with Dropbox to restore my apps and settings from my old SD installation.
Again, there was no formating the partitioned card, so in EASEUS I deleted all the partitions except SDcard, extended that partition, and then formatted it in Windows. I was almost right--the last step was not only a waste of time, but rendered the card readable to Windows but not to CM7 or CWM. So, I once again wrote an image to the card, deleted all the other partitions, extended SDcard to to take up the unallocated space, and then jammed the card in the NC: success!
And Titanium Backup FCed whenever I tried to sync to Dropbox :/
Well, so be it. I manually replaced the Titanium Backup folder on the SD card with the one from my Dropbox, and it's almost done restoring now #knockonwood

[Q] Formatting Micro sd

hi, i've been trying to format my microsd card and partition it to fat32 and ext4.
i have used paragon partition manager but its only v9 so its only able to partition to ext3.
subsequently i used gparted but i booted and did not detect my micro sd card at all, making it impossible to partition.
Any ideas/workaround? or other programs to do so?
Cheers
Search google for 'gparted'. Burn the image and boot it to partition for free. Used it myself to create fat32 and ext4. It works flawlessly

i tried that but i have no idea why the gparted do not recognise my microsd card. all it recognise was the harddisk only, therefore its not even listed on the list on formatable memory slots
I am getting the same issue, I also tried Paragon but even that is not allowing me to create a new partition.
I starting to think it's my SD card, I got a 8GB Samsung Class 6 card.
I really want to apply this mimocan fix.
Update:
I tried it on my work machine and GParted worked, going to install samset 1.9b now.
I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010 and it worked without problems.
When booted up in gparted you insert your sd card and after that you need to hit the "refresh" option in one of the menus, cant remember the exact name of the menu, but try it if you havnt.

Can't Format SD Card

I lost my sd card data flashing a rom. Could not mount it even thru recovery. Got a card reader, but it won't format it.
Using Mini Partition Tool to troubleshoot. I am not at a point where it shows three partitions. The main 16gb unallocated, logical. The ext3 unformatted 500mb, primary (think I did that by mistake when trying to recover partition). And a 32mb unallocated, logical. All zero used memory.
I need to get back to one partition allocated, primary. Then I can get sd data back on it and reformat thru recovery.
Again using Mini Partition Wizard
Any help please!
OK,
I got it repartitioned as primary and formatted, bu sd card from pc now.
Hope phone recognizes it.
Will update, if I need further help.
Ken
If you want a good program to format your sd card, try SD Formatter.
Download and install that, plug in your sdcard into your sd card reader and format it.
Choose Full Erase On (if possible) and Resize On. It will format your sdcard to factory default and that means even the ext partition will be gone too.
Well, all transferred. Still won't mount. Says can't mount either of the dev/blocks mmcb1k0p1 and mmcb1k0.
Staus bar says sd card damaged.
?????
musashiken,
Thanks, typing while you posted. Based on my last post should I still do that?
Ken
Yeah I think you should try to reformat again with the program I suggested, as that will full format your sd card.
Once done, put your sd card back to the phone and create ext partition in recovery.
At work now but will be working on it.
Thanks
Ken
musashiken,
Thanks, appreciate all your help
That program worked, and I am back up and running
Ken
Glad it worked for you. My sd card kept giving me problems and I have to use this every few rom flashes.
I have a similar problem. I installed a new 32 gb SDHC card in a CDMA Hero running Cryogenmod. All was working well for about 10 days, then I got an error that no SD card was found. I had the original card and tried to get to the Clockwork recovery, no luck. Finally, through Rom manager, (flash alternate recovery to Ramon, then back to Clockwork, I was able to boot into recovery.
I still cannot format the new SDHC card, through Recovery, Windows 7, or the Panasonic program listed above. The Windows format option sees the card as a FAT 121mb card, so does the above program. Is this new card toast? It came with a lifetime warranty from Kingston, but I am mad that it did not make 2 weeks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Craig
If sdformatter did not work it may be bad.
I always had good luck with it.

How do I get my sd card back to 8gb?

-My Computer-Right click on SD card Drive- Format - Card is now 8 Gigabytes
Had this last night but try formatting the SD card within your nook. I had an SD card with 1 gig image and was having the same problem.
Just to clarify. Use the format options within the nook. Sorry not in front of Nook at the moment.

I read that on CM7 on eMMC when doing that it formats the boot on the nook not the sd card, so did you do this or just think its the way to do it. THanks
Use this program, the free edition:
EASEUS Partition Manager
Windows can only see the first partition on your card. There are probably 4 partitions left from your emmc install. Plug your microSD card into your computer and launch EASEUS. You should see the driver letter assigned to your microSD card and 3 other unassigned partitions on your card. Right click on each of those partitions and delete them. Then either resize the primary partition Windows can see to the full size of the card, or delete that partition, then create a primary partition on the card that uses the full card size. You should now have your full capacity back.

No, I actually did the format using CM7 on my Nook Color. Bit hazy on the exact details, but if you look at the SD storage section in the Settings you should see the different SD cards and will show which to format. I had used my 8 gig SD card as a 120 meg SD boot with CWM so this SD card kept showing available space of about 120 meg (so I chose this to format).
'Should' be fairly obvious but can understand your hesitation.
FYI, I tried Easues Partition on my Windows 7 64 bit machine but did not recognize. Might be worth trying XP or Linux if you have but I would test the above option (Backup everything if concerned). I had just flashed CM7 to my nook so wasn't too bothered if I lost anything.
I can check when I get home.

Windows only sees one primary partition, so you have to use a partition manager to delete the other primary partitions. MiniTool Partition Wizard claims to work in all versions of Windows, I only have 32 bit Vista. Or you could use Linux in a virtual machine such as Vmware, it's free for home use.

I need some help with a SD card with CM7

Hi everyone. I have CM7 running off an 8GB Sandisk microsd card. Something I still cant figure out to do is how to access the remaining space on the card that is not being used by the boot partition. I can access it from the Nook, but if I take it out and try to access it from a PC I only have the boot partition which only gives me about 100mb of free space. When I plug the nook into my pc with the sdcard installed I only have access to the built in storage. Can anyone please tell me how to access the extra space or direct me to a walkthrough on how to do it. I searched but couldnt find it.
Thanks.
You can use easeus partition manager or minitools partition manager.... you need to set partition 4 to active to see it in the computer... but you MUST remember to make partition 1 active again to use it in nook....
The issue is that all 4 partitions are created as primary partitions... Window will only see the first active primary partition.
Thanks a lot. I will check out easeus partition manager. I appreciate your response.
I finally got around to trying what you mentioned, DizzyDen. I got the sd card switched to active, but still when I open it up in windows explorer I can only see the boot partition. In easeus it states that the partition will all the storage is active though. Any suggestions?
That is common and limitation of windows... it will only see the first active partition on a drive... the same as when you were using the 2 GB version.... you can change the active partition in easeus partition managare to partition 4... do what you want... but you HAVE to remember to change it back to partition 1 as active before you take it out and put it back in nook

Some how this really screwed up my computer booting up. I made 100% sure not to check any of my two desktop HDD's and just switched primary and active on the SD card. Easeus asked to reboot computer and then I eventually had to do a restore point to be able to boot windows afterwards...
How about you try this:
[ROM][CM7] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards. with updater
I know this will require you to reinstall CM7 but it Automatically adjusts for any sized card and allows easy updating without CWR or PC.

Seems they already did that... have cm7 running on SD... the problem they stated was not being able to access partition 4 on their computer.... btw... when you change active on SD in easeus don't reboot... you don't have to.

No... What he's talking is that he did something like install a 4gb image on a 8gb card and now he wants to expand the "sdcard"partition to fill the remaining space on the card. I had to do this when I had a Nookie Froyo 2gb image on my 4gb card but it was annoying. The only easy and smooth way to do it was to Boot to my Linux Install (Ubuntu 10.04) on my PC and Run GParted(The best Partition Manager under the Sun) Trying to do it in Windows was just miserable.
In the end I found it much easier to simply use the Method in my above post when I installed CM7 and it's been the best Expirience I've had Installing a Custom ROM. It's also been dirt simple to update CM7 as all I have to do is plug the SD into my PC and Copy the latest CM7 zip onto my boot partition and boot to recovery. It installs everything automatically. You can even do the same thing to install GApps. If I'm away from my PC but want to update I just download the Zip to my Nook and then use a Terminal App to mount Boot to a folder, and then simply copy the Zip over and Reboot into Recovery.
So I recommend just reinstalling CM7 to an SDcard with my above post for a less stressful experience.

I don't think that's the case. He said he was able to see the storage space from his Nook but not when putting the uSD card in his PC. This is the case because Windows is only able to see the first active partition on a drive; using something like Easeus he can temporarily switch the active partition to #4 to view the storage space.
Unless what you mean is increasing the size of the first partition by deleting all the other partitions as well and just having 1 large boot partition so that it's viewable when mounted on PC (or on stock if dual booting). I don't know the viability of that because I'm not sure how CM7 needs to have partitions structured other than that the 1st is always the boot and the 4th = storage. I may be wrong
*edit: Also, if you're trying to access the root level of files during USB storage mode (for, eg., dropping a new boot animation to /data/local) you won't be able to do it, need to use something like Root Explorer or ADB*
I think the OP needs to clarify what his/her problem is because no matter how I read the OP's post I interpret it one way but other people are interpreting it other ways. Until the OP clarifies, I don't think anybody can help since none of us are on the same page.

[Q] Can I Store Files and Boot from the Same microSD Card?

Hi,
I just got myself a Nook Color with version 1.2 update and I am planning to root the device from a microSD Card with CM7 or Honeycomb. But before I start, I have two basic queries:
1. Which rooting will give a better and stable web browsing experience - CM7 (Gingerbread) or Honeycomb
2. Can I store and view my personal files (e.g, movies) from the microSD Card which will boot my Nook Color with CM7/Honeycomb? I am very concerned about this, as the Nook Color v1.2 comes with only 1 GB of free space for personal files storage and so I need to store my movies in mircoSD card. At the same time, I don't want to change the stock software thus violating warranty, so I have to root using a microSD card.
I am very new to this, so will appreciate your response very much. Thanks in advance.

1. Without a doubt cm7. Honeycomb will unfortunately be forever buggy.
2. Yes you can use the left over storage on your SD card for files, music, videos, app etc.
And FYI you can root the internal memory and if you need to return for warranty then you can just return to stock and b&n will not know a thing but if you are going to run off the SD card make sure that it is a sandisk.

The thing to remember if you want to access the 4th partitiion for storage is that you have to do it while the SD is in the NC. Win xp will only see the first partition which has only about 155 megs.
Thanks a ton! I have few more quick questions.
1. What is the most stable CM7 version for rooting 1.2 version Nook Color as of today?
2. Will the rooted nook be able to play AVI video files? What app I need to download for that?
3. I found that PDF page load is very slow in my Nook Color. What app do you suggest for a good reading experience?
Once again, thanks in anticipation.
1. 7.0.3 is the latest stable version of CM7, however, most people keeps up-to-day with nightly builds.
2. it should, if not, install Rock Player Lite, it plays virtually everthing
3. Either Adobe Reader or Alkido would do the job
Not able to copy files to uSD card which boots CM7
Hey thanks for your all your support. I was able to install CM7.0.3 on my 1 GB uSD card and also installed Adobe Reader and Moboplayer. Everything works fine, except when I connect my NC to my PC, and then turn on USB Mass Storage on NC, I can only explore my Nook Color (showing as F: drive) to copy files. I cannot open/explore my SD card, though the PC shows the uSD card as "Removable Disk (E. When I try open this E: drive, I get the message "Please insert a disk in E: drive".
Also, my NC does not seem to identify the SD card. When I go to Settings -> Storage, it shows total space unavailable under SD card. Even when I open Moboplayer, I get the message "There is no SD card, make sure it is usable". I could only play videos copied to my NC internal memory.
I was told that I can use the leftover space of the uSD card to copy personal files, but I have no success on that front yet :-(. Any idea/suggestions how to fix this issue?
More information:
In my NC Storage Settings, it shows:
1. SD card: Total space unavailable, Available space unavailable.
2. Internal storage: Total space 525 MB, Available space 449 MB
3. Additional storage (emmc): Total space 1 GB, Available space 63.51 MB
Wondering what is 2nd one (Internal storage)? Is that the data partition of my SD card? If yes, how can I copy personal files there?
Did you say you are using a 1GB uSD? IMO, that's way too small for what you want to do. I would recommend either a 4 or 8GB sandisk card to allow you enough space for files and the OS. Remember that this is also your boot disk and the cm7 files are taking up most of the available space on a 1GB card. Just sayin......

I have ordered for a 16 GB class 4 SanDisk uSD card. I had a 1 GB uSD card at hand, so wanted to test with that first before I receive the 16 GB card. And as I said, I had no prob at all installing CM7.0.3 on the 1 GB card and if I am not wrong the card still has hunderds of MB memory free. My question is why can't I explore the SD card when I connect my NC to PC thru' the USB cable?

I don't recall the specific partition sizing of SASD but I would suspect there is no space available on the uSD after SASD creates the first 3 partitions... thus no partition 4 to be mounted as /sdcard.
Ok, thanks. As a mentioned in couple of posts back, any idea what is the "Internal Storage" of 525 MB total space that shows up in my storage settings? It is different from the emmc storage, because that shows up as the third storage option with 1 GB total space.
Ok - just found this thread and had to ask:
I'm running a stock 1.3 on the eMMC, and CM7.1 on a 16G micro-SD.
When I boot into the stock ROM, I see that my SD is mounted, but that the stock ROM mounted the /boot partition, rather than the /SD Card partition.
Is there a way to set the stock rom to boot /SD Card, or hide the other three from it?
Thanks!

To my knowledge, no, you cannot make the stock OS see any but the boot partition of the SD card. Both stock and your CM7 card can access eMMC storage, but stock can only see the first partition of your card. If you want a stock and a CM7 installation to share one /sdcard partition, you will have to set up a dual boot on internal storage (mine is linked in my sig).
If you just want to have some SD storage available to your stock install, you might be able to stretch the card's /boot partition and store some files in there, but I don't know if your SD install would remain stable. You could always back up your card as a disk image and try it out.

I would also like to know the answer for how to make the /boot partition larger on various images to allow sufficient room when booted from eMMC. I tried doing this with EASEUS Partition Master but it will not let me resize the boot partition. Any other options to solve the issue? The only other options is to swap cards when you know you are booting off eMMC and that is a pain.

Sorry, I guess that I could have been more clear in what I am trying to do. I have a rooted nook color 1.1. I burned the image for the dualboot phiremod/Honeycomb that is approximately 3.5 Gb. I burned it to an 8 Gb card and then expanded the 7th (/sdcard) partition to use the space which is available when booted to phiremod. When I boot (with the card installed) to eMMC via J4mm3r's u-boot menu, my rooted 1.1 comes up but sees the /boot partition as the SD card. Since it is the /boot partition, it only has 80 Mb free which is not enough for Titanium Backup, etc. If I could make the /boot partition larger (say 2 Gb) then everything would work as desired.
1. I don't use dual boot option so can't help you
2. I don't use either Phiremod nor Honeycomb so can't help you but
a. I think the NC should still the left-over of the uSD card. if not
b. Try using MiniTool Partition wizard to expand the boot partition and see what happens. Not so sure if it allowed to do so.

Mmm, I think you maybe just need to make up your mind, or deal with the limitations--have your cake or eat it, because you can't do both. That said, I see no reason EASEUS wouldn't let you expand the boot partition, unless there's just no unallocated space, in which case you need to shrink your storage partition first. I don't know whether your card would boot properly with an expanded boot and random files in there, but you should be able to move the partitions around just fine.
Still, your better bet is to decide what's going to be your primary OS and stick with it. You can even dual-boot from eMMC and have two full OSes, but as long as you're using the SD as a boot drive, you're going to be trading off its ability to serve as storage for your interal OS.
Edit: sorry, didn't realize how old the thread was...was trying to find my info with the forum search. ^^;
In the original post the user asked if you could use the microSD for both booting/rooting and for storage -- when I tried this, I got a "SD Card must be formatted" error in my rooted Nook. I let it rty to format the card (then let Windows format it) and -then- I was able to store on the SD card.
But when I rebooted my Nook Color, it got stuck Infinite-looping the Nook Color splash screen. =\
I'm about to root it again, and I'd like to use the same SD card I use to root to have some storage space on it. I (had) a 4GB microSD card, but because the slot is in the worst place it could possibly be on the device...I've already managed to get it wedged inside the casing. =\ The drive still works but I'd rather not have to worry abotu swapping cards in and out and in and out; maybe I have fatter fingers than It hink, but that SD card slot is a pain in my arse.
What did I do wrong my first go 'round? I had a 4GB card, so I used the 4GB CWM image for it. Is it...really simple, and I need to format it into two partitions in windows; set 1GB aside for the CWM boot disc and the other 3GB would be available for file storage?
1. use SD formatter
2. if you used a 4GB CWM image, did you manually update it to the latest build? If not, just grab the 1GB image in the quote at the top of this thread: updated CWM. If you're planning to wipe it right after, it doesn't matter how big it is.
Also, regarding the OP and my response, I later found this link I'd saved about pointing stock to the storage partition of a CM7 SASD card: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13668471&postcount=529
I haven't tried it or seen anyone report back after trying it, but there it is if anyone wants to give it a go.
