operable program or batch file.

You need to install android-sdk for adb or at least have adb.exe (and some .dll),open a command prompt from that folder and run adb shell, i'm on tab so i do not have anything here to attach but a search willvhelp ya.Also go to xda chef central forum and give a look to dsxda android kitchen if you wanna make your own rom ;-)

SETTING UP ADB FOR WINDOWS USERS
The example shown in the video tutorial is running Windows 7. XP, Vista should run the same way.
1) Download the SDK program for your OS Here..
2) Download the latest Java Platform if you don’t have an updated version.
3) The SDK program will download in a .zip file. Extract that file somewhere easily accessible [like your desktop!]
4) You should now have a folder on your desktop with a name: android-sdk-windows
5) Drag that folder into the root of your HD…
The pathway should be something like: Computer > Local Disk ( C: ) > android-sdk-windows
6) make SURE to install the USB driver package in SDK... this way your device will be recognized when running adb commands later on...
Now that you have placed the SDK program there you can run ADB commands. But you need to run them Manually. Most people go into the tools folder and click adb and expect it to work its magic… you can stare all you want, but all it’s going to do it open a command prompt, run commands, and disappear. Now, don’t go “ZOMG I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO! IT WONT WORK!” …. Trust me, it will work..
6) Open a command prompt, go to windows start menu and click “search” or “run…” and in the box type: cmd and then press enter. This will execute the command prompt [terminal]
7) Now connect your Eris via USB. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE USB DEBUGGING ON!! If you don’t, go to settings < applications < development and check the box: usb debugging
8) Don’t mount your SD card yet.
9) Now you are almost ready to execute your first adb command. But first you must re-direct the path in command prompt to be your tools folder in SDK… this is what command should look like before:
C:\Users\YourUserName>
Now type in command: cd
But DON’T press enter… drag and drop the path from your SDK tools into that command line, so it should look like this:
C:\Users\YourUserName> cd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Now press enter. NOW your command prompt should say:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools
Ok, last part… to test adb type in command: adb devices
Now it should return something like:
List of devices attached
HT9ANXXXXX Device
Ok so now you can execute Adb commands. Make sure you always have your command prompt pathway set to SDK tools or it WILL NOT WORK! You can now also execute adb commands directly to your device from it’s shell by typing: adb shell followed by your command.
For Visual people here is my short Youtube video explain it all again... and here is my screen shot to show you what it should look like, pay attention to my command prompt.
Another example: Custom boot animation for NON-ROOT USERS.
1) Find / create a boot animation that works with the Eris
2) name the Zip file bootanimation.zip
3) place .zip file in SDK tools folder
4) Follow above instructions to set path in CMD to tools folder and connect your device
5) execute this command:
adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local
Feel free to PM if you have any questions... I hope this helps
adb
Could someone sticky this please?... and I think themes and apps is a good place for it..unless you think it belongs in general..
Help
I followed your instructions to the "T" everything worked but when I tried to push abd bootanimation command it says access denied is this because I don't have root? I am running on the 2.1 leak Version 2 OTA . Seems to be working fine for me. Although I wish I would have waited for root!! C'mon DEVS I'm pulling for you. Any suggestions?

You probably don't have the .apk file in the same directory as sdk tool folder
try moving it there and see if that works.
Okay. After looking around, I couldn't find much but here's my dilemma. I got a new laptop and wanted to start Modding my phone like how I can with my desktop and my older laptop. For me to get into ADB shell all I did was copy ADB and adbwinapi.dll to C:\windows\system32. I did the same for my new laptop, but when I launch ADB shell I get an error saying that I a missing the adbwinapi.dll file. Is there a solution for me to get my new laptop to Modding my phone? :3
Please and thank you!

Make sure C:\Windows\System32 is in your path.
Does this involve going into control panel, system, advanced settings, and environment variables?
(If you were talking about the command line in dos, then I still get the "missing AdbWinApi.dll" message.)
ok, so i wrote a program in C# that will open a process CMD.exe and send adb Commands from a Working directory i setup previously that includes Adb and all the other goodies i need for automating the process of rooting and such.
here's my issue, the program will work perfectly in Win 7, but when i run in XP,
i run ADB shell reboot. the phone will reboot. but never reconnect until i end the my program process. ive tried adb kill-server. tried closing the process within my program. i do notice in XP adb will open two adb.exe processes. even when running outside of my program in the command prompt.
i am using a backgroundworker thread to send the commands.
any help is appreciated.
let me know if you want me to post some code. though i don't think its the programming.
Don't think its the programming either. XP has all sorts of weird bugs and why I jumped ship immediately when 7 came out and have been quite happy since. Don't know much about programming but I've read alot of issues with XP and adb. Stick with 7 if you can.
ok, so still haven't found out why adb doesn't like Win XP. the way i got around it was to drop C# for the ADB commands. i made a batch script to run my adb commands. and a C# console app to send the Serial Modem Commands(for PRL and NV item writing) that i call in my Batch file.
but if anyone has any tips to try ill for sure try them.
more detailed description.
i create a new thread that will create a Process of cmd.exe then do a process.StandardInput("ADB Commands");
the current running thread will finish before the next can be started so no prob with multiple threads running.
all my adb commands ie. adb push recovery.img /wherever/recovery.img
work just fine and does what its 'spose to.
until i get to adb shell reboot.
the phone will reboot but the adb driver is never reconnected after the reboot. like it normally would when running the command from the terminal.
i will have to close my C# program before it will connect and recognize the driver again.
again all this works just fine in Win 7.
i also tried to do a "Scan new Hardware" in device manager after reboot and both programs will just go unresponsive at that point.
next, i will attempt to make my own ADB in C#. if im not mistaken adb uses a TCP connection to communicate with the device. default port 5037 me thinks.
@TronofTroy
Hey do you mind sharing a couple of commands with me in C# on how to write the prl n nv items please.
Also I have been trying to send commands from a windows based form in C# but I can figure out how to do it properly.
Thank You very much!
I just use batch scripts and run them.

It's Android Debug Bridge. Basically, it's a command line interface from your PC to your phone. Think of a terminal emulator that you run on the phone itself. ADB is pretty much the same, but from a PC. It is part of Android SDK. You can also find it included in many installation packages posted here on XDA, e.g. CWM recovery. There is an executable and a couple of DLLs.
P.S.: TrymHansen beat me to it...

Sorry, but i know what it is now, how do i run it though? im trying to follow the htc desire hd guide to root my phone, which everything is done up until the point i have to test that i have root in debug mode. Not sure how to do this? run abd.exe? it just showed me a cmd window which runs and then dissapears.
If you got your phone rooted or want to test it run adb.exe shell the type su and hit enter. If the prompt change from $ to # you have root access

What is likely to be the problem if it says SU permission denied?
If you are on stock, that means that you have no root access. If you have cm10 or cm10.1 you have to enable adb root access somewhere in the settings. I am sorry but I can not tell you at the moment where to enable it because I am on stock right now.

Thanks Bro for this information
I'm having a crapload of trouble with adb and fastboot. I've been searching for the last few hours but to no avail. I've downloaded multiple drivers and tried to do everything i can to setup the adb and fastboot. I managed to get the bootloader unlocked and its rooted and usb debugging is enabled. Every time i type "adb devices" into a command prompt it says that adb is not a valid command etc. What the heck am i doing wrong and why is this supposedly simple process so difficult here?? Please help...
Did you use the "cd" command to change the directory to where the platform-tools folder is?
That's assuming you have the Android SDK and Java Dev Kit (JDK) installed already..

2 Questions
Does that install the tools in the Windows equivalent of "$PATH" so users don't have to cd to the tools' location.
And do you mind if I link to this in my how-to guide? Credit will be given to you and your team of course.

Yep. U can do it I'm happy to share this tools with other users :good:
About the location, I set the installation path to C:\Windows so it means that it can be used as an windows services whenever u call it on cmd. No needs to set the location.
For example: If users use command "adb devices", it will work immediately and show the result. However when they want to decompile an apk and put file in a folder named "X", it's needed to use cd command to set the location in cmd to "X" then use adb/apktool/fastboot as normal without having adb/apktool/fastboot files in "X" folder. It helps to define the location of apk file, not the apktool/adb/fastboot.
Hope u can understand my idea =.= Sometimes, my explanation is really not good becoz English is not my mother language

Thanks.
That's what I thought it did. I was going to do something similar, but I couldn't remember if the correct folder was and I was just too lazy to do the research and find out. I was thinking System32, but its been so long that I couldn't remember.
