I have a similar question and thought I'd ask here instead of contributing to the clutter by starting a meaningless new topic.
So here goes - I'm looking for a cheap car, and a guy said he could sell me one for $750. Should I get it? I'll probably only use it for driving around town and some light racing down the street. Also, I'm not sure if it is a Ferrari. Does anyone know how to tell the difference? Thanks.

real sweetheart with the sarcasm there
nook color's a nice and easy cheap tablet for light web browsing, reading ebooks and playing games. Look at pictures via Google to know if what your getting is a nook color; pretty obvious.
Make sure it's a NC and not the normal Nook. If it's really the NC, $75 is amazing.

If it's an actual working Nook Color for $75, I'd say thats a deal to jump on as soon as you can, I know I would. Just as said above, make sure it's working, and make sure it's an actual Nook Color because that sounds like it's towards the low end of what the regular nook is going for used.
"towards the low end"?! $75 is a LOT cheaper than I've seen reliably working Nook Colors offered for. I'm with those who suspect that the item for sale is the Nook ereader, not the Nook Color. It's easy to distinguish a Nook from a Nook Color, as others have suggested. Unless I could put this item through some rigorous testing I'd be very wary of buying an item that's currently offered through retail channels for 2/3 off list price.

thanks guys. the guy said the text area is black and white, but the book selection area is color, so im assuming its a nook color? and he said theres a small cosmetic crack, but i plan to test when we meet anyway.

That's not a Nook Color, that's a regular Nook. The Nook Color is 100% color LCD and there is no separate book selection area.

I bought the Nook Color for my wife, she likes to read on it, and I get to tweak it and play with it as a tablet. Lately I used it more than her of course. And she doesn't mind what i do to it as long as she can still read her books.

Good article. I think we (rooters) are a big part of the success, not just because we buy them but we make the sales numbers look good enough to continue the push. It is also such an elegant looking device that the more people see them, the more they sell. I see a lot of them on the commuter train I take to work every morning. I would say I see more of them than iPad (I still see more original nooks, kindles, and Sony ereaders than anything). iPad sales are boosted by people that buy them because they are cool and want to use them at home. They are really too big and heavy to use comfortably on the train in my opinion and I am a 250 lb guy.
I wasn't aware of the problems Apple is having with magazine publishers. I am not a big magazine reader but I get Men's Health and it looks great on the Nook (both in the app on CM7 and the stock - I dual boot). There is no way that I would buy each edition at $4-$5. $2 a month for a subscription is a much more attractive price for me.

Very ineteresting. I never realized magazines on the Nook Color were basically just PDF files.
Hopefully, publishers will eventually tweak their magazines so they fit the Nook Color's screen dimensions better "out of the box." I don't mind pinching and Zooming, and it's nice that the magazine is identical to the newstand copy, but it would be cool if the articles fit the screen better from the get-go without the need to pinch and zoom.

Ewwww I'm playing with a "girls toy" *chucks nook out the window*
JK I just have to put some stickers of hot naked chicks on the back and it will be ok.
I'm probably going to buy a NC soon (first tablet) but reading the NY Times article they say that B&N is expected to debut a new e-reader this week.
Does anyone have any detail about this? maybe they'll drop the price of the current NC ($250), does someone know of a better deal? TIA

No one knows for sure but speculation is it will be an update or an additional option the the original eInk Nook, not the Color. The Nook Color (NC) was only introduced last November as the NYT article states. With the latest upgrade and addition of apps, many think it is too soon to replace it.
The original Nook is about 1 year old which, in technology these days, means it's old.
Beyond that I haven't paid too much attention to what the actual details of the announcement might be. I'm not interested in another Nook. I'm happy with my NC.
Just curious to see how many people would "trade-up" to the newer model *if* (very small chance I know) B&N announces tomorrow that they're releasing a faster and more full featured tablet/reader.
I'm of two minds about it, if it ends up being a new NC (which I doubt myself) that is better than the current NC, it'll probably cost $50-100 more, in which case why not just get one of the dedicated tablets out on the market? (Or wait for Amazon's quad core Hollywood tablet..)
What do you think?
I would wait for Hollywood, hell even Coyote. I don't really have money to just throw around myself, so even if they did release a newer Nook Color, I doubt it would be a big enough difference in performance or features to make me go buy it tomorrow.
In fact, with the possibility of Hollywood being only $450 at launch and from amazon (who you know is going to go out of their way to make sure they have plenty in stock) I may not even trade up to the Iconia or Transformer this fall like I had wanted to.
Which kind of sucks since the wife wants a Nook color now. (Was going to give her mine...)
Supposedly (PCMag article) Amazon "might" be pricing the 7-inch Coyote tablet a $349 and the 9.7-inch Hollywood tablet at $449 (assuming lowest storage price). If Amazon throws in free 3G for apps downloads I'm sold (doubt it though since their cloud computing mp3/streaming video would end up costing them a pretty penny with free 3G).

The engadget article states 2 months on a charge.
here is the article about the new nook:
***.engadget.com/2011/05/24/barnes-and-noble-announces-new-nook/
Doesn't sound like it has a lot to recommend it compared to nc, but we can still spend a few days speculating if it will boot from SD card... perhaps there are some applications where a "paperback" android device would be useful, especially if the disaffected sell them lightly used in the $100 range.
Press release says nook color now $169 list. Time for a second one to play with!

EDIT: Went to the blog of the news conference and the reporter was wrong. NC is not lowered in list price! It is the 3g version of the old original nook that is $169. Bummer.

Correction, the original nook 3g is now 169. nook color is unchanged.
Touch screen e-ink? 80% less flashing (supposedly)? sd card? I'm sold. I wonder how long it takes to get it hacked and someone throw as a browser on there. e-ink touchscreen browser, even if just black and white, aounds very intriguing to me. Especially if it's better than the kindle's experimental browser.
this also assumes bn didn't take the hint from the first nc and locks the thing down like a bunker. Not to say there are some great devs out there but it would severley limit progress. This comming from a droid 2. Locked bootloaders =
I'd stay where i'm at right now. Working on saving money for a true tablet, but i like my NC as it is with HC now.
Why trade up? The Nook Color does everything I need it to do... IN COLOR. Running CM7 or phiremod is the icing on the cake...

Are you guys wrongly comparing Brand-new NC vs. Refurbished NC?
Amazon tablet has nothing to do with those price-dropping NOOKC.
If the brand-new NC is dropping price then it's legitimate to say because of the impact of the Amazon tablet, this is not, this is refurbished, people.

I have 2 that do not look at all to be anything but new. I suspect that B&N is flooding the market and you may get new or refurb. Have you ever seen any tech gizmo that was this popular and had this many refurbs floating around? Unless you have some solid inside info from either Amazon or B&N I take your advice as simply an opinion.

the nook color price hasnt dropped, its been $249 for a while now
the nook color refurbished price has dropped, from $225 to $169.
the reason for the glut of refurbs? no idea/opinion.
is B&N reselling refurbished NC's for cheaper and cheaper, an attempt at saturating the channel before amazon releases their tablet(s)? perhaps.
i got mine about a month or two ago for $189 from b&n through ebay; so could read books, comics, study, and do light surfing (reading the tech news). i only got it b/c i could root it, which i did via microSD card and run android/CM7. my wife has been "borrowing" it during the day to read books while at work (she is a nanny). she also will be "borrowing" it to read books when she stays home with our first child, in the fall. she finds being able to read a book with one hand and turn the page with a finger MUCH easier, especially when holding a baby. she loves the quality of the screen and is getting used to the touch screen interface.
will any other tablet de-throne the NC for the sub $200-250 tablet market segment - only time will tell. competition is a good thing for all consumers. i look forward to new tablets, but i will probably stick with my $250 investment (NC, 16gb microSD card, silicon cover, screen protector, neoprene bag) for at least 1-2 years unless anyone comes out with a tablet that is as fast as my workstation/desktop for surfing for approx. $250, which will probably happen in 1-2 years at the rate we are currently moving. that, or the battery fails to maintain a charge after doing 50% drain every day. The question is, will tablets hit the metaphorical wall, as we did with computers and the current 3-4ghz processor "cap"? only time will tell.
Hi guys. Missed the Barnes and Nobel deal so now I am looking around for the best deals, so I thought I would stop here and ask. I need one for my daughter for Christmas. Either a color nook or nook tablet. Looking to root it as well through the sd card because I want to keep the stock B&N software for my daughter to buy and read books. Any input is welcome as to where I can get either one for a great deal and which one to get. Thanks!
I bought 2 refurbished for the kids for $119 each from here last week. It changed to $129 now. I don't know if the price fluctuates or not.

It appears to be B&N's own ebay site.
Item location: B&N Warehouse, United States
I can't be sure what the warranty is but it should be 1 year like the one from their site.
Yes, that auction ended, then went from $129 to $149 and that ended and I cant find another auction listed under the Barnes and Nobel store anymore.......
For the price comparison between the two, I am wondering if I would be better to go with the tablet? I am sure that it will be rooted very soon! looking for input!

B&N's own site still has the $149 refurb deal here. Not as good as $119, but at least its still available
So what would you guys get? If they get past the bootloader problem, which I am sure they will, the only other advantage to the tablet besides the speed is the built in "mic" which later on could be used to talk while using the keyboard similar to the way a cell phone works? Just trying to weigh my options!
Honestly, I would go ahead and get the nook color (not tablet). And think about putting a rom on the emmc (internal drive). That way she can read books from Barnes and Noble on the nook app, as well as books on the kindle app, Sony reader app and Google books. I also check out books from my local library.
I guess you can also do this running the rom from the SD card, but having done it both ways myself, I would go for putting the rom on the nook itself. Rom runs much better.
Apps are much cheaper from the Google market than from the B&N market.
I don't know how much function a mic will give, but I text from my nook using Google voice.
Check out Craigslist as another option. My sister just got a great deal on a nook with leather cover that was barely touched. Still had the box, etc.

While this ain't exactly Nook Color related, if you aim for a cheap tablet and don't care about the 1024x600 Resolution the Nooks have...
Go for a Aino Novo 7, it's 100$ and overall might be the better choice for your daughter as it packs a whole bunch more than the Nook.
Its biggest downside being tough to find protective covers and the 800x480 resolution.
I have purchased two refurbished Nook Colors from B&N's Ebay site and they have both been perfect. Now my son wants one. There are some other sellers on Ebay selling refurb units. Are these the same as getting them from B&N? Has anyone had problems with any of the refurb units? A seller with the name NextWorth has them right now for $99.
I picked up a 3rd party refurb of the Nook Tablet without any issues. Just make sure you read the posting carefully to see exactly what they are selling you. Also make sure they have a good return policy and you should be ok.

I couldn't look at the listing from NextWorth at work. Now that I have seen it, I see that this is seller refurbished. I think I definitely would prefer to get something that is manufacturer refurbished. There are some listings for $126 on Ebay, or I could get one at the local Microcenter for $135 if my son can't wait.
I just saw the post yesterday about the Nook Tablets for $149 and was going to go that route but they are no longer available. Again, it just depends on if he wants to wait longer to see if they become available again. We are going on a trip next month and he wants to have it by then.
I just bought 8 Nook Colors from Cowboom (all 7s) for $99.99 each and put CM7 RC2 on them, but they were for coworkers of my Wife and I. The $149 Tablet deal is where it is at, but these people wanted an Android tablet with an 8gb Micro SDHC and a TPU case for around $120.
Wow, 8 Nook Colors! You must really be spreading the word. I'm assuming you didn't have any problems with any of the ones you got from Cowboom. I had never heard of Cowboom before, it looks like an interesting site and appears to be somehow affiliated with Best Buy. I didn't know what you meant by the all 7's comment, but that appears to be a rating number on their site. Looks like the higher the number the better. I only saw 1 8, but it didn't come with a charger or cable to that would be a deal killer. I might see if my son wants to go this route if no other sales pop up this weekend. The tablet for $149 would be sweet but I am not holding my breath on that one showing up again soon. What are the TPU cases you mentioned? I would love to find a decent case with a multi position stand that does not cover up the speaker. I'm currently just using one of those rubber things that slips on it.

They are $99 again for the "returned" Nook Color on Cowboom
All 8 were fine. I put Mr.g666's CM7 RC2 on all of them, used the free LCD Resolution app to set the DPI to 220, overclocked to 1200mhz, and have had no complaints. So far I have probably put Android on 15+ of these. Everyone my Wife or I have shown it to wants one once they see it. I would look for a condition 7 with the charger. Some came in the original box, some didn't. You get 30 days from Cowboom but I think if you had a problem with it and asked real nice B&N would replace or repair it for you within a year of registering because they rely on you buying books and games (my opinion).
Office Depot has nook tablets for 199 with a 50 dollar visa gift card on sunday.
Picked up the tablet today and the Visa gift card is given in the store. Did not have to mail anything in to get it, but you do have to pay $4.95 to activate the stupid thing. Running CM7 from microSD and it seems to be working pretty well. If I reboot it, it boots into Nook mode. If I shut down, then power on, it boots from the microSD.

I haven't tried anything else besides the CM7 off of uSD. This is my Son's tablet so I'm not playing around with it too much. I still haven't had the confidence to flash CM7 to my Nook Color's eMMC, plus it seems to run perfectly off of the uSD card so I've seen no reason to. As far as the tablet and CM9, I thought I read that hardware acceleration is not working on it yet so not really interested in trying that until development gets further along.

I was talking about both. I have 2 Nook Color's, and my son has the 8GB tablet. All of them are running CM7 off of the uSD cards and have stock firmware on the emmc.
