[Q] WCDMA - No or intermittent service - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently upgraded to Gingerbread with Continuum 5.5.1 and love the ROM. But I'm having trouble staying connected to AT&T.
If I set the phone to GSM only it seems to stay connected. However, if I try to set it to GSM/WCDMA or WCDMA only, I get intermittent service or none at all.
I've searched and seen a few mentions of related issues but no definitive answers. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas on how to resolve?

Try different modems

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I Reset the wcdma band using Samservmode and that has helped. Still jumps on and off a lot though.

Switched to UGL2 modem and it helped significantly. Thanks!

No 3G since FRF83

Any solution?
Only GPRS/EDGE does work, if 3G is available, it disconnects automatically until 3G isn't available.
Solution: Set to 2G-Only :-(
Anyone has the same problem?
I didn't have this problem with FRF 72.

Have you tried going into your phone settings from *#*#4636#*#* and setting it to wcdma only? I did that on mine not too long ago and no more dropping to edge for me!

does it lose complete signal? or does it show 3g still but just not doing anything?
Mine was working at first after flash. Then at about 2am it just kept trying to load then times out. Still shows 3g but just dont do anything. Im hoping its just tmobile messing with their towers... I dont see why it would work at first then not now..
The problem is, that i can only have a internet connection, when the phone is logged in into a gsm or edge network.
as soon as wcdma is available, the phone disconnects from the internet.
the signal is always available, but it looses the internet connection when it changes to 3G mode.
when the phone changes from 2G->3G mode, i see for 1s the 3G icon and then no icon will bi there.
when it changes back from 3G->2G, the EDGE/GPRS icon is visible again.

ok thanks for clarification. My problem is different. I think related to phone company.. I still show the 3g signal and even have bars, but the pages dont load and eventually gives me the check your service and try again alert....
So Im hoping soon its working again for me... And I hope you as well figure it out.....
Thank you Good luck!
Had the same issue after update, did *#*#4636#*#* and noticed I was set to GSM only. Set it to WCDMA preferred and now it's good.
Thank you very much, thats the solution!!

Thank you. Updated to FRF83 this morning and I've had a full 3g signal, just couldn't pull data all day. Could over edge. Sure enough, GSM only was selected.
AT&T N1.
I'm having the same issue on a non-rooted phone on T-Mobile. No 3G after the FRF83 update. Full bars of service and 3G displayed in the status bar. Dropping to Edge only works but there is no data with 3G.

Same issue here.
Switching to WCDMA preferred doesn't work for me though.....any help is welcome
I think it's a hardware problem with a lot of N1's.
Mine was ok the first 2 months, and later, 3g not working. This is driving me crazy ):
I have tried everything. Change the simcard, I did a reset of the data with my telcon, and nothing happens.
I've seen these problems on many N1's.
I hope google / htc release a fix for this problem.

how bout checking your bands in the service menu. so *#*#4636#*#* -> phone info -> press the menu key for more options -> select bands -> choose one appropriate for your region (ie "USA BANDS").
If all else fails do a factory reset by going to the settings -> privacy -> restore factory defaults.. of course do a backup/sync/whatever before just to make sure you can get all your apps back.
There's other ways to do a factory reset via the bootloader .. its under recovery and you press up volume or the trackball I think and you can just select all the clear/erase settings there and that should clear out everything on the phone's internal storage.
The factory reset worked for me (via bootloader) when I upped from update-1 to FRF50 and didn't have any data icon next to my signal strength. Could call out but couldn't get data.
Hope that helps.

Check your APN settings. Do a full factory reset from the bootloader. If nothing works you should call tech support again. Most 3g issues where you have issues with connecting are service/signal level related. I *****ed early about my 3g issues on tmobile and it was the network as they've pretty much gone away with improving the backhaul in my area for HSDPA+ or updates to the phone's radio.
HTC is really really really cool about swapping phones and repairing them. If you feel you have a nexus that has hardware issues call them. I did this 3 times already (one time for minor cosmetic issues with the refurb they sent) and I couldn't be happier about how willing they were to replace/repair the phone. It turns out I really didn't have any issues with them at all.. with any issues with hardware from the second refurbished phone. It was service or software related and I'm happy to say with updates/tmobile service improvements I couldn't be happier with this phone.

Thanks blisk, but the thing I don't understand is why Blackberry 9700 with T-Mobile bands, doesn't have problems at all ?
By the way, I rooted my phone , so the thing with the warranty it's complicated
I had it happen last night at work all night, but when i got home i checked my wife's tp2 and it also was doing the same thing so for levity wasn't the phone but tmobile. They started worming the same time also.... I think its tmobile.
Hello, I had the same problem with my imported n1. I'm using the tmobile version non rooted fully stock manually updated to frf83. I did a *#*#4636#*#* and selected wcdma only, rebooted and couldn't connect to my gsm network. Went in again and did a wcdma preferred, rebooted, and I works better, still changes fast to edge and G, but less often, I'm still trying it but I have high hopes its gonna be ok
Mmmm i did have problems with 3G too after pushing FRF83, but i found out that for some reason the APN settings weren't set correctly after the update. In my case the port setting after the proxy of the APN wasn't set, i changed to the correct value and it worked.
In conclusion, check your APN settings.
Just went from FRF72 to FRF83 and it's working fine.
I'm currently set to GSM auto (PRL) in the *#*#4636#*#* and I didn't change it to that after putting on FRF83.

In need of instruction...

To give a back story on what I'm trying to accomplish, I'll explain my situation.
I work for Bell, in a retail store, the main reason I came to these forums was to find a way to re-flash phones in store to avoid having to doa what little stock we have of the phones. One of my colleagues from another location told me about the new update from Kies locking phones up at a ridiculous rate of 25%, so I'm trying to be pro-active about it.
Once I got in, I got a bit carried away with 2.2 software and what not. Now, i'm no expert, but I'm computer literate and made sense of most of the process, some extra guidance would be nice though.
Playing with the phones we have in store, I was able to flash every available software I could find on said phones, however a constant issue is found. I can not get a solid data connection. If I disable data, everything works fine, soon as I turn it back on, nothing happens.
Furthermore, I followed a thread regarding re-flashing everything back to Bell's stock settings and it didn't help me along at all.
I have done some searches, but i'm coming up dry. I know you've probably heard this hundreds of times and I'm sorry for being new to the process, some guidance towards this all would be great.

Can you elaborate more on this?
what do you mean by unable to get a solid data connection?
what kind of data connection are you referring to?
USB cable between phone to PC?
or Wifi data
or APN (3G) data?

not sure where you got that number from, but it's not that accurate
the reason for the ridiculous high amount of returned phones is due the Internal SD card problem that was found.
even under normal conditions if it gets formatted a lot or used a lot it seems to die faster than its Europe counterpart.
apparently on the Canadian version of the I9000 they use a bad batch of Flash Disk for the storage memory
there is a sticky Topic Poll about it.
it is NOT the ROM flash from Kies that are killing the units, just anything software that constantly access the internal SD can produce the same effect.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=793404
the rest of the returns you guys at Bell are seeing are due this other problem discussed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775017
it can be reproduced, but you need the ideal conditions to do it.
it has to do with signal quality and tower availability

I'm referring to 3G connection. I have set up the APN, even tried different settings, all producing the same results.
In regards to your second reply, the phones I've seen at this location for DOA's have mostly because of a failure to fully turn on, the display won't show. I've experienced similar issues when a flash doesn't work properly, a re-flash fixes it. We started seeing this issue after samsung released the update. However, I'm not going to flash a customers phone to have them lose 3G connectivity, or open up other issues.
Basically, I'm looking for two things. Primarily a way to re-flash everything to work as if it were out of box, with the latest software update. Secondly, to be able to get a stable 3G connection on 2.2, everything else seems to work fine at this point.
i'm not even going to touch the 2.2 topic as it's not even released officially.
the current stable official flash is JH2, on JH2 3G should work properly (stable), another thing you can do is to go into the service menu using the secret codes (wiki) and make sure the proper 3G bands are selected for WCDMA
1900 and 850 should both have a start next to it
next check is the *#0011* to see if the towers keeps constantly changing
that's another reason for unstable 3G if the phone keeps jumping towers every few seconds
this is also related to the 2nd link i mentioned about people getting Comatose Syndrome on the phones, which locks up the phone, and they have to reset the phone to get the phone to work again.
I'm running JH2 currently, I ran *#2263# 850 and 1900 are available. Also, ran *#0011# both are available, ran a test on youtube it worked for 5 minutes.
Any ideas?
**Edit**
I lied, on the *#0011# it only shows 1900.

Get something straight
the update samsung released was JH2, and it is not causing the problems you've seen.
the problems with the symptoms described are after they were flashed by the Alpha & Beta versions of Froyos 2.2, which many of them do end up losing the 850 band, the band issue can be fixed with much work.
there have been at least 4 different leaks of froyo, each one bringing its own volume of chaos and bugs, the most dangerous 2 are JPH and JPK, one loses the IMEI / ESN number ID, the other one kills the internal SD

Since the I9000M and I9000 are hardware based bands, you should always have the 850 and 1900 bands for 3G
Many who have tried Froyo and back had come across the problem of losing the 850 band, mainly because the Froyo leaks were intended for the Korea test team running international I9000 devices
some times just by flashing the Firmware back to stock or Froyo betas doesn't actually activates the 850 band, even though it shows as selected in the Service Menue
if you go back to the Band Selection screen of the Service Menue, you should choose bands that are knowingly not available in canada, like say band 900 for example, and then go back again to the service menu, and band selection to only choose 850
once you can confirm 850 works, then you can select 1900 as well, and now both of the bands should be active permanently until some body else screws it up again.
using *#0011# and trying to call the voice mail are the fastest way to verify for line and for 3G on 850
you can also try the app speedtest from speedtest.net

[Q] Network selection issues, not wifi related

Anyone on froyo have this problem?
This includes anyone using custom rom
The only way I can get it to switch back to 3G is if I use samserv debug to change my band to WCDMA only.
if i do the following I get this problem:
1) From WCDMA/GSM (auto) or WCDMA only -> Change to GSM only
2) I get GPRS signal -> then i get emergency call only due to bad 2g reception in my area
3) Change GSM only to either WCDMA only or Auto - it does not change back to 3G and stays as is in GPRS mode, and I lose connection. Won't turn back on to 3G again.
Never happened in 2.1. Only in 2.2.
The problem with staying on 1 band is:
My home has bad GSM signal, but 3G does not have a very wide coverage in my region. So in some areas, if there is no 3G signal I lose connection totally and people cannot get me. When I am at home I cannot be on GSM because I get no connection. Whereas 3G signal is not too bad where I live.
Anyone have any ideas how to solve this? Or is this a hardware issue? I'm not entirely sure if its hardware related because I can get the bands if I force it to via debug. But it won't auto switch nor will it switch inside the regular settings menu.
On all 2.1 versions I never had this issue.
On 2.2 stock DXJPA i started having this problem.
Now on darky 8.0 and this problem is still here.
HELP!

[Q]Odd signal issue

Ok, so I know it's not the csc, or the rom, or the apn settings, or the modem, or the band selection. It's not an app, or even a signal issue. It's not the service or network selection. Wiping didn't help nor did a factory reset. Every time my phone connects to an edge network, it won't connect to an hsdpa network without me going into settings, wireless and network, mobile networks, wcdma only and then back to gsm and wcdma. Any suggestions?
Anyone that comes up with a half-way decent suggestion gets a Thank You....
I'm guessing that no one has come across this before? It's not like it won't connect to HSDPA, it's just that it won't connect automatically. Believe me when I say, I've searched samsunggalaxysforum, google, and xda for a solution so I don't think this is a problem that has been posted here as of yet. Forgive me if it is and lead me to it....
Bump.
I don't think enough people have seen it before it slips into the nether regions of the forum.
I changed HSDPA revision to option 2 in band selection (HSDPA/no HSUPA). It worked off of airplane mode, which it hadn't done before but the same issue persists. When I get to work (where there is a clear HSDPA signal) from home (also clear HSDPA) it's on EDGE. During travel or when the HSDPA signal is not available, it'll just stay on that **** EDGE network even when I get to an HSDPA area.
Same problem on a clean stock rom ???
jje
Come to think of it, I'm not sure. HSDPA is new where I live but not where I work. I did, however, do a repartition in Odin of the JS3 firmware and then a wipe with Darky's 9.2 and 9.3. Of course I didn't really stick with JS3 for very long before flashing to Darky's ROM but this isn't a problem inherent in the ROM itself or others would have reported it. Furthermore, I've switched between kernels, file systems and modems and yet the problem persists. I haven't enabled any tweaks with any kernel I've used either so that shouldn't be an issue, should it?
Maybe try this.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* ->
Go to Phone Information -> and perhaps play with the Preferred network type?
If noen of your efforts have resulted in anything meaningful, the suspicion goes to your operator.
Hope this helps.
i have the exact same issue although 3G is available in my area when it once logs into edge mode it doesnt wanna change it. only when i restart the phone it logs onto 3G again.
pretty annoying
maik
You can go into wireless and settings, network settings, wcdma only, and then back to wcdma and gsm and it'll connect to 3g or H. At least that way you don't have to restart the phone every time it does it. The main thing is finding out what can fix the issue.
For some reason, the phone information settings don't stick. I've tried to use wcdma preferred but it just goes right back. The other code settings, on the other hand, work just fine.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I'm wondering if it may be a sim card problem rather then a phone problem. I'm thinking I should try my girlfriend's sim. I'll report back when I see if that's the problem. It'll be after work though so feel free to come up with other suggestions. I plan to do a write up in general, [resolved] if we figure out the problem so people with this issue can know what to do.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Not the sim. I also contacted my service provider to get a push of their latest update with tower location, it's not prl on gsm it's id-something-something. No change there really as far as the signal issue goes. I also checked my provider website just to see how much data I had used, not even close to the cap on unlimited.
I think i'll have to try a flash on odin with repartition to a stock firmware and then work my way back to see what may have caused the problem. It's a shame, really since everything else on the phone works phenomenally, it just won't auto connect to hsdpa which is spotty in my home and work area so it's a bigger pain in the neck then it needs to be if it won't switch between the two on it's own.

No LTE, Jumping from 3G to 4G

This randomly just happened 2 days ago. I had LTE ever since, till then. My phone keeps jumping from 4G to 3G, hardly seeing LTE. I wasn't sure if it was a ROM/modem thing, so I tried updating my modem to DOJ7, and changing ROMs, yet the problem still persist. APNs look normal, and I tried reconnecting my phone with T-Mobile's network via their T Force service, but still not solving the problem.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
