[Q] blue artefacts / subpixels all over the screen - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!
I bought my galaxy 6 months ago. Not long after I noticed a minor issue with my AMOLED display. I could see blue "artefacts" in some bright areas of the screen from time to time. Nothing serious, just blue dots and stripes, subpixels. I even posted a picture of it on reddit (second attachment) more out of curiosity than anything but was later convinced it was probably a software issue. I did have some suspicions something might be wrong with my phone but it actually happened so rarely and the issue was so minor that I just got used to it because it didn't bother me that much.
I recently flashed dark core 2.2 along with rc6 and it got *significantly* worse. I could see blue subpixels all over the screen wherever there's bright white, generally on the lowest brightness setting. Now, I believed that the hardware got worse and it's time to ask for a replacement. So before doing so I obviously had to flash stock firmware and guess what - it all disappeared. So I flashed just the dark core again to go back to rc6 - and it was back again.
The thing is, I really love this ROM and I love the voodoo improvements that come with it. I don't think I can live without them any more. On the other hand, it might be difficult to convince people from samsung that there's actually something wrong with my phone - since it happens so rarely on stock ROM. And I think that this display defect is intensified by the screen improvements from voodoo/dark core.
My only idea is to somehow make it show up on stock ROM and send it to them just then. But is this even possible without rooting my phone? Does anyone has an idea why would these blue subpixels show up in white areas? Is it something they check with specialized equipment or do they boot the phone first to see what's wrong?
Anyway, guys if you could point me in the right direction or had any better ideas... Seriously, It would be helpful even if you said that I should just return my phone and hope for the best. I'm a student and I can't really afford to be charged for returning - what they think is - an operational phone
I attached two pictures
1. a picture of how my screen behaves after flashing the latest dark kernel
2. a picture of how my screen sometimes behave on stock kernels
I'd appreciate any help or advice

Super Amoled Screen?

Hey guys quick question
Me and my girlfriend both have the SGS but I noticed today that he screen has a weird yellow colour when compared to mine.
Like my blacks are black, where hers just seem off from mine even at low, medium and full brightness, power saving lcd thing off on both.
We are both running JPU.
Is her screen dying or is it faulty? if so should i contact samsung for a replacement model?
Thanks
Hi
I have an issue where my screen is much darker than those of friends of mine, both with brightness set to full on all phones or with auto brightness on. I didn't notice it at first but now that I did it bugs me like hell. Maybe its related.
Depending on country and service center it shouldn't be too much of an issue to get a replacement screen / device. It goes without saying you have to roll back from JPU to the original froyo for device.

Running any custom kernel with colour fixes etc? I think some roms/kernels tweaked the settings
I think its possibly some variance in the manufacturing process. Mine has a blueish tint which i find quite annoying, but only appears when looking at it from the left hand side
Thanks for the responses guys, we are both running stock JPU roms but ive contacted samsung and they said they will have a look at it :/

[Q] Random Dimming and Heavy Greenish Tint Issues?

Hello all. So I LOVE my Samsung Focus S that I purchased shortly after Thanksgiving Day...all except for one problem. My phone seems to dim permanently out of no where and nothing I do will correct it back to it's normal brightness except for restarting the phone. Automatic Brightness is off and the "Auto Display Intensity" in the Extra Settings category is off. Now I don't know if this is something that specific to Windows Phone or Samsung Focus S particularly? I'm going to take a guess and say it's on the Samsung Focus S that exhibits this behavior. I also can't figure out if it's a hardware failure or a software failure. I'm beginning to think it's a specific update that is used to update your "Extra Settings". I don't know at this point. I just want to know if others have this problem.
The 2nd issue is not so much a problem now but a concern. My first Focus S had a VERY HEAVY greenish tint to it that was immediately noticeable at the lightest of viewing angles. To give you an example of how bad it was, my buddy was looking at a picture of oranges he took with his iPhone4, I thought they were lemons from the side. I went to an ATT store near me and noticed the Galaxy S II exhibited this behavior as well but the Focus S on display did not. I quickly concluded it was a defective screen as it was REALLY noticeable. My buddy gave me a call and told me he was at an ATT store across town and noticed it on another Galaxy S II as well. I made the employee take out two brand new Focus S' and chose the best looking one. They both looked identical, although the one on display had an edge over all of them. Thing is, ALL of the ones I've seen have a very slight green/blue tint to them. Is this normal with Super AMOLED Plus? Is this the Gorilla Glass Coating? I love the colors and contrast on this phone but to be honest the brightness and viewing angle leave something to be desired, more-so the viewing angle. Sorry for the long post!
I just looked at some pictures of oranges to test this. They look nice and orange do me. at an angle the entire screen starts to lose its pop. But I would not call it green more so just dimmer. Can't complain with the blacks...if only more sites background was black lol.

Would you mind doing me a favor and looking at different viewing angles on a predominantly white screen? Every phone loses it's composure a bit as the viewing angle is more and more off but I've never seen them turn a different hue. Dim a bit like you said? Yes. I looked online to see if anyone else notices this bluish/greenish tint and many do but more notice it on the AMOLED screen though a few did complain about the Super AMOLED Plus. Thank you!
interresting
Ive been running the focus s since it came out and never noticed this "tint" issue...till today. a simple image of pure white, when viewed from above is fine, but as you change the view angle so does the white begin fade into the bluish haze.
now youre all probably going to hate me but i have a titan too. when i pull the exact same image, it does not fade into blue haze. my suspicion is one of two thoughts: a) the super amoled screen samsung uses has this side effect. b) the glass samsung uses creates this effect.
personally its not a deal breaker for me as i really enjoy the clarity of images and color the samgsung has to offer. that said, the titans inability to go true black are more noticable than a slightly bluish white. but thats purely personal prefence.
FWIW, ive tested red, green, and blue matching images. the only difference i see between the two is a decreased viewing angle on the thc in all aspects. screen display differences is the likely cause.
I can see the blue/green from those angles on white screens
kinda ugly actually
still a few days left to return and get the titan....

It's good to see you have a Titan. The Titan is a pretty nice phone. Viewing angles seem quite good and the whites are SUPER bright. It's just the colors and blacks that suffer. Nice to know you can compare them though.

Hey Alright, I'm not crazy. Heh. I'm going to run to a couple of more ATT stores and see what their display units look like. My buddy just got a GSII and he says he doesn't see it, so I'm going to investigate it as well.
BTW, I spoke to someone at Samsung online and he seemed to think it was "normal" and was caused by a Super AMOLED Plus characteristic. Unfortunately I didn't believe a lick he was telling me.
I'm off to find the perfect display! Wish me luck.
i went back to the store
they want to charge me $35 to restock what I have ^^ - and cant seemed to be talked out of it....
the display Focus S had the same exact issues
as does the GSII/SkyRocket from what I could tell
the Titan's whites make the Focus S whites looks blue - but the Focus S blacks look the Titans blacks look grey
and the color palettes are so radically different - for themes the green on the Titan looks like the lime on the Focus S, and the Titan has nothing that can compare to the green on the Focus S - its ridiculous the difference in the saturation and vividness - I can see what people say about the Titan producing more realistic images - but at the end of the day for most things the Focus S is just better looking, who cares if its accurate?
i imagine using the Titan for a while you would get used to it, but side by side it looks paltry in comparison
to be honest the iPhone display looked pretty good! - just too damned small after using a 4"+ sized display - I could never use something that small after using what I have
So I went to ABT Electronics today and looked at their Focus S. It's funny, all of these places, including the Apple store choose the most PERFECT displays they can find in their inventory to show to the public, when in reality your results can vary greatly. For example, the Focus S at ABT had a whiter/bluer screen than mine in terms of whites. It wasn't a huge difference but it was noticeable. Now I want a new whiter screen. My screen seemed buttery compared to the one I saw. We'll see how successful I am. I know I may sound picky but if I'm going to keep this phone for the next 2 years, I want it to look the way I want it.
I also checked out others with the same 4.3" Super AMOLED Plus and I didn't really see much of a green tint to them. In fact one looked yellowish directly and turned whitish on the side. Weird.
OLEd is still a newer technology, compared to LCD - guess there are still some kinks to work out
Yeah, a problem with AMOLED is a slight bluish hint but I don't believe the screen is a PenTile one.
The dimming has been a bit aggressive, I just usually cover the proximity sensor with my hand and let it work again.
Has anyone noticed a flicker (then on) when you unlock the Focus S screen? Sometimes the screen instantly brings up the lock screen sometimes a second after the flicker.
Alright guys. Back to one of the original topics of the Focus S randomly dimming? I think I figured it out. My phone is over heating and the phone is dimming to try and cool it down. No error messages of overheating or anything. I noticed it today when I was playing games on my phone while charging. My phone was pretty warm. Now up until this point, my phone had not dimmed randomly for a week or so, but this morning? BOOM. Dimmed on me. So it hit me. Screen Dimming + Warm Phone = Overheating. I put the phone down on the cold floor to cool down for 10 minutes. Turn the screen back on and guess what? Original Brightness is back.
Either I exchange my phone again or return it all together. I'm in a bind because I can't get the HTC Titan for the same price I got the Focus S for (Free with No Activation).

I have not noticed this at all.
i am in the same boat
almost potentially worthwhile holding out for a Nokia set (perhaps the 900/850)
i actually think I will keep the Focus S to be honest with you
in a year or a year and a half, call up Att and see what they will work for me if I really want to - I have heard lots of success stories about calling them up and getting very discounted phones deals
after revisiting the store - the titan screen looks like **** (IMO except for the whites) compared to the Focus S - and its just too damned big - the Focus S IMO is the perfect size
and all the Android GUI overlays suck ass - so no way I get a droid - and I will certainly not pay $100 for a year old iPhone.
**this fixed mine** random dimming and tinting
Don't throw anything because I just skimmed over the thread before I am responding. I have the Focus S and had that problem. I corrected it by going to "settings>extra settings" and turning off the "Auto Display Intensity" to make it stop adjusting. Unfortunately, that setting defaults to "On" every time the device is restarted. So you have to remember to turn it off. Maybe everybody thought of this, already, and your device does this, anyway, but mine is perfect with this setting off. So, I hope this helps!

I had to use the option in the "Brightness" page under Settings. The option on the Extra Settings page applies only when it is set to a white background.
Hopefully a future update will address this and improve the auto dimming. For now, though, it's set to bright all the time.
U only need to press the power button to let the phone go to sleep, then press power button again and almost immediately the custom brightness u set will be back.

Well the dimming issue hasn't happened to me in quite a while now. I decided to keep the phone. The fact that the display wasn't perfect wasn't enough to make me want to return the phone, especially since I got it for free with no activation fee on a 2 year contract. In the meanwhile, I'm just enjoying it. Funny though, Now that I've got a 4.3" screen, I want MORE. Bring on the 4.7"!

After an Inspire and Focus S, I find the 4.7" display of my Titan too large to easily type in.

I honestly only find it more difficult in landscape mode. Portrait mode is awesome though. I can't stop hitting the "a" button when trying to turn on caps lock. It's really annoying.

Having had 3 Samsung Amoled phones (Galaxy S2, Skyrocket, Focus S) and a SAMOLED (Galaxy Note) I will say that Samsung doesn't display true whites, it's always blueish. As far as the dimming, Go to "Settings" > Exta Settings > Use Auto Display (Turn it off, however; it seems to enable itself after changing the theme from light to dark or vice versa, as well as after a reboot.)

I believe all the phones you had, had a SAMOLED + display no? Also, I checked to see if changing the theme from light to dark turns the Auto Display feature back on and for me it does not. As for my dimming issue, it only seems to happen when the phone is plugged in and the battery is a bit warm.
Overall, I like this phone but I also don't. The display is quite delicious really. I've had it on half brightness for a few days now just to see how it looks to me and today I finally put it back to full brightness and the colors really are gorgeous. It's not perfect but I've learned to look past it I guess. Thank you for the reply.

Sudden colour change for icons etc

I just experienced the oddest thing, which gave me a fright. I was messaging a friend when suddenly the predicted words and message "bubbles" changed from blue to pink. I had just installed the keyboard some hours ago and had been using it without any issues. Thinking that I might have accidentally changed the keyboard setting by tapping too quicly, I tried to change that but could not find any pink theme.
So I got out of messaging, and to my horror saw that all my icons had changed colour too, to fluorescent shades of pink, green and blue, where there should be colour. I believe there was greyscale such as white and black as well, but I reacted so quickly that I hardly saw that. Barely able to think from panic, I rebooted the phone, and all the colours went back to normal! So I quickly wiped my cache and dalvik and did my titanium and nandroid backup.
Could my poor Note be suffering from some kind of screen failure? I've read briefly of screens turning green, but mine did not, only the icons and "accents" got affected. Or could it be a virus that attacked my phone? I'd installed a handful of new apps today and have uninstalled them since the incident. I've run Lookout Mobile and ALYac but they didn't detect any threats. By the way, my battery was down to about 15 or less when that happened, though I've frequently used my phone in such conditions without any issues.
Any thoughts about what might have happened? I feel a bit unsettled and am wondering whether to flash back to stock without root, just in case the phone goes kaput and I can't turn it back on nor flash with Odin.
sounds like a software failure. It is likely just a random glitch, do not worry.
People do believe that all the software products work the same way every time they are run, but that is not so. Data in RAM itself is actually quite fragile (compared to something 'physical') due to the speed and optimisations made. Magnetic fields and cosmic rays will always have a tiny but random effect. When you are processing 3 billion instructions per second (as your phone is at max), that gives you al lot of opportunity for random stuff-ups.
i've also encounter the same thing like you do. i quickly click on the sleep button off and on back and the color back to normal. battery indicator shown me that my device was 51°C. btw my device was non-root and running stock rom LA1 at that moment. so i guess it must have been too hot and triggered the color changes.
Happened to me once though not really sure the steps I followed to make it happen. A reboot fixed it and I didn't bother much with it anymore.
Thanks for all the answers! It's reassuring as misery loves company. Not that I'm miserable anymore, but for a few seconds I was thinking of life without my Note, and it was quite unthinkable!
Anyway, I know there's no perfect device so I'm not too concerned, though a friend who heard my brief account today said it could be a video driver issue, whatever that means!

[Q] Chances of official JB update fixing black clipping?

Hi guys,
So somehow, (and I really have no idea how I even managed to do this) I went three months without noticing the horrendous black clipping on my Int. Note. Last night I was cursing YouTube's streaming and then realised something was up. After a quick look at the test PNG which I quickly discovered I'm unable to see 1, 2 and 3 which makes for a pretty ugly experience when watching darker videos.
So my question is this. Should I root and go ParanoidAndroid to try and alleviate my issue (I assume part of this process will include flashing a new kernel which is where the issue lies?) or is there a chance that Samsung will ship a new kernel with the imminent (we hope) JB update?
I'm no newbie to rooting and totally hacked my HTC Desire to within an inch of it's life (figuratively speaking, I never bricked it) and I'm always tinkering with an Advent Vega for fun. However, I'm a bit worn out by rooting and reading up on all the proper routes, new radios, kernel issues, bugs etc. I'd like a 'quiet' life with the Note where possible!
Do you think I'll 'get away' with rooting this time or is it going to be likely needed to fix this problem?

My opinion:
Samsung correcting the Gamma table on the firmware, so dark colors appear really dark and not light gray or completly black is unlikely. They are following the strategy embraced by other manufacturers and just release a new model with a slightly better CPU and fixes for the bugs of the previous model.
xda-developers community releasing a ROM that is realy usable and fixes this: not likely either. A ROM that has no support for camera, HD recording, FM radio or S-Pen is not going to convince many people to switch.
I recently took my Note to Samsung technical service because the screen looked yellow (another known manufacturing defect), and they replaced the entire screen, but the new one shows the same black clipping problem.
Apps like filter your screen just lower the contrast so the blacks become more gray, but the darkest tone of gray the Note can show is still too bright, leading to anything below RGB (50,50,50) appearing almost the same tone of gray.
I have just moved to a phone by other company and compared it to the Galaxy Note:
Screen is IPS, viewing angle is not so ample as in an AMOLED but at least white appears white, not light brown
The gammatest.png image is displayed correctly, top row of squares going from black to very dark gray.
Brightness on the Note is limited to avoid burning the AMOLED too fast, and even so, I had burn-in on the top of the screen after only 3 months
My new phone has 1 GB RAM, and 980 MB are listed, not 808, and I have 400 used normally, with 580 free. Note had usually 700 MB used
My new phone seems to spend more time on deep sleep, no Samsung apps or services working on the background

[Q] Strange discoloration on my screen

Dear note users,
Recently I encountered the second discoloration of colors on my screen, for example the center of the chrome icon and everything blue turns purple, this problem occurs in the entire os. I have also made a screenshot and after the phone magically restored the colors; it turned the screen off, because I wasn't using the phone and when I turned it back on the colors on the screen were back to normal; and the colors on the screenshot were also normal. So apparently the os sees the colors properly....
So what do you think is this a hardware failure (I am thinking it is), also if it is, does it fall under guarantee? And finally my screen is ok, for most of the time, but sometimes this error does occur. How can I possibly tell the guys of the Samsung service center something is wrong with the screen? I did take a phone with my point to shoot, but they could say it's photoshop or something and the photo is a bit blurry. Since I cannot force the phone into this situation I can't also make new photos....
I am using alliancerom v3 and speedmod k3, I also don't think the error was due to the rom and kernel, because both weren't developed when the previous discoloration occured....

some picture taken from webcam..
Yeah, with me it looks just the same; I suppose the problem is that you can't reproduce this issue. So the Samsung repair center probably won't repair your phone. After your phone went to sleep or you reboot the issue disappeared for me. Is this the same case for you, and have you checked at a repair center of they fix this issue for you?
