XPERIA Screen/Backlight Problems

Hey guys and girls,
I got my brand new X1i on an O2 contract today, ordered through the internet.
However, when switching it on, the first thing that stands out is the screen isn't all black. The upper right hand corner fades to like a dull greeny tinge as if its under pressure or something.
After fiddling around with it, it seems to be the backlight as in bright light, the colours all look fine and black is black. This is also the cause if the backlight is put at it's dullest, but it's most noticable when its at it's brightest.
Is this a issue with all Xperias or just mine?
And is this serious and worth contacting O2 about or will it be okay?

BUMP.
Could anyone tell me simply if this is a common problem, if not, I'll ring O2 now.
A quick reply would be nice

I haven't seen it before and I haven't seen it reported before. If you think it looks out of the ordinary, too much to leave it be, you should indeed phone O2.

Heres the best photos I can snap.
The first two don't really show it well, but the third is the best.
Trust me, when you first switch it on and the Sony Ericsson logo appears, the whole screen is black and that corner fades to that dull green colour. It stands out quite a bit, it's also noticable on the Panels screen.
If you have a dark photo showing, it can affect the colours on that too.
For such a pricey phone, I expect it to be flush black across the screen.

I just got off the phone to O2, they get the phone from a third-party so I am expecting an email from them. The woman on the other end said, most likely they will swap it for a new handset at the door, or take it for repairs....but it will say in the email.

Ah, classic case of backlight bleeding. Send it back and you'll get a new one.

Well, hopefully, before next week is out I shall. Just waiting for that elusive email, they said I should have received it by Monday.

I have it as well, black light bleeding. I dont really mind it much since I rarely notice it.
Ive decided to leave it alone since my X1 is unlocked and it'd be a massive hassle to send it away to SE.
I'm pretty sure its common. Even high end LCD TVs have the problem sometimes.

I had it on my first x1 (which I dropped and got a new through insurance), and I've also got it on my new x1.
However, I barely notice it, so I'm okay with it

I wouldn't mind so much if it was white but its a green colour, thats more annoying.
It's gonna get sorted anyway, most likely, they'll swap it at the door for a new one.

I was looking for information about the SPB mobile shell and found this thread.
I also have this issue with the top right corner of the screen, especially when I switch the phone on (on the black startup screen with "experia" written in white).
After startup, I don't really notice the issue since this area of the screen is almost never black (except when switching panels and sometimes when watching videos, but it's hardly noticeable). I'm now wondering if I should return it or not, I got the phone on tuesday and already had to do a hard reset (and reinstall everything I had just installed before) because I couldn't send or receive text messages! I really hope this won't get any worse...
(My phone is a french version, and my carrier is SFR)

Mine has it too but its really not a big deal. I've only noticed it on bootup.

Yeah, don't mind it on startup - who watches it start up?
But I notice it when using the camera (in the black border) and

yeaa, i got the same problem too. Went over to the sony ericsson centre and they don't have a clue what it was. They said they'll look into it, and thats it. No replacement.

Mine too has the issue. Both upper corners are bleeding greenish. It's obvious when the screen is black, not only on start-up, all the time. For example, look at it when playing a movie trailer with really black scenes, it's there.
It has to do with the pixels, not the back-lighting, from what I understand of TFT functionality.
Remember the dead pixels issue on TFT screens? Well, the dead pixel means the transistor of at least one color out of the 3 (RGB) is dead, either locked closed or locked open (anyway, not being able to modulate the light intensity of the subpixel color), so the color is either missing or present at a fixed value, the overall color of the pixel not being the required one. In this case is an issue of mismatch of transistor parameters.
The GREEN pixels do not close completely to block the light. Being a progressive issue from one area to another, it's clear that the thin film transistors are progressively mismatched by the process errors. This is process error in the TFT technology (I work in microelectronics). The process masks can get errors (not the case here), or the masks are ok but the etching process is not properly adjusted. In my Xperia the bleeding gets progressive towards the corner, having a starting point like a center from where it spreads. That is because the etching involves chemicals and liquid flow to spread and cleanse those chemicals. My opinion is that the flow in the case of this particular TFT screen model is from the bottom to the upper side, where the upper corners are the bleeding areas for the chemicals and the effectiveness of cleansing is lower, combined with surface tension of the liquids. The transistors get progressively mismatched in parameters (beta factor) and since they all get driven with the same signal, they block the light less than the good ones. Nothing to do about it. Theoretically it might be possible to map out those pixels and provide a corrected voltage for the mismatched transistors (correction table in the GPU DAC ROM), but this is like tooth extraction through the ass hole (or replacing the spark plugs through the exhaust pipe). It's simpler to just get the ****ing screen right. Sorry guys, we are out of luck here. It seems the 800x480 3inch TFT's are not yet top quality, or at least the ones used by SE. I'm really frustrated that the manufacturer used a cheaper screen in a 600-800$ product. This is how a company can loose customers and get the image crumpled.

Slight screen flicker?

I have a nook color, I was wondering if anyone notices a very slight screen flicker like a low refresh rate? Most people would not notice. It doesn't bother me much but I wanted to see if its normal. I notice it most on a dark grey background at 50 percent or lower brightness.

Yes! finally someone that notices it! I have been posting this on other forums. I notice it too on dark backgrounds with about 20-40% brightness, Not sure if it can ever be fixed with an update, but it is sometimes annoying, although not highly noticeable.

I have worked with computer enough that I can tell the refresh rate of a crt just by looking at it. If its normal I am not to worried I justed wanted to know if it was defective because ill switch it out before I root it.

I get the same thing, very noticeable when you are changing the brightness setting. I use the lowest brightness to read an eBook, and I can really notice the flicker when I lower the brightness, but I can notice it when I get back to the reading screen.

I see it on darker images...its so subtle I ignore it.

Anyone that has loaded any other apps notice it in those apps? i.e. does it flicker noticably in Angry Birds? or other apps?

I wonder if it being an IPS screen has anything to do with it. It doesnt bother me to much but causes more eye strain than reading from my htc g2. You would think they would make sure an ebook reader doesnt flicker. oh well i can deal with it.

It's not the screen, per se, but the LED's that are lighting it up. From what I've read, LED's can't vary output with respect to voltage (they're not dimmable), so you have to pulse them very fast to change the output. I assume that the lower the "level" the more the LED is off vs. on, hence the flicker.

I'm pretty sensitive to this, but haven't noticed it on my iPad, but apparently it does it as well. I was wondering why the stock lowest brightness levels were so friggin' bright - probably at the threshold of flicker. You can dim more in a browser or ebook app, which is where I see reports of flicker.

While you can dim an LED by limiting the current (either via inline resistors or with constant current drivers), you can only do so to a degree. Below a certain current, they will simply not light even though the current goes through the LED. On high performance LED's this is still at a pretty bright level. So instead you use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and vary the duty cycle to brighten and dim the LED. As the PWM is at a fixed frequency, with more or less of the cycle being lit or unlit, once the unlit portion becomes substantially longer than the Lit part, you can detect the "Flicker" if you are sensitive to it. This is usually particularly noticeable in the "corner of the eye" if you pan you vision across the area and the device gets paned across you field of vision.
This is done on all the new LED tail lights on cars as well and I hate seeing them at night, when they are almost making me nauseous from the flicker.

yea I really wish there was an update to fix this, but i guess it's just the screen, funny how I have never noticed this on any LCD screen I have ever had from computer to TV

three nook colors - my experience with flicker
My first nookColor had screen flicker, also a mind of its own with phantom taps. Nook #2. Did not have noticeable screen flicker but did have a handful of stuck pixels. Took it back and picked up #3. No stuck pixels, but I've got screen flicker on dark colors. Find it strange that nook #2 didn't have te problem with the flicker. I don't like the flicker at all but think it may be timento live with it.

Hello, I am having a similar problem with angry birds. My screen sometimes will flash different colors and today the screen stayed completely red for 2 or 3 seconds while playing the game. But other than that I love the rooted nook color. Maybe the graphics chip is not powerful enough for this game.

Tried to change it out. Would say that Best Buy is much easier to exchange things at than Barnes & Noble. Eventually they switched mine out and the new one had a dead pixel. They then let me open two more in store in the store all had dead pixels, so did their display model. All presented in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Would be covered up by the black menu bar normally, but visible when the black menu bar goes away.
Anyway I kept my flickering nook, and talked to someone at Barnes and Noble tech support on the phone. He told me the dead pixels were new to him, but they knew about screen flicker issues. He said they would be releasing a firmware update to address this and other problems very soon.
Just wanted to note that none of these nook colors were rooted.

Yes, same here, I have that on my Witstech A81 (resistive screen) too, more noticeable when the battery level drops. Never noticed this problem on my iPhones or iPad though...can't be Android related can it?

Thanks. I can see the flicker too on gray screens. I have no other issues though (minus a tiny, tiny bit of give on the bottom bezel). I'll wait and hope it gets fixed in an update. I don't have a lot of time to keep exchanging a good unit.

If it is a known issue and a firmware fix is planed, then I am content with my rooted nook. Thanks for this thread.

I took mine back to B&N today to see if replacing it would fix it. Both store displays didn't have any flicker.
They opened two different nooks and they did the same flickering thing.
So I called Nook technical support. He put me on hold for about 5 minutes. He said he checked about 5 nooks and they all flickered. But he hadn't noticed it before.
So, he will put a ticket into the development team to have it looked at.
So, another confirmation that Nook tech support is aware and looking into it.

My first Nook did not display this behavior. I returned it due to creaking issues, and the replacement did display screen flicker.
I'm hoping it's a firmware issue and not a hardware one!

I just noted (pardon the pun) that there are lines vertical ans horizontal lines when displaying white. This is my second phone. I went back to cpw and changed this one has similar horizontal lines. Its very very very faint, but I can see it. Im not sure why, it is because of the AMOLED screen, how it works?
Very annoyed. what can i do? every phone CPW has cant be faulty?

I've only had mine a day but cant see any lines like you've mentioned... maybe a bad batch they got in? Maybe something to do with the S-pen's digitizer screen, i assume that will have some form of grid to it

AMOLED seems to have weaknesses at low brightness levels.
Some have seen very faint lines .
Also on minimum brightness some reported a faint changing of the hue of the display.
The screen is also very bright (whites) on min brightness.
If you display a greyscale step pattern black is absolute black but
others that should be near black are too bright.

I think its just the AMOLED tech but check the display thread too.
In normal use the screen is amazing,
all technologies seem to have good and weak points if you look for them.

You are not the only one with this problem. I'm on my third galaxy note now... The first one had dead pixels and the right side was darker than the left side. The second one had much more dark horizontal and vertical lines and smudges. The third one at first had very faint lines and smudges, but it is becoming more visible now. There are several threads about this issue on this forum.. My guess is that these problems are pretty widespread (more or less visible on some gnotes) and that there were some bad batches or that the Amoled technology is the problem. Would love to hear the reason to these issues from Samsung.

No lines on mine. White is white and everything shows up excellent.

Depending on the source if I'm watching say the end credits (white words on black screen) they get like a greyish glow around them

If you disable the automatic light control and just snap the backlight up from 0% to anything above, you will not see any grayish things in video on the Note. I don't have this problem, but I've heard that some people have had to do this to solve this issue.
I don't have any bandings or strange lines anywhere on the screen. It looks as good as my Galaxy S II and Galaxy Tab. I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary (considering the limitations of the AMOLED screen).

Check this video, you REALLY have no artifacts?

Lines/spots are due to ****ty quality control, this is just a matter of luck.

I have yet to see ANYTHING with more then 65k colors, even in the browser.
All i see is some VERY clever dithering very hard to see due to the high resolution.
Coming from the HD2, I'm really disappointed, nothing gained in 3 years (well, more pixels, so harder to see the flaws).
I took 3 picture with a green gradient:
1) 1280width, so basicly 1280 levels of green, but 24bit only shows 255.
2) 255width, so basicly 255 levels of green, 24bit.
3) 64 width, so basicly 64 levels of green, 16bit.
They all look the same to me, in browser and in gallery. I see dither in each of them. This tell me the whole screen is 16/18 bit only.
Maybe the PenTile is playing tricks with me...
Or the grainy screen lets me think its dithered...

i am facing a similar problem..whenever i apply some photo having a lot of black in it as my lock screen image..there seems to be some horizontal gray lines in it..but when i look in the gallery the black is pure black (no horizontal gray lines at all)...is there any problem in the software only ? or is it something regarding the screen?

How to prevent amoled burn in?

Every amoled screen I had was burned after some time. Mostly on the status bar. Once it was WhatsApp.
This time I want to prevent or delay it as long as possible. What recommendations do you have?

Never understood how people managed with burn ins. Well, stop watching a static picture with 100% brightness for 5hrs in a row is a good start.

i have owned more than a dozen samsung products with amoled screens, never had burn in on one of them. I always keep the screen very bright because my eyesight isnt that great. the one lg amoled phone i owned had terrible screen burn

The factors involved are: heat (ext), brightness (curr), uneven degradation rate of each color (rgb), persistent elements, and age (of panel). If half a screen is black and the other is blue, at max brightness, the blue subpixels are under the most stress. Their decay rate will overshadow the resting blue lights - plus that of green and red.
5yrs from now you're going to look at an all white image. Half of it will look awful.

Fall asleep once with your phone under your face and you'll have a burn in your amoled screen. Probably many other ways.
This is a common issue that most people don't even notice.
I get how it happens. I'm looking for ways to prevent it.

Setting a screen timeout is helpful

Had every Samsung for years and never had this, so I've no idea.
Maybe some people don't have a screen timeout and fall asleep sometimes dunno

I don't remember that. I know they had it on their Plasma TVs. I thought the Pixel phones with OLED screens also had it but don't know about Samsung phones. I do think that 99.9% of people that use a phone normally will never experience burn-in for the time they own the phone.

Use full immersive mode to hide the status bar and the top and bottom. Turn off auto brightness because if you leave it on and go in sun the brightness get high.
Screen time out to 15 seconds
Leave the brightness slider 50 percent or less
If you use aod make sure to flip the phone so it turns off when not using it
Use youtube in full screen if you use it a lot
These are my tips as I've had my screen changed 4 times due to burn in on my note 8.now using these methods my screen so far has no burn in
For me it's always was the top status bar that would burn in
But now I should never experience burn in ever again now I've actively tried to avoid it

Everyone I know that swears blind they don't have burn and have never had that issue on any device I immediately grab there phone and look closely on a complety grey background and 100 percent of them have status bar burn in at the top at the very least

No way am I turning stuff off to avoid something I've never seen
900 quid to have to suffer immersive mode utter lols, if I have to did that I'll sell it

I also honestly don't know what you're talking about. I've had s3, s5, s7, s9 and now to s10. Never had anything of the sort and since s7 I've been using AOD. Nothing happend. For the love of me I can't imagine how you may have had anything wrong with the display....

Exactly, it's always the status bar. I think there is no immersive mode on s10+ yet, but I removed all the icons.

Lol, sorry to see everyone busting you up on this....because you know, it's always more helpful to give someone a bad time to ensure a post count increment, than to be useful and offer up some insight.
Well, I have had screen burn in occur on 3 different galaxy phones. Not from falling asleep, not from being clueless...but from using my phone with games. 2 were mine and 1 on My wife's..hers occurred from youtube.
I used to play clash of clans tons, got burn in from the smaller stats numbers at the top- over time...But replaced the phone no sweat. Verizon insurance took the phone as a defect, noted as screen image ghosting, no charge. I just didn't realize that it was an issue playing, but it was over time. I think it was an s6. The reps in the store were as surprised as I was that it had occurred.
Different device & model, S7 , but same thing occurred, not in the same game either...This time with clash royale- the towers and little cloud icon burned in from too much playing and too often, apparently. I thought I had been a bit more careful, but i think it was the frequency in which I was playing versus overall time.
This time I simply contacted support in the chat about the ghosting, they replaced it again as a defect, no charge.
My wife's occurred on the s7, hers was the top bar because of YouTube, too much & too often. So, did the same for my wife's phone through Verizon insurance, they replaced as a screen ghosting defect.
After I noted what was going on, she made adjustments, didn't happen again to either of us.
Both of us are on the 10s now and very aware this can occur. So, you just need to make sure you're not on those static images or bars or icons for either long periods or frequent shorter periods...it takes time, but it happens, despite popular misconception.
It is only really noticable on a white background, like when looking at mostly blank new tab in chrome.
On the last device, the S7, I made sure to cut the amount of time spent on static images, especially the games. I still kept the brightness always max during the day, nights it was at the lowest setting.
And yes, I kept my settings the same after the replacement, just made adjustments to my gaming approach. I didn't want to baby the phone screen settings, shouldn't have to. No issues on that one after adjusting my approach.
So, it's certainly possible to avoid and I bet there's many out there that use certain apps for long periods and frequently just do not really notice it may have occurred, even if slightly.. and I'm taking heavy users.
A note app with a clean page or white blank background reveals it, most of the time you're not using that, so ignorance is bliss...and makes It's easier for folks to bust on someone else for asking about screen burn in because they themselves are simply clueless it even remotely occured with them.
Heavy user naysayers, check your old phones, just for the heck of it... and then keep the findings to yourself because no one actually cares about you being right or wrong.
Anyway, it was an inconvenient lesson at the time,for me but good to know and learn from. Didn't cost me much but time, as it just took up time set up the phones again.
I know Samsung isn't too concerned about it or they wouldn't have preinstalled games on the phone (ie. solataire).
Just do your best to adjust your screen settings, like those that mentioned, if you're into that. Or simply adjust your apps/usage habits.
Don't overlook the Digital Wellbeing settings on the S10...that may also help you target certain apps with a timer also. Might be something useful for you.

I used to play clash of clans tons, got burn in from the smaller stats numbers at the top- over time...But replaced the phone no sweat. Verizon insurance took the phone as a defect, noted as screen image ghosting, no charge. I just didn't realize that it was an issue playing, but it was over time. I think it was an s6. The reps in the store were as surprised as I was that it had occurred.
Different device & model, S7 , but same thing occurred, not in the same game either...This time with clash royale- the towers and little cloud icon burned in from too much playing and too often, apparently. I thought I had been a bit more careful, but i think it was the frequency in which I was playing versus overall time.
This time I simply contacted support in the chat about the ghosting, they replaced it again as a defect, no charge.
My wife's occurred on the s7, hers was the top bar because of YouTube, too much & too often. So, did the same for my wife's phone through Verizon insurance, they replaced as a screen ghosting defect.
After I noted what was going on, she made adjustments, didn't happen again to either of us.
Both of us are on the 10s now and very aware this can occur. So, you just need to make sure you're not on those static images or bars or icons for either long periods or frequent shorter periods...it takes time, but it happens, despite popular misconception.
It is only really noticable on a white background, like when looking at mostly blank new tab in chrome.
On the last device, the S7, I made sure to cut the amount of time spent on static images, especially the games. I still kept the brightness always max during the day, nights it was at the lowest setting.
And yes, I kept my settings the same after the replacement, just made adjustments to my gaming approach. I didn't want to baby the phone screen settings, shouldn't have to. No issues on that one after adjusting my approach.
So, it's certainly possible to avoid and I bet there's many out there that use certain apps for long periods and frequently just do not really notice it may have occurred, even if slightly.. and I'm taking heavy users.
A note app with a clean page or white blank background reveals it, most of the time you're not using that, so ignorance is bliss...and makes It's easier for folks to bust on someone else for asking about screen burn in because they themselves are simply clueless it even remotely occured with them.
Heavy user naysayers, check your old phones, just for the heck of it... and then keep the findings to yourself because no one actually cares about you being right or wrong.
Anyway, it was an inconvenient lesson at the time,for me but good to know and learn from. Didn't cost me much but time, as it just took up time set up the phones again.
I know Samsung isn't too concerned about it or they wouldn't have preinstalled games on the phone (ie. solataire).
Just do your best to adjust your screen settings, like those that mentioned, if you're into that. Or simply adjust your apps/usage habits.
Don't overlook the Digital Wellbeing settings on the S10...that may also help you target certain apps with a timer also. Might be something useful for you.

I'm also worry the AOD can cause burn in. I never used it before because I had a notification led...
I know it moves around, but is that enough? I also turn it off 8hs a day.

You can set the schedule for the time for the AOD is active and either use the AOD auto brightness option or set the brightness lower, if that helps you feel more confident with it. The movement should help avoid issues.
FWIW, I used AOD with my previous phone without any issue and I anticipate the same with this one.
My burn in issue was only with the games & YouTube as noted.

This is my main issue with AMOLED screens. They look nice but they wear out. The nature of Android means they will wear out unevenly which is why people see burn in. The wearing out of your screen is cumulative. Meaning that it isn't like an old CRT TV where it would take weeks of a static image to burn in but just showing the same image over time day in and day out. The only way to prevent it is to use the entire screen with moving images, like full screen movies, so that the panel wears evenly.
The status bar and navigation bar tend to be on the screen all the time those images will burn in first. Dark mode can also cause issues because if the area is dark it isn't being used and if it isn't being used it will look brighter than other areas that were used more frequently. The s10 has a full screen mode option for some apps. Some apps like Netflix will show the full screen movie even around the camera cutout and that is ideal. Youtube will also allow you to zoom in and show the video around the camera. cutout Chrome and the Samsung browser keep the status bar but it will change colors based on the site and if the bar is white it will invert the status icons which will help keep the panel wearing evenly. I have the dolphin browser which runs in full screen but the top portion of the panel is not used so that is less than ideal.
Auto brightness can be used but in the bright sun that panel is wearing much faster. The screen time out should be set to 15 seconds. These panels are designed to look great but not be super durable and in many cases that's what Samsung wants. They benefit when you have to buy a new device. It's sad to say but its business.

Question True AMOLED display ? Is my device defective ?

Hi. I don't have any way to show this but my unit has what I think is backlight bleed when displaying a fully black (#000000) picture.
This bleeding is somehow especially visible at 35% (don't ask me why) and 100% brightness.
Now, it's only really visible when in the dark and when my eyes are used to it so it's not a big deal for daily use. However, this screen is supposed to be AMOLED which presumably works on the same principle of OLED displays.
My OnePlus 3T, with the same picture of a plain black background and with the brightness turned to the max shows no sign of any light whatsoever, as any true OLED display should.
My Zenfone 8 however has a weird pattern of tiny scattered dots and a few vertical lines you can barely make out all around the display and especially along the left edge of the display.
Can anyone with a Zenfone 8 check if they observe the same effect ? Like I said, it's only visible when your eyes are well accustomed to obscurity. I tried repeating the experiment yesterday when going to sleep and didn't see anything at first but I woke up later that night and sure enough, the same pattern was visible again.
In case you're doubting the file I used to test it out, here it is. A fully black pic. Of course you have to watch it in fullscreen so that no UI element can pollute your vision.
Any insight on what might be happening would be greatly appreciated.

Used your file and checked it in a pitch black place. Can't see nothing on full brightness. I still had the home-recent apps slider on the bottom but covered it with my finger. I couldn't tell where the screen is at all.
Maybe yours has some defect but if you cannot see it without hours of eyes adjustment than I think you are exaggerating quite a bit.
I've been using the LG V30 which also has OLED but it had a grey lighting always. Don't know why. This screen is much much better.

It's not like I was purposely trying to find flaws in the display. I was looking for a wallpaper while in bed and as I was zooming in a picture, I noticed as if what I initially thought were color variations in the image remained static on the screen. It wasn't due to a dirty screen. In doubt, I tested with the black picture and cranked the brightness to emphasize the issue and it was clear something was up.
So even if this issue can't be seen during the day, it's still something that can be seen in normal use when using the phone in the dark.
I just went from the my PC to a dark room and tried to reproduce it with brightness at 35% and I could see it in a matter of seconds.
One of the key factors that made me buy this phone in the first place is the AMOLED display. If it's actually defective, I might as well get it replaced. I would just like to know if it's worth the hassle or if every unit has that defect maybe due to something in the manufacturing process.

Can't see anything like that on mine. Totally black everywhere. Try exchanging the phone. Or just give it back and get another so they will not try to repair it.

The only way the pixels can light is if they have current. Otherwise they are black as night.
Bad firmware or defective hardware.

Try clearing the system cache.

My display has that too, but only at 60 and 120 hz. At 90 Hz, the Dysplay is without lighting, so black as it should.

I don't have the option in the bootloader to reset the system cache, only "wipe data/factory reset".
I selected it thinking it would let me choose what to wipe but then it warned me about permanently deleting everything so I nope out of there.
Any other way I can do that ?

It's in Settings somewhere under storage or memory.
On Samsung's it's on the boot menu.

That's it! I got the same behavior. Perfect black at 90hz, grey goo at 60 and 120. Since I'm not the only one, I suppose this is "normal". I guess that must be some sort of compromise they had to make for the display and they hoped people wouldn't notice.
It's a shame but at least I'm relieved knowing the screen works well at 90Hz. Since the 120Hz was not one of the key features I was looking for, this doesn't feel too bad a compromise to deal with.

Same.. When viewing black wallpaper @60/120 hz, it got scattered gray all over the place with a vertical line in the middle. Noticeable if you're in a dark room. Glad i'm not the only one

Alright, so I was able to capture a long exposure photo of the phone on a black screen. The issue appears on 60 and 120Hz like mentionned above. I found that it is more apparent on the 120Hz mode than 60Hz. 90Hz is flawless. The effect is kind of exagerrated, but it was the only way to visibly capture it.

Also during restart, the "Zenfone" loading screen appears like that in dark room.

Same behavior here, 120 and 60Hz are not truly black. 90Hz is.

Quick reply to add here that for those that use the phone at 60Hz, you can enable DC Dimming, that solved the issue for my device. 120Hz still needs to be figured out though...

DC dimming can reportedly have its own drawbacks as well like skewing color rendering.
